NFL – Damar Hamlin asked who won Bills-Bengals when he woke up Damar Hamlin’s doctors say the Buffalo Bills safety has begun to communicate in writing with his family and others who have been at his bedside since going into cardiac arrest Monday — and his first question was “did we win?” Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said in a conference call with reporters that Hamlin remains critically ill and in the hospital's intensive care unit. But they say it appears his neurological function is intact, meaning he can follow commands and move. The developments come as the Bills return to practice for the first time since Hamlin collapsed during the first quarter of Buffalo's game against the Bengals. NFL – NFL: Bills-Bengals won’t resume; playoff scenarios revealed The NFL won’t resume the Bills-Bengals game that was suspended Monday night after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed and went into cardiac arrest on the field. The league announced its decision on Thursday. The NFL said its decision creates “potential competitive inequities in certain playoff scenarios.” The league said clubs on Friday, in a special league meeting, would consider a resolution recommended by the commissioner and approved Thursday by the Competition Committee. The Bills-Bengals game had major playoff implications. Buffalo entered Monday night needing a win to maintain the AFC's No. 1 seed. The Kansas City Chiefs currently hold that spot. The Bengals had a chance to earn that top seed with two more wins and a loss by the Chiefs. NFL – National Football League – Week 18 (Final Week of the regular season) Sunday Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears, 1:00 p.m. Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts, 1:00 p.m. Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers, 8:20 p.m. Rock 107 WIRX 7:15 NFL – Late-season runs raise stakes for Lions-Packers matchup The Green Bay Packers know they reach the postseason if they win Sunday night. The Detroit Lions' playoff prospects are a little more complicated. Detroit can reach the playoffs by beating the Packers only if Seattle loses to the LA Rams earlier in the day. A Seahawks victory would eliminate Detroit. The Lions insist they'll still have plenty of incentive to beat their NFC North rivals even if it has no impact on their own postseason fortunes. The Lions have won seven of their last nine games and are coming off a 41-10 blowout of Chicago. Detroit already has come a long way after going 3-13-1 last year in Coach Dan Campbell's debut season. The Lions are seeking their first playoff berth since 2016 and have a chance to end a run of four straight losing seasons. At least five players experienced a heart-related issue in the NHL over the past 25 years. All of them collapsed during games. All of them survived including Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer. The NHL has updated its policies and required more robust medical support at games. Experts say that’s key and adjustments should continue to make sure medical staffs and teams are always prepared. Joe Dumars Court will be unveiled Thursday on “Joe Dumars Day.” The Detroit Pistons chose Dumars with the 18th pick in the 1985 NBA draft. He spent his entire NBA playing career with the Pistons, becoming an All-Star six times and winning two titles. Hartman, a three-year starter at Wake Forest, was widely regarded as the top quarterback in the transfer portal. He announced his decision Thursday by tweeting pictures of himself in a Notre Dame uniform. The 23-year-old Hartman holds the Atlantic Coast Conference record for passing touchdowns with 110. He has one year of eligibility remaining. Hartman completed a career-best 63.1% of his passes this past season for 3,701 yards with 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. NCAAFB – Harbaugh: ‘I expect’ to be back at Michigan next season Jim Harbaugh says he expects to coach Michigan's football team next season. He has posted a statement on the team's social media accounts following reports of his interest in returning to the NFL. A person familiar with the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity has said Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper had a conversation with Harbaugh about the team's head coaching position. Harbaugh also has been mentioned as a possible candidate to coach in Denver and Indianapolis. Michigan is also awaiting word from the NCAA on an investigation into the football program regarding impermissible texts and calls to high school prospects during part of a COVID-19 dead period, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday. NCAAFB – Michigan State football player pleads guilty to misdemeanors A Michigan State football player has pleaded guilty to misdemeanors for a skirmish inside the Michigan Stadium tunnel after a game in October. As part of a plea deal, a felony charge against Khary Crump was dropped on Thursday. His record will be scrubbed clean if he stays out of trouble while on probation. Crump was one of seven Michigan State players facing charges but the only one tagged with a felony. Scuffles broke out in the tunnel after Michigan defeated the Spartans on Oct. 29. Crump