Most of our episodes have been about engagement in institutional healthcare spaces - places like hospitals or research institutes. But of course, there are a multitude of other places where patient or service user engagement takes place.  Our guests are Jenn Broad and Paula Tookey. They work out of the South Riverdale Community Health Center in East Toronto. Jenn is the Program Manager of Harm Reduction and Hep C. And Paula is the Manager of Keep Six, a consumption and treatment service, which is a health service described as a place where people inject, snort, or orally consume pre-obtained drugs in a safe, hygienic and welcoming environment under the supervision of trained staff.  As you listen, we encourage you to tune in to their insights specific to engagement within a community that experiences persistent stigma and systemic discrimination. What we learned from talking to Jenn and Paula is that engagement in certain health related community services, like harm reduction programs, has different and possibly higher stakes for the people involved than what we typically think of as "patient engagement" in mainstream or organizational health services. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: The failure of Erin O'Toole's Conservative Party to make its hoped-for breakthrough in Ontario in the federal election is by no means any guarantee that voters will reject Premier Doug Ford and his Progressive Conservatives in the provincial election that's just eight months away.  The provincial parties are analyzing the results of the federal vote and trying to figure out the implications for Ontario politics. While top strategists from all the main provincial parties insist it would be unwise to draw straightforward conclusions about the Ontario vote from the federal vote, they do say there are lessons to be learned. GUEST: Muhammed Ali, Senior Consultant for Crestview Strategies - As of Wednesday with 155 of 155 polls on the Mountain reporting – minus close to 2,600 special ballots and mail-in votes being counted as of Tuesday – an estimated 47,202 votes were cast in the riding with Hepfner picking up 34 per cent (16,304) ahead of the NDP's Malcolm Allen who garnered 32.4 per cent (15,285). Conservative Al Miles was third in the race with 11,576 votes. The Canadian Press called a Hepfner win just after 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday when the agency reported Elections Canada expected most of the mail-in ballots across Canada to be counted by the end of day. GUEST: Lisa Hepfner, New MP for Hamilton Mountain - Why are people pushing back on the vax passport? What is triggering their emotion when it comes to civil liberties and personal freedoms that call the pandemic a ‘medical dictatorship'? GUEST: Steve Joordens, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto  - When Betty Zou and a group of concerned parents in East Toronto hatched a plan to create a COVID-19 rapid testing program at their children's school, they never imagined they would soon be providing tutorials and sharing “how to” documents with families in communities across Canada. “Since we've launched, we've had a ton of email inquiries from schools in the area and even in other districts, like Peel, Etobicoke, Burlington, as far away as Saskatoon and Surrey, B.C. from other parents who are just really interested in replicating our model at their schools,” she said. Today we're talking with Carmine Stumpo, President and CEO of Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital. Carmine joined Orillia Soldiers' in 2018 after spending 21 years at Michael Garron Hospital in East Toronto. Even if one of his first acts as CEO was participating in a polar swim fundraiser, Carmine has warmed up to every element of running a community hospital. This spring he was proud to unveil the hospital's five-year strategic plan under the banner “We Are One Community”. The pandemic necessitated a radical reboot in how they structured the plan but Carmine is determined that all staff, volunteers and partners see themselves in that plan. One of his proudest – and most difficult – moments during the pandemic was overseeing the hospital's support of a long-term care facility when it experienced a tragic COVID outbreak. Although he's been through crises before, Carmine said it was a humbling event that tested his personal resilience. Quotables “You need to be cognizant of the fact that there are really good practices and we need to celebrate that and appreciate that.” – CS “We were able to come up with a strategy that we believe reflects, in a very positive and forward-thinking way, the aspirations of this hospital and what aspire to be for our team.” - CS “The number one issue is, how do we continue to sustain the service and address some of our facility needs that we will have in the years to come which have been accelerated because of this tremendous growth. We see this as an opportunity.” - CS “As leaders, it was a humbling experience around an incredibly difficult situation and reminding ourselves why we're in the healthcare industry, how important it is to band together in these crises and do what we can to support because it is larger than any one organization.” - CS “The best advice I can give to an emerging healthcare leader is, leadership matters.” - CS “Volunteering to do that work, preparing vaccines was a ton of fun, great to work with our community, and was really re-energizing.” – CS   With his avid interest in woodworking, near the beginning of the pandemic, Carmine challenged himself with building his office. It included a very attractive series of wine racks – and ‘in true pharmacist fashion' he has positioned his licence as a certified mixologist. After attempting to balance hiring a marketing/sales team for the tech start-up she had previously been working at with raising two small children, she realized that there needed to be more support for parents in the workplace. Hence, in October 2018, The Workaround was born. Along with founding The Workaround, Amanda is the author of Day Nine, a post-partum depression memoir published in April 2019. She has received international media coverage, including being named an inspirational speaker in Forbes Magazine, and she is a regular contributor to The Globe and Mail, where she covers topics such as parenting, purpose-driven business, and the necessary evolution of the normal 9-5 workday. She is also the co-author of the Parenting Playbook, a free resource for tech founders to support parents in the workplace. Amanda currently serves as President of the Board of Directors for Creative Preschool of East Toronto, and in 2019 she joined the Board of Directors for the Danforth Mosaic Business Improvement Area (BIA). In this episode, Amanda goes in-depth on what it was like to be both a parent and a full-time employee, which is what inspired her to found The Workaround; her challenges in launching The Workaround, and how those led her to rethink certain aspects of her business; the cultural stigma of parents in the professional world, and how society needs to rethink the professional structure to accommodate accordingly; and her vision for 2020 for both herself and The Workaround.
