The Haverhill Fire Department hockey team is preparing for this Saturday's charity game in support of veterans.Haverhill Deputy Fire Chief Gregory R. Roberts, a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, says the contest supports the Skate for 22 Foundation, which was founded to help veterans adjust to civilian life after getting out of the service“As you know, about 22 veterans take their lives per day. So, they started an organization back in 2017 to try to bring a lot of the veteran community together into that locker room facility where they had the teamwork and comradery they had while they were serving our country, and try to get everybody to talk,” he explains.Roberts says the hockey rink, game, and locker room itself prove to be a very helpful setting.“We're a different generation of veterans where we don't typically go to the VFW or the AmVets. We don't gather like that. So, this was a way to bring everybody together, have everybody vent and have their time together and that comradery that we are so used to.”Roberts spent 12 years in the Army before becoming a member of the Haverhill Fire Department. He says he has a lot of friends afflicted with post-traumatic stress and issues of that nature. He also mentions he didn't play hockey as a youth or in High School.“I picked it up with I was in my mid-40s, believe it or not. That organization, Skate for 22, I had heard about and I went out there and just started playing for them. We've been playing with them since 2017 and it's been going strong since then. The Haverhill Fire Department one is fairly new. It's probably about two or three years old.”And concerning the Haverhill Fire Department hockey team, Roberts says they have been organized to help.“What the Haverhill Fire Department club, as a charity, is we raise money and all that money we keep in Haverhill. We give, whether it's for the high school sports teams or some of the youth sports programs, to help offset some of the costs.”The game between the Haverhill Fire Department hockey team and the Skate For 22 Foundation is Saturday, Nov. 30, at 4 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Rink behind Haverhill High School, 137 Monument St. Donations of any amount are requested and a 50/50 raffle will also be conducted. "4:09 to 9:02" Boston To Oklahoma and New York CitiesBeyond the Bombingsby David HamelA newlywed couple were in the midst of unsuccessful fertility treatments at a nearby center during the time of the Oklahoma City bombing which occurred at 9:02 am on April 19, 1995. The personal heartbreak and simultaneous loss of 15 children at the day care center in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and its aftermath set a sorrowful resonating tone of great sadness, acceptance, and getting on with life for the veteran marathon runner and his wife. But the impact of the second aircraft at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 at 9:02:59 am assured that would not be so. That is, until the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013. The clock at the finish line during the first explosion reminded him of his first marathon time of 4:09 in 1990. That "Hey You" moment coupled with the death of an eight-year-old boy near the finish line and a very close date of the Oklahoma City bombing reignited long dormant reactions and emotions of 1995 and earlier life events. Thus began a passionate journey to reclaim the Boston and Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon finish lines in 2014 and 2016. This is the story of an Air Force Sergeant and his wife, of teddy bears and babies that weren't to be & ... and of letting go.David Hamel is a retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant serving over 30 years on active duty in aircraft maintenance and as Director of the Air Force Enlisted Heritage Research Institute in Montgomery, Alabama. He is a past Alabama State Commander of the Korea Defense Veterans of America and past Eastern District Commander of AMVETS, North Carolina. He has performed 175 Prisoner of War-Missing In Action (POW-MIA) remembrance ceremonies and has served as the state POW-MIA Chairman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Departments of Alabama and North Carolina, and is a past National Aide-de-Camp. He is also an All-State and All-American Post Commander. Dave is an Eagle Scout and served in scouting as a Troop Chartered Organization Representative, Eagle Scout advisor, and as State and National Scouter for the VFW.Completing 31 years of marathon racing, and locally known as the “Ray Road Runner,” Dave has finished 131 marathons in all 50 states, and has two Boston Marathon finishes. Nicknamed “Scrappy” in the Fort Bragg, NC ice hockey community, he is a bronze and silver medalist team winner of the annual North Carolina State Games .Dave is a motivational speaker on fitness and self-preservation, and Air Force history and heritage. "Navigating the Battlefield of the Civilian Job Market: Understanding the Roadblocks Veterans Face"  In the grand tapestry of our nation's history, few threads are as vibrant and solemn as the recognition of our military service members. "Honoring the Sacrifices: The Deep Significance of Veterans Day" is more than a mere commemoration; it's a journey through the heart of what it means to stand in the ranks of those who've served. As we delve into the essence of military service recognition, we not only honor military veterans but also shed light on the profound impact of their sacrifices on our daily lives.  