The Defensive Line Starts at 1:00 Brian says we're not allowed to cackle through this or be hype the whole time, but we spend a lot of time talking about what to expect from Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant before getting into their depth. Benny has a road back to health but should have his breakout year about now. After him it's iffy, since Etta had to move inside. Pierce is Just a Nose for now. After them…not much. Edge should be deep and excellent again. Josaiah Stewart is younger than Derrick Moore and was in the process of turning into a complete Amoeba edge. Moore is on his way to Tacodom and the NFL Draft. TJ Guy has been waiting forever. Think part of the reason Etta moved was because they like Cam Brandt a lot. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. Hot Takes and Linebackers Starts at 47:18 We are buying the Barham hype, yes. Because of practice and film and the talk. Hausmann was a nickel in high school and never lost that agility, played along with the starters last year and wasn't a drop. Think Rolder's end of the year isn't fair, that his freshman year was more telling. Seth likes Jaydon Hood, the last of the Don Brown backs. Cole Sullivan will probably be good but don't want to see too much of him this year. 3. Secondary Starts at 1:12:38 This Will Johnson fellow, maybe you've heard of him. Can't afford an injury so no he can't play receiver and return puts you sickos. Was injured last year so this year could be special, or he could be avoided as Jyaire Hill gets his feet under him. Good news that he's moved up, always needed time to mature. Still younger than most of the freshman, and played safety in high school. Backups are the transfers-Hall has drawn comps to Wallace But Fast so that's your #3 guy—Seth thinks he's Gemon Green. Kechaun Harris could play too. Ricky Johnson might need a year. Safeties took a hit losing Rod Moore but Makari Paige will be nice and forgotten, Quinten Johnson had his light go on and we're glad they fished him out of UDFA'dom. Think the transfers will take time to learn the defense but should be in a regular rotation—Mangham is another Sabb, blow up next year. Zeke Berry won the nickel job over McBurrows, which is impressive. Will be more of a blitzer, won't be Sainristil, but they went portal shopping for safeties because they wanted Berry in the slot that much. Brandyn Hillman has a role as the hybrid if they want to go 4-3 against running QBs again. 4. Special Teams and Wink Starts at 1:34:57 Tommy Doman might never punt again but he's good at it; the consistency is coming with age. Dominic Zvada is another good portal kicker, has two years to play, missed all of his bad ones early last year. Returns will be fun with Semaj. Wink is going to blitz because that fits the personnel. Things Discussed: Talking about how Michigan put their NIL program together the first time: in the 1890s. They were behind for awhile, but they got it done. M-Power: Same story. Michigan is going to have the head coach educating donors on their NIL opportunities instead of having all these different collectives fighting each other. Why it looks like this: Michigan didn't have a system in place like most schools. Every collective started on their own vision. Now we're at the point where we need to have a vision, and a case manager who can explain it all. In the break: Was Michigan's attrition bad? Not really. Gemon Green is the only guy Seth really thought we should be able to hold onto. Erick All? Personal deal, might not be healthy next year, wasn't going to be better than Loveland, but would have been better than AJ Barner. Back to NIL: Harbaugh wasn't going to wait around. They have a couple of weeks here when he's not coaching football. What does basketball do? Seth: Someone will step up to be the sugar daddy. Sam: Four head coaches on this staff. Partridge got their asses in gear on this after seeing what they're doing at Ole Miss.