in one video appeared to swing his helmet at a Michigan player. His attorney said a letter of apology to Gemon Green was part of the deal. Crump was suspended by Michigan State. There's nothing like watching your favorite sports team live and in-person. The roar of the crowd. The smell of the concession stand. The suspense of the game clock winding down to its final seconds. But would you have guessed that behind every ticket purchase, box of cracker jacks, and Jumbotron moment, there are teams of data professionals working to make your fan experience even more seamless and engaging?Joining Cindi today to discuss the data and analytics powering our favorite sports events are Jay Riola, the SVP of Strategy & Innovation for the Orlando Magic, and Charlie Shin, the VP of Data Strategy and Analytics for the Indianapolis Colts. With perspectives from both the NBA and the NFL, Jay and Charlie explore the evolution of mobile ticketing, challenges with identity management, the importance of building fan trust, and the most surprising insights they've ever discovered within their data. Key TakeawaysCustomers expect more for their data: When customers share their data, they expect something in return. Respecting their privacy and keeping their data safe are the bare minimum. They expect real, tangible value. As a business, your responsibility is to use this data to enhance their experience. Whether that be through custom offers, more relevant content recommendations, or more seamless purchasing experiences, what matters most is that you're delivering on the expectation of value.Collecting data is one thing, putting it together is another: While technologies like mobile payments and social media have made it easier for businesses to collect data, they've also added complexity to the process of building accurate customer profiles. To truly understand the person on the other side of the screen, you must have the right skills and infrastructure to bring all that data together. Great data scientists need to be a triple threat: It is no longer enough to be very good at the technical components of your job and “so-so” at translating insights into actionable recommendations for business stakeholders. The best data scientists have technical chops, a deep understanding of how their business works, and the storytelling skills to turn insights into influence.Key QuotesCharlie:“In sports, they started off by focusing on the product, which is the on-field performance, our players. So a lot of the emphasis was using datas to optimize their investments, enhance their quality of on-field performance. But as the competition grew… now we've seen a shift where the focus is more on the customers and their experience in addition to the on-field quality.”“Identity management is a key topic in sports at this point… We have a variety of different data sources, whether it's ticketing, merchandising, digital engagement, or website or apps, there's a lot of information that's coming through. And then we're trying to figure out how do we tie all this together so that we have that clear understanding of that single view of our customers across these touchpoints. And I don't think this is just a sports industry challenge, right? I think it's a challenge across all industries that manage consumer information.”Jay:“We were a pretty early adopter of variable ticket pricing and thinking about the value from a ticket perspective of our games differently based on the team that we were playing, the time of the year, whether it was early in the season versus later in the season, obviously weekday versus weekend, but just recognizing that the marketplace values these games differently and so should we... Then it became, how do we dynamically price our tickets? How are we changing pricing as we approach games to reflect the demand situation that we have or if an opponent is performing better or worse than we expected, and we can raise or lower pricing. I think where data is really helping guide us… is product development and thinking about ticketing in new and kind of transformational ways.”“We have seen significant growth in ticketing revenue and improvement in retention of fans, as we've introduced this more sophisticated way of thinking about pricing and sales to our business. And I would venture to guess that most teams that have implemented this are seeing returns as well in terms of revenue growth and also total ticket sold.”