It's not everyday you get to sit down with a producer who found out only hours earlier that he is Oscar-nominated and could very well win best picture. That's exactly how my January 23rd began chatting with Alex Coco, producer of ANORA. I saw the film IN THEATERS with my husband and as a Sean Baker fan, I naturally had to get his producer on the show. Lucky for us, he said yes!
Mike Long sat with James Gregory to write his life story, “A Bushel of Beans and a Peck of Tomatoes.” Mike joins the YJHTL podcast to tell us more about James Gregory, the man who is beloved by millions. James was one of the most successful nightclub and theater comedians in America and it started out a long way from the stage, in the tiny farming community of Lithonia, Georgia. Before he became “The Funniest Man in America,” James was a successful salesman of everything from encyclopedias to log homes. His philosophy: take care of yourself so nobody has to take care of you. When he started over as a comedian, this commitment to hard work and honest dealing would be the key to his “business” of comedy. James loves working people—because that's what he is, too. Whether it's entertaining our troops in the Persian Gulf after 9/11, working the road with greats like Steven Wright and Jay Leno, or facing a heart-stopping emergency that sent him into a coma, James has squeezed a dozen lifetimes into a half-century of comedy. This book is the best James Gregory story yet—as only he can tell it. “A Bushel of Beans and a Peck of Tomatoes.” get this the book. If you love James Gregory, you'll love him even more after reading his life story.

Break 1: TOM WAGES STORY 1: Gwinnett Police Looking For Missing Teen Last Seen Leaving School Three Weeks Ago The Gwinnett County Police Department is actively searching for Eva Virginia Cambron, a 15-year-old student from Lilburn, who has been missing for three weeks. She was last seen departing from McClure Science High School and was spotted running down Club Drive in the direction of Shackleford Road. Cambron's disappearance was reported through the Gwinnett County Public Schools Police Department. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a grey hoodie, dark pants, and light-colored shoes. She stands 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighs approximately 115 pounds, and has long, dark hair and brown eyes. Authorities are urging anyone with information on Cambron's whereabouts to come forward. You can contact the Gwinnett County Police or provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta. STORY 2: Georgia House Bill Would Add Demographic Diversity To Invest Georgia Fund Selection Criteria State Representative Darshun Kendrick, representing Lithonia, is championing House Bill 1138 with the goal of broadening the demographic reach of the Invest Georgia Fund. The fund operates as a "fund of funds", directing state resources into venture capital firms which subsequently invest in local businesses. The proposed legislation by Kendrick introduces a new criterion to the fund's objectives - promoting investment diversity that mirrors Georgia's demographic diversity. The objective behind this initiative is to stimulate economic growth and generate job opportunities for a wider range of Georgians. Presently, the bill is being deliberated by the Georgia House Economic Development and Tourism Committee. STORY 3: Gwinnett Lawmaker Files Freedom to Drive Bill In a move geared towards inclusivity and public safety, State Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes, representing Duluth, has tabled Senate Bill 478, also known as the Freedom To Drive Act. This legislation aims to extend driver's license access to non-U.S. citizens in Georgia. The bill proposes the provision of government-issued identification and driving authorization cards to immigrants, independent of their immigration status. The objective is to legally enable immigrants to drive, thereby enhancing public safety and fostering a more inclusive environment. This measure also seeks to allow them to contribute more effectively to Georgia's economy and societal fabric. Currently under review by the Senate's Public Safety Committee, the bill suggests an eight-year valid license for noncitizens and ensures non-discrimination during the application process. A variety of documents, including school IDs, employment IDs, and immigration-related papers like DACA approval letters, are deemed acceptable for this purpose. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back. Break 2: INGLES 6 STORY 4: Georgia Power objections cast long shadow over state lawmakers' efforts to expand solar energy In Georgia, there is a growing call for the expansion of community solar initiatives, which proponents argue could lower overall energy costs and broaden access to clean energy. However, these proposals face opposition from Georgia Power, the state's largest electric utility. The legislative measures under consideration would permit developers to construct small solar arrays within Georgia Power's jurisdiction. This would allow customers to subscribe to a share of the electricity produced by these arrays and subsequently receive credits on their utility bills. Advocates insist that this initiative would particularly benefit renters and homeowners with roof areas unsuitable for solar panels due to shading. Georgia Power counters this argument by suggesting that such a program could result in cost shifting to other consumers and potentially lead to confusion among ratepayers. Despite these concerns, supporters stress the urgency of expanding clean energy options in light of escalating energy costs and an anticipated energy deficit. For these bills to progress, they need to pass at least one legislative chamber by the deadline on February 29. STORY 5: Partnership Gwinnett Recognizes Local Companies For Creating New Jobs In a significant boost to the local economy, eight firms in Gwinnett County collectively generated over 1,500 new jobs and made an investment close to $486 million last year, according to Partnership Gwinnett. The companies, which include Leuze Electronic Inc., NEMA Inc., and Northeast Georgia Health System, were recognized for their contributions at the Gwinnett Company Reception. This event is dedicated to honoring businesses that have chosen to expand within Gwinnett or select it as the location for their new establishments. Deven Cason of Partnership Gwinnett highlighted how these companies are vital contributors to Gwinnett County's economic growth and community development. In addition to acknowledging corporate contributions, Partnership Gwinnett also uses this occasion to recognize the efforts of nonprofit partners such as the American Cancer Society and Junior Achievement. Looking ahead, Partnership Gwinnett is preparing to host the Movers and Makers Awards in May, an event designed to celebrate the manufacturing and logistics industry within Gwinnett. STORY 6: Hooper-Renwick Speaker Series To Feature Author Victoria Christoper Murray on Feb. 22 The Hooper-Renwick School, nestled in Lawrenceville and recognized as the only Black public high school in Gwinnett County prior to its consolidation with the Gwinnett County School System, is set to be transformed into a spacious 25,000-square-foot library. The project, which is financed by the Hooper-Renwick Memorial Programming Fund & Endowment with significant backing from Peach State Credit Union, seeks to uphold and celebrate the school's rich history. In addition to this transformative project, a speaker series has been organized to honor the experiences and stories of Hooper-Renwick attendees. This series will kick off on February 22 at the Lawrenceville Arts Center with Victoria Christoper Murray, a celebrated author known for her New York Times bestselling works. The event will feature insightful discussions led by Murray and fellow author ReShonda Tate, as well as Hooper-Renwick alumni Joyce Moore and Dr. John Maxey. STORY 7: Georgia House votes to expand paid parental leave for state workers In a significant move, the Georgia House of Representatives has decisively passed House Bill 1010, a measure designed to enhance paid parental leave for state workers. Under the terms of the bill, the allocation of paid leave would be increased from the current 120 hours to 240 hours, equivalent to six weeks. This provision would be applicable following the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. With a vote of 153-11, the bill received substantial backing. Speaker Jon Burns underscored the crucial role such legislation plays in supporting working families. Meanwhile, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones stressed the importance of this expanded benefit in attracting and retaining employees. Following this approval by the House, the bill will now proceed to the state Senate for further deliberation. We'll have final thoughts after this. Episode 134 Jesse Dempsey41 Year old father of three, Jesse Dempsey was shot to death around 11pm as he drove about 70MPH along I-20 near Lithonia, in DeKalb County Georgia on October 25th, 2020. Jesse was in the passenger seat driving his girlfriend Kendra Vickery's White GMC Sierra Pickup when a single bullet blew out the back window, passed through the driver's headrest, and struck Jesse in the head. Kendra, who was in the passenger seat next to Jesse, initially thought that a tire had blown out. Jesse slammed on the brakes and came to a stop in the middle lane, and the truck was struck from behind by another driver, 39-year-old Marie Fleuristin. Kendra's truck wound up on the shoulder of the road, and Kendra called 911 as she tried to get out of the vehicle. Tragically, Marie Fleuristin, the driver of the vehicle that slammed into Kendra's truck, exited her vehicle and was struck and killed by a semi truck. Jesse was barely alive and was rushed to the hospital, while Kendra was taken to the