On this week's Stansberry Investor Hour, Dan and Corey welcome their colleague Mike Barrett back to the show. Mike is editor of Select Value Opportunities and senior analyst of Extreme Value. He joins the podcast to talk extensively about valuations, why you should never pay too much for a stock, and the opportunities he sees in the market today. Mike kicks off the episode by giving updates on his pecan plantation and his weekly Select Value Opportunities newsletter. He explains that this service helps subscribers beat the market while taking on less risk. The portfolio has returned about 14.5% since inception and has outperformed its benchmark for nearly 80 straight weeks. Mike's secret to outperformance is his system... It focuses on valuations and gives daily rankings of 100 well- known stocks. That way, subscribers can enter positions at an ideal moment. Mike emphasizes the importance of valuation and reminds listeners that it's a metric for future performance. (1:34) Next, Mike analyzes the differences between valuing stocks in public markets and his past experience with valuing real estate in private markets. Plus, he talks more about momentum being another important factor in picking stocks and how valuations have changed in recent times. As Mike explains, the first year he started his service, only 5% of stocks were overvalued. Now, in the past year, 30% are. This is "unprecedented" and a "warning sign" that investors should be aware of. Still, Mike's system can help prevent huge losses. (19:28) Finally, Mike gives his opinion on the overall market action and the broader economic picture. He brings up market cycles, his belief that unemployment is about to be a big issue, and factors that will lead gold and silver prices higher from here. He points out that there are fewer higher-paying jobs available now and that most growth has been in lower-paying jobs. This is skewing the jobs data. And he also discusses the importance of the housing sector when it comes to inflation. (37:27)

Embark on a celestial journey with today's episode of Astronomy Daily - The Podcast, where your host, Anna, brings you the latest cosmic updates. We'll delve into Voyager One's latest achievements as it resumes its science operations after a technical glitch. We'll also discuss the recent spacewalk cancellation on the International Space Station due to a spacesuit discomfort issue. And don't miss out on the new findings from NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars, which has just reached a new area of scientific interest. Stay tuned for these stories and much more.NASA's Voyager One has fully resumed its science operations after resolving a technical issue that had been affecting its capabilities since November 2023. This remarkable spacecraft, now over 15 billion miles from Earth, is once again collecting crucial data from its four science instruments, providing invaluable insights into the nature of interstellar space. After a series of careful diagnostics and repairs, the mission team successfully restored the instruments to their full operational modes. Engineers will continue to perform minor maintenance tasks, including resynchronizing the timekeeping software and maintaining the digital tape recorder that stores data for the plasma wave instrument. As Voyager One continues its journey, it remains one of NASA's most historic missions, shedding light on the mysteries of space far beyond our solar system.A spacesuit discomfort issue forced NASA to cancel a planned spacewalk on the International Space Station today. The spacewalk, set to be a routine six-hour mission involving astronauts Tracy C. Dyson and Matt Dominick, was aimed at conducting necessary repairs and science experiments. However, as the astronauts were preparing for their trek outside the station, NASA astronaut Mike Barrett requested a private line to talk to flight controllers about an unspecified medical issue, leading to the mission's cancellation. Despite the setback, NASA assured the public that there was no emergency, and the mission will be rescheduled. After an arduous journey, NASA's Perseverance rover has reached a new area of scientific interest on Mars, dubbed Bright Angel. The rover navigated through a challenging dune field to avoid boulder-filled terrain, leading it to an ancient river channel full of potential geological treasures. Bright Angel, located at the base of Jezero Crater's northern channel wall, is now being studied for evidence of carbonate and olivine deposits, which could reveal secrets about the ancient river that once flowed into the crater. One particularly intriguing find is Atoko Point, a unique boulder whose composition and origin are currently under investigation.New research suggests that some planets orbiting white dwarfs may retain their water and potentially support life. White dwarfs, with their small size and dim light, provide an excellent backdrop for studying these planets. The study offers a roadmap for finding these elusive worlds and could guide future telescope missions as they search the cosmos for signs of life. The potential for discovering habitable exoplanets