Cincinnati Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the 2024 punter battle and the new kickoff rules for the 2024 season. The Bengals currently have three punters battling it out for the starting job: 2023 draft pick Brad Robbins, Austin McNamara, a college free agent from Texas Tech, and Ryan Rehkow, a college free agent from BYU. Coach Simmons is impressed with all three, each with its strengths and weaknesses. Simmons says the battle will be cut to two by the time the Bengals play their first preseason game next Saturday. One of the biggest changes for the 2024 NFL season is the new kickoff. Adopting the XFL kickoff will totally change the play and hopefully make it more exciting, with the goal of achieving safer returns. Coach Simmons explains the new kickoff in a great and easy-to-understand way. We want to thank Coach Simmons for always being a fantastic guest and for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham, brought to you by First Star Logistics. We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. We also discussed which rookies may make a year-1 impact, including Amarius Mims' chance to win a starting job in training camp, and who will emerge as WR3 in 2024. Jay Morrison and Dallas Robinson discuss all the latest Bengals news, including Tee Higgins' franchise tag, lackluster NFLPA report cards, free agent RT and DT options, a potential Dax Hill position change, and Brad Robbins replacements.
Cincinnati Bengals Special Teams coach Darrin Simmons joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the ups and downs of his special teams during the 2023 season and how the Bengals will fill their weaknesses in the upcoming offseason. The Bengals had a lot of new changes on special teams for the 2023 season. The two biggest changes were two rookies; Brad Robbins and Charlie Jones starting as punter and returner. Jones made his impact quite fast as he had his first NFL touchdown on a punt return in week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens. A return that was huge for the Bengals at the time and kept them alive in the game. Robbins was drafted in the 6th round of the 2023 NFL draft and had high expectations being one of the best punters in college in his final season. It was an up-and-down season for Robbins who finished in the middle of the pack in most statistics and near last in average yards per punt (44 yards). Simmons and Lap also talk about how the Bengals will address their biggest weaknesses going into the 2024 season. The biggest question is around wide receiver Tee Higgins, will the Bengals franchise tag Tee, extend him, or let him walk in free agency? Another important position is solidifying the right tackle position with the expected departure of Jonah Williams. In one of the most important offseasons in Bengals history, it will be interesting to see what the Bengals do. We want to thank Coach Simmons for always being a fantastic guest and for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. Cincinnati Bengals assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Coach Simmons and Dave talk about the first two games and a preview of the Bengals Monday night matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. While the Bengals offensively have had a rough start to the season the Bengals special teams play has been stellar. The special teams actually scored the first touchdown of the season when rookie Charlie Jones returned a punt for a touchdown in the second quarter against the Ravens. It was the first touchdown on a punt return for the Bengals since Adam Jones so it was very exciting to see and it's encouraging to see Jones make such an impact in his second career game. Brad Robbins has been up and down so far in his first two games but certain punts have definitely shown why the Bengals drafted him in the 6th round of this year's draft. Hopefully, the special teams' success continues during the season as the offense starts to come alive as well. When the Cincinnati Bengals selected Michigan punter Brad Robbins in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, they sent a message about competition being open at every position on the field. Last season saw a change at punter, with longtime punter Kevin Huber being pushed by Drue Chrisman before Huber was released and Chrisman was signed to the active roster. Now, Chrisman will be pushed, as many expect Robbins to replace the former Ohio State punter this season. Robbins joins Dave Lapham In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss being a multi-sport athlete growing up in Central Ohio, choosing Michigan despite his parents both being Ohio State grads, playing for Jim Harbaugh and how an injury prepared him to think of a life without the game of football.

