What We Know In the new city of Mulberry, four out of five City Council races were decided in a special election, with a runoff needed for District 5 between Doug Ingram and Michele Y. Sims. Ingram received 40.65% of the vote, while Sims got 33.97%. Incoming council members Tim Sullivan, Michael Coker, Kyle Shields, and Michael Rudnick won decisively, with Sullivan, Coker, and Rudnick securing over 70% of the votes in their respective districts. The new council will convene in January 2025, taking over from a transition team, and will select a mayor and establish the city government. STORY 5:  Charitable giving part of end-of-year tax decisions As 2024 ends, many consider donating to charities for tax benefits. Dr. Benjamin Akins from Georgia Gwinnett College explains that while most people use the standard IRS deduction, itemizers can benefit more by donating, especially if their income rises due to bonuses or required minimum distributions from retirement accounts. Donor-advised funds (DAFs) offer a flexible way to donate and claim deductions. Donating appreciated stocks or property can also provide tax advantages. Akins advises verifying a charity's tax-deductible status and keeping records for deductions. We condemn the Israeli Army's siege and indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza, where U.S.-made weapons have contributed to the loss of more than 25,105 Palestinian lives  and left more than 62,681wounded or dying without hospitals to stop the bleeding.  Children are experiencing the suffering and consequences from decisions made by Adults. We cannot allow them to suffer for the horrific decisions they did not make.  We as Duluthians are standing up to Protect innocent childrens lives. Children make up over 47% of the population of Gaza according to UNICEF. Its estimated 3 children are being killed every day by the Israeli Army. Bombs, disease and starvation in addition to having their parents killed is the triple threat facing them according to UNICEF every day we allow this to continue Two abducted Israeli children must be unconditionally and safely released. “With every passing day, children and families in the Gaza Strip face increased risk of death from the sky, disease from lack of safe water, and deprivation from lack of food. And for the two remaining Israeli children still held hostage in Gaza, their nightmare that began on 7 October continues.” It is our moral obligation to leverage our collective power to end the escalation of death and ongoing humanitarian crises. We have three demands. We demand an immediate, permanent ceasefire and the immediate release of all Israeli and Palestinian hostages.  We urge the Duluth City Council and US to facilitate unimpeded UN-supervised humanitarian aid in Gaza. This includes but is not limited to the immediate delivery of lifesaving aid, the reconstruction, restabilization, and return of Palestinians displaced from their homes and neighborhoods.   We urge the Duluth City Council and the US to condition funding to Israel on its adherence to humanitarian law just as is required for every other nation that receives our citizens tax dollars through US aid and funding.  United in shared humanity, we collectively urge the Duluth City Council  to leverage its power to end the genocide in Gaza. A ceasefire is just the beginning. The staggering civilian casualties and rising global hate crimes highlight a fundamental truth: there is no military resolution to this invasion. We understand the safety and security of Israelis and Palestinians to be inextricably intertwined, a safety predicated on a long-term diplomatic solution. Further, we condemn weaponization of this violence to justify anti-semetic and anti-Arab, especially anti-Palestinian, attacks and abuse and  intimidation across Duluth and  the nation.  We stand on our faiths, our conscience and human and civic responsibility to speak up for children and preserve the sanctity of human life here in Duluth and across the world in Gaza. Despite two juries being unable to reach a verdict on the murder charge, Ford was sentenced for theft by taking and concealing the death of another charges. The lack of direct evidence and the defense's argument that Lang may have committed suicide made the case challenging to prove. Tori Lang's body was found in Yellow River Park in 2021 with a gunshot wound, and her identity was initially unknown until her tattoos helped identify her. Ford was charged with her death later in 2022.………….. read more at gwinnettdailypost.com   STORY 2: van Gwinnett County police are seeking a Hispanic male accused of breaking into a work van and stealing tools from Posada's Trucks, a used car dealership in Norcross. The theft occurred at 5000 Singleton Road on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The suspect allegedly entered the parked van, took off his backpack, and rummaged through it. The dealership's owners noticed missing tools from the van, although the surveillance video did not capture all of the suspect's actions. The suspect is described as having a slim build, wearing a grey T-shirt, blue jeans, and carrying a camo print backpack. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers. Story 3: alarm A significant police presence was observed at Collins Hill High School due to a reported possible trespasser. An employee reported the presence of a trespasser inside the school, prompting a swift response from Gwinnett police. However, it was later confirmed to be a false alarm. The individual mistaken for a trespasser turned out to be an authorized construction worker. The situation was swiftly resolved, and the police assured that the students were not in danger. The Jackson EMC Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, manages funds collected from members participating in Operation Round Up and allocates grants to charitable causes. Anderson, with extensive experience in human resources, has been involved in community service, including the Jackson County Habitat for Humanity. Johnson, a banking industry professional, serves as the Board Chair of Spirit of Sharing, a nonprofit organization in Winder. Both individuals bring a strong commitment to community improvement and service.   