“We are fortunate to work in an industry where fans are more willing to share their data with us… But I do think that the same expectations do come along, which is I'm giving you something and in return, there's an expectation, obviously that you will protect my data and store it safely… but also that now you're going to enrich my experience with you somehow… I think it's kind of shifting responsibility to companies to be far more active in how they think about not just security and data management, but returning value on that expectation that will come from your fans and your consumers.”About CharlieCharlie Shin is a highly analytical customer strategy and marketing executive with global and domestic experience in data analytics, strategic planning, project management, customer segmentation, customer relationship management, and KPI management. Justin is off in Tampa this week, so Kevin is joined by Lakeland Magic play by play voice, and WDBO host Nick Gryniewicz (@GetNickG). Today on The Anthony Gargano Show, Anthony is back and opens up the show with his concern for the Philadelphia Eagles. Anthony feels that he hasn’t been this disinterested with an Eagles team since the pre-Andy Reid era. Between his lack of confidence in Nick Sirianni, Jeffrey Lurie, and Jalen Hurts he feels the Eagles are in trouble in both the short term and long term (0:00-46:17). The guys then get to Morning Thoughts, where both Anthony and Andrew can’t get over how excited they are that it’s 70 degrees out today. However, with this great weather, that means the birds start chirping at 5am and the crickets are out by 6pm. Anthony and Andrew debate on which one is more irritating. ESPN's Kevin Negandhi joins the Cuz and agrees with him that there is very little interest or buzz surrounding this Eagles team. Kevin expresses his concern that he has no idea what to expect from this new coaching staff or the front office (46:17-1:32:19). The show then reminisces on the one year anniversary of the Sixers game getting cancelled, before the NBA shut down as a whole. Delaware Blue Coats’ president Larry Meli then joins the show to discuss the Blue Coats’ G League Championship Game against the Lakeland Magic (1:32:19-2:14:12). The show gets into the NHL’s new 7 year $2.8 billion deal with ESPN and then goes to the phones to finish it out (2:14:12-2:58:12). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As cardboard cutouts occupy the stands at stadiums across the country, sports leagues and teams are dealing with a massive blow to their bottom line. If fans are stuck watching the game from home, it begs the question... how long can sports really be financially viable? Can exclusive, virtual experiences fill the budgetary void left by the absence of ticket sales? Or can the leagues just shoulder the economic consequences until stadiums and arenas are back at full capacity? Featured Guests Brian Wright - General Manager, San Antonio Spurs Shelly Wilkes - Senior Vice President, Orlando Magic Jon Alba - Sports Reporter/Anchor, Spectrum Sports - News 13 Episode Highlights 2:00 - What's missing from sports in the pandemic 4:27 - The media landscape for sports in 2020 5:56 - How the NBA is doing during COVID-19 7:16 - What the future could hold for sports 9:54 - A new model for sports monetization 13:01 - Media owned sports leagues? 19:50 - Will there be fans in the building next season? 26:23 - Final thoughts from the panel 30:06 - Dean Jarley's final thoughts Episode Transcription Jon Alba: The pitcher for the Washington Nationals just knocked this out of the park when he said that sports are like the reward of a functioning society. Jon Alba: [crosstalk 00:00:08]. Jon Alba: Mr President. Paul Jarley: If you watched the presidential debate like I did, you might think, well, we don't deserve sports at all. This show is all about separating height from fundamental change. I'm Paul Jarley, Dean of the College of Business here at UCF. I've got lots of questions. To get answers, I'm talking to people with interesting insights into the future of business. Have you ever wondered, is this really a thing? Onto our show. Paul Jarley: Life, for me, had a glimmer of normalcy with this. Paul Jarley: First, it was Korean baseball. Then it was MLS, followed by the NHL, and the NBA. They all started in bubbles. Major League Baseball returned to play in their regular venues, but all these restarts were missing one thing, spectators. The seats were empty. We've seen some baby steps towards the return of paying customers and seats in football but the question remains, how long can sports really be a thing if the stadiums are, well, mostly empty? Paul Jarley: Luckily, I know people on the inside who can help us understand what's going on in sports today. How long this disruption might last and how sports might look different going forward. Listen in. Paul Jarley: Is the current arrangement sustainable financially? How long can the leagues operate without spectators before this becomes a real financial problem? Shelly Wilkes: Well, I can jump in. Paul Jarley: Shelly Wilkes is a graduate of the DeVos Sports Business Management Program here in the college, and was the president of the Lakeland Magic. Now, she's a senior VP for the parent club, the Orlando Magic. Shelly Wilkes: I think this is not really sustainable. I don't think it's sustainable from a society standpoint or a team ownership standpoint. I think that we, as sports leagues, really bring fans together, we bring communities together that's really what we build our businesses upon, is how do we bring a group of people together to cheer for one common cause. I think that in the short term, everyone understands where we are as a country, where we are as a world with the pandemic. We're making changes and sacrifices where necessary so that we can continue the game on the field or on the courts. I think everyone wants sports to come back in its entirety. We want to have arenas full. Shelly Wilkes: I mean,