We welcome back to In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor for an in-depth look at the Bengals rookies and new free agents and an early look at the 2023 NFL schedule. Lapham and Taylor talk about the newest veteran additions like Orlando Brown, Nick Scott, Sidney Jones, Cody Ford, and Tarell Basham while also giving snapshots of all seven 2023 draft picks, Myles Murphy, DJ Turner, Jordan Battle, Charlie Jones, Chase Brown, Andrei Iosivas, and Brad Robbins, as well as one massive undrafted free agent signed. Before we know it, the Bengals will welcome the Green Bay Packers to Paycor for pre-season play as they prepare for their season opener against AFC North rival, the Cleveland Browns, to kick off their title defense.
The NFL's best offenses are taking shape this offseason. Most teams are working through their organized team activities and the Bengals will have theirs coming up in the first week of June. For the Bengals, these workouts are far from competitive, but they're setting the stage for training camp with the hope of being one of the best offenses in the NFL. The Bengals have the tools to play like a top five offense, but the question is how well they can materialize their resources into playing like one. Concerns surrounding the run game without Samaje Perine and the tight end position without Irv Smith Jr. have led several former coaches and critics, like former longtime NFL head coach Mike Martz, to question if the Bengals really are capable of playing like a top five offense. Are those concerns as valid as they seem? And are teams ranked ahead of the Bengals actually top five offenses? The Strictly Stripes crew examines Martz's claims and other claims that the Bengals aren't a top five offense and looks at how accurate they are or aren't. Rookie punter Brad Robbins joins the crew as a special guest. This podcast features Mohammad Ahmad, Andrew Gillis and Michael Niziolek. It's the “Future Days” edition of the Bengals Booth Podcast as broadcasters Dan Hoard and Dave Lapham discuss the 2023 schedule and take a week-by-week look at the Bengals' path to winning the AFC North for the third straight year. Plus, a pair of one-on-one conversations with a pair of Bengals draft picks – cornerback DJ Turner who tells us about his unusual first name, and punter Brad Robbins who admits that he wasn't sure that it was really Zac Taylor when he got his draft day phone call.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Special Teams Coordinator Darrin Simmons joins In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to recap the Bengals 2023 draft. Coach Simmons gives his scouting routine and how he looks at these prospects in a different light compared to other coaches on the Bengals staff. The Bengals selected a specialist in Round 6 of the draft with Brad Robbins. Robbins punted at Michigan and was one of the best punters in college football last season. The Bengals had a need at punter and Robbins should be a major upgrade he's also a fantastic holder on field goals, never fumbling a snap during his time at Michigan. The Bengals 4th round selection, wide receiver Charlie Jones from Purdue is also a talented return man. During his time at Iowa before transferring his last year he returned punts and kickoffs and was very explosive at both. The Bengals really haven't had an explosive return man since Pac-Man Jones so Jones will not only be exciting to watch on offense but on special teams as well. You don't want to miss this special episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Enjoy!

Brad Robbins has had a lot of success as a punter, but his road has not been without turns and bumps. Experiences with injury in his collegiate career, as well as the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on his mental health, caused him to look for ways to quiet his mind. He took steps to learn about meditation and he developed a practice that has supported his mental health and athletic performance. Brad has found benefit in helping others through a campaign that utilized his platform, and he has seen the impact that creating a culture of serving others can have on athlete wellness. Brad shares about his experiences and techniques he uses to maintain mental wellness on this episode of Unit3d.

