California launched Project Homekey after the pandemic to quickly create new housing and get homeless people off the streets. Over the last few years the state has spent $3.8 billion converting existing properties such as old hotels and apartment buildings into housing that could be built fast and at a lower cost than ground-up construction. But the program has had mixed results according to a CalMatters investigation that found that about half of the development projects in the program either came in late, went over budget or were never built. We'll talk about how well Project Homekey is working, and what we can learn from its successes and failures. Yet here's the stunning truth—God doesn't abandon us in our unholiness. From Eden to Egypt, the Old Testament tells one consistent story: God rescuing His children from one bad decision after another. He promised Abraham, freed Israel from slavery, and gave them a place to meet with Him—not because they earned it, but because He is faithful. Moses couldn't even look at God's face and live, yet God still said, "My presence will go with you."Here's what changes everything: We don't need the benefits of Egypt. We need Eden. We don't just need God's blessings—we need God Himself. The tabernacle, the temple, the sacrifices—they all pointed to one truth: there must be a way for unholy people to be with a holy God.Want to know how that's possible? Our final episode of this Courage My Friends season features a December 10th Human Rights Day Panel Discussion, the first of a series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Community Worker Program at Toronto's George Brown College. Community workers and human rights advocates, Brianna Olson Pitawanakwat, Samira Mohyeddin, Diana Gallego, Desmond Cole and Diana Chan McNally discuss the meaning of human rights in Canada 77 years after the UN adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, critical issues facing us today and the power of solidarity-driven, rights-based organizing. Speaking to Canada's approach to human rights, Pitawanakwat says: "A big wakeup call was a couple of days ago when the UN passed the International Day Against Colonialism and Canada abstained. Because Canada is very much still rooted in this colonial mechanism and ideology here … In Anishinaabe culture, we don't rely on the idea of rights, rights are a European construct. We rely on the idea of responsibility … If we relied on human rights, we would be in a dismal place, which is where we are today." According to Chan McNally: "Every time you see an encampment that is someone exercising their right to housing by literally making their own tent.We have downloaded the responsibility directly on homeless people to ensure their own rights. And criminalizing even that action of survival ... It's ludicrous, ludicrous to me." Speaking to the importance of community work, Cole says: "People are doing it in this school and in this program. The reason that I always say yes, when you ask me to come here … I was homeless myself more than 20 years ago when I moved to this city. Somebody who took a community worker program referred me to a youth shelter and changed my life. For real." On the role of independent journalism, Mohyeddin reflects on her upcoming documentary about the pro-Palestine student encampment at UofT: "Our corporate media was vilifying these young people. And you know, my motto for journalism has always been to 'Make mad the guilty and appall the free.' And I think that if we operate from that place, even as citizens, we can really make a change." On the power of solidarity, Gallego says: "The system want us being isolated. Solidarity is a word they trying to penalize … Solidarity is going and bringing the power that the Indigenous community have with the Palestinian movement. Bringing the solidarity of the unions back to us, back to the people.Being a community worker … Being the first face that a refugee is seeing in Canada and seeing the welcoming and seeing the support, means a lot." Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick has raised concerns with the Government's proposed solutions for rough sleepers - and says they won't solve the actual problem at hand. While details are scarce, reports show the Government and Auckland Council are working on moving homeless people out of public spaces in the CBD for destructive behaviour. Chlöe Swarbrick says it's time to get to the core root issues and invest in sensible solutions. "Right now, it seems like, really, the only place these people can end up being put is being held overnight in the cells. Again, that doesn't go anywhere near towards resolving the problem." An online reaction to our series in the Winnipeg Sun on homeless encampment mayhem and failed government policies has raised an important question for Episode 54- are governments actually bringing homeless people into Winnipeg?Part 1- A recap of recent Sun columns and podcasts, and a reflection on the 15 years since our last broadcast on 92.9 KICK-FM.Part 2- A source with access to the Homeless Individuals and Families Information System (HIFIS) says that asylum/refugee claimants coming to Canada are "entitled to not only whatever benefits they may receive being refugees, but then all the benefits entitled to homeless as well." "Between October 2024 and April of this year we doubled our active case files from 5.5k to 11k... these people are entered and processed mostly by End Homelessness Winnipeg themselves or agencies that support new comers."Episode 54 will make you wonder- why haven't we heard from corporate broadcasters funded by the Liberal government about how homeless aboriginal and other Canadians are left waiting for assistance on riverbanks, while foreign nationals allowed into our country by the Liberal government cut in line ahead of them? We certainly never heard about it from the recently-departed homelessness czar of the NDP, Tessa Blaikie Whitecloud.*******On November 14th Marty Gold is going to compete in the biggest wrestling match in Canada - the CWE 50 Man Rumble To Remember!Presented by Canadian Wrestling's Elite, the event at the Ukrainian Labour Temple offers a great reward to the last man standing- a CWE Championship match at the February supercard.A limited number of discounted tickets are available for listeners of the podcast and for readers of our columns in the Sun – email martygoldlive@gmail.com for more details and see Marty in action!

