Episode 13: Water is Life (Samaqan nit Pomawsuwakon)The Aunties welcome two honored Passamaquoddy guests to the studio, Chief Pos Bassett and Attorney Corey Hinton. This is the first time a Wabanaki Chief has been in the studio and the Aunties are honored. Both Corey and Chief Bassett will discuss the history of the Sipayik Passamaquoddy water crisis, where have we been and where are we now. Maine, “the way life should be” is often how you see this state described. Maine has a brand, it is a brand that includes vast forests, beautiful coastlines, robust rivers, and clean air. While Wabanaki Territory (what some now call Maine) is a sacred home to Wabanaki people and has been for thousands of years, we know the risks deep within the land and created by the people. Passamaquoddy people have lived with dirty water for generations, poisonous water entering the community and homes of the people. Throughout the state of Maine, when water is unsafe, the response is fierce, and the problem is mitigated. For the Passamaquoddy people, the story has been different. Why? Tata, 86, breathed his last on Wednesday night at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. Among those who paid respects to the business tycoon are Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, and industrialist Mukesh Ambani. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has proposed that a Bharat Ratna be awarded to Tata, posthumously.Setting the stage for a new tussle between the Aam Aadmi Party and the L-G office, the CMO on Wednesday claimed that Chief Minister Atishi was “forcibly vacated” from the residence at Civil Lines, which was previously occupied by Arvind Kejriwal. “Delhi CMs residence was forcibly vacated at the behest of the BJP as Lt Governor V K Saxena wants to allot it to a saffron party leader,” the CMO said. This comes two day after Atishi was asked to vacate the bungalow by officials from the Public Works Department (PWD)- a department under her own charge. The Aam Aadmi Party claims that Atishi followed all formalities before moving in, but the PWD says that an official “handover” of the property from Kejriwal to the department is yet to take place. The house has now been sealed.Maldives President Muhammad Muizzu reached New Delhi Sunday on his first bilateral State visit and was received at the airport by Minister of State (External Affairs) Kirti Vardhan Singh. The 30-minute call was the first known chat for Biden and Netanyahu since August and coincides with a sharp escalation of Israel's conflict with Iran and the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah, but with no sign of an imminent ceasefire to end the conflict with Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza. The call was "direct and very productive," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters, while acknowledging the two leaders have disagreements and are open about them. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.
This is the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 9th of October and here are the headlines.A day after Congress leaders rejected the Haryana Assembly poll results, the Election Commission today wrote to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge saying the statements were “far from a legitimate part of free speech” and a step towards “undemocratic rejection of the will of the people”. As the results emerged on Tuesday, giving the BJP a clear victory, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh raised questions over the counting process. Addressing a press conference, he said that polling booths with electronic voting machines that had 99 per cent battery charge saw BJP wins while those with 60-70 per cent charge had Congress victories. The body of the Territorial Army personnel, who was abducted by militants a day ago from the Kokernag forests in South Kashmir, has been recovered by the Army during a search operation this morning. According to the sources in the security establishment, the personnel abducted by the militants was a 26-year-old resident of South Kashmir's Anantnag district. The Army's Chinar Corps, earlier in the day, had said via a post on X: “Based on intelligence input, a joint counter operation was launched by Indian army along with Jammu and Kashmir Police and other agencies in Kazwan forest on 8th October. Operation continued overnight as one soldier of the Territorial Army was reported missing. Massive search operation is in progress.”Calling the proposed auction of the skull of a Naga person in the United Kingdom “dehumanising” and “continued colonial violence”, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking his intervention in the matter. A ‘19th century horned Naga skull' had been listed as one of the items on sale by prominent auction house The Swan at Tetsworth for an auction set to take place on October 9. The house has been sealed, PWD officials said. Former CM, Arvind Kejriwal was staying in the house till last week and vacated it around three weeks after he resigned from his post. Atishi, according to PWD officials, was in the possession of the keys but was not given an official allotment letter for the premises.US President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, with discussions focused on Israel's potential response to a recent missile attack from Iran. This anticipated call marks the first known direct communication between the leaders since August, amidst escalating conflicts in the Middle East. Tensions have surged following a missile strike carried out by Iran last week, which Tehran claimed was retaliation for Israel's military actions in Lebanon. While the attack did not result in any casualties in Israel and was deemed ineffective by US officials, it has intensified fears of further escalation in the region. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Wish you all a Happy Navratri festival. Many people with diabetes wishes to practice fasting during these 9 days of Navratri. So, during fasting they should practice smart fasting, keep yourself hydrated, include healthy fat like nuts, seeds, avocados in your diet. Eat at small intervals. Avoid high fat & tried foods. Check your blood sugars regularly. Always consult the physician before fasting. (Narrated by Dr. Kavita Gupta) Dr. Sunil Gupta expressed his view on lipids. Lipid abnormalities are observed in 70-80% of PWD. This include high triglycerides increase in smaller & denser low density liproproteins (LDL) particles & decreased levels of high density liproproteins (HDL). Every person with diabetes should check their lipid profile annually. In case of abnormalities, they need to re-check lipid levels, 6-8 weeks after initiating lipid lowering therapy. PWD have 2-3 times increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) versus their non-diabetic counterpart's, and dyslipidemia is one of the strong contributing risk factor for CVD. Insulin is a hormone secreted by Beta – Cells of pancreas. People with Type 1 DM require insulin throughout their life to manage their blood sugar as their body produces no insulin or very little insulin. In T2DM, insulin is required when people with diabetes (PWD) on oral drugs, fail to adequately control blood glucose or when they present with severe symptomatic hyperglycaemia (where FBG > 250mg & or PPBG > 350mg/dl or GHb- >9-10 % along with symptoms) to reduce beta cell exhaustion & glucose toxicity. It can be given in combination with metformin. It is a temporary condition & insulin can be stopped, once noromoglycemia is achieved in case of Type 2 DM. Insulin remains the drug of choice during major surgery or in presence of any infection or during any acute illness. 20-30% of T2DM may required insulin within 3 years of diagnosis of diabetes, as they fail to respond to oral drugs, and almost 90% will fail to respond to the maximum dose of oral glucose therapy in 14-16 years duration of diabetes. Importantly, most of the people will need insulin sooner or later in the natural course of T2DM. Insulin therapy can be used alone or in combination with oral drugs to maintain normoglycaemia. Insulin is the best drug of choice in diabetes management. (Recorded 22nd Sept 2023)

Educators can burst the myths & misconceptions from the mind of a lay person, which prevails due to unawareness and sharing of non-scientific evidence based data in various social media platforms. Nurses can save PWD's from unnecessary sufferings & can help for their psycho- social wellbeing. (Recorded June 9, 2023)

One of the most annoying thing about testing blood sugar is how much the lancets hurt... and how often we DON'T change the lancets even though we're supposed to.I readily admit that yes, finger pricks hurt, and also yes, I am usually too lazy to change the lancet. But apparently there are such things as PAINLESS lancets, made by Pip Diabetes Care.Josh Pittman, CEO of Pip Diabetes Care, joins us to talk about painless lancets and other ways his diabetes product company strives to make life easier for PWD from all backgrounds. What to do next... A very common issue for higher-weight people who are trying to access healthcare is healthcare providers (HCPs) who want to focus on weight and weight loss. Today I'll give some tips that I've learned both from personal experience and as a patient advocate for navigating what I call Provider Weight Distraction. In this episode we look at options to get weight-neutral healthcare, even from HCPs dealing with PWD. Get full access to Weight and Healthcare at weightandhealthcare.substack.com/subscribe
Fasting may have some general health benefits. It helps in weight loss, lowers bad cholesterol (Triglycerides, LDL-Cholesterol) and increases good cholesterol (HDL-C) and helps improve your blood sugar level. People with diabetes (PWD) should practice smart fasting .During Ramadan, PWD should have protein rich, high fiber meals at Sehari and should avoid high fat, high carb meals at Iftar. Instead of sharbat and juices opt for buttermilk, soups, lime water, jaljeera to keep yourself hydrated. During Navratri, try to eat at regular intervals and instead of fried food & sweets choose low fat foods, bhagar , kuttu ka aata, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and oilseeds. Avoid Vigorous exercises during fasting but be physically active. Monitor blood glucose frequently while fasting and also watch for low blood sugar. Recorded on 24th March 2023 at Akashwani Nagpur.

The pious month of Ramadan and Navratri has commenced and many people would observe fasting with food, without food and water (for limited hours). Approximately 80% of diabetics can observe safe fasting. International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has made global guidelines on Ramadan fasting for People with Diabetes (PWD), which should be followed during fasting. According to these guidelines, most of PWD can do fasting with precautions. Those who have Brittle Diabetes with lot of fluctuations of blood glucose should avoid fasting. PWD on many oral drugs or multiple doses of insulin should avoid fasting to prevent hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia or ketosis. Many T1 Diabetics (T1DM) are on Insulin Pump, where insulin doses can be adjusted as per the carbs in their meal, lifestyle and blood glucose. They must consult their treating Doctor before commencing any type of fast. Similarly, T2DM those who are on single or multiple drug combinations or on diet control should also consult their doctor before fasting. Few medicines like Biguanides (Metformin), Gliptins etc. are safer during fasting and have low risk of hypoglycemia. Those who are on insulin, the dose may need to be reduced to prevent hypoglycemia. PWD with associated complications like heart disease, brain stroke, kidney failure, retinopathy, Cancer etc. and those with history of any recent major surgery should avoid fasting. It is advisable to take a fitness certificate for fasting from your Doctor and practice smart fasting. While fasting, mild exercises like daily household work, walking, yoga & Pranayam can be incorporated, however we should avoid vigorous exercises. Women with diabetes in pregnancy should avoid fasting for a healthy fetal growth. Awareness about fasting should be created amongst the health care professionals, para medical staff and diabetes educators, so that they can counsel their PWD for safe fasting.