For many, Veterans Day might appear as a fleeting moment on the calendar, marked by parades and speeches. However, its significance runs deeper, resonating through every fabric of our society. This blog post aims to unravel the layers of this importance, addressing the primary question: why do we dedicate a day to our veterans, and how does this recognition shape our collective consciousness? By exploring this topic, we aim to heighten Veteran Affairs awareness, offering insights into the unique experiences of our heroes in uniform and the enduring legacy they leave behind. The Unique Skill Set of Veterans The military instills unmatched leadership qualities and discipline. These skills are incredibly beneficial in any job setting, though often undervalued in the civilian workforce. Veterans are trained to adapt quickly to changing situations—a skill highly relevant in today's fast-paced business world. Their experience in teamwork and collaborative problem-solving is also a significant asset.  Roadblocks in Civilian Job Market Entry  One of the biggest challenges veterans face is translating their military skills to civilian job requirements. The unique military jargon and roles can create barriers in effectively communicating their competencies. The shift from military to civilian life encompasses more than just a job change. It involves adapting to a new culture and social environment, which can be daunting for many veterans.  Bridging the Military-Civilian Divide  There's a significant gap in understanding between military life and civilian sectors. Employers often struggle to comprehend the full scope of a veteran's experience and skills. Various programs and initiatives are in place to help bridge this gap. They aim to educate employers about the value of hiring veterans and assist veterans in articulating their skills. https://www.military.com/hiring-veterans/resources/educate-your-company-on-veteran-hiring-and-retention.html Financial Literacy and Career Planning Financial literacy and career planning are essential tools for veterans. Understanding the financial aspects of career transition and planning strategically can ease the process significantly. Financial Literacy has only recently (since 2019), become an educational touch point for all branches of service. Since financial literacy is not taught in our public school system, this is a step in the right direction for the military community. But there are still millions of veterans lacking in this much needed tool. I am proud to be aligned with Money Mentor Vets and their continued educational processes to support the Veteran community with Financial Literacy: https://www.moneymentor.org https://moneymentorvets.com/ The Power of Networking and Mentorship Mentorship, especially from fellow veterans who have successfully transitioned, can provide invaluable insights and guidance. Organizations such as AMVETS, The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans are valuable resources for networking with people who speak the same language and finding mentors who want to see our veterans succeed. Veterans Northeast Outreach Center is Haverhill is ready to return to its home base, recently damaged by a burst water pipe, and will honor its fallen, former leader during a rededication early next month. The Scott Forbes Memorial Intake Center is to be dedicated at the 10 Reed St., Haverhill, building. Veterans Northeast Outreach Center Outreach Coordinator Jim Behen discussed the reopening during an appearance Tuesday on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program.“Our event that's going on, on August 4, that's a Friday, at 10:30 a.m. will be the reopening of the center, and then also we will be dedicating our intake center office in memory of the late Scott Forbes, who was our past executive director who, unfortunately, took his life in March. One of Scott's big things was you couldn't help a veteran until you got him in the door. The first place you go when you come in the door is the intake center,” he said.Appearing with Behen was interim Executive Director William Kelly. He described damage from the burst water pipes this past February.“We had significant water damage on two floors of the building. Through some connections with some great contractors, we basically have the whole thing refurbished. We got a new floor, new walls, new paint. It looks like a brand-new building on the inside. It's just wonderful and will serve us into the future for a long, long time,” he said. From the day of the water disaster until now, Kelly said, Veterans Northeast Outreach Center received a tremendous amount of assistance from the AmVets.“I want to give a shout out to the AmVets Post 147 on Primrose Street, right here in Haverhill. They opened their doors to us to relocate to operate there. We maintained our food pantry every week. We continued to engage with outreach for Veterans and all of our services. But we couldn't have done it without them,” he explained.Behen is asking people planning to attend the rededication to reserve a seat by emailing jbehen@vneoc.org.Support the show

