Radio documentary ‘The Power of The People' examines the significant impact of the ‘Dunnes Strikers' on Ireland's relations with South Africa and their contribution to the abolition of apartheidOn 19 July 1984 Mary Manning, a shop worker in Dunnes Stores on Henry Street in Dublin, refused to handle two grapefruit which had been imported from South Africa following an instruction from her union as a protest for the apartheid policies in place in the country. Mary was suspended and thus started what would become one of the longest running strikes in trade union history.A new radio documentary produced by Kelly Crichton revisits the story, highlighting the tinder box atmosphere in Dunnes which helped lead to the strike, the evolution of the strikers' motivation and understanding as well as the dramatic and dangerous events that took place over the period of the strike. The documentary follows the journey of the strikers, from the lack of support they received from politicians, the government, the church and other groups to being heralded as heroes. It shares the support they received from key people like their union official Brendan Archbold and Nimrod Sejake, who joined them on the picket line and had been a cellmate and fellow member of the African National Congress(ANC) with Nelson Mandela. Other supporters included Archbishop Desmond Tutu who helped them gain international recognition and the Reverend Jess Jackson. It's a story of determination, perseverance, love and triumph through adversity. Dunnes were approached for comment. The documentary was supported by Coimisiún na Meán with the Television Licence Fee.

Ireland's high street – or main street if you prefer – has seen quite the evolution over the past hundred-odd years. Today, it is an arena of mixed fortunes. On one hand, the recent liquidation announcement of EuroGiant has thrown a popular discount chain's future into question. On the other, Dunnes Stores is just edging out Tesco as Ireland's most popular shopping store. Who gets the credit for such success? And what does it all mean for you, the valued consumer? Individual behaviour has been attributed as the cause of Ennis' significant fall in the latest anti-litter rankings. The county town has dropped from 2nd to 15th in the Irish Business Against Litter League's table and following the latest inspection, is no longer deemed 'Cleaner than European Norms'. While most areas of Ennis received A and B grades, the Deposit Return Scheme Machine area of Dunnes Stores received a C+ rating, with an obvious presence of black sacks, sweet wrappers and plastic bags bringing down the town's score. IBAL Spokesperson Conor Horgan insists it's a simple fix however.

In this episode, I sit down with the actor and activist Khalid Abdalla. Known for his roles in The Kite Runner and as Dodi Fayed in The Crown, Khaled joins me for a conversation that is as raw as it is necessary. We recorded this shortly after he received news of the passing of a cherished colleague and on-screen father, bringing a palpable sense of vulnerability to the space.Together, we explore the intersection of artistry and political struggle. Khaled reflects on his background as an actor of Arab descent, his involvement in the Egyptian Revolution, and the deep responsibility he feels to speak out against the ongoing violence in Gaza. We discuss the complexities of representation, the shift from professional solitude to collective solidarity, and why maintaining hope is a disciplined, communal act.Key TakeawaysThe Artist as Witness: Khaled discusses the evolution of his career, from graduating during the Iraq War to his current activism. He articulates why artists cannot remain neutral and how creative forms—whether film, writing, or music—must adapt to meet the political urgency of the moment.Representation Matters: We touch on the cultural significance of his role as Dodi Fayed in The Crown. Khaled explains how playing a character the audience is encouraged to love and mourn, rather than fear, challenges decades of harmful tropes regarding Arab identity in Western media. From Solitude to Solidarity: A central theme of our conversation is the journey from feeling isolated in speaking out to finding a vast, supportive community. Khaled shares how stepping past the fear of professional risk revealed unexpected circles of solidarity. The Non-Linearity of Change: Drawing on historical examples, such as the Dunnes Stores strike against apartheid, Khaled reminds us that small, seemingly impossible acts of resistance can ripple out to create monumental shifts over time.Episode Highlights01:45 – Khaled shares the grief he is carrying into the space following the loss of a revered colleague and on-screen father.07:50 – Reflections on playing Dodi Fayed and the rare opportunity to portray an Arab character that invites love rather than fear.16:00 – The initial loneliness of speaking out against the genocide in Gaza and the subsequent discovery of global solidarity.26:40 – Khaled discusses the painful conditioning of accepting the loss of Arab lives and the refusal to accept this for future generations.45:30 – A powerful story about the Dunnes Stores strike in Dublin and how a single grapefruit became a symbol of anti-apartheid resistance.About the GuestKhaled Abdalla is a British-Egyptian actor and activist. Ennis traders have secured a resolution to a dispute with Dunnes Stores which saw trucks prevented from carrying out deliveries. Two weeks ago, an electronic barrier was erected by the supermarket at the entrance to its loading bay which also serves businesses on Cook's Lane and O'Connell Street. Following a blockade of the barrier by the Retailers of Ennis Group as well as a meeting with Dunnes Stores management, a system has been established whereby business owners that use the loading bay can call a number to have the barrier lifted. John O'Connor of Custys Music Shop and Retailers of Ennis says it shows the power of engagement and dialogue.