TCU Preview: Offense starts at 1:00 Don't buy the "They ain't played nobody" line; TCU's schedule was the same, also Michigan beat Ohio State, a Playoff team, 45-23 on the road. Spread offense with Duggan pulling out magic. Has a deep ball down, has some good deep threats in huge receivers Quentin Johnson, the star, TE Jared Wiley who's 6-7, and Savion Williams who's 6-5. Plus a standard slot and a good running back. The OL doesn't get much push; they're all the same 6-5/300 too-stiff-for-tackle guard, give up pass rush, but don't let Duggan loose. Man up Johnson on Johnston or play lots of zone? Seth thinks man; Brian thinks zone. 2. TCU Preview: Defense starts at 35:20 It's the 404 Tite, with ISU's three-safety three-high look that temps you into passing. Positionless defense is tough on reads but breakable if you plow through it; Michigan might want to go many-TEs and push the gap out to the edge versus smaller force defenders. DL want to take on doubles, Michigan moves those kinds of DTs. LBs are not the most athletic sorts; would be great if Edwards's hand is healthy enough to make him a passing game threat again. 3. TCU Preview: Special Teams and Heuristics starts at 1:02:33 Their slot is also a dangerous returner; just kick it out of the endzone. Meh Aussie punter, very good kicker who rarely misses and has a career long of 54. Michigan hopes Brad Robbins was hurt when their punt efficiency went off a cliff later in the season. Their season was Vikings-esque, pulling out all of the games that could have swung either way, benefiting from things like Texas not hitting any open deep shots. Discussion on the meta of Playoff competition, TCU being at the lower end of teams to make it. 2015 MSU was the outlier; every other Playoff team is at least good. Ryan Day scenarios. 4. Hot Takes and Hoops vs North Carolina starts at 1:22:46 Hard to beat UNC when your best player is a no-show. The quadruple technical was some weenie-ass officiating, Seth's still mad at Hunter for doing that when fouls on either center are the game. Good to see Bufkin turning into a real star, good to see Jett can shoot over any wing. What to do now? Kinda have to roll with what they got and hope TW and HD can pick up their games. The Tunnel Incident starts at 1:00 We're hoping that Brad Robbins is enjoying his extended vacation. We discuss the tunnel incident. This was an assault and should be called such, doesn't matter which beat is discussing it. Even the Michigan vs Ohio State rivalry doesn't have stuff this bad happening. There have not been "three incidents" in the tunnel, the Ohio State one was just hooting and hollering. Penn State was hooting and hollering plus an airborne Uncrustable. Maybe Michigan should just double down on the hooting and hollering, it's not actually doing anything wrong. The post-game stuff on the field was just a fracas which is a rivalry thing that happens. Michigan State players now have a history of trying to intentionally injure Michigan players (going back to trying to twist Denard Robinson's neck), something we don't even see with Ohio State. McBurrows running into the tunnel is irrelevant to what those Michigan State players did to him. Maybe an honest punishment would be making the game be at Michigan Stadium next season? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Offense vs Michigan State starts at 23:47 Brian got the score right in the preview for once! 64-0 would've been nicer, though. Every note on Blake Corum is "that was good." There's nothing to say about him because... what can you say?? Everything is just... good. Redzone play calling could've been better. Ronnie Bell is a great blocker but is asked to make impossible blocks sometimes. It's starting to sound like Michigan might be able to run the ball really well on November 26- LALALALA NOT TALKING ABOUT THAT YET. JJ had some inconsistent incompletions, probably could've aired it out better but hey, you've got Blake Corum. You only lose this game by having six turnovers so maybe they played a little conservatively. 3. Hot Takes, Defense, and Game Theory starts at 53:03 Takes significantly less hot than a Michigan State player in the aftermath of an ass beating by Michigan (switching it up a bit). TONE IT DOWN. Michigan State did one successful thing - heave the ball to Keon Coleman. You guys want to get into conspiracy Twitter about officiating and- nope. Being told we're not allowed to go there. Kris Jenkins played a great game. Overall the pressure was a little disappointing in this game. Okie didn't have a big game here, and neither against Penn State. Michigan should have more interceptions than they've had this year. Michigan State's tight ends go 'Blorp Blorp Blorp.' Brian makes noises. Which corner covers who against Ohio St- LALALA NEVER MIND. 'Twas a bad day for 6's. It was surprising seeing Michigan go for a block on 4th and 3. There was some trouble with the snap tee hee. Michigan has snapper depth, MICHIGAN STATE DOES NOT. 4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:28:09 Just gonna dive right into Penn State vs Ohio State. JT Tuamol- Tuimull- Tumulo- ... JTT tormented Penn State. A Penn State team that got waxed by Michigan had a 4th quarter lead... This looks like a beatable Ohio State team (*knock on all nearby available wood*). The Penn State Rube Goldberg drive. Ohio State couldn't get a screen pass going at all against Penn State. Did Ohio State just not prepare enough for Penn State? Maybe Penn State is built to defend Ohio State better than Michigan? Illinois vs Michigan is looking like maybe the [2nd] best Big Ten game this season. Illinois Purdue for the Big Ten West might be intriguing, though. Minnesota... uh... thoroughly beat Rutgers. Happy Rutgers week. Iowa scored 33 points!! Who should be under more duress, Pat Fitzgerald or Brian/Kirk Ferentz? What would a Gattis vs Ferentz matchup look like? THERE'S AN AFTER-CREDITS SCENE. MUSIC: "I Ain't Proud"—Langhorne Slim "You Want It, You Got It"—Detroit Emeralds "It Ain't That Easy Being Green"—Ray Charles “Across 110th Street”
The Boys bring on friend of the pod, Brad Robbins, as he talks about his potential triple crown season in CFB. HOTY x POTY x MOTY SZN. Crack a coldy and enjoy the show.