A humble man, Sherman attributes his success to the many people who helped him along the way and talks about how a leader's success is a product of his follower's beliefs. Sherman believes that a leader's readiness is measured by their accountability for every aspect of their team's well-being. As a leader, Sherman stresses the importance of making enough mistakes and learning from them to build trusting relationships with your team. Sherman and Chris recount the many “holes” they must overcome to get to their positions today. Furthermore, Sherman shares how it is important to align your experience with your mission and reflect the constituency of the people you are trying to serve. Through NAMI, Sherman has shared his story and strength with countless other veterans and propelled them through their difficulties. Through his relentless character and valiant journey, Sherman demonstrates that no obstacles can stop a determined leader, as long as they have a passion to change someone's life and make a difference in their world. Additional Biography:Sherman Gillums Jr. is a retired U.S. Marine officer and former senior executive at Paralyzed Veterans of America and AMVETS, two of the largest congressionally chartered veterans service organizations in the country. For 17 years, he has fought to remove barriers to timely access to quality care and worked to reduce unemployment and suicide among the nation's most vulnerable veterans, as well as military families and caregivers. He has testified on Capitol Hill, engaged the White House on a host of issues, and appeared on major networks such as CNN, NPR, and C-SPAN, and in national print media as an influential voice on policy and government accountability. He was selected by HillVets as among the 100 Most Influential Persons in 2016 and one of the Mighty 25 Military Influencers by “We Are The Mighty” in 2020.Sherman holds a graduate degree from the University of San Diego School of Business Administration and completed his executive education at Harvard Business School. Sherman enlisted in the Marines at age 17; twelve years later, shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and while preparing to deploy to Afghanistan with the 1st Marine Division, he suffered a spinal cord injury (SCI) in an automobile accident. At age 29, this recipient of two Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medals, a Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a Global War on Terror Service Medal, was paralyzed and honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. He turned to Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), the advocacy organization founded by returning WWII service members with spinal cord injuries, for support in re-entering the job market after his SCI. Not only did he find a career he enjoys - and return to school for a master's degree - but, today Sherman is PVA's Associate Executive Director for Veterans Benefits, overseeing field services, vocational rehabilitation services, and architecture services. He reflects upon the extraordinary courage and determination he mustered on his path to recovery, being able to reach out for help and not only survive, but become that person who can extend a helping hand.https://www.linkedin.com/in/sherman-gillums-jr-8148231a9/https://nami.org/Home

A tradition continues Sunday when the Veterans Alliance of Greater Haverhill holds its pre-election breakfast in Haverhill. The breakfast was started by former state Rep. Brian S. Dempsey, but City Councilor Michael S. McGonagle took it over in 2017 on behalf of the city's veterans. At the time, he noted, veterans' organizations' fundraising efforts had been curtailed by the city's ban on roadside charity collections that had been called a safety concern. This past Tuesday, Maureen Menzie, an Alliance member, told the Haverhill City Council about the organization.“The Veterans Alliance of Greater Haverhill is a nonprofit board, dedicated to providing assistance to veterans and we help when and where it is needed,” she said.Menzie said the group has raised $53,000 since 2017 and 100% of the money goes to veterans.McGonagle, appearing this week on WHAV's morning program, said sponsors can still help assemble a four-by-six-foot jigsaw puzzle of an American Flag. The breakfast takes place Sunday, Oct. 31, from 9-11 a.m., at AmVets Post 147, 576 Primrose St., Haverhill.“So, sponsors are able to sponsor a stripe for $1,000, a star for $250. We get the politicians to sponsor the placemat for $50 a donation and they are able to mingle with the crowd. I'm expecting maybe 80 to 100 people at the breakfast on Sunday, hopefully, and we hope to raise a lot of money for the Veterans Alliance of Greater Haverhill,” he explained.Admission to the breakfast is $5, but veterans and seniors are free. McGonagle says money raised is used to support the organizations that are helping veterans in the Merrimack Valley.“The Korean War Veterans, the VFW, the American Legion, the AmVets, the AmVets Ladies Auxiliary, the DAV Disabled American Veterans, and all these groups have expenses, and they do a lot of good. Some of the groups go and take care of veterans in the nursing homes and make sure they have the essentials that they need. That's why we created it, and that's what we do today,” he said. The breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, breakfast sandwiches and coffee. McGonagle says there are still stripes and stars available for sponsorship and those interested may call him at 978-502-7967.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