around white dwarfs opens up exciting possibilities for understanding planetary systems and life beyond our own solar system.Blue Origin, SpaceX, and United Launch Alliance have secured a monumental $5.6 billion in contracts from the Pentagon for the National Security Space Launch phase three program. This is a significant milestone, especially for Blue Origin, as it's their first time entering the national security launch arena. These contracts, which span over the next five years, will see the companies compete for various crucial launch missions, enhancing competition, driving down costs, and ensuring reliable access to space. In a stunning revelation, the James Webb Space Telescope has discovered that a star long believed to be a single entity, known as WL 20s, is actually a pair of twin stars. Using its mid-infrared instrument, Webb has also detected jets of gas streaming from the north and south poles of these twin stars, adding a new layer of understanding to the processes of stellar formation and evolution. Further observations have shown that each star is encircled by disks of dust and gas, suggesting that planets may be forming within these disks. For an astronomical experience, visit our website at astronomydaily.io for the latest news, sign up for our free newsletter, and check out exclusive sponsor deals.Connect with us on YouTube, TikTok, X, and Facebook via @AstroDailyPod for engaging discussions with fellow space aficionados. Offense vs Indiana Starts at 1:00 The first quarter was annoying but no one was ever worried, it ended up being a transitive property victory over Ohio State! “JJ's incompletions” is once again a short segment. “JJ's sacks” are a more interesting conversation. Credit Indiana's defense for playing smart in this one. The offense scores on eight straight drives and that was that. JJ is elite when he has to go off script, exactly what you need to be a national championship contender. How Michigan football is like watching a ferret get drowned by a psychopath. Should Blake Corum be selling the flea flicker more? There were some run block errors. Is AJ Barner actually the best tight end on the team? Benjamin Hall looked great and is an encouraging replacement for Mullings right now. Apparently Semaj Morgan's nickname is "Jukebox", which, yeah. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Indiana Starts at 48:30 This was annoying for a quarter. Linebackers and defensive ends are still not doing great in drop backs. They're practicing their Ohio State defense every week, might as well practice it against Indiana. There was a receiver running wide open on the first interception. Linebacker play wasn't the greatest, Junior Colson doesn't have all the right instincts. Michigan is trying to develop depth by rotating defensive players a lot, this probably goes away against Michigan State. Mike Barrett is a tremendous blitzer. Mason Graham club hand fumble recovery! Can we get a FB Wheel touchdown to Kenneth Grant next year? Sounds like it's ride or die with Josh Wallace at CB2. Rod Moore played good, hopefully he's back to mid-season form. 3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 1:11:21 Takes hotter than Marcus Freeman after he defenestrated USC. Is Michigan football listening to this podcast?? Tyler Morris should be the go-to punt returner, Semaj Morgan is the go-to kick returner. KYLE, YOU AGAIN? Going for it on 4th and 2 near the endzone felt like the right thing to do. 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:30:11 Rutgers - 27 Michigan State - 24 One of the greatest comebacks in Rutgers football history went mostly unnoticed. Michigan State has Trouble With The Snap. The Situation Trophy is in Piscataway! Michigan State isn't a good team but they always show up for Michigan so Michigan can't have a slow start again. Iowa - 15 Wisconsin - 6 Iowa gains 237 yards, 82 of them on one run. Deacon Hill goes 6/14 for 37 yards. Wisconsin throws the ball 50 times. Iowa has a clear path to the Big Ten title game despite being down a starting QB and their two top tight ends. Their punting is still top notch. Iowa is 10-1 in games where Tory Taylor punts at least 8 times. Illinois - 27 Maryland - 24 We're in the transitive business until it makes us feel bad. Given how Ohio State looked against Maryland, this has to look good for Michigan. Ohio State - 41 Purdue - 7 Purdue, buddy, you can't one-on-one Marvin Harrison. They have Purdue Don Brown as their defensive coordinator. Ohio State might have some concerning depth issues at running back, Trayanum went out with a possible concussion. Cade Stover has stepped up this year. Penn State - 63 UMass - 0 Apparently Penn State just doesn't throw downfield. UMass also got five sacks. Their game against Ohio State might be a rock fight. MUSIC: “Evicted”— Wilco “The Ruminant Band”— Fruit Bats “Catch a Glimpse”— Aaron Ross “Across 110th Street”
