A conversation with Fr. The ethos Steinhardt recommends to Christians is that of an aristocrat minus the stiff upper lip and aloofness, a style molded by kindness, calm, good manners, respect for the dignity of others, and thus for one's own dignity. Christ Himself, he emphasizes, always possessed ‘knightly' traits: He is discreet, respectful; He knocks on the door and waits, never discouraged by a refusal; He is not suspicious but trusts, not greedy but gives abundantly; He forgives easily and completely; He is attentive and polite (‘Friend,' He says to Judas, whose betrayal He knows well). In Him, there is no moralism or legalism, but rather the ability to discern in every person, beyond sin, the person that God calls and enables to love. Beyond totalitarianism, which is the fascination with power and death, and beyond market society, which holds up profit as its only god … If the journal of this resistance opens up for the future, it does so precisely because it is a Journal of Joy. About the Author: Nicu Steinhardt, known in his later monastic years as Father Nicolae de la Rohia, was born in 1912 near Bucharest to Jewish parents. A refined scholar who had established himself as one of the most erudite voices of his generation, he was imprisoned by the repressive communist regime in 1960. Steinhardt asked to be baptized in his cell—“illicitly”—and eventually found profound joy amid the suffering and despair of the prison. After an extraordinary experience of Christ, the intense happiness accompanying him perpetually transfigured the cruel and gloomy surroundings into a luminous world permeated by God's love and grace—which is why writing the Journal in the early 1970s was essential, even in the knowledge it would be banned by the communists. Nicolae Steinhardt, then a monk at Rohia, passed away in March 1989, nine months before the 1989 December Revolution toppled the communist dictatorship. Learn more about your ad choices.

Y, recuerda, Bill Shankly no tenía razón.

In this episode of 'Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski,' psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins the host to dissect the distressing case of Nicolae Miu, the man convicted of first-degree reckless homicide following a violent incident at the Apple River in Wisconsin. Caught on a viral video, Miu claimed he stabbed several young adults in self-defense after being mobbed and attacked. The jury, however, disagreed with his self-defense claim, opting for a conviction that highlighted the chaos and horror of the altercation. Shavaun and Tony delve into the mob mentality fueled by alcohol and aggression, particularly noting the performative and contagious nature of violence among groups of young adults. They discuss how such situations spiral out of control, with individual moral compasses seemingly overridden by group dynamics. The conversation provides a grim reflection on how societal norms can quickly erode under certain conditions, leading to tragic outcomes. Main Points from the Conversation Mob Mentality and Violence: Discussion on how Nicolae Miu was overwhelmed by a mob of intoxicated youths, leading to his violent reaction. Fight or Flight Response: Analysis of Miu's psychological state during the attack, emphasizing the fight or flight response and loss of rational thought. Jury's Verdict: Exploration of why the jury rejected the self-defense claim, viewing the stabbings as reckless rather than justifiable. Group Dynamics: Examination of the role of alcohol and testosterone in escalating group aggression. Social Contagion: Insights into how aggression can spread and intensify among groups, creating a dangerous escalation of violence. Psychological Impact of Group Behavior: Discussion on the psychological changes that occur in individuals when they are part of a group, often leading to actions they would not consider as individuals. #NicolaeMiu #TonyBrueski #HiddenKillersPodcast #ShavaunScott #MobMentality #SelfDefense #GroupDynamics Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Following a tense and emotional trial, Nicolae Miu, 54, has been convicted of first-degree reckless homicide for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Isaac Schuman at the Apple River in western Wisconsin in 2022. The verdict, delivered by a St. Croix County jury, marks a significant development in a case that has gripped the community since the tragic confrontation unfolded. The jury, consisting of six men and six women, also found Miu guilty on four counts of recklessly endangering safety for his actions against four other individuals involved in the altercation, as well as one count of battery. Miu had argued that he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors pursued higher charges, including first-degree intentional homicide. Defense attorney Aaron Nelson expressed surprise and "respectful disappointment" at the verdict, highlighting the subjective nature of self-defense claims. Nelson remarked, "In many ways, self-defense is a community standard. And it's very dependent upon which group of 12 people within the community you ask." The trial featured emotional testimony and evidence, with key moments punctuated by prosecutor Karl Anderson's assertions that Miu "snapped" and stabbed Schuman out of anger. Conversely, defense attorney Corey Chirafisi argued that Miu felt frightened, trapped, and vulnerable following significant health challenges, including a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery in 2020. Critical to the trial was video evidence capturing the confrontation, which jurors reviewed extensively. The footage, beginning with Miu's interaction with Madison Coen, depicted the escalation of tensions leading to the violent altercation. Miu appeared visibly distressed as the video showcased the moments of the confrontation, which resulted in tragic consequences. Schuman, a resident of Stillwater, was fatally stabbed during the altercation, which also left Alexander Martin, Dante Carlson, Anthony Carlson, Rhyley Mattison, and Madison Coen injured. The jury's deliberations, which began Wednesday afternoon, concluded Thursday morning with the delivery of the verdict. The conviction of Nicolae Miu brings a measure of closure to a community still reeling from the senseless violence that unfolded at the Apple River. As legal proceedings progress, the impact of this tragic incident continues to resonate, serving as a reminder of the importance of accountability and justice in the face of such profound loss.