The community group, Retailers of Ennis, imposed a blockade on the delivery entrance to Dunnes Stores on Friday in response to the retail giant's erection of an electronic barrier. The barrier came into operation on Thursday and is preventing delivery trucks from accessing businesses on O'Connell Street and Cook's Lane, as they have been doing since the arrival of Dunnes in Ennis in the early 1990s. Clare County Council says "the barrier was not sanctioned or erected by the Local Authority", while "pedestrian access is still being maintained at this location", and "any issues in respect of vehicle rights of way or access are considered to be civil matters". Ennis Retailers Blockade Dunnes Stores Delivery Entrance

Retailers of Ennis have imposed a blockade at the delivery entrance of a local supermarket amid claims of "bully-boy" tactics. It follows the erection of an electronic barrier by Dunnes Stores, which is denying delivery trucks access to Cook's Lane and O'Connell Street businesses. The barrier, which is operated by Dunnes Stores, has been in place since Thursday morning, and retailers aren't taking the development lying down. Since the arrival of the supermarket titan in Ennis decades ago, the loading bay located between it and the adjacent multi-storey car park, which extends as far as Cook's Lane, has been used by nearby traders for deliveries, as well as staff parking. This access has become all the more vital for the likes of Custys, Heaslips, Brogans and Cook's Lane Café in the last year with the pedestrianisation of O'Connell Street. Traders and concerned residents have responded to the barrier's installation this morning by blockading the area, thereby preventing Dunnes Stores delivery drivers from carrying out their duties. John O'Connor of Custys Music Shop and the Retailers of Ennis group says it's a David versus Goliath situation. Traders claim they've had no consultation with Dunnes Stores management, while it's understood the store didn't apply for planning permission in advance of installing the barrier. Paul Dillon of Cook's Lane Café claims he isn't being allowed to park in his designated space and that he now has no way of getting stock to his business. Retailers of Ennis say they'll impose a similar blockade next Friday if the matter isn't rectified by then. Lissycasey native Seán Keane is one person who has shown his support to the cause today. He says the retail giant is showing no regard for small businesses.