President Trump is promising to sweep homeless people off America's streets. Critics say the policy raises big concerns about civil liberties and cost. As a part of President Trump's takeover of policing in the nation's capital, he has pledged to remove homeless people and encampments from the city. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said homeless people who don’t leave the city will face punishment in the form of fines and jail time. Cities across the country are struggling  with how to regulate homeless camping, including in the Pacific Northwest. We take this moment to listen back to several conversations we had with people living on the streets of Portland and Vancouver about how they think homelessness should be regulated.    Back in 2022, then Portland mayor Ted Wheeler pledged to create several huge sanctioned homeless camps at the edges of the city and threatened to send people who wouldn’t go to those camps to jail. OPB’s “Think Out Loud” spent a day on the streets of Portland asking people how they felt about the plan.   Earlier this winter, OPB’s “Think Out Loud” spent a morning with staff and volunteers of the Council for Homeless as they participated in the Point-in-Time count in Vancouver, Washington.  The Point-in-Time count is a federally required snapshot of how many people are experiencing homelessness in a given area.

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” - Proverbs 19:17As Christians, we're called to be generous, but what does that look like when someone asks for money on the street? Should we give? Is there a better way to help? Today, Dr. David W. Jones joins us to explore the ethics of giving to homeless people and how to show compassion without causing harm.Dr. David W. Jones is Senior Professor of Christian Ethics at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Christian Financial Ethics and is the author of Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians.A Biblical Call to Care for the PoorScripture is clear about God's concern for the poor and His expectation that we share that concern. Jesus said, “Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you” (Matthew 5:42). The apostle John echoed this, writing, “If anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?” (1 John 3:17).We should want to help those in need. The real question isn't whether we help, but how. Before we give, we should examine our hearts, because our initial reaction may often be judgmental, as we may assume that the person is lazy or addicted. But Dr. Jones calls this being “middle class in spirit”. Christ doesn't call us to be “middle class in spirit”—He calls us to be “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3).This shift in mindset is essential. Even if someone is unworthy of help, that's the very reason we should want to help them. What if God waited until we deserved His grace? Is It Wrong to Give Cash? That leads to the practical question: Should we give cash to someone on the street? While the act of providing cash isn't inherently wrong, it could enable harmful behavior.Instead, it may be more beneficial to prepare in advance by carrying granola bars or other non-perishable food items. Offer something that meets a need without enabling sin. If you have the time, offer to buy them a meal instead. This kind of planned generosity helps believers act as good stewards, offering love without ignoring potential consequences. But what if the person uses the money responsibly? Should we just leave that up to God?There's a balance because we can't know everything about someone's situation in a brief moment, but we are still called to be wise and loving. That means doing what we can with what we know, and entrusting the rest to the Lord. When a Handout Becomes a RelationshipSometimes, opportunities arise to do more than just meet an immediate need. Perhaps that involves building long-term relationships with individuals experiencing poverty or homelessness. These acts of sustained compassion often lead to deep transformation when we take the time to build a relationship with those who are struggling. This is an example of a development-based model of helping the poor, which contrasts with an aid-based model (like giving money or food on the spot). If a natural disaster causes poverty, aid is appropriate. However, if it's due to systemic injustice or poor choices, long-term involvement—such as discipleship, mentoring, and support—may be necessary.Overwhelmed by Need? Start With What's NearA common question is: Where do I even begin? The need is everywhere. The law of moral proximity encourages that we are most responsible for those closest to us. You may not be able to fix world hunger, but you can help someone in your neighborhood, church, or community.Big problems require big solutions, but God calls us to care for what's in front of us first. Our goal isn't just charity—it's Christlike love, expressed with wisdom. When we begin by checking our hearts, planning for wise giving, and staying open to deeper relationships, we reflect God's grace in practical ways.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I was affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision, but recently received a lump sum check related to that.