police station where police questioned her for hours before finally telling her that Jesse had died earlier that night from his injuries. Kendra felt like a suspect which was surprising to her since the evidence clearly pointed to a shooter outside of the truck firing the shot that killed Jesse. Following Jesse's death, his family was left to wonder, was Jesse targeted by someone intending to kill him, or was he the victim of a random sniper. It turns out that Jesse was mixed up with some shady people, but it also came to light that other vehicles in that same stretch of highway have been shot at, Today, Jesse's case remains unsolved. In this episode, his girlfriend Kendra recounts the events of that tragic night, and shares her thoughts about the case.If you have any information about this case, or any of the shootings along I-20, please call DeKalb County Homicide detectives at 770-724-7856To support this podcast with a donation, you can do so via Patreon at:https://www.patreon.com/TheMurderInMyFamilyor through Paypal at:https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/AbJackEntertainmentTo contact the podcast or learn more about the case we discuss, please visit:TheMurderInMyFamily.comFollow us on social media;Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/pg/The-Murder-in-My-Family-True-Crime-Podcast-998674943627334/reviews/Twitter-@MurderinMyFamThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4119331/advertisement

Today Wednesday April 12th , and happy 90th birthday to the late, great Godfather of Soul James Brown ***Audio Get Up*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnet sees a record 9 players taken in NFL Draft The Forum at Peachtree Corners kicks off construction for redevelopment efforts And Gwinnett is a finalist for title of nation's top parks and recreation department Plus, Lia McGrath of Ingles Markets joins us to talk about “the dirty dozen” We'll have all this and more on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Commercial Story 1. Draft This year's NFL Draft saw a record high of nine draft picks from Gwinnett County, Georgia, producing more draft picks than 42 other states. Gwinnett contributed to the largest share of Georgia's 23 draft picks. If Gwinnett were its own state, it would tie for eighth nationally in NFL Draft picks. Grayson and Peachtree Ridge were among the 14 high schools with multiple players drafted in 2023. Multiple draft picks from the same high school are impressive, but it is not uncommon for Gwinnett. Archer had two players drafted by NFL teams in 2020. STORY 2: Forum North American Properties broke ground on a redevelopment project to revitalize The Forum Peachtree Corners, a once-thriving shopping destination located across Peachtree Parkway from the Peachtree Corners Town Center. The Forum, which is more than 20 years old, had begun to decline in recent years, so North American's plans are as much of a revitalization effort as it is a redevelopment project. The project will transform The Forum into a mixed-use community with residential, retail and dining uses, as well as a hotel. The redevelopment efforts are expected to bring aspects of Avalon to The Forum, and the company will build a plaza where concerts, yoga classes, and other social gatherings will be held. Story 3: Parks and Rec Gwinnett County Parks Department in Georgia is one of four finalists for the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and National Recreation and Park Association's Gold Medal in the Class I category, which includes parks departments that serve more than 400,000 residents. The Gold Medal is the highest award a parks department can receive from the association and the academy. Gwinnett County has been named a Gold Medal finalist five times and won the award once. The Gold Medals for each class and category will be presented during a reception at the annual National Recreation and Park Association conference in Dallas, Texas in October. STORY 4:Mistrial A mistrial has been declared for most of the charges against Austin Ford, a Lithonia resident accused of killing an 18-year-old woman and leaving her body in Yellow River Park, after the jury could not reach a decision on five charges, including felony murder. Ford was found guilty on three of the eight felony charges against him, including concealing the death of another and two counts of theft by taking. The Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office will consult with the victim's family before deciding whether to seek a new trial. Commercial Commercial Commercial OBITUARY ***Audio Tom Wages Obituary 041223*** Story 5: Georgians starting to get tax refund checks Georgia taxpayers are receiving state income tax refunds for the second year in a row, thanks to the state's revenue surplus of more than $6 billion. Under House Bill 162, single filers and married taxpayers who file separately are eligible to receive refunds of up to $250, head of household filers