NFL – Damar Hamlin asked who won Bills-Bengals when he woke up Damar Hamlin’s doctors say the Buffalo Bills safety has begun to communicate in writing with his family and others who have been at his bedside since going into cardiac arrest Monday — and his first question was “did we win?” Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said in a conference call with reporters that Hamlin remains critically ill and in the hospital's intensive care unit. But they say it appears his neurological function is intact, meaning he can follow commands and move. The developments come as the Bills return to practice for the first time since Hamlin collapsed during the first quarter of Buffalo's game against the Bengals. NFL – NFL: Bills-Bengals won’t resume; playoff scenarios revealed The NFL won’t resume the Bills-Bengals game that was suspended Monday night after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed and went into cardiac arrest on the field. The league announced its decision on Thursday. The NFL said its decision creates “potential competitive inequities in certain playoff scenarios.” The league said clubs on Friday, in a special league meeting, would consider a resolution recommended by the commissioner and approved Thursday by the Competition Committee. The Bills-Bengals game had major playoff implications. Buffalo entered Monday night needing a win to maintain the AFC's No. 1 seed. The Kansas City Chiefs currently hold that spot. The Bengals had a chance to earn that top seed with two more wins and a loss by the Chiefs. NFL – National Football League – Week 18 (Final Week of the regular season) Sunday Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears, 1:00 p.m. Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts, 1:00 p.m. Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers, 8:20 p.m.                Rock 107 WIRX 7:15 NFL – Late-season runs raise stakes for Lions-Packers matchup The Green Bay Packers know they reach the postseason if they win Sunday night. The Detroit Lions' playoff prospects are a little more complicated. Detroit can reach the playoffs by beating the Packers only if Seattle loses to the LA Rams earlier in the day. A Seahawks victory would eliminate Detroit. The Lions insist they'll still have plenty of incentive to beat their NFC North rivals even if it has no impact on their own postseason fortunes. The Lions have won seven of their last nine games and are coming off a 41-10 blowout of Chicago. Detroit already has come a long way after going 3-13-1 last year in Coach Dan Campbell's debut season. The Lions are seeking their first playoff berth since 2016 and have a chance to end a run of four straight losing seasons. At least five players experienced a heart-related issue in the NHL over the past 25 years. All of them collapsed during games. All of them survived including Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer. The NHL has updated its policies and required more robust medical support at games. Experts say that’s key and adjustments should continue to make sure medical staffs and teams are always prepared. Harbaugh also has been mentioned as a possible candidate to coach in Denver and Indianapolis. Michigan is also awaiting word from the NCAA on an investigation into the football program regarding impermissible texts and calls to high school prospects during part of a COVID-19 dead period, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday. Michigan got a big 29-7 win over Michigan State on Saturday night, but the entire contest was overshadowed by what happened in the tunnel after the game. Michigan cornerbacks Ja'Den McBurrows and Gemon Green were assaulted by numerous Michigan State players in the tunnel, which has resulted an investigation and charges being pressed. Jim Harbaugh and Mel Tucker both spoke about the incident on Monday afternoon and the messaging could not have been more different. We also talk about Michigan's offense, which is dominating teams while at the same time struggling in the red zone. It's a weird conundrum, but the Wolverines are 8-0 and rolling. The offense is a machine, but it bogs down once close to the end zone too often. So far, it hasn't hurt them, even a little bit, but everyone already has an eye on that massive showdown in late-November.

Things discussed: Offense: Let's talk about the tight ends! Putting three of them out there overwhelmed Maryland's size. They're spilling so when they run out of guys it's Corum versus a cornerback. Weird looks: pulling tackles messes with your keys. Duo with a counter step looks like Split is coming. McCarthy: A few bad throws, his footwork might be at fault for overthrows, Maryland used new coverages. OL did fine—don't know what PFF is doing to grade that. Extrapolating to Iowa: different response needed. What do you want to see Michigan practice with McCarthy: more weird zone or reading weird zone coverages? Fascinating to see JJ versus Iowa who's trying to confuse you and make you throw INTs. Let's run some trick plays and close it down. During break: Mel Pearson's side of the story. Believe Shields was mad, not that he can turn a third of the program against him. It's not fair to make this a he said/she said; the WilmerHale Report and Mel getting a friendly to tell his side are different things. The one part of his story that checks out is it's at least plausible that "making people lie about COVID" is about the contact tracing forms instruction, not something nefarious by the coach. Defense: Mazi Smith and Kris Jenkins fixed the linebacker problem by two-gapping and not letting the ball get to that level. High-level metagame between the Maryland OL reacting to Michigan's blitzes. Cornerbacks! Gemon Green ran everybody's routes. Sainristil is Daxhillian in coverage, not in the box. Turner huge plays. Rough game from the LBs and Mullings in particular. Need Nikhai Hill-Green's aggressiveness. Maryland was well-prepped for this game. Lots of tempo, weird plays, scripted drives. Got their best shot by far. Pressure with four? Upshaw no. Harrell no, maybe sometimes, but when not emphatically no. DTs don't get a lot of chances—when they got to rush they got upfield but M's system wants a DT to hang back to prevent an escape run down the middle.