AKC's New Genetic Testing Program to Offer Expanded Insights [caption id="attachment_11992" align="alignleft" width="358"] Dr. Claire Wiley, VMD and her Portugese Water Dog.[/caption] Dr. Claire Wiley, Executive Director of the AKC DNA Program, joins host Laura Reeves with breaking news about the expansion of their testing capabilities. AKC's DNA program will soon include the option to identify traits and genetic diseases, in addition to simple parentage, Wiley announced. “For the past 25 years, the AKC DNA program has really focused on protecting the registry,” Wiley noted. “And they did that using unique identification, kind of like fingerprints and also using those fingerprints to verify parentage. It had more of a regulatory role to it. “A couple years ago, the AKC developed an ad hoc genetics committee. They listened to the breeders (who) were really interested in having more from the DNA program. And that's kind of why I got hired, because we've listened to the feedback and are trying to bring things into the future to really serve our most important constituents, the breeder.” Wiley, a second-generation Portugese Water Dog breeder, is a board certified veterinary specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Her passion for genetic health testing started early in life after losing two PWD puppies to juvenile dilated cardiomyopathy. She later worked on the breakthrough studies to identify the genetic marker for protein losing nephropathy in Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. “I'm a breeder. I lived through it from the very beginning and now I'm back here to help bring the DNA program into the future,” Wiley said. “At AKC, we try to focus on all dog owners, but it all starts with the breeders who are producing the healthy dogs for all dog owners. “The fundamental process will essentially be the same where you use a cheek swab to collect DNA and you go online to activate it. When you first go in to buy the swabs, there will be two products. The original parentage product will be called the AKC Original DNA profile and then the one that includes health tests and traits will be called the AKC Signature DNA profile. “So when you're actually on what we call our shop page where you're buying the swabs, you have an option of choosing either just the Original profile, which is the $50 kit that provides parentage, or you can choose the option that still includes that $50 original profile, but also has health and traits available. “We're really hoping to launch this by mid 2023 at the latest, hopefully April. A lot of these companies say there are over 200 markers that they're testing for, but if you actually talk to breeders, they're probably focused on 2, 3, maybe 0 for that specific breed. So, we are taking the experts, you know, the Breeders, and having them tell us what we should be including as important markers for them. “The parent clubs have what we call parent club health statement letters where they actually say this is what we are concerned about as a breed and as a group, and so we're using those letters to determine which testing is the most important for that breed.” Listen to the full episode for more from Dr. Wiley.

In this episode we discuss Disability in the Greco-Roman World and the New Testament with Dr. Louise Gosbell, who is Principal of Mary Andrews College in Sydney, Australia, and the author of The Poor, The Crippled, The Blind, and the Lame: Physical and Sensory Disability in the Gospels of the New Testament (published by Mohr Siebeck). At the outset of our conversation, Dr. Gosbell shares her personal story struggling with chronic health issues that have developed into a disability, as well as the way that disability has affected her wider family. Over the course of our conversation, we discuss the Great Banquet of Luke 14, the woman with the issue of blood, and the man born blind in John 9. As Dr. Gosbell emphasizes with us, disability is not a static experience, either in the ancient world or the modern one, and is an inevitable reality rather than a rare experience. Thus, our accommodation and our framework towards disability needs to shift so that we are much more intentional around disability in our churches, including in our teachings and in our practices. Team Members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. Grace Emmett, Stephanie Kate Judd, and Rev. Dr. Chris Porter. Series Disclaimer: We know that this space is fraught, and we don't speak for every PWD. We may inevitably get some things wrong in this series, but we ask for your patience in advance since we think it's more important to have the conversation than shy away from it out of fear of saying the wrong thing. At the same time, this is a learning process for all of us, and we want to maintain a posture of learning throughout the series and beyond. Thanks for listening!