can receive a maximum of $375, and married taxpayers filing jointly can receive up to $500. Taxpayers who were claimed as a dependent and had a tax liability in 2021 are also eligible. The revenue department expects to issue all refunds for those who filed by the April 18 deadline this year within the next eight weeks. Story 6: Romanian man sentenced A Romanian man living in Lawrenceville, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison, followed by one year of supervised release, for attempted car burglaries in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Mihail Ilie was found guilty of violating the federal Assimilative Crimes Act, which means he violated a state law on federal land. Ilie used a special tool to pick car door locks and stole credit or debit cards left in the vehicle, which were used at area malls for high-dollar purchases. The burglar entered from the passenger side, which made it difficult for hikers to recognize that their cars had been broken into. And now, Lia McGrath from Ingles Markets joins the show to talk about the “dirty dozen”. ***Audio Ingles Market Wellness-The Dirty Dozen*** Commercial Commercial Commercial Thanks again for listening to today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Governor Brian Kemp picked a Duluth-based attorney to fill the newly created seventh Gwinnett County State Court Judge seat, starting in January. Kemp's office announced on Friday night that the governor has appointed Jaletta Long Smith to fill the seat, which was created by the Georgia General Assembly earlier this year. Smith is a Gwinnett native and a litigation associate at Andersen, Tate and Carr PC in Duluth. Smith's focus area at Andersen, Tate and Carr has been on civil litigation and appellate matters, according to the governor's office. She earned her bachelor's degree in communication studies and Spanish from Clemson University and her law degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's William H. Bowen School of Law. Brown and former Georgia Supreme Court Justice Britt C. Grant. She handled civil and criminal appeals for Brown and Grant and federal civil and criminal trial matters for Baker. Smith was a Bowen Scholar, which is a full academic scholarship, at Arkansas-Little Rock and graduated in 2010 with high honors and among the top three students in her class. The Atlanta Regional Commission awarded funding for seven transportation-related projects in Gwinnett County, including a Satellite Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit line, on Wednesday. The projects are part of a list of 77 metro Atlanta transportation projects that will split $235 million in federal transportation funding that the ARC is tasked with distributing. The funding is part of the Transportation Improvement Program, also known as TIP. The proposed BRT line on Satellite Boulevard is one of the biggest projects from Gwinnett, and it is set to receive $6.4 million in federal funding through the ARC. It is expected to run from the OFS property off Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross to the Sugarloaf Mills Park and Ride lot in Lawrenceville. The federal funding will be used to begin environmental and design work on the proposed BRT line. Gwinnett officials have been looking at how to improve mobility adjacent to the Interstate 85 corridor. BRT, which is a setup where buses act somewhat similar to trains in that they travel in dedicated lanes, is one of the options that has been discussed in recent years. The county is putting up $1.6 million as a local matching share on the federal dollars, meaning a total of $8 million will be used to kick off the environmental and design work. But, BRT is not the only big project in Gwinnett that is expected to get funding. There is $6 million in federal funding going to the Georgia Department of Transportation for the widening of Scenic Highway, also known as State Route 124, between U.S. Highway 78 in Snellville and Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. State and county officials have been planning to add an additional lane in each direction for years. For a list of the other projects receiving funds, please visit Gwinnett Daily Post dot Com. Duluth senior Sean Kimani will play his college football in the Ivy League, committing Sunday to Columbia University. Kimani, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman, was a first-team all-county selection this season by the Touchdown Club of Gwinnett. He also has a 4.0 GPA. He joins a Lions program that finished 2022 with a 6-4 record, going 3-4 against Ivy League competition. The backdrop for Lions home games is different than what you might see on most college campuses, as Columbia plays its home games in Manhattan, at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. Columbia's 2023 football season kicks off on September 16th at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. Ivy League teams traditionally begin their