3 men. 100 episodes. 247 movies. Innumerable hand-farts. IN A WORLD…where movie theaters closed their doors during a worldwide pandemic, three best friends decided to hop into their mental DeLoreans, go back in time to talk about movies & opening weekends from the last 40 years, and bask in the buttery glow of nostalgia. Three and half years later they arrive at their 100th and final trip back in time…twice! First, the boys head AAALLL the way back to where it all started: early summer of 1977, and William Friedkin's Star Wars squashed thriller, SORCERER. And then, in a space/time continuum-shaking rift, they jump forward to 2015 and the last time all three of them were in a movie theatre together, screaming their heads off like John Boyega, watching STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. And finally, the boys raise a glass to some MORE nostalgia with the Fourth Annual Golden Sheila Awards ©. PLUS a final visit from The Arthropod Squad and Gene Gene the Punning Machine: Mr. Shalit, himself. ALL the feels and ALL the farts on EPISODE 100 of OPENING WEEKEND!

Show Notes Episode 402: Gene Gene the Dancing MACHINE This week Host Dave Bledsoe plops a brown paper bag over his head and tries to pass himself off as the unknown drunkard. (The bartender gonged him out of the bar. Again.) On the show this week we are talking about one of the most influential TV shows of all time. (For certain Gen X podcast hosts anyway): The Gong Show. Along the way we discover that Dave was not always the small, apathetic slacker he is now, he once had dreams. (Small, apathetic slacker dreams) Then we dive right into the creation of a talent show panel game show that broke barriers in the mid 1970's. (Admittedly the barriers were to good taste and decency.) We follow the show's inception as a fairly banal talent show into the pop culture phenomena that explains why large brass gongs are featured in every low rent talent show in America. (Talent shows are the largest single sales driver in the large brass gong market, after Nights in White Satin and Bohemian Rhapsody.) We talk about the secret ingredient that made the show click with TV audiences (raunchy humor) and why it eventually was kicked off daytime television. (raunchy humor and Jaye P Morgan's lovely breasts.) Finally, we wrestle with the complicated legacy of the show today. Also, Gene Gene the Dancing Machine! Our Sponsor this week is the St. Cyril & Methodius Roman Catholic Church of Boonton NJ annual Talent Night open audition call for the 36th largest Catholic talent show in northeastern New Jersey. In this episode of Breaking Goodman we are discussing season 6 episode 10 titled “Nippy.” After getting teased with just bits of the Gene timeline for the better part of 6 seasons, we finally get our first full story with the 3rd iteration of Jimmy McGill. We see that old habits die hard as Gene taps into his past Slippin Jimmy and Saul Goodman ways as a means to get Jeffy the Cab Driver off his back. The episode centers around a department store heist and involves lots and lots of cinnamon buns, a training course, and the legendary Carol Burnett. Rags-to-riches author and CEO Gene Rice and his high school English teacher daughter Courtney Bejgrowicz, share critical information alongside professional and personal successes and failures to demystify adulthood. They are the co-authors of the book “Grad to Grown-Up” which teaches everything you didn't learn in school but all you need to know to launch your personal and professional life. The five sections—life, job search, career, personal finance, and health and relationships—provide real-world insights that are often overlooked in formal education. GENE RICE is a leading executive retained recruiter, placing over 1000 executives while building one of the largest search firms in the world. He is also chairman of Rice Cohen International, and co-founder of the Plant a Seed Inspire a Dream Foundation, which has helped over 700 children pursue their passions. He brings a desire to help others to all he does. Introducing Gene Rice What problem do you solve? How do you create great professional success? What three problems do you solve? He will share three things that help lead to a long-term fit between a company and a candidate. He will give questions that will quickly help determine if someone is a fit. He will share simple tips that can be incorporated into the company that may change the culture and help change profits. Show Notes: There are three things to look for when trying to find a long term hire: Any candidate that joins a corporation should feel they can add value to it. A year after joining, new hires should be able to step back and examine the multiple ways that they have grown professionally. New hires need to respect and like the people they work with. If they don't have a rapport with their boss, they will be unhappy and will leave. If you're doing a behavior-based interview, you have to connect with your interviewee. You want someone to feel that you care about them upfront. Be upfront when you schedule an interview. What got you intrigued to talk to us? Gene asks potential hires several things: I really want to understand your background. When were you the happiest professional and what was happening to make that so? What do you enjoy most about your current position at your current company? If you were the CEO of your current company, what would you change about it? If I were to give you a magic wand to create your ideal company and job for yourself, what would you create? What would the culture be like? What questions do you still need to have addressed to make sure this is a good fit for the both of us? Help your staff and help your company create purpose. They want a greater purpose. The first of every month Gene does a month-end review. He reviews the five goals that an employee has set and managed. It's important to recognize employees for the things that they did well that month. A month-end review lets businesses keep in touch with their people. Gene tries to positively impact as many people as possible every day. Bring in interns to your business. At the end of an eight-week program, you'll know if you want to hire any of them. For interns, they should ask themselves if they can see themselves doing this and staying happy doing this once they have finished their eight weeks. If you go out of your way to reach out to people, they will want to go out to lunch with you and vouch for you. Support your kids' passions. Help them find how to create a career from what they love. Gene's book has 68 tips that covers areas of life, interviewing, health, relationships, and personal finances. In this week's ball-losing episode, Magnus concludes It's All About Image, a megaseries about few Image titles from the 1990's. In perhaps better terms, it's an opportunity to maybe change your opinion of a handful of Image comics. Or at least it has the potential. Possibly. The curtain rises on Supreme #41 this week, which marked the beginning of Alan Moore's run on the title. What's good? What's bad? What's typical freaking Alan Moore? Quite a lot of all three, in fact. But no matter what, there's only one way to find out for sure! (pssst, that's your cue to download the show) For those of you determined to soil the Internet by sharing click-bait, "Magnus starts the episode by talking about *WHAT* movie?!" There's also a long shoutout to Gene "Gene the Podcasting Machine" Hendricks in the cold open. So lots of fun all around, yes? Due to the deluge of ass-kickery this week, unfortunately there just wasn't time for listener feedback this week. But don't cry about it because there's more coming in the future! Patience! The vast backlog of feedback will be addressed in due time. Fear not! In the meantime, though, don't let the lack of feedback this time get you down! You can still offer your feeble effort at tribute! You humble serfs are always welcome to kiss your benevolent leader's ring. Corrupt DiManzocorp interns are ready, willing, able and eager to accept your bribe to present your meager missives to your wise emperor. The email address to use is trentusmagnus@gmail.com as the other seems to be having technical problems. In an another sublime act of truly unprecedented charity, your emperor permits you lowly rabble to suggest topics for a future episode. Thus, petitions may be sent to trentusmagnus@gmail.com for DiManzocorp interns to review, whereupon your leader might consider thinking about the possibility of potentially discussing whatever you have in mind some day. And that's a promise!