ePower is to supply over 20 shopping centres across 14 counties nationwide with high speed EV charging points, following a partnership agreement with Lanthorn, which manages a portfolio of over €1.6bn of property throughout Ireland. Rollout will begin in 2025, and the sites where chargers will be installed include Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway, as well as busy urban areas like Navan, Dundalk, Mullingar, Athlone, Maynooth, Portlaoise and Kilkenny. ?ePower is working closely with Lanthorn in association with their project managers, KSNPM. ePower has been selected following a competitive process, which took into account the company's ability to offer high speed charging facilities, tailored specifically to each site, and crucially, the assurance that the sites would be maintained and serviced by ePower's 24/7 help desk, field engineering and remote management. Commenting on the development, John O'Keeffe, CEO of Power, said: "We're very proud to be part of the drive towards making electric vehicles a better choice for consumers. The rollout and delivery of chargers, be it through public or private partnerships, is key to this. Through this partnership with Lanthorn, ePower plans to have super-fast chargers installed at shopping centres around Ireland, from Donegal to Cork and many places in between; it's a great expansion for us in what's been a hugely successful year of growth." It's been a busy year for ePower; the company recently joined forces with Dublin's local authorities to bring online up to 200 fast chargers across the region in 2025. The initial phase of the project will see ePower's high-speed chargers installed at more than 40 Dublin locations across the four Dublin local authorities. The company also won six of 17 government contracts for the rollout of new high-speed electric car charging hubs across Ireland, due to be operational by the end of 2025. He has over 11 cookbooks, countless TV shows, a meal planning web platform (donalskitchen.com), a collab with Dunnes Stores and many others strings to his bow.And on top of all that, Donal has recently become embroiled in a wonderfully frivolous and entertaining Eurosong feud, involving contenstent Samantha Mumba, and his fellow judges Laura Fox, Arthur Gourounlian and Bambi Thug. Calls For Improved Personal Behaviour To Deter Ennis Littering

It's claimed improvements in personal behaviour will be the driving force in stamping out littering in Ennis. The county town has fallen eight places in the latest Irish Business Against Litter rankings, which have just been published, with An Taisce's report determining the county town is no longer cleaner than European Norms. Ten sites in Ennis were assessed as part of the judging process. Half received an ‘A' Grade, beginning with the Westfield Housing Estate, where inspectors commended house-proud beautiful flower arrangements and a complete absence of litter. The dualcarriageway from Skehanagh Roundabout to Clare Abbey Roundabout was also recognised for its cleanliness, along with the approach road from the Kilrush Roundabout and the stretch from Rocky Road Roundabout to Kilrush Road Roundabout, which was described as a "very good impression, with a striking sculpture." Cathedral Court rounded off the top tier ratings for its "well maintained residential site." Merchants Square, O'Connell Street and Ennis Bus and Train Station each earned a B+ rating, with small amounts of litter noted in all. Notably, judges described the public realm enhancements as "looking fantastic" and the station to be "much improved from its condition two years ago." Issues with alcohol related litter in the grass and hedges were flagged at Kilrush Road Car Park, which received a B Grade. The worst performing area in Ennis, meanwhile, was Dunnes Stores, where the surface area car park and store entrance, gave "the overall impression of a littered environment." Most items were food related, along with significant quantities of receipts, with accumulations in trolley bays, grass verges and hedges. IBAL Spokesperson Conor Horgan says the issues in Ennis are not major and require improvements in personal habits. Ultimately Ennis was judged to be ‘clean to European Norms' and finished 13th overall in the Irish Business Against Litter League for 2024; falling eight places on its position from six months ago. Between March and September, Ennis Tidy Towns had a record number of volunteers collected an average of 20 bags of rubbish every night. Ennis Tidy Towns member and Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard says given their efforts, the result is disappointing, but believes there are simple initiatives that can change the tide. Overall, Naas retained top spot and was one of 13 towns cleaner than European Norms. Limerick City and Galway's Inner-City were both judged to be littered, while Dublin's North Inner City was the only ‘seriously littered' area nationwide.