football seasons a few weeks later than other colleges to help accommodate players doing summer internships across the county and world. Shiloh Elementary School is getting a new principal — who parents, students and teachers are already familiar with — while Gwinnett County Public Schools will see new faces in two positions, including a new chief financial officer and executive director of leadership development. Jennifer Mercedes, who has been an assistant principal at Shiloh Elementary School since 2018, will become the school's new principal. Meanwhile, Masana L. Mailliard has been hired as Gwinnett County Public Schools' new chief financial officer and Chandra Walker will become the district's new executive director of leadership development. In addition to being Shiloh's assistant principal for the new four years, Mercedes has held positions at two other schools in the district, according to a background provided by GCPS. Mailliard is coming to GCPS from the DeKalb County School District, where she has been the deputy chief financial officer since 2020. And, Walker has been a GCPS employee since 2003, and has served as the district's director of leadership development since 2013. A fire that officials said was caused by an electrical issue destroyed a Loganville home Friday night. Just before 6 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at the 800 block of Creek Cove Way South East. A neighbor called 911 to report the house fire and believed that the homeowner was absent. When fire crews arrived they found heavy fire blowing through the roof. Once the fire was knocked down searches were completed that confirmed the house was vacant during the fire, McGiboney said. The scene was brought under control by 7:20 p.m. Twenty-nine firefighters responded to the incident. A Dacula man has been arrested and charged in the murder of a Gwinnett County senior corrections officer who was killed in the parking lot of the county's corrections facility earlier this week. The Gwinnett County Police Department's SWAT Team arrested Yahya Abdulkadir, in Lithonia on Friday afternoon. He faces felony murder and aggravated assault charges in the death of Scott Riner, who was killed on Tuesday morning. The Gwinnett Police Homicide Unit has been working this case around the clock since early Tuesday when the incident occurred. The SWAT Team was backed up by Gwinnett Sheriff's deputies, U.S. Marshals, ATF agents and officials from the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office as they made the arrest. The suspect was arrested without incident. #GwinnettDailyPost #Georgia #LocalNews -- - - The Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast is local news for Lawrenceville, Norcross, Duluth, and all of Gwinnett County. Commercial Story 1:Shooting Gwinnett County Police are investigating an altercation between two men that resulted in one of them dying from a gunshot wound. Loganville resident Daniel Covington, 31, was shot on the 11 block of Rose Terrace Circle in Loganville on Saturday. Although no charges have been filed in Covington's death, police said Lithonia resident Kendell Evans, 23, did confess to officers that he shot Covington. Kendell was still at the scene when officers arrived and claimed it was in self defense. The investigation remains open at this time. Daniel died at a hospital that first responders took him to so he could be treated for his injuries. Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call detectives or Crime Stoppers . STORY 2:Police The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office is asking county leaders to create additional deputy and civilian employee positions for the office in 2023. Chief Deputy Cleo Atwater told the county's budget Citizens Review Team that the office would like to add 18 new sworn personnel and 13 civilian support personnel positions through the county's 2023 budget. The sworn personnel positions include two deputies for the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center Security Section, two more deputies for the Mental Health Section, four deputies for the civil process section, two deputies for the training section, six deputies for the special investigations section and two deputies for the professional standards section. In some cases, such as the additional deputies for the GJAC Security Section, the request is in response to a change that was made outside of the Sheriff's Office. The two GJAC security positions, for example, are being requested because of the addition of a 7th Gwinnett County State Court judge who will begin work in January. Meanwhile, the additional deputies for the Mental Health Section are being requested to comply with Georgia's new mental health reforms that the General Assembly passed into law earlier this year. Other positions, such as the four deputies for the Civil Process Section, are being requested because of an increase of workload for the Sheriff's Office. STORY 3:Rainbow