Grief is something we all experience, yet most of us don't know how to talk about it, process it, or support others through it. In light of the recent LA wildfires and devastating tragedies, this conversation is more important than ever. Today, we're diving deep into grief, trauma, and healing with licensed grief and trauma therapist Gina Moffa, who has spent over 20 years helping individuals and families navigate loss. Gina is the author of the bestselling book Moving On Doesn't Mean Letting Go and a leading voice in grief literacy. In this episode, she breaks down why society is often “grief illiterate” and how we can shift the way we approach loss. We also explore how families can grieve together, how to help children process loss in an age-appropriate way, and what it truly means to heal. Gina shares invaluable insights on self-care during grief, why healing doesn't mean forgetting, and how to support loved ones without unintentionally causing harm. Whether you're navigating a personal loss, supporting someone through grief, or simply want to better understand how loss shapes us all, this episode will change the way you think about grief.  Mentioned in the Episode: Gina Moffa's Website Grief Coaching with Gina Moffa Moving On Doesn't Mean Letting Go: A Modern Guide to Navigating Loss by Gina Moffa On Death and Dying: What the Dying Have to Teach Doctors, Nurses, Clergy and Their Own Families by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross QuakeFeed You've Got Mail (movie) All Fours: A Novel by Miranda July  A Sony Music Entertainment production.  Find more great podcasts from Sony Music Entertainment at sonymusic.com/podcasts and follow us at @sonypodcasts  To bring your brand to life in this podcast, email podcastadsales@sonymusic.com  Learn more about your ad choices. How do you navigate grief in the workplace in an empathic and supportive way? We all experience loss, and we might default to assuming the only place for grief is in the home. The truth is that a loss permeates every aspect of our lives, sometimes for years or even decades, and it certainly crosses into the workplace. Krista St-Germain experienced a devastating loss in 2016 when her husband was killed by an impaired driver. That trauma propelled her into grief, then therapy, then research. Today, she is the founder of the Mom Goes On group coaching program and the host of the Widowed Mom podcast. She shares her hard-won wisdom on what we need to know about grief and how to navigate it in the workplace, both for ourselves and in support of others.Question your assumptions about grief and learn to better support yourself or others who are navigating it, including:How we've come to misunderstand the grieving process; The role time plays when we are healing from a loss; How to navigate interactions with grieving coworkers; The possibilities of life beyond grieving and post-traumatic growth.Related Links:Learn more about Krista's work - https://www.coachingwithkrista.com/Follow Krista on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/lifecoachkrista/Connect with Krista on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/coachingwithkristaThe Widowed Mom Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-widowed-mom-podcast/id1468127632The Grieving Brain by Mary-Frances O'Connor - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-grieving-brain-the-surprising-science-of-how-we-learn-from-love-and-loss-mary-frances-o-connor/16976128?ean=9780062946249Report from the Death Studies Journal on the Dual Process Model - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10848151/Brené Brown - Silver Linings Clip - https://brenebrown.com/videos/rsa-short-empathy/On Death & Dying: What the Dying Have to Teach Doctors, Nurses, Clergy & Their Own Families by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross - https://bookshop.org/p/books/on-death-dying-what-the-dying-have-to-teach-doctors-nurses-clergy-their-own-families-elisabeth-kubler-ross/9165298?ean=9781476775548On Grief & Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross - https://bookshop.org/p/books/on-grief-grieving-finding-the-meaning-of-grief-through-the-five-stages-of-loss-david-kessler/6699869?ean=9781476775555Episode 468: Disrupting Elder Care: We Need To Talk More About Working Daughters - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode468LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/Follow me on Instagram: www.instagram.com/emiliearies

Dr. Venus’s brother, Tory, went home to be with the Lord this Christmas Eve. She wanted to have a conversation this week to discuss grief, coping, and how it looks different for everyone. Needless to say, they are each coping with the loss of their beloved family member in the best and healthiest way they can at this time, but how? Tune in this week for an intimate and authentic conversation about strategies to cope, accept, nurture, and ultimately have faith after the death of a loved one due to COVID-19.    Key Takeaways: [1:13] Dr. Venus shares the heartbreaking news that her brother Tory passed away from COVID-19. She discusses how it’s important to never judge a person by how they grieve. The process is different for everyone.  [3:28] When someone you care about is grieving, of course you can send your sympathy and love, but don’t expect a back and forth conversation. They could not have the energy or bandwidth beyond seeing your message and acknowledging it.   [5:02] Don’t tell someone that is grieving what to do, or what not to do. It’s a very personal process.  [5:50] For Dr. Venus, a sense of normalcy and stability is what feels best. Keeping a routine helps her stay grounded during an intense time of grief.  [9:05] The Five Stages of Grief are:  Denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance [12:50] If you are the one grieving right now, it’s okay not to talk to people if you feel numb. However you want to show up in the world is okay.  [21:19] We can still be heartbroken and grief stricken but believe that God has an ultimate master plan and have Faith in surrendering to the bigger plan. It doesn’t mean you don’t mourn, but that you set aside your pride and ego to give everything over to God.  [23:50] We have opinions and preferences about how things should be, but we don’t have a big enough view to understand God’s plan.  [25:38] Find things you can spiritually connect with and grieve through. For Dr. Venus, writing and dancing are extremely healing and powerful.  [28:58] Give others (or yourself) the grace of knowing that it’s okay to have delayed reactions in grief. That doesn’t mean you are suppressing, it comes out when it does.    [29:50] Tory was a great brother, father, son, nephew, uncle, friend, provider, and so much more. He was funny, brilliant, entrepreneurial, loving, and kind, and Dr. Venus will always adore him.  [32:49] A large part of COVID is preparation. Take it seriously and do your part.    Quotes:  “The things that have crushed me have turned into cathedrals.”  “For all of us that have lost someone to COVID, know that you are loved, and you are not alone.”    Mentioned: Dr. Venus Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram  “Hot Mess Millionaire” Amazon Pilot  ”Hot Mess Millionaire” Complete Series (https://www.youtube.com/c/DrVenusOpalReese) Join the conversation! This week we start with the first stage offered by Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, namely Denial. What’s the difference between active denial and passive denial? Our template consists of two basic questions: 1) what leads to a good death? and 2) what leads to a good life? Listen in as we discuss this stage of death and dying. RESOURCES: Kübler-Ross, Dr. Elisabeth, On Death and Dying: What the Dying Have to Teach Doctors, Nurses, Clergy and Their Own Families (New York: Scribner, 1969). He is survived by his wife, Marie, and a foundation that bears his name--The Ernest Becker Foundation.   What is Hospice? During a terminal illness, you or your loved ones may talk with your doctor and decide the treatments meant to cure or slow a disease are no longer working, or you’re ready to stop them. Your doctor can make a referral for hospice care, also known as end-of-life care. Hospice provides a relief from pain, either caused by the illness or the symptoms. We start our journey with two basic questions: 1) what leads to a good death? and 2) what leads to a good life? Listen in as we discuss our starting position, and, and tell us how you’d answer these questions. Here are a few disclaimers as we start this podcast: we aren’t experts, we haven’t died, we speak in cursory… meaning there is some swearing. Episode 4: Spirit Communication & Life on the Other Side Inside this episode, we’ll discuss: How to recognize signs (in the light) from loved ones on other side. Allay people’s fears about connecting with their loved ones who’ve passed over. Share some of the research and studies about how people transition from life to death. Share personal stories about near death experiences (NDE) Discuss how energy never dies but only transforms, according to scientific principles.   Resources mentioned in the show: Articles and Books: Talking to Heaven, by James Van Praagh. Adventures of the Soul, by James Van Praagh. Visions, Trips and Crowded Rooms, by David Kessler. Article by David Kessler: Who and What You See Before You Die.” My Stroke of Insight, by Dr. Jill Bolte-Taylor On Death and Dying: What the Dying Have to Teach Doctors, Nurses, Clergy and Their Own Families, by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. The Other Side and Back, by Sylvia Browne TV Shows: Ghost Whisperer Medium   Show Highlights: Loved Ones on the Other Side “When we talk about connecting with loved ones on the other side, we’re doing it “in the light” through love and awareness. We aren’t promoting séances, or using spirit boards or connecting with unknown spirit energy. This is firmly based in the light of love. And that love connection never dies, even though the body dies our love connections transcend time and space.”   Albert Einstein on Energy “According to Albert Einstein, scientist, genius, energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another. An example is how chemical energy can be converted into kinetic energy. When a person dies, their energy or essence isn’t destroyed, it transforms into a different form, which doesn’t have a body; nor is it only operating in the 3D dimension of time and space.”   Energy and Near Death Experiences “There’s so many of us who’ve had experiences where you dream about a loved one that has passed, or have some type of experience that just doesn’t make sense, and it’s hard to explain, but you feel like your deceased loved one is with you or communicating with you.” “There are so many famous or popular near death experiences that also show us that people pass from their bodies and continue to have conscious experiences. Most of these stories are really beautiful and life affirming.”   “One of my favorite stories isn’t really a near death experience, but is about one woman’s experience of suffering a stroke. The book is called My Stroke of Insight and the author is Jill Bolte-Taylor. It’s a phenomenal story. Jill was a woman pretty conscious of how her body and mind were affected by her stroke who noticed an increase in her sensitivities in various areas of her life.  She became really aware of people’s energy even if they never said a word. There was a time when she was hospitalized, but couldn’t communicate or process mentally the way she normally could. And so she had this intense sensitivity to people’s energy, her nurses, her mother, strangers, etc. The main lesson I got from her book and experience was to be aware of the energy I am bringing into a space because it absolutely has an affect. I am usually aware of other’s energy, but that put me on the road to really understanding and being responsible for my energy. It’s something I still am learning and practicing today. It has layers to it.”   Research on People Transitioning “David Kessler, author of the book “Visions, Trips and Crowded Rooms” has done some extensive research on death, grief and transitions into the after life. He interviewed doctors, nurses, hospice workers, dying people and their families about the days and moments leading up to people’s deaths. And, many of those people had similar stories of the dying seeing a light, or talking about taking a trip, as well as seeing loved ones who had already died returning to them in their final moments to take them back “home.” And of course, feelings of love and peace were also common themes among the dying.”   10 Signs of Divine Communication from Loved Ones Butterflies Dreams Personal mementos Seeing or hearing your loved one’s names, nicknames, pet names Familiar scents or smells (ex. Perfume, cigar smoke, shampoo) Music (ex. Wedding song, favorite song) Familiar feelings Rainbows Finding coins or loose change Being led back to a familiar place   Dreams of Deceased Loved Ones “I always have dreams of loved ones who have passed on. And in the dream I know that they have passed and I know that I’m talking to them. I saw an interview with Mindy Kaling; I think it was when she was pubbing the movie A Wrinkle In Time. But she said she had dreams of her mother after passed and she was aware in the dream that she was talking to her mother after her death. Mindy said she kept saying “This is can’t be happening or you can’t be here.” and she said her mom would just say, “I know, I know.” But its like she was there and like hey let’s chat and catch up.” “I’ve had that same experience with my good friend Ray in passed in 2008 and my grandfather, he passed in the nineties and he had a rad acid washed jean jacket on in my dream and he though it was cool and hip. It was funny because I knew it was my granddad. I dream about my dad like that too. I don’t doubt it. I know in the moment that they are visiting me. Anytime a deceased person I know appears in a dream I know they are visiting me!” Butterfly Symbolism “A really good friend of mine passed away unexpectedly. A few months before she passed away, I had given her a butterfly necklace. It was the last time I saw her, but for some reason when I gave her the necklace I thought I might not see her again. I don’t know why. I thought it was because I had moved across the country to California and wouldn’t get back to visit her and my family as much. After she passed away, I kept having these experiences where butterflies would surround me. It happened on more than one occasion. One time I was really sad, the grief had hit me hard and I was leaving my acupuncturist who helped me through it. Well, I get to my car and these butterflies were flying around my window. Then, another time, after her funeral, I was lying out by a pool, back in California and four butterflies were flying around me, even landing on me! I have a photo of it somewhere. But, I knew it was a “hello from heaven”. “Seeing and hearing other people’s experiences made me more open to the possibility and beliefs that our loved ones energy can communicate with us in the earth-dense plane. It’s more likely than not.” How to Honor Deceased Loved Ones “There are many ways to honor your loved ones. You can carry on a tradition or cause in their memory. You can designate a special space in your home to remember them and may respect. Talking to them or writing them a letter is nice too because they hear you. You can do something they us to love to do, something fun and joyous! Their spirit and love never dies. It expands.” Clearing and Shielding with White Light “If you do want to connect with your loves ones, make sure to holding loving thoughts and surround yourself with white light. You want to shield your energy and clear out any energy that isn’t in the light. And the best way to do that is through prayers, or visualizing a white light around you.” “We hope that by sharing our stories you are able to recognize signs from your loved ones on the other side. And hopefully we’ve quelled some fears around the idea that your loved ones are communicating with you from the other side. We want to validate those people who’ve had similar experiences or have questions about this topic and remind them that energy transforms, but the bonds of Love can never be broken.” For Banyan Botanical's Ayurveda products and to support the show, click  Robyn's Banyan purchase link HERE.