-- In this week's ball-pummeling episode, the Extinction Level Event reaches its conclusion. But the nearly-year of uninterrupted miniseries dedicated to one specific theme, topic, character, idea, nose-berry or storyline continues! This week the spotlight falls on Marvel's Fear Itself storyline. The stakes haven't been this high for at least a couple of months! This time the property values of Broxton, Oklahoma are at stake while these marvels of heroism struggle like hell to turn back a band of really torqued off supervillains with supernatural weapons. BUT!! WILL WILL THEY SUCCEED??! The discussion this week finds Magnus and Gene Gene "the Podcasting Machine" Hendricks from the Hammer Podcast mull over the proceedings with their characteristic cool and calm demeanors. Yes indeed, art is painstakingly analyzed, character dynamics are carefully reviewed, inspirational myths are compared and a wonderful time is had by all. The co-hosts also find time to question this story's entire reason for being. Is that enough hype yet? If not, and for those among you determined to destroy true creativity online by constantly giving in to click-bait marketing tactics, "You won't believe what Hendricks says about religion!" Because of the epic splendor wrought by your emperor and his loyal podcasting vassal, there's just no time for feedback this week. This time out on LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST Producer Paul, Awesome Andy, Sufficient Shawn, and Gene "Gene the Podcasting Machine" take a look at the first season episode "Dramatis Personae". In a wonderful bit of synergy (read that "he demanded he be included on the show"), Gene "Gene the Podcasting Machine" Hendricks joins Producer Paul Spataro, Awesome Andy Leyland, and Satisfactory Shawn Engel for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode...The Forsaken. When some rather obnoxious Starfleet dignitaries visit the station, Commander Sisko rightly assigns them to be tended to by Dr. Bashir, but even the good doctor can't control the lustful passions of Lwaxanna Troi, who gets all tingly in her lady bits for the resident shapeshifter, Constable Odo. But does the inclusion of the mother of Next Generation's most derided counselor into a Deep Space Nine episode drag the show down? You might be surprised to hear what we have to say. So grab your listening device of choice, download the show, and take some time...to LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.Feedback for this show can be sent to: listentotheprophets@gmail.comListen to the Prophets is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Of our dangerous patrons, one of the more benignly dangerous ones was Gene Gene the Genealogy Machine. And he was only dangerous because anyone near him had a far greater chance of having to gnaw their own leg off to escape the boring details of his family history than those who were not in his presence. Gene's greatest enemy, other than the neighborhood children who often encroached upon his ancestry computing time, were our computers themselves and the near dialup speeds they tended to run at. And while he proposed many fanciful solutions for the problem, getting him to listen to the ONE THING he could do that MIGHT have some effect was the major point of conflict in our relationship with him. This is that story.

There are many irritating patron archetypes, but among the most irritating of them are the Geneal0gy People. Yes, those patrons who are so fervid about their own ancestry that they simply must spend at least six hours a day diligently researching the shit out of it. And, really, if you're gonna put that kind of time and labor into something you're so passionate about, are you gonna keep your discoveries to yourself? Hell no, you're going to tell simply EVERYONE about it all. And who better to start with than the library staff? We had a handful of amateur geneal0gists under foot, but the one we actually avoided at all costs was the man who became known as Gene Gene the Geneal0gy Machine.
Objective: The metabolic syndrome, a major cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, shows increasing prevalence worldwide. Several studies have established associations of both apolipoprotein A5 (APOA5) gene variants and upstream stimulatory factor 1 (USF1) gene variants with blood lipid levels and metabolic syndrome. USF1 is a transcription factor for APOA5. Methods: We investigated a possible interaction between these two genes on the risk for the metabolic syndrome, using data from the German population-based KORA survey 4 (1,622 men and women aged 55-74 years). Seven APOA5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed in combination with six USF1 SNPs, applying logistic regression in an additive model adjusting for age and sex and the definition for metabolic syndrome from the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP (AIII)) including medication. Results: The overall prevalence for metabolic syndrome was 41%. Two SNP combinations showed a nominal gene-gene interaction (p values 0.024 and 0.047). The effect of one SNP was modified by the other SNP, with a lower risk for the metabolic syndrome with odds ratios (ORs) between 0.33 (95% CI = 0.13-0.83) and 0.40 (95% CI = 0.15-1.12) when the other SNP was homozygous for the minor allele. Nevertheless, none of the associations remained significant after correction for multiple testing. Conclusion: Thus, there is an indication of an interaction between APOA5 and USF1 on the risk for metabolic syndrome.