Offense vs Penn State starts at 1:00 The subplot of this game in the 4th quarter was if Michigan would get 400 yards rushing or not (they got 418). There was a hiccup in the 2nd quarter but otherwise it was The Great Plain Of Reasonable Expectations. The two big runs were a result of JJ's legs because the defense has to respect his running ability. Introducing: the double arc! Urban Meyer said Michigan had no chance of running the ball against Penn State. JJ was great except for a couple uncharacteristic misses on... swing passes? They threw out of the pistol on the first play of the game (obviously they listen to the MGoPodcast). Absolute annihilation in RPS. The pick-six ultimately didn't really matter and probably hits the ground 99 times out of 100 (Brian forgot it even happened). Incredible amount of movement from the offensive line. Blake Corum's little dolphin feet. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Penn State starts at 42:13 Total domination aside from two or three plays. Not many deep shots by Penn State, but Frames Janklin dialed one up on 4th and six (after a timeout...). Two goal line fades?? Kris Jenkins devoured Penn State's five star running back on the first drive. Someone on the Michigan sideline gets a headset sticker for pulling Will Johnson away from getting a taunting penalty. Interesting rotation at safety, Quinten Johnson played a lot in the 4th quarter. Michael Barrett had a thundersack, this was probably his best game. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 1:06:02 Takes so hot they're Jim Harbaugh after he thinks there's been a simulated snap by Penn State's defense. JAKE MOODY CAN TACKLE. FLEX ON THEM, JAKE. TAKE THE FIFTEEN YARDS, IT'S FINE. Seth has Brian's blessing to make fun of Penn State's coaching. AJ Henning was fine, he's shooting his shot. Brad Robbins enjoyed a lovely day outdoors. Penn State players were apparently tweeting before the game which may have led to the tunnel shouting match. Two point conversion was probably the right call. Michigan seems to have greatly reduced playcalling issues (with respect to getting the play in or play clock). They're better at play packages this year. 4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:40:41 Michigan State won a game that they actually deserved to win. Wisconsin couldn't even get 100 passing yards until deep into the 4th quarter, how do you not throw the ball more against Michigan State?? Wisconsin is so bad that only squeezing out a win against them might not actually be a good thing. Purdue walk-on Devin Mackobee put up 178 rushing yards against Nebraska, what on earth is going to happen when Blake Corum gets a chance?? Are we projecting 800 rushing yards against Nebraska?? Starting to look like Purdue vs Illinois for the Big Ten West (how did it come to this). Taulia Tagovailoa might've had a season-ending injury. Maryland just can't escape this from happening every year, now they'll probably lose a few more and it may impact Michigan's strength of schedule. The Illinois vs Minnesota boxscore just does not look indicative of the final score. Illinois dominated in yardage but only won by 12. O/U 1.5 - how many times does Michigan play Illinois this year? MUSIC: "Glad Girls"--Guided by Voices "Beep"--MIA "Plumb Line"--Archers of Loaf “Across 110th Street”
In this episode, we talk to three, long-time administrators who recently have moved to new roles or new districts. We are joined by Theresa Stager, Principal at Saline HS, Brad Robbins, Principal of Croswell-Lexington MS, and Todd Simmons, Principal of Cedar Springs HS. Topics discussed include what challenges and opportunities occurred as they made job changes, advice for others considering a change, and how previous administrator experience played a factor.