More than a dozen of Haverhill's living World War II veterans are to be recognized and celebrated during a ceremony later this month with a color guard, special tributes and live performances. The “World War II Recognition Ceremony” takes place Saturday, July 24, at 10 a.m., in Washington Square—home to the city's World War II Memorial. Haverhill Veteran Services Director Luis Santiago tells WHAV the celebration was put into motion by John DiVincenzo, son of World War II veteran Ralph DiVincenzo, who is 99, and the nephew of 95-year-old Loreto DiVincenzo.“They are looking to recognize their father and uncle who  have sacrificed their time in war when we had basically an enemy who was foreign, and thanks to individuals like his father and uncle, we aren't speaking a different language today,” Santiago says.Santiago says he expects 14 veterans and the event includes a live performance by the Sons of Italy Drum and Bugle Corps and guest speakers. He's looking forward to having the community come together.“I want to give out a special thank you to Dean Thayer who is president of the AmVets. I would also like to give thanks to Erica Webb and Renee Ouelette from the Sons of Italy, Mr. Chris Manning who is the commander for the American Legion and for Vianelis Rodriguez who is the service manager for VNOC, Veterans Northeast Outreach Center. These are the volunteers who are helping me coordinate this ceremony, and it's going to be a nice day to actually recognize the individuals who need no introduction,” he notes.Santiago says the ceremony is especially important since World War II veterans are “up there in age.”“Unfortunately they are a dying breed, which is sad to say. It hurts my heart just to even think it. Just their bravery and what they've done for this country is unparallelled. It's one of those things we have to take it as it comes, as society changes and time goes on, they will always be remembered in history as our forever heroes,” he says. The program was originally scheduled for this past Saturday, but was rescheduled. Rolling to Remember sponsored by AMVETS is a motorcycle ride that occurs annually in Washington, DC over Memorial Day Weekend. This year will be the second annual Rolling to Remember Ride following a three decade-long ride hosted by Rolling Thunder. The ride calls for further efforts to recover American POW/MIA's as well as awareness for veteran suicide. It is estimated an upward of 50,000 motorcyclists will be in DC for this event next weekend. However, this year the event has been shadowed in controversy, when just weeks prior to the event, the Department of Defense turned down AMVETS request to use the Pentagon Parking Lot as an event staging space. AMVETS has worked very hard in the past few weeks to circumvent this set-back and drive-on with the mission, to fully execute the Rolling to Remember Ride. Joseph Chenelly, Executive Director for AMVETS, National Headquarters joins Carry On Podcast to provide our listeners with the most up-to-date logistical details and an inside look into who in Washington, DC was willing to go the extra mile to ensure this patriotic ride still occurred. He is an advocate for military veterans and has served as a spokesman for larger organizations including AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans and the US Marine Corp. He is also the first veteran of combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq to lead one of the nation's four largest veterans service organizations.

It was a blast! The people in attendance were absolutely motivated. It was like watching dream unfold into reality. Hearing the stories of the participants, reflecting back on my own experiences, and enjoying every moment. We got to meet so many inspiring people who are absolutely dedicated to contributing to the mission of assisting those who are in need. Right before I went to meet and greet everyone I had the pleasure of being on Boone Cutler's "Tipping Point". It is a show that's mission is to move and grow the Warrior Right's Movement by providing some precious insight to the warrior mentality and ethos. Here's the links to check out more. http://boonecutler.comWhen I walked into the event it was like walking into my dream gym MetroFlex Gym ( http://metroflexlbc.com ) has the vibe of a true training facility. Not that shit you get at your local 24hour cesspool of perverts and fat bodies not trying hard, this place gives you a pump just by being there! With the American flag waiving next to all the service flags it was hard not to jump in on the push up competition lead by the one and only CT Fletcher! ( http://ctfletcher.com )As I made my rounds interviewing people from: Team Rubicon ( http://www.teamrubiconusa.org ), Sharon Elefant and Jeff Fabry from Team AMVETS ( http://www.teamamvets.com ), Chris Albert from Warrior Soul Apparel ( http://www.warriorsoulapparel.com ) and last but not least the men who brought the world and the entire community of warriors Ronin Veterans Network ( http://www.roninvn.org ) Kameron DeLany, Glen Stevenson, Ryan Carrillo, and James Shannon. The story began to really show itself. People are motivated to help!Watching the entire event was like seeing the dream of unification coming true! Listening to all reasons for being there and the way their passion has helped so many, was truly empowering. We all have struggles, pains, difficulties, and reasons that hold us back, there are times where we feel we can not succeed. There are people here to help, there are others struggling that have made it a little bit further and are giving back. As a community we owe it to ourselves and to our friends, families, and Nation to live the best life possible and thrive on! The feelings of optimism and hope that this event brought me is something we all should be going after. Let's get off our asses and Unify!
