RIP the genre and all hail the hyper-real individual as institution, the self-fulfilling prophecies of [EDIT: Guy Debord's] society of the spectacle [and Baudrillard's simulation], the revenge of religion as our accelerating techno-social evolution prompts a kind of reversal as the movement of the Tao that challenges the dreams and ideals of the Enlightenment…it is a time of monsters, a rapid recombination of worlds and ways of living in them. Riffing philosophically on network society and its discontents, the emergent spiritual traditions of digital natives, and the posthuman bestiary of our AI- and biotech-saturated century, Rina's Substack is a handbook to the cyborg aesthetic, the imagistic/algorithmic complex of online identity, our entanglement with capital and the possession by and performance of meme-space.How do we not become caricatures of ourselves in the world-creating and -destroying flood of remix culture? How do we cultivate roughness, fractality, wildness, illegigility?

Since 2017, EA Funds has been providing grants across four distinct cause areas. While there are payout reports available, there is a lack of reports detailing the outcomes of these grants, so I delved out of curiosity into the Grants Database to review some of the proposals that received funding and evaluate their outcomes. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Review of Past Grants: The $100,000 Grant for a Video Game?, published by Nicolae on June 3, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Since 2017, EA Funds has been providing grants across four distinct cause areas. While there are payout reports available, there is a lack of reports detailing the outcomes of these grants, so I delved out of curiosity into the Grants Database to review some of the proposals that received funding and evaluate their outcomes. Some of the findings were quite unexpected, particularly for the Long-Term Future Fund and the EA Infrastructure Fund. The case involving a $100,000 grant for a video game In July 2022, EA approved a $100,000 grant to Lone Pine Games, LLC, for developing and marketing a video game designed to explain the Stop Button Problem to the public and STEM professionals. Outcomes from looking into Lone Pine Games, LLC: 1. After almost two years, there are no online mentions of such a game being developed by this company, except for the note on the EA Funds page. 2. Lone Pine Games released only one game available on multiple gaming platforms back in 2020 called NewCity, a city-building simulator, similar to SimCity from the 1990s. 3. After a few updates, the development of NewCity was abandoned last year, and its source code was made public on GitHub. Video trailer for the game NewCity, which was highly likely the primary track record in the grant proposal for the development of the Stop Button Problem video game. Despite the absence of any concrete results from this grant, let's entertain the idea that the Stop Button Problem game was produced and that it was decent. Would such a game "positively influence the long-term trajectory of civilization," as described by the Long-Term Future Fund? For context, Rob Miles's videos (1) and (2) from 2017 on the Stop Button Problem already provided clear explanations for the general public. It seems insane to even compare, but was this expenditure of $100,000 really justified when these funds could have been used to save 20-30 children's lives or provide cataract surgery to around 4000 people? With a grant like this one, Steven Pinker's remarks on longtermism funding seem increasingly accurate. Training guide dogs for the visually impaired, often highlighted in EA discussions, stands out as a highly effective donation strategy by contrast. I selected this example because it involves a company rather than individual recipients. However, I found numerous other cases, many even worse, primarily involving digital creators with barely any content produced during their funding period, people needing big financial support to change careers, and independent researchers whose proposals had not, at the time of writing, resulted in any published papers. As Yann LeCun recently said, "If you do research and don't publish, it's not science." These grants are not just a few thousand dollars distributed here and there; in many instances, they amount to tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. While many people, myself included, strongly support funding people's passion projects, because some of these grants really look that way, this approach seems more akin to Patreon or Kickstarter and not to effective giving. I believe many donors, who think they are contributing effectively, may not be fully aware of how their money is being utilized. Donors contribute to these funds expecting rigorous analysis comparable to GiveWell's standards, even for more speculative areas that rely on hypotheticals, hoping their money is not wasted, so they entrust that responsibility to EA fund managers, whom they assume make better and more informed decisions with their contributions. In this episode of 'Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski,' psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins the host to dissect the distressing case of Nicolae Miu, the man convicted of first-degree reckless homicide following a violent incident at the Apple River in Wisconsin. Caught on a viral video, Miu claimed he stabbed several young adults in self-defense after being mobbed and attacked. The jury, however, disagreed with his self-defense claim, opting for a conviction that highlighted the chaos and horror of the altercation. Shavaun and Tony delve into the mob mentality fueled by alcohol and aggression, particularly noting the performative and contagious nature of violence among groups of young adults. The conversation provides a grim reflection on how societal norms can quickly erode under certain conditions, leading to tragic outcomes. Main Points from the Conversation Mob Mentality and Violence: Discussion on how Nicolae Miu was overwhelmed by a mob of intoxicated youths, leading to his violent reaction. Fight or Flight Response: Analysis of Miu's psychological state during the attack, emphasizing the fight or flight response and loss of rational thought. Social Contagion: Insights into how aggression can spread and intensify among groups, creating a dangerous escalation of violence. Following a tense and emotional trial, Nicolae Miu, 54, has been convicted of first-degree reckless homicide for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Isaac Schuman at the Apple River in western Wisconsin in 2022. The verdict, delivered by a St. Croix County jury, marks a significant development in a case that has gripped the community since the tragic confrontation unfolded. The jury, consisting of six men and six women, also found Miu guilty on four counts of recklessly endangering safety for his actions against four other individuals involved in the altercation, as well as one count of battery. Miu had argued that he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors pursued higher charges, including first-degree intentional homicide. Defense attorney Aaron Nelson expressed surprise and "respectful disappointment" at the verdict, highlighting the subjective nature of self-defense claims. Nelson remarked, "In many ways, self-defense is a community standard. And it's very dependent upon which group of 12 people within the community you ask." The trial featured emotional testimony and evidence, with key moments punctuated by prosecutor Karl Anderson's assertions that Miu "snapped" and stabbed Schuman out of anger. Conversely, defense attorney Corey Chirafisi argued that Miu felt frightened, trapped, and vulnerable following significant health challenges, including a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery in 2020. Critical to the trial was video evidence capturing the confrontation, which jurors reviewed extensively. The footage, beginning with Miu's interaction with Madison Coen, depicted the escalation of tensions leading to the violent altercation. Miu appeared visibly distressed as the video showcased the moments of the confrontation, which resulted in tragic consequences. Schuman, a resident of Stillwater, was fatally stabbed during the altercation, which also left Alexander Martin, Dante Carlson, Anthony Carlson, Rhyley Mattison, and Madison Coen injured. The jury's deliberations, which began Wednesday afternoon, concluded Thursday morning with the delivery of the verdict. The conviction of Nicolae Miu brings a measure of closure to a community still reeling from the senseless violence that unfolded at the Apple River. As legal proceedings progress, the impact of this tragic incident continues to resonate, serving as a reminder of the importance of accountability and justice in the face of such profound loss.