After Dan graces us with a voicemail intro, Connor and Taylor join Ace to break down Michigan's closer-than-anticipated win over Maryland, discuss how it impacted our outlook on the Wolverines, name our Big Ten teams of the week and more. Topics: Dan leaves a voicemail. Actually, two voicemails. The respect bit is over. Warm and fuzzy homecoming feelings. An extended discussion of playcalling, game management, the nature of watching games in particular settings and the challenge of separating that initial experience from our postgame analysis. We very much agree that the sequence to being the second half was bad. Please don't stand in the pocket forever, J.J. McCarthy. Blake Corum: great! The backups with Donovan Edwards out: a problem! Ace is fed up with Iowa and respecting their chances of winning and we kinda lose the plot for a bit. Max Bredeson: legit. Was the pass rush worrisome or was Taulua Tagovailoa just really dang slippery? Mike Barrett >>> Kalel Mullings right now. Get well soon, Nikhai Hill-Green. The cornerbacks in particular and the secondary in general were excellent, especially against Maryland's talented receiving corps. Gemon Green has been just as good as D.J. Turner this year. The defense needs to do better getting lined up before the snap. Connor called shotgun, which means he led the Michigan State discussion. The Big Ten West is very bad and it should feel bad. Except for Minnesota. Maybe. Northwestern is go 1-11 with a win over Nebraska. PointsBet is my go-to sportsbook. In this episode, Zach Shaw and Steve Lorenz look at the biggest storylines emanating from the Michigan football team's 56-10 win over Hawaii. They begin with a look at J.J. McCarthy's exceptional first start, in which he threw three touchdowns and took control of the Wolverines' starting quarterback battle. We discuss what McCarthy showed, what it means for Michigan's season and what happens next for Cade McNamara. In the second half of the episode, they look at some of the other notable performances from Michigan's lopsided win. The players discussed include Gemon Green, Makari Paige, Giovanni El-Hadi, Will Johnson, CJ Stokes, Isaiah Gash and freshmen defensive linemen. Our position preview series hits episode nine, as Zach Shaw and Steve Lorenz take an in-depth look at their strengths, question marks and predictions for Michigan's defensive backs room. The two open with a look at the versatility of the position group, with multiple players able to fulfill multiple roles in the group. They also look at the overall athleticism and depth of the group, and why that matters. Lorenz then takes a closer look on Gemon Green's pursuit of a bounce-back season, while Shaw looks at the returning safeties' struggles in coverage last season. They close with thoughts on Will Johnson, Zeke Berry and Green. And let's not forget our associate sponsors: Peak Wealth Management, HomeSure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, The Phil Klein Insurance Group, Prentice 4M, where we recorded this, and introducing (to the podcast at least) TicketIQ! and The Nose Bleeds, which is the Sklars Bros' reboot of Cheap Seats on UFC Fight Pass. Free episode: 1. Defensive Line starts at 1:00 Despite Chris Hinton's departure, defensive tackle looks like a solid group! Mazi Smith was named the number one freak in the country by Bruce Feldman (in a good way). Is Mazi Smith finally happening this year? It might finally be happening this year, but he's definitely the biggest X-factor on the defense. Former MGoBlog Sleeper of the Year, Kris Jenkins, looks to be rounded into a Ryan Glasgow type. The depth takes a bit of a drop after these two. Consensus seems to be that Jim Harbaugh's "gift from the football gods" comment was referring to Kenneth Grant. Brian wants Alex to get older. George Rooks looks encouraging down the road. Jim Harbaugh says the defensive ends won't see much drop-off and might even be just as good - worst offseason lie we've ever heard? We feel good about Mike Morris, who should be a B+/A- player. After that, ehhh. Taylor Upshaw might be ok, Braiden McGregor hasn't been talked about much in camp. TJ Guy is a guy. Derrick Moore could be great but is a true freshman. Julius Welschof could be an X-factor! Brian wants a weakside end that eats peoples' souls and that probably doesn't exist this year.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] --------------------- 2. Hot Takes and Linebackers starts at 31:20 Takes hotter than whatever is going on in the capillaries in Brian's face from having to record all the hot takes segments at once. Linebackers are in a similar boat as defensive tackle - two guys coming on that you feel good about and then a pretty stiff drop-off. Junior Colson and Nikhai Hill-Green's development this season will be crucial for this defense, Josh Ross isn't around to solve your problems anymore. Junior Colson runs fast, sometimes in the right direction. Next man up is Michael Barrett, who is not an inside linebacker. Maybe they give Jaydon Hood a chance? The freshmen probably won't contribute much this year. Maybe they Ravens it and run one linebacker- wait they did