Rainbow Village is preparing for its biggest fundraiser of the year — the “We Are Family Gala” slated for October 1st at the Atlanta Athletic Club. The Duluth-based nonprofit with the motto “ending homelessness one family at a time” will host a black-tie optional gala that includes a champagne reception, seated dinner with complimentary wine, silent and live auctions, the famed wine wall and a raffle to win a week for four at a private villa in Tuscany, Italy. Guests will also have an opportunity to hear an emotional account from a Rainbow Village graduate, detailing the impact the organization had on her life and the lives of her children. Both ticketed and non-ticketed sponsorships for the event are currently open. In addition to sponsorships, companies and organizations can purchase a table for 10 at the event for $1750. Individual tickets are available for $175 each. Raffle tickets — deemed the “Golden Ticket” — are available for $100. All sponsorships and tickets can be purchased online at Rainbow Village dot Org. STORY 4:Gwinnett Community Gwinnett County Community Services officials are asking for the creation of 18 full-time employees, four part-time employees and six vehicles for animal control, parks and recreation and University of Georgia Gwinnett Extension Office. They are also talking about working with UGA and Gwinnett County Public Schools to expand the 4H program into more schools in the county. In all, the Community Services Department is making $1.43 in requests for additional funding in the county's 2023 budget, for a total proposed department budget of $86.87 million. The additional funding requests were presented to a budget Citizens Review Team on Tuesday. the requests for funding are centered in three areas in particular. The breakdown of those requests for the 2023 county budget is: ♦ Five full-time staff and four vehicles for Animal Welfare and Enforcement, ♦ 11 full-time staff and one vehicle for Parks and Recreation. ♦ Two full-time staff, four part-time staff and one vehicle for UGA Gwinnett Extension Office. The expansion of the UGA Gwinnett Extension Office would help with the planned expansion of the 4H program in Gwinnett schools since the extension office oversees that program. Currently, some schools have 4H programs while others do not. Commercial Commercial Commercial BONUS: Sports And now community reporter Matt Goldin and GDP sports editor Will Hammock sit down to talk about sports around the county. Story 5:Emergency Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure praised the county's Office of Emergency Management on Wednesday, calling it one of the best in the state. But he added there are challenges that the office faces. The office is housed within the police department and coordinates response efforts in disasters and severe weather events, such as snow and ice storms or floods. Chied McClure pointed out during a budget presentation, however, that the office trails Georgia's other most populous counties in terms of how many emergency management employees it has. Given how far behind Gwinnett is behind the other most populous counties in Georgia — Gwinnett is the state's second most populous county, behind only Fulton County — a key part of the Gwinnett County Police Department's requests for additional funding in the county's 2023 budget focused on adding positions in the Office of Emergency Management. The positions include a deputy emergency management director at a cost of $171,542 and two emergency management specialists at a cost of $177,538. Money for those positions would come from the county's General Fund budget. The deputy director position would enable the police department to prepare succession plans for whenever the office's director retires. The additional emergency management specialist positions are designed to help expand the office's staff. McClure said the office currently has five people on its staff and the additional specialists would take that number up to seven. Story 6: Bank First American Bank and Trust announced the hiring of a new senior vice resident and commercial lender for its branch in Lawrenceville. Mike Ballenger, who has nearly 20 years of experience as a commercial and residential construction lender in Gwinnett County, will hold fill the senior vice president and lender position at the Lawrenceville branch. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Georgia who served as a finance manager for an Atlanta-area hotel management company before he made the move to banking. He has experience primarily in commercial real estate, residential construction, equipment financing and SBA 504. Mike is no stranger to the Gwinnett community. He is a resident of Buford who has served on Rainbow Village's board of directors and the city of Duluth Board of Ethics. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Duluth and his family attends Gwinnett Church in Sugar Hill. And now. Mental health issues can effect anyone.