Solidarity WorksForty years ago this month, ten workers from the Henry Street branch of Dunnes Stores in Dublin's city centre went on strike to protest against the selling of produce from Apartheid South Africa. A year later, the group was joined by another worker, Brendan Barron, from the Crumlin store, bringing their number to eleven. The strike lasted for almost three years. I remember it well. I joined the picket line a few times and Sinn Féin and An Phoblacht were firm supporters of the Dunnes Store strikers. Their courageous stand led to the Dublin government banning South African goods from Irish stores. The strike followed a decision by the Irish Distributive and Administrative Union IDATU, now the Mandate union, not to handle South African produce. Release Leonard Peltier Earlier this month 79 year old native American indigenous activist Leonard Peltier was denied parole. He won't be eligible now for another parole hearing until June 2026. His legal team will appeal the decision.Leonard has consistently denied that he was responsible for killing of two FBI agents in 1975. His family and supporters are now deeply concerned that after almost 50 years in prison that Leonard will die there as his health has severely deteriorated in recent years. Lies and HypocrisyLies, hypocrisy, double standards, starvation, and the mass murder of civilians have been essential tools in the Israeli government's genocidal war against the Palestinian people. Some have also been a feature of the policies and propaganda employed by those governments allied to Israel's war strategy. Last week Russian missiles destroyed much of a children's hospital in Kyiv. A wave of other similar attacks took place against cities across the Ukraine. There was justifiable criticism of Russia which this column shares. Meanwhile the deliberate destruction of so-called ‘safe zones' in Gaza by Israeli bombers continues using armaments supplied by western powers. Over a hundred and fifty Palestinians are known to have been killed. Many hundreds more have been left grievously injured trapped in a place that has almost no medical facilities or resources.

At 23, she went to Italy without having a job lined up and not being able to speak Italian and worked across the world but came back to Ireland to become the design director for Ireland's largest retailer, Dunnes Stores and marry her soulmate. Before setting up PEELO she had worked at John Rocha in Dublin, Marni in Milan, and John Galliano's studio in Paris, DVF and was asked to re-invent the Juicy Couture brand. She and Yvonne discuss her journey and the role manifestation played. KEY TAKEAWAYS From a relatively early age Julie has followed her gut instincts and took risks. You cannot manifest something out of thin air. You have to take action, hustle for it, and work hard. When you see an opportunity, be brave and take it. Sometimes it can take a couple of years for everything to fall into place. Visualisation is enormously powerful for manifestation. The universe throws you challenges. Follow your gut when deciding how to tackle them. If bad things happen, decide what to do about it, then move on. BEST MOMENTS ‘You gotta hustle a little bit. I worked my ass off which got me an absolute dream job in my 20s. ´ ‘It was just really wild and creative.' ‘I am trying to target cruise ships because I think that would be interesting for my business.'   GUEST AND EPISODE RESOURCES https://peelo.ie/ VALUABLE RESOURCES website: pausepenny.com Instagram: @yvonnetchrakian_manifest @pause.penny LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yvonne-tchrakian-64257619/   HOST BIO Yvonne started her career as a corporate lawyer for one of Ireland's top law firms. In this Global Irish conversation, we search for the true origins of Western Civilization with a most global of guests, Naoíse Mac Sweeney, author of The West: A New History in Fourteen Lives. Her father is from Cork City, her mother is Malaysian Chinese, she grew up in London, studied the Greek and Roman world, and is a professor of classical archaeology at the University of Vienna. And to make her even more global, her husband is from Malta, which we visited in our episode with Malta's ambassador to Ireland, Giovanni Buttigeig. She tells of how both Greek and Irish mythology pulled her into the ancient world, through the lure of the ancient Greek diaspora communities, her fascination with Troy, and her growing realization that “Western Civilization”—the concept of a single cultural inheritance extending from ancient Greece to modern times—is really a figment of our collective imagination. In The West, our award-winning guest thoroughly debunks that figment through the stories of fourteen figures who each played a role in the creation of the Western idea—from Herodotus, a mixed-race migrant, to Phylis Wheatley, an enslaved African American who became a literary sensation. From these narratives, a more nuanced, expansive, and intriguing view of the West emerges.Naoíse wraps up Irish Stew with the most unexpected “Seamus Plug” to date, which got your co-hosts thinking of approaching Dunnes Stores for sponsorship. And we'll happily endorse her comment early in the conversation, when she said, “part of the joy of following Irish Stew is to hear the origin stories of so many people in the diaspora.”Links:The West: A New History in Fourteen Lives Smithsonian Magazine:  “The Myth of the ‘Dark Ages' Ignores How Classical Traditions Flourished Around the World,”  University of Vienna: Naoise Mac SweeneySeamus Plug: Dunnes Strores, Helen James plates