The Little Brown Jug will remain in Ann Arbor! Michigan surged past Minnesota for a 52-10 victory on Saturday night, and Jon, Brian, Doug, and Jack break it down to start this episode of In the Trenches, presented by Meijer. Then, we hear from Head Coach Jim Harbaugh (20:00), defensive lineman Mason Graham (24:00), defensive backs Will Johnson (25:00) and Mike Sainristil (26:30), linebacker Mike Barrett (28:30), and offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson (31:00). Offense vs Rutgers Starts at 1:00 Traditionally, this podcast has always started without Lou Holtz, but we challenge him to come here. JJ kept the ball a lot, it felt like Michigan took this game seriously. We're starting to get worried about Donovan Edwards' run game, he's leaving yards on the field. Blake Corum looks like he's all the way back, though, the offensive line will probably grade out well overall. LaDarius Henderson was playing on and off. It feels like we're at the floor at tackle as far as preseason expectations go, we're in game four and don't know who the starters are. JJ's first few throws were questionable or inaccurate, but then he leveled out. When's the last time they threw a tunnel screen? Semaj Morgan looked good but he's small out there. We think the cyan worked? The flea flicker was from Super Tecmo Bowl. Get Trente Jones the ball! The amount of times JJ ran felt about right also, good that he always got out of bounds. Max Bredeson's blocking has been great. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Rutgers Starts at 39:34 Rod Moore lets a 69 yard touchdown get by and then gets benched for a bit, Quentin Johnson came in and looked pretty good again. Rutgers got the edge a couple times. The only other time they were able to move the ball was when Wimsatt was possessed by the ghost of Unstoppable Throw God Trevor Siemian for half a drive. Rutgers couldn't move the ball against the starting defensive line but were able to push the backups around. Linebackers played great, Mike Barrett looked like a fully weaponized middle linebacker. Haussmann had a really good game, Junior Colson is just not making mistakes in the run game. Mike Sainristil absolutely dump trucked Junior Colson during his interception. Everyone thinks the play is dead except Mike Sainristil and Kenneth Grant, who is impossibly fast for his size here. Michigan defeats the number one thing Rutgers had, which was a running back lead block for the quarterback. Rutgers felt like a much more functional football team this year. 3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 1:00:38 Brian's Hot Takes voice was actually just a Ryan Day impression this whole time. Aussie punters are annoying, we don't like it. Thaw needs to get to that ball, someone else should be spotting it. Tommy Doman kicked a punt that still hasn't landed yet. The officials had a day, good thing it was a Ref Day in a game where it didn't matter. The Loveland first down was really bad, they marked a clear 3rd and 1 from Donovan Edwards short, they called a pass interference after a receiver gave up on the route. Why do you hate Michigan, KYLE?! They've been slow out of the huddle and had to call timeouts twice. Kalel Mullings could very well be the starter next year, and maybe even take some carries away from Edwards this season. 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:27:45 Ohio State - 17 Notre Dame - 14 Defensive battle with a lot of drives that end on 4th down. Notre Dame bottles up Ohio State's passing attack and short yardage runs. Sam Hartman throws every possible 4 yard pass en route to 175 yards. The ending was wild and is discussed. JTT and Sawyer look like they haven't developed at all but Notre Dame has two great tackles. Notre Dame puts 10 guys on the field for the final two plays. The way Ohio State runs this game is how they lose to Michigan. The bad half Ryan Day was referring to was not even the one we were thinking of. The Lou Holtz thing is even funnier in context. Nebraska - 28 Louisiana Tech - 14 Nebraska's QB had more rushing yards than passing yards. They've discarded the forward pass, as God intended. Nebraska has a 330 lbs defensive tackle that wears zero. This next game will be a test for Michigan's rush offense, Nebraska may give Michigan some answers about where they are. Maryland - 31 Michigan State - 9 George Blaha said what?? Michigan State turned it over FIVE times, even though they outgain Maryland. There were some positive signs that they might be able to hang with some of the middle to lower tier big ten teams but we also saw what happened against Washington. It might be a worse sign for Maryland. Penn State - 31 Iowa - 0 Cade McNamara, 5-14 for 42 yards. Iowa's running backs combine for 27 yards. Penn State runs almost 60 more plays. It's about if Kirk Ferentz is getting fired at this point, not just Brian Ferentz. Four first downs to four turnovers, the stats just keep getting worse. Not sure you can extrapolate much from Penn State's defense in this. Penn State ground game was bottled up, passing game seemed fine. Indiana - 29 (4OT) Akron - 27 Indiana's safeties are terrible. Akron outgains Indiana 474-282. Indiana has combined for 8 rushing first downs against three FBS teams this season. Akron is a bad MAC team. Illinois - 23 Florida Atlantic - 17 Illinois outgains FAU 510-353. Still a little skeptical of this Illinois team but they looked a lot better in this game, even got out of a scoring hole. They're not good but they don't seem dire. Northwestern - 37 (OT) Minnesota - 34 Northwestern comes back from a 21 yard deficit and gains 492 yards. AJ Henning has a game tying touchdown. These are the games Minnesota usually takes care of and helps them eek out 8 wins. Doesn't look like that will be the case this year. Wisconsin - 38 Purdue - 17 Tanner Mordecai had 13 rushes that weren't sacks. Wisconsin is probably going to sleepwalk to the division title because nobody else is even trying in the West. MUSIC: “Bug Like An Angel”— Mitski “Rock 'n Roll With Me”— David Bowie “Let's Go Out On The Town”— Cut Worms “Across 110th Street”