that against Michigan State, never mind.  3. Secondary starts at 54:21 Last year's secondary intro was "oh god oh no" (and it ended up being fine), this year feels much better! DJ Turner is the 4th Michigan player to make Feldman's Freaks list and was on a 3rd team All American list. Gemon Green has never performed at the highest level but has shown flashes. He's a decent to good Big Ten corner but the ball always goes through his hands, this is a good floor at cornerback. Enter Will Johnson: a true freshman who will absolutely see the field. Moving a starter from receiver to cornerback usually is a bad sign, but I think we feel... fine? About Mike Sainristil? He played offense and defense in high school and has the athleticism for the position so he might be decent in the new role. Those are probably the four corners that will get significant snaps, we probably won't see much of Jaylen Perry. At safety, are we sure Brad Hawkins doesn't have another year of eligibility? RJ Moten and Rod Moore will likely be the starters. They held their own in the snaps they played last season, including against Ohio State. The rest of the depth chart looks ok if they need to step up. There's been positive chatter about Quinten Johnson? Seth is high on Damani Dent.  4. Special Teams and Defense in Summary starts at 1:21:06 Special Teams: same as last year, the end. Jake Moody, Brad Robbins, AJ Henning, and Blake Corum are back. Also Ronnie Bell is back to return punts (/TweekACK). Shout outs to Jay Harbaugh for being the best special teams coach in the country and Cornelius Johnson for blocking two punts. Best special teams unit in the country? What would Nebraska's record be last year if they had Michigan's special teams? Overall defense feels rickety, there are maybe four or five spots that having to rely on backups would be bad. If you were starting a defense from scratch, starting with two good defensive tackles and good cornerbacks is a good start. Expectation for the defense is around top 20-30.  MUSIC: “No Beginner”—Serengeti “Ode to Viceroy”—Mac Demarco “Tidal Wave”—The Apples in Stereo “Across 110th Street”

This episode was supposed to be recorded at Prentice 4M, on the other end of The Bridge, started by a couple of readers to have the perfect, affordable, safe, and clean living/renting/working space near campus. 1. Offense vs WMU starts at 1:00 Do we start with the good news (they can run), the bad news (Bell), or the future news (McCarthy). #SpeedInSpace is over—there were no reads and lots of fake reads that burned downs or delivered safeties and linebackers to the running backs immediately. In this game at least the RBs could put those defenders on their asses. JJ seems to be erratic. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs WMU starts at 28:58 One drive of bleeding plus a Not Angry About That throw over Gemon Green (and a taunting on Ojabo) and then not much. Just a few gashes from LBs getting out of position. Hinton looked like their best DT, Hutchinson got to spend a lot of time on the sideline while they rotated a lot of guys. Mike Morris, hello there. Secondary looked okay but shaky—they're better as a zone team. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 44:45 The hot takes are half the segment even though there was a lot of special teams, because the only game theory stuff was at the end of the 1st half (learn to manage a clock!). Much of the game was spent waiting around for Brad Robbins punts to land. Using Bell as a returner. Foug'ing it. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:00:35 We go long this time of year because there are so many games. Jamie does not recognize the existence of Iowa. Macdonald's Origin Story & D-Line starts at 1:00 Brian does not like this idea of taking the Ravens LBs coach and making him the coordinator of a defense that looks like a 5-2 in 2021. The three guys they plan to start have talent but there are a lot of walk-on names behind them. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Hot Takes and Linebackers starts at 17:08 Not as petrified as we were in spring, except Brian. Only two linebackers there are. We try to talk Brian into Nikhai Hill-Green—Seth thinks this is a good development because Barrett struggled against Wisconsin in a more linebacker-ish role. Not worried about Mullings because he was a two-year project. Colson should be fun. Josh Ross is mentioned like “He's good, next.” 3. The Secondary starts at 30:43 Immediately rip off the band-aid and discuss cornerbacks. Brian is the positive(!) one about Gemon Green, at least in man coverage. DJ Turner II has plausible deniability, the two 2020 cornerback recruits do not. May it be Ja'Den McBurrows to the rescue mid-season? The safeties are either the best tandem in the Big Ten, or that just because they have Dax Hill, but Seth thinks he will be in nickel role a ton this year with RJ Moten blooming at safety. 4. How it All Fits starts at 46:45 Please remember there's a nickel for every spread. Difference between this and Wisconsin. Can it work? It can't be worse. Maybe it can be 2011-style weird enough to kick the other team off the field sometimes.