Story 5: pope   Erica Pope, a Dacula resident, has announced her candidacy for an at-large seat on the Dacula City Council. With a focus on creating a vibrant, engaged, and transparent community, Pope aims to bring about change at the local level. The election for the at-large seat, along with other City Council seats, is scheduled for November 7. Pope believes that initiating change in policy starts from the grassroots level and is excited to contribute to her city's development. Qualifying for the seats will take place over a three-day period next week at Dacula City Hall.   Story 6: council Shenée Holloway, a veteran educator and Duluth Planning Commissioner, is launching her campaign for a seat on the Duluth City Council. She will be running for the City Council Post 5 seat currently held by Greg Whitlock, who is running for mayor, creating an open race for the council seat. Holloway's campaign emphasizes her advocacy for equity in planning and zoning on the Duluth Planning Commission, as well as her commitment to the city's success. Her official campaign kickoff is scheduled for August 22, and she brings a strong background in education and community engagement. Duluth's municipal election, including the mayoral and council seats, will take place on November 7.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3:  ESOG – Ingles 9 - Lawrenceville   Story 7: archer And now, Leah McGrath, corporate dietician at Ingles markets talks with us about foods that help with swollen feet Archer's sophomore quarterback Jordan Do shined in the team's televised season opener against North Forsyth, leading his team to a 35-16 victory in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic. Do fell just short of 300 total yards, with 277 passing yards and 32 rushing yards. He connected with fellow sophomore Jonathan Stafford Jr. for two touchdowns, while also throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Michel. Despite two interceptions by C.J. Lenyszyn, Do's performance was remarkable, completing 28 of 46 passes and effectively contributing to his team's win.   Story 8: Bolden   K.J. Bolden, a senior football player at Buford High School, is recognized as a consensus five-star recruit and one of the nation's top players. Standing at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Bolden is ranked as the No. 7 player nationally, No. 1 safety nationally, and No. 2 prospect in Georgia according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Despite his already impressive skill set, Bolden's continuous improvement is highlighted by his coach Bryant Appling, who praises his work ethic and dedication to refining his weaknesses. Bolden's enhanced physicality has positioned him as a projected college-level safety, although he plays defensive back and wide receiver for Buford. His transition to Buford from Atlanta has proven successful, offering better opportunities and a strong football program.   Story 9:  loss   In the opening game of the 2023 season, Collins Hill football faced a 27-13 loss against Milton due to six turnovers. Despite showing promise in the box score with 17 first downs compared to Milton's 10, the turnovers proved detrimental. Coach Drew Swick, leading his alma mater, expressed disappointment in the self-inflicted wounds. Collins Hill struggled to gain ground offensively, with quarterback T.J. Wilcox displaying potential in passing and punting. Wide receiver Quentin Grambo stood out with five receptions for 81 yards. Milton's quarterback Luke Nickel had 184 passing yards and two touchdowns, while their defense successfully contained Collins Hill. Angela Gary, executive director of trauma and emergency services at NGMC, expressed gratitude for the recognition, praising the hard work and dedication of the emergency care team. Additionally, NGMC Gainesville and NGMC Lumpkin's emergency departments have received accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians in Pain and Addiction Care, recognizing their comprehensive programs for patients suffering from pain and/or addiction.   Story 3: music The Lawrenceville-Suwanee School of Music is celebrating its move and expansion to a larger 11,000-square-foot facility on Collins Hill Road, Gwinnett County. The school, which offers music and art lessons, has grown from 25 to nearly 1,200 students, necessitating the move from its previous 3,400-square-foot location. The celebration event on July 29 will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, free trial lessons, student performances, a musical petting zoo, and more. The event took place on July 28 while DAR Daughters from across the nation attended the 132 Continental Congress in Washington, D.C. The officers present were Second Vice Regent Caitlen Green, Treasurer Kathy Schmidt, Regent Lynn Jacques, and First Vice Regent Randi Minor. The ceremony was accompanied by other organizations, including the Button Gwinnett Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Elisha Winn Society, Children of the American Revolution.   