As families across the world were gathering for Christmas morning in 2008, a concerned son-in-law in Newry, Northern Ireland, was trying to reach his elderly mother-in-law. She hadn't been answering her phone, and worry had set in. Deciding to check on her in person, he made his way to her home on Dublin Road. But when he stepped into her quiet house, he was met with a sight so horrific it would haunt him—and the close-knit community—for years to come.SPONSORS - SmartLabels: Prepare for the New Year ahead with SmartLabels. Join us on a stroll along North Circular Road from Phoenix Park to the Dublin Docklands with our guide Luke McManus, the documentary filmmaker of the award-winning North Circular which opens in New York City on July 28th.Rendered in graphic black & white over a soundtrack of local North Circular musicians, the film gives voice to narratives from the history of the city and nation, from colonialism to mental health, from women's liberation to the battle to save the legendary folk revival venue the Cobblestone Pub from thewrecking ball.Growing up in Bray, the home of Ardmore Studios, Luke recounts that first moment he realized that he was a director, why Humphrey Bogart holds sucha lofty position in his pantheon of film greats, and the many ways to make a living in film.Co-host John Lee diverts him into a conversation about horse racing which Luke explored in his film about the legendary ‘chaser Arkle and his TV series on the women in the sport, Jump Girls. Martin Nutty gets Luke talking about Crainn na hÉireann (The Trees of Ireland), the documentary series he did with past guest Manchán Magan .But the centerpiece of the episode is North Circular, where Luke celebrates the beauty in urban grit, the serendipity found along the street, the juxtaposition of squatters and the shadows of skyscraping construction cranes, and the expressive power of music to honor the tragic and celebrate the spirit, all ending on an exuberant high note provided by Irish women in music and sport.Step off with us on our trek through North Circular with Luke McManus LinksWebsitesNorth Circular - Film websiteLuke McManus - Personal siteLuke McManus - VimeoLuke's Social MediaLinkedInTwitterInstagram

St Patrick's Boys National School Announced 2022 Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Champions. Over 75 primary school children went to battle with their self-designed sumo wrestling robots at the 7th annual Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Competition. Students from St Patrick's Boys National School have crowned the 2022 Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Champions at the STEM-inspired challenge which took place in Limerick this weekend. Teams of 10 to 12-year-olds from 24 schools across Limerick City and County gathered in Analog Devices Campus in Raheen, Limerick early on Saturday morning to build and program their own robots before entering the ring and pitting their robotic creations against each other, sumo-style, that afternoon. Over 100 supporters cheered on the children during the highly competitive finale which awarded points for teamwork as well as design and innovation. Fionn Ott, Bruno Ulej and Odhran Yanto from St Patrick's National School, Dublin Road, Limerick won the overall competition and Kristiana Suares, Ellie Mai O'Dell and Óran Conlon from Thomond Primary School were runners up. The aim of the hugely popular event is to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) amongst primary school students by giving them a flavour of engineering through the opportunity to design, build, test and program their own robots. The children are encouraged to work as part of a team, express creativity, problem solve and have fun whilst at the same time learning key STEM principles. Announcing the winners, Jim Nagle, Senior Director – Manufacturing, Analog Devices, said, “It was wonderful to witness the teamwork, creativity, energy and excitement amongst our young competitors. Our aim is to provide a fun and engaging hands-on learning experience that will encourage children to stay curious and enthusiastic about STEM subjects and the opportunities ahead. Everyone certainly seemed to have fun today.” Ann O'Sullivan, Director – Process Development & Resilience, Analog Devices added, “The school's robotics program is very important to us at Analog Devices. From feedback, we know it provides engagement on a level some schools may not have the means to access. This early experience of robotics design captures the imaginations of so many students. They are simultaneously getting an appreciation of STEM principles and problem-solving as well as a taste of the exciting challenges that a career in engineering could offer.” Now in its seventh year, more than 4,900 students across Limerick city and country have participated in the Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Competition. The first stage of the competition started months in advance when Analog Devices opened registration to all primary schools with more than 120 pupils in the Limerick city/county region. Each school that registered received a free Robotics workshop where 5th and 6th class students learn to build and program a robot using Lego WeDo kits. After building their robot in the classroom, each team competed against each other for the chance to represent their school in the Analog Devices Primary Schools Robotics Final Competition. Finals day began with a more advanced robotics workshop to further develop and build on their learnings from the first round of classroom-based workshops. A new robot challenge was set which tasked the students to design and program a robot for sumo wrestling. In the afternoon, each team played a series of matches in the pool stages with the top teams going forward to the tense and exciting play-offs where the final points were allocated. At the end of the showdown, the team with the highest points was crowned the overall winner. Previous winners include Scoil Ide (2015), St Patrick's Girls NS (2016), Our Lady Queen of Peace NS (2017), Killoughteen NS (2018), Scoil Mhuire Broadford (2019) and St Patricks N.S Bruree (2020). What began as an impromptu collection in Galway for the people of Ukraine has snowballed into a massive outpouring of support and now organisers have some special news to share. But what is the next step and what will the impact of this major aid effort be? Sally-Ann spoke to Kasia Zaranek, the organiser of the aid truck initiative for Ukraine this morning.
On Christmas morning, 2008, 81 year old widow Maire Rankin was not answering the phone. Family members called around to her Newry home to check on her - not only had she been recently ill but it was totally out of character for her to not respond. When they arrived at the house on the Dublin Road, Maire was found dead on her bedroom floor. The house was a mess, and it appeared that Mrs Rankin had been subjected to a violent assault of a sexual nature. No one expected it when Maire's 42 year old neighbour was arrested. Not only was Karen Walsh a woman, she was a wealthy pharmacist who stayed in her second home in Newry on the weekends. What on earth had happened, and was the mother of one really responsible for the death of the elderly woman? ********** With thanks to our sponsors for this episode: Try the casual mobile puzzle game Best Fiends today! She was originally from County Clare, but had spent much of her working life in London, until the outbreak of World War Two. On the night of November 19th, 1954, she decided to walk back to her hospital from her last home visit. On the Dublin Road, she was spotted by a 24 year old carman, Michael Manning, who had been drinking all day. He attacked her, and she was killed on the roadside.