In the second episode of our series on disability, we discuss blindness in the Hebrew Bible with Dr. Eric Harvey, who holds a PhD from Brandeis University in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, with a specialization in Bible and the Ancient Near East. Dr. Harvey also recently held a digital humanities post-doctoral fellowship at the center for spatial and textual analysis at Stanford University, and he blogs at blindscholar.com. Throughout our conversation, Dr. Harvey shares his personal story of becoming legally blind during his doctoral studies, and how his experience led him to reassess the construct of blindness in the Hebrew Bible. In particular, he addresses the passages that use the saying “having eyes, but not seeing” in the Psalms, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Isaiah, highlighting how the line itself does not pertain to the same reality (sometimes it relates to moral disobedience and idols, and only once does it actually refer to literal blindness). As we continue on, Dr. Harvey explains how he takes a historicist view of disability in biblical texts, as opposed to a redemptionist or a rejectionist approach (drawing upon the taxonomy of the late Prof. Hector Avalos). Dr. Harvey emphasizes how the biblical fascination with healing, and the contemporary hope in it, leaves people with the trauma of not experiencing such healing and also without much reflection on what faithful living looks like with the bodies that one has. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Stephanie Kate Judd and Dr. Madison Pierce. Series Disclaimer: We know that this space is fraught, and we don't speak for every PWD. PWD - people with disabilities DWP - Disability Without Poverty December 3rd of this year marks 30 years since the United Nations adopted this date as the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). The theme for IDPD 2022 is “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world“. What is Disability Without Poverty (DWP)? What is Bill C-22 (the Canada Disability Benefit)? This week on Outlook we speak with Janet Rodriguez – Disability advocate; Ontario coordinator for DWP about Janet's international perspective (speaking of coming from Peru to Canada) and then what it's been like living here in this country with the push for Bill C-22 as 2022 comes to a close. Janet tells us about this organization and this bill as the three of us have an open discussion about our own, individual experiences with disability and the connection between disability and poverty in Canada specifically, both before and since Covid-19 came along, contributing to so many societal cracks, all of which were already forming before the pandemic but of which have only widened more vastly since. When Covid hit, the government snapped into high gear for Canadians when they were unable to go to work. The Canadian government created the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit or CERB, but with cost-of-living on the increase, those living with disabilities (both visible and invisible) have fallen further and further below the poverty line. This ends up harming society more, in the long run, but with disability there's always been stigma and feelings of being a burden, on the system, in the capitalistic culture we're all living in. We wanted to speak with someone who is doing something, as part of a group of Canadians living with disability, to engage with policy makers and fellow stakeholders to make life better for pwd, a group any one of us could join at any time. “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world“. This may be a global truth, but it must begin and end in the country in which we live, and Janet Rodriguez is our guest for this broad strokes discussion broken down. Those of us with disabilities in Canada (PWD/DWP), we must have a highly visible seat at the table for all consultations on the creation of a Canadian Disability Benefit and that's just what Disability Without Poverty and Rodriguez are doing by pulling up a chair for human rights here at home. And as we wrap up 2022, on this first Outlook of December, we promote Disability Without Poverty's webinar taking place Thursday, December 8th beginning at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET. It's a year-End review of the Canada Disability Benefit. Together with hosts Michelle Hewitt, national co-chair) and Rabia Khedr, national director, DWP will be discussing "how far we've come and the challenges that lie ahead in making Bill C-22 a reality.” Register here: https://plan-9.hubspotpagebuilder.com/reg-dwp-year-end-townhall You can also register by phone at: 1-877-775-6652 Read more about what Disability Without Poverty are all about by visiting their website where you can sign up for the DWP newsletter for updates in your inbox: https://www.disabilitywithoutpoverty.ca And find them on Facebook: http://facebook.com/disabilitywithoutpoverty

This week we discuss an important study that needs you. If you or someone you know wishes to participate, please reach out to Dr. Turner and his team at: 202 994-1728 or rwturnerlab@gwu.edu.com. You can also visit rwturnerlab.com to learn more and sign up for the screening process. More information about Dr. Turner: Robert W. Turner II, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Neurology, at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is a biobehavioral health disparities researcher with ethnographic and mixed methods training. Dr. Turner is the Principal Investigator (PI) for a National Institute on Aging (NIA) Health Disparities award which conducts multi-method research to assess caregiver burden. The research explores whether the stress of being the primary caregiver of a person with dementia (PWD) produces cognitive dysfunction in adult and older adult Black American men. His NIA funded K01 award examines the interrelationship between multiple measures of psychosocial and neurocognitive risk and protective factors associated with accelerated cognitive aging & mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) among former collegiate and professional football players. This line of research encompasses understanding how traumatic injury, as an occupational hazard, hinders daily living and career planning over the life course. These are many of the same concerns faced by military personnel returning from war. He is also the author of “Not For Long: The Life and Career of the NFL Athlete” (Oxford Press) and a contributor on the LeBron James HBO documentary “Student-Athlete.” His experience as a former professional NFL player (San Franchise 49ers) and a researcher provides an insightful perspective on the various factors contributing to Black male health disparities.