As expected, Michigan absolutely dominated UConn to the tune of 59-0. Junior running back Blake Corum found the end zone five times and the Wolverines made several impact plays in all three phases of the game. AJ Henning returned a punt for a touchdown, Caden Kolesar blocked a punt and Brad Robbins looked like one of the more powerful and accurate punters in the country. It's also worth noting that Michigan played over 100 players and at least seven quarterbacks. Freshmen galore saw action and just about everyone who entered the game made their way into the box score. With the Wolverines sitting at an easily attained 3-0, everything gets real next week as Big Ten play starts. The Wolverines will host Maryland at noon next Saturday.

Let's talk about JJ. 11/12 on passing and the one miss hit Ronnie in the facemask. Harbaugh announces JJ as the starter for UConn without even checking the tape. JJ made some opponent invariant throws that we're excited about. Cade had every opportunity to keep his job and he just didn't execute. How can you explain his dip in performance as anything but him looking over his shoulder? CJ Stokes looks like a Karan Higdon type runner. Max Bredeson had a nice catch and started to outrun the entire defense! Donovan Edwards vs Blake Corum. Offensive line performance after shuffling people around - there is some room for improvement. Did the offensive line have a revolt against Cade when they gave up those sacks?? (No, no they did not). [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Hawaii starts at 35:20 *slaps Seth on the wrist* Not a whole lot to say here. The 3rd string defense was... maybe not great? Rayshaun Benny looked pretty good. Michael Barrett was an insider linebacker which you probably don't want to do against Wisconsin (who Michigan doesn't play anyways). RJ Moten just needs to catch one. Amorion Walker on offense and defense? Did Rayshaun Benny bring back the belly rub?? 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 51:43 Takes hotter than JJ McCarthy on Saturday night (there it is). Dave vs The Voice, find out what happens. Is it a sad field goal if you're Hawaii? Shouldn't Hawaii be getting a lot of great transfers? Because how awesome would it be to just live in Hawaii for four years (like their kicker/punter). AJ Henning punt return discussion - has some good returns, might've made a couple iffy decisions. No field goals but Jake Moody had a kickoff field goal. Brad Robbins punts it to the moon. Michigan scored touchdowns from within the red zone! 4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:13:39 10-7 is the perfect ¡El Assico! score. Kirk Ferentz, why have you not fired your son? Iowa blocked two punts and scored seven points?? Could this maybe be the beginning of the end of Kirk Ferentz? Georgia Southern put up 642(!!!) yards against Nebraska!? Both of these teams went 3-9 last season. Scott Frost was fired just after the recording of this podcast so that is not discussed. Coming into this game, Nebraska was 214-0 when scoring 35 or more points at home. Now they are 214-1. Wisconsin outgains Wazzu 401-253 but loses... This is not good Washington State either. Northwestern can't complete a 21-0 deficit in a 31-23 loss to Duke. Is Illinois... the best looking team in the West right now? Every other Big Ten game was a blowout. Offense vs Colorado State starts at 1:00 Should JJ McCarthy be the God Emperor of Michigan Football? Ok maybe, but let's Devil's Advocate it first. We were told that Cade made a major step-up in the offseason and he didn't... look like it. It feels like JJ time but then also why was the QB battle 50/50? Alan Bowman looked fine? CAT ORJI. Injuries on the offensive line, backups have some things that can get fixed. Not much to say about the wide receivers since they all only caught one pass but the blocking was really nice. Roman Wilson's touchdown run happened because of Ronnie Bell's block. No procedural penalties and also they were checking the sidelines with plenty of time on the play clock. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Colorado State starts at 35:52 The headline is... edge rushers?? Might be several weeks before we can tell just how good they actually are but they did everything we could ask them to do. Derrick Moore was recruited as speed off the edge and if he ever learns a move, watch out -- it looks like he might've learned a move. There were plural 4th down sacks... Braiden McGregor was not as effective. Offseason concern was that nobody was separating themselves at edge rusher and now maybe that was because there was actually depth. Everyone has passed the Taylor Upshaw line. Defensive tackle looked dominant and did things that were encouragingly independent of the opponent. Brian is the Mazi Smith Guy. Junior Colson seemed to play almost every snap. Kalel Mullings is a weird case of playing a lot of snaps on both sides of the ball - if you really need him to fill linebacker depth why are you risking him at running back? Cornerbacks, not much action other than Will Johnson got beat over the top. Good job, Rod Moore, for catching a ball that landed right in your chest. Michigan had a plan for tempo! 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 1:07:57 Takes so hot that they're several hundred degrees cooler than Brian was at noon in the stands at the game and he had a pop and he spilled it and AGH. Not a whole lot to talk about, Michigan's special teams players are from around 1860 and they're all great. AJ Henning punt return decision discourse. That poor Colorado State punter. Brad Robbins kicks the ball insanely high. BRAD ROBBINS MUSTACHE. Only one kick return, Brian wants the old kickoff rules back. 4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:33:05 Iowa 7, South Dakota State 3 in a game with NO TOUCHDOWNS. 21 punts, 16 first downs! 166 total yards against an FCS team! Spencer Petras has scored the lowest QB Rating in a win since 2013 at 1.1. Penn State cannot run the ball (they have not had a 100 yard rusher in 17 games). Sean Clifford took a pretty bad hit to the knee. Rutgers finally gets a victory over Boston College in 11 tries. They have an ok running game, they do not have a passing game. Rutgers had 1st and goal at the 9 and ended up punting on 4th and goal from the 43 (but hey they pinned it down to the 1). You would be SHOCKED to hear that a Scott Frost team blew an 11 point lead (in BOTH halves). Nebraska gave up 527 yards to Northwestern. Now the Irish think Northwestern is an offensive powerhouse. Michigan State might miss Kenneth Walker this year. Western Michigan even had the ball down 8 at one point in the 4th quarter. CJ Stroud looked surprisingly shaky, the offensive line didn't look like the greatest. MUSIC: "The Great Suburban Showdown"--Billy Joel "Car Wash"--Rose Royce "The Good Stuff"--Ben Lee “Across 110th Street”

Free episode: 1. Defensive Line starts at 1:00 Despite Chris Hinton's departure, defensive tackle looks like a solid group! Mazi Smith was named the number one freak in the country by Bruce Feldman (in a good way). Is Mazi Smith finally happening this year? It might finally be happening this year, but he's definitely the biggest X-factor on the defense. Former MGoBlog Sleeper of the Year, Kris Jenkins, looks to be rounded into a Ryan Glasgow type. The depth takes a bit of a drop after these two. Consensus seems to be that Jim Harbaugh's "gift from the football gods" comment was referring to Kenneth Grant. Brian wants Alex to get older. George Rooks looks encouraging down the road. Jim Harbaugh says the defensive ends won't see much drop-off and might even be just as good - worst offseason lie we've ever heard? We feel good about Mike Morris, who should be a B+/A- player. After that, ehhh. Taylor Upshaw might be ok, Braiden McGregor hasn't been talked about much in camp. TJ Guy is a guy. Derrick Moore could be great but is a true freshman. Julius Welschof could be an X-factor! Brian wants a weakside end that eats peoples' souls and that probably doesn't exist this year. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] --------------------- 2. Hot Takes and Linebackers starts at 31:20 Takes hotter than whatever is going on in the capillaries in Brian's face from having to record all the hot takes segments at once. Linebackers are in a similar boat as defensive tackle - two guys coming on that you feel good about and then a pretty stiff drop-off. Junior Colson and Nikhai Hill-Green's development this season will be crucial for this defense, Josh Ross isn't around to solve your problems anymore. Junior Colson runs fast, sometimes in the right direction. Next man up is Michael Barrett, who is not an inside linebacker. Maybe they give Jaydon Hood a chance? The freshmen probably won't contribute much this year. Maybe they Ravens it and run one linebacker- wait they did that against Michigan State, never mind. 3. Secondary starts at 54:21 Last year's secondary intro was "oh god oh no" (and it ended up being fine), this year feels much better! DJ Turner is the 4th Michigan player to make Feldman's Freaks list and was on a 3rd team All American list. Gemon Green has never performed at the highest level but has shown flashes. He's a decent to good Big Ten corner but the ball always goes through his hands, this is a good floor at cornerback. Enter Will Johnson: a true freshman who will absolutely see the field. Moving a starter from receiver to cornerback usually is a bad sign, but I think we feel... fine? About Mike Sainristil? He played offense and defense in high school and has the athleticism for the position so he might be decent in the new role. Those are probably the four corners that will get significant snaps, we probably won't see much of Jaylen Perry. At safety, are we sure Brad Hawkins doesn't have another year of eligibility? RJ Moten and Rod Moore will likely be the starters. They held their own in the snaps they played last season, including against Ohio State. The rest of the depth chart looks ok if they need to step up. There's been positive chatter about Quinten Johnson? Seth is high on Damani Dent. 4. Special Teams and Defense in Summary starts at 1:21:06 Special Teams: same as last year, the end. Jake Moody, Brad Robbins, AJ Henning, and Blake Corum are back. Also Ronnie Bell is back to return punts (/TweekACK). Shout outs to Jay Harbaugh for being the best special teams coach in the country and Cornelius Johnson for blocking two punts. Best special teams unit in the country? What would Nebraska's record be last year if they had Michigan's special teams? Overall defense feels rickety, there are maybe four or five spots that having to rely on backups would be bad. If you were starting a defense from scratch, starting with two good defensive tackles and good cornerbacks is a good start. Expectation for the defense is around top 20-30. Too many commercials, it was cold, and they played the Applebee's song. Haskins Hurdling a Fool count is up to five. Injuries compromised the offensive gameplan a bit. There was a literal line of players trying to get into the injury tent. Cade only had 18 pass attempts, JJ has another yakity-sax play, Brian apologizes for trying to sing Yakity-Sax but sang Calliope instead. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense starts at 26:40 Defense - great performance against not great offense. Zero sacks from Hutchinson due to being doubled and held. Ojabo continues to be a freak of nature. Junior Colson is developing nicely. Some key Indiana players getting injured makes the defensive performance even murkier to grade. Nine games in and still not much to be said about the cornerbacks. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 40:44 Takes so hot they're the inverse of how we all felt for 3 unnecessary hours in a November night game. Editor's note: I was not prepared for Seth's take. The entire state of Indiana, minus West Lafayette, should not exist at night. DJ Turner fills in for AJ Henning on punt returns, proceeds to get two kick catch interferences on a single play. Brad Robbins is secretly good but nobody really talks about it. Tweet about Brad Robbins, get a like. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 58:26 Purdue beats Michigan State with a play from Tecmo Bowl! Brohm claims to have stolen if from a YouTube video of a high school team years ago. Purdue now in a four-way tie with Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa for the Big Ten West. Does Ohio State look beatable or was this a one-off bad game (spoiler: it's the less fun answer). Nebraska is 1-6 in Big Ten play and outscoring their Big Ten opponents. If you're Nebraska... it... still kind of... makes sense to keep Scott Frost? Iowa and Northwestern in the Battle of Backup Quarterbacks. Seven punts in a row to start the game sounds about right. This podcast team was never fooled by Iowa's top five ranking. Brian demands a Grover Bortolotti on Michigan's team. Brandon Peters: 7-of-9 for 80 yards for a win over the number 20 team in the country! Shout out to the Illinois punter for rowing the boat three times and then snapping the paddle. MUSIC: "Meet Me at Our Spot"--The Anxiety "Dennehy"--Serengeti "Crutch"--Band of Horses “Across 110th Street”