Story 5: lodge   The annual Cops and Kids Back-to-School event organized by Connie Chesser and the Fraternal Order of Police of Gwinnett — Lodge 66 provided about a hundred children and their parents with backpacks filled with school supplies, socks, and a $50 voucher for shoes. The event also offered vouchers for eye exams and glasses. Shoe Carnival discounted shoes for the children, who were able to pick a pair they liked. The event aims to help children make a good impression when returning to school and build community trust between the police department and Gwinnett citizens. The event was funded by donations from citizens and support from America's Best and Shoe Carnival.   Story 6:  carden   Gwinnett County Commissioner Kirkland Carden is formally kicking off his bid for re-election to a second term. Carden, who previously served on the Duluth City Council, is focusing his campaign on making the "American Dream" attainable for Gwinnettians, with a focus on job opportunities with purpose, affordable home ownership, and other policy proposals such as parental leave, rental assistance, and addressing mental health needs. He plans to focus on public safety, transportation, and affordable housing in his second term, in response to the county's growth and needs. While the county was praised as a national benchmark organization, the assessment identified concerns such as outdated processes, infrastructure, employee workload, lack of data tracking, and communication gaps. Specific departments, like Community Services and the Public Library system, faced challenges related to decision-making, program criticism, and inconsistent messaging. The county officials received the assessment report from Mauldin & Jenkins and plan to review and implement the recommendations for ongoing improvements. The Law Day Awards recognize local bar associations for their outstanding efforts in planning and executing activities to commemorate Law Day. The Best Newsletter Awards recognize voluntary bar associations that provide exceptional informational resources based on their size. Similarly, the Best Website Awards acknowledge local and voluntary bar associations that have websites demonstrating excellence in content, design, usefulness, and ease of use. The State Bar of Georgia sponsors these awards annually to support and encourage local and voluntary bar associations in their service programs and to promote the improvement of justice administration and the positive image of lawyers. Story 3:  housing The Gwinnett Housing Corporation and Lawrenceville Housing Authority are hosting a bilingual Housing Resource Expo at Central Gwinnett High School on July 15. Over 20 housing agencies will participate in the event, which aims to provide residents facing housing challenges with information about available resources. The expo will focus on emergency housing, home ownership, rental opportunities, and home improvement programs. The Gwinnett Housing Corporation CEO, Lejla Prljaca, expressed concerns about rising housing prices and the impact on affordability for Gwinnett County residents. Holtz Municipal Training Institute Certificate of Recognition. The institute, a collaboration between GMA and the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government, offers a series of nationally recognized training opportunities for city officials. To earn the certificate, Graeder completed a minimum of 42 units of credit, including required classes totaling at least 18 hours. The program offers over 70 courses, and GMA CEO Larry Hanson commended Graeder for his dedication to becoming a more effective city official. The partnership between GMA and UGA aims to provide high-quality training to Georgia's municipal officials, enhancing their leadership and professional development skills.   Story 5: respiratory   Gwinnett Technical College's Respiratory Care program has gained recognition as one of the top programs in the United States. The program boasts a remarkable 10-year streak of 100 percent pass rates on the national credentialing exam for respiratory care. In acknowledgment of this achievement, the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) will present the college with the Distinguished RRT Credentialing Success Award. This honor is awarded to institutions that demonstrate exceptional outcomes, including high credentialing success rates and meeting CoARC's established thresholds for various criteria. Gwinnett Tech's program prepares students for careers as respiratory care therapists by equipping them with the latest medical technology and training. The season two finale of For The Love Of Duluth features a huge name in Duluth: Dan Hartman, the Executive Director of the DECC. He started the big job in summer of 2021 and ever since, has been making the epicenter of entertainment even bigger and better. This week, the Duluth City Council unanimously approved adding a third deputy police chief tasked with, among other things, a focus on police accountability. But Jamey Sharp, the founder of what he calls the "grassroots data group" LEANDuluth, says whether it's 50 new deputy chiefs or one new chief, it doesn't matter if they're not willing to look outside the police department itself for answers. He's particularly concerned about "use of force" incidents from 2019 , which showed police employing force with Black Duluthians 19 times more often than with white residents, and ten times more often with Native Americans. But Sharp says he was most impressed with the people who shared their personal stories of troubling interactions with the police, interactions that can dehumanize, traumatize or even end in death. In November, Renee Van Nett was the first female Native American elected to the Duluth City Council. "I didn't even think about that part until somebody said it publicly in that language and I thought, 'Oh, really?' " said Van Nett.