We had a fun show on Monday night, as Head Coach Jim Harbaugh joined us at the beginning (with a cameo from junior running back Donovan Edwards). The Michigan State Situation Starts at 1:00 ESPN and USA Today have released articles detailing Mel Tucker's investigation of sexual harassment involving Brenda Tracy. Mel Tucker is turbo fired but legally they need to follow the process and put him on administrative leave for now. An alarming number of Big Ten programs have tried to hide damning reports from the media. When will universities hold themselves accountable for their actions? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Offense vs UNLV Starts at 17:04 Once again, the story is JJ playing out of his mind. The evaluating of his incompletions is, once again, short. Some of his throws are just ridiculous. When the linebackers turn their backs, he sees it and throws behind them. His pocket movement is good enough to give him the extra beat to get a throw off. He even had a couple nice runs. The receivers appear to be reading the coverage and JJ is on the same page as them. The only thing we really haven't seen is a deep ball. UNLV covered the deep and intermediate routes, so JJ just hits Blake Corum for 20 yards. JJ is projecting to be the best Michigan quarterback of our lives. Where is Alex Orji? Jack Tuttle's run looked really nice before he got injured. Jayden Denegal had a nice throw. Tyler Morris has emerged and is a good blocker. The ground game wasn't what you'd like. UNLV did load the box at times but the dive plays are too predictable. They're not rotating the tackles like they said they would. It doesn't look like there's any major issue but there are a bunch of little things. Is there reason to just expect this year's run game to not be the same as last year? Even if that's the case, that's fine because JJ. 3. Hot Takes, Defense, and Special Teams Starts at 1:06:54 Takes hotter than JJ McCarthy, what else is there to say? How upsetting is it that Michigan got the same score as Ohio State? We were all hyped up about the Go-Go offense and then they didn't do anything. The expectations for the defensive line are being met emphatically. Cam Goode is out there making plays. Derrick Moore is moving incredibly for someone that weighs 260 pounds. Who is blocking this defensive line, Purdue? Mike Barrett's ability to locate a swing pass early was fun. No Rod Moore, Will Johnson came in for a series. Keon Sabb played like a promising sophomore. Caden Kolesar shined in this game. Jyaire Hill seems like he's still on track to start by the end of the year. Punt return situation is a bit of a caretaker situation. Tommy Doman is booming his punts. 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:49:33 Iowa - 20 Iowa State - 13 Cade McNamara was 12/22 for 123 yards and an interception. Oof. Defensive touchdowns do count for Brian Ferentz's 25 points per game goal. Colorado - 36 Nebraska - 14 Who has the most career turnovers as a player (fumbles and interceptions). Jeff Sims has to be up there (he's at 37). This game had to be so frustrating for the Nebraska defense. They had eight sacks! Purdue - 24 Virginia Tech - 17 Purdue has a viable run game and destroyed the Virginia Tech run game. It's a road game win against a power five team for the Big Ten! The rain delay in this game was five and a half hours. Purdue spent its time playing spades. Washington State - 31 Wisconsin - 22 Who isn't rooting for Washington State this season, all things considered? Oregon State fans cheered really loud when this score was announced at their stadium. It's depressing that both of these teams will lose almost all the traditions their fans grew up to love. It's a sin against college football for Wisconsin to not be Wisconsin and they are being punished. Ohio State - 35 Youngstown State - 7 Feels like a vintage Ohio State team should score 70 in this game. Notre Dame is looming in two weeks and the Irish are looking pretty good. Kansas - 34 Illinois - 23 Illinois had a defensive collapse, giving up 277 passing yards and allowing two rushers to get 120 and 98 yards. Kansas only punted once. Illinois has Penn State up next, this could be a long year for the Illini. Their dudes at defensive tackle got wrecked. The rest of the games were pretty much blowouts, there aren't really any takes. Besides Biff Poggi's arms. MUSIC: “Bloodless”— Andrew Bird “Valentine”— Drugdealer “Psychos”— Jenny Lewis “Across 110th Street”