Even though Michigan is favored by a massive 23.5 points, it's hard to figure out exactly how the game against Northwestern will look. Pat Fitzgerald always has his teams ready and Jim Harbaugh correctly said that the Wildcats are always better in the middle and later part of the season than they are at the beginning. Throw in the fact that Michigan has won four of its last five matchups against Northwestern by an average of just 4.75 points, and you start to really wonder how much Michigan can win by. While trying to figure out how the game will look, it's fun to get into the actual stats of the game. How many times will Cade McNamara throw it? How well will Michigan be able to run the ball against Northwestern's porous defense? How often will we see Brad Robbins and Jake Moody? Those kinds of things will determine how the game looks, even though most people expect a win for the Wolverines. We also get into some of the other games around the Big Ten and the country. All of that and more on this episode of The Wolverine Digest Podcast.
Michigan Punter Brad Robbins joins the show to talk bye week, improved team energy going into the 2nd half of the season, a very special cause he is raising money for and much more. Crack a cold one and enjoy the show.

Offense vs Rutgers starts at 1:00 Signs in the first drive, great play-action and RPOs on the second drive, then they ran out of ideas and kept running into stacked boxes like they'd never scouted this team and what they do. RBs are going to come in for some minuses. Vastardis got roasted by the slanting nose. DID NOT TEST THE EDGES VS THOSE INSANE SAFETIES UNTIL 5 MINUTES LEFT WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Rutgers starts at 21:05 Also not great. Rutgers ran a lot of college stuff, Michigan ran out a lot of DTs, Hutchinson was rampant, refs were unkind to us here and both teams on deep passes. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 35:25 The Sklars join us for the Hot Takes segment. Brad Robbins is not Jesus (in case you were wondering). Moody missed a field goal, RU missed too. Lots in the Game Theory segment, starting with Rutgers going for it at the end of the half on 4th and 10. And then Michigan not running a play with 5 seconds left. And lots more. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 56:22 How long can we spend on Minnesota-Bowling Green? Long enough to name every Carr assistant and player, and not long enough to get to the implications for teams who may have been losing to Minnesota in the 4th quarter this year. This episode was supposed to be recorded at Prentice 4M, on the other end of The Bridge, started by a couple of readers to have the perfect, affordable, safe, and clean living/renting/working space near campus. 1. Offense vs WMU starts at 1:00 Do we start with the good news (they can run), the bad news (Bell), or the future news (McCarthy). #SpeedInSpace is over—there were no reads and lots of fake reads that burned downs or delivered safeties and linebackers to the running backs immediately. In this game at least the RBs could put those defenders on their asses. JJ seems to be erratic. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs WMU starts at 28:58 One drive of bleeding plus a Not Angry About That throw over Gemon Green (and a taunting on Ojabo) and then not much. Just a few gashes from LBs getting out of position. Hinton looked like their best DT, Hutchinson got to spend a lot of time on the sideline while they rotated a lot of guys. Mike Morris, hello there. Secondary looked okay but shaky—they're better as a zone team. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 44:45 The hot takes are half the segment even though there was a lot of special teams, because the only game theory stuff was at the end of the 1st half (learn to manage a clock!). Much of the game was spent waiting around for Brad Robbins punts to land. Using Bell as a returner. Foug'ing it. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:00:35 We go long this time of year because there are so many games. Jamie does not recognize the existence of Iowa.
