Hear the musician play the African harp (kora) as he interacts with the guests. We then take a walk through the village, hunting down some of the excellent signage, and ending up in the Harambe Market where we hear the Wildlife Express train as it travels by us.    NOTES:   - The kora instrument you heard:    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kora_(instrument)   - My wife Heather was with me as we recorded this, and she is in a wheelchair in the parks, and so I often gave the microphone to hear as we traveled around, and leaned in for some comments, some of which are a little muted because I didn't lean in far enough. This is how we do things here, and we had fun.   Look us up at @WalkaboutWDW on Instagram and drop us a note to say hi! Find our producer Josh also on Instagram at @TheSteele.

Lastly, we end the episode near the floating mountains of Pandora.    NOTE: if the audio for Dinosaur at points sounds a little off, it is because that attraction is INCREDIBLY loud. I had no idea. It pegged the mic volume in many places. When we do a future checkin, we'll ride again and tinker with the mic gain.    Connect with us at @WalkaboutWDW on Instagram, and find our producer Josh at @TheSteele.

Our favorite vegan foods in Magic Kingdom are the meatless sloppy joe at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe, the Curried Vegetable Crew Stew at Skipper Canteen, the Impossible Meatloaf from Liberty Tree Tavern, and the Veggie Rice Bowl at Pecos Bill's Tall Tale Inn and Cafe. At EPCOT we highly recommend eating Vegan at Le Cellier and trying the Steamed Asian Dumplings, or ANYTHING at the Earth Eats Booth at the Food and Wine Festival. At Hollywood Studios, there's vegan food at the Brown Derby and vegan meals at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. The vegan dish at the Hollywood Brown Derby is Ginger-Lemongrass Pho. AMAZING. However, the best vegan at Hollywood Studios (IMO) is the Felucian Kefta and Hummus Garden Spread. So flavorful, so filling, and mind-blowing for a vegan counter service meal at Disney. At Animal Kingdom be sure to hit up Satu'li Canteen to build your own bowl with fried tofu. There are also vegan food options at Tiffins, Tusker House, Harambe Market, Flame Tree Barbecue, and even Restaurantosaurus. Subscribe and listen to this episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, GooglePlay, or iHeartRadio! Today, we are discussing your listener questions all about Walt Disney World! What are not-to-be-missed adult experiences at Walt Disney World? I discussed with Lou Mongello on WDW Radio Episode #557 the top 10 overlooked experiences for adults, inside and outside of Walt Disney World. Definitely check that out for great suggestions for adult experiences.   One of my absolute favorite adult experiences at Walt Disney World is the Wanyama Safari. This wonderful experience at Animal Kingdom Lodge includes an intimate tour of the savannas and a delicious Jiko dinner. I wrote a detailed review of the Wanyama Safari here.    Special dining is another great adult experience. I discuss dinner at EPCOT’s Takumi-Tei and Le Cellier.   Backstage tours are a fun adult experience. There are many to choose from around all the Walt Disney World parks, each offering a different topic and view of behind-the-scenes activities.  You can read about all the tour offerings here.  What free activities can I do solo at Walt Disney World? Outside of the parks, there are several fun activities that I think are enjoyable to do solo. Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a culinary tour of the two Jambo House restaurants, Jiko and Boma. You can go to Disney Springs to take in the entertainment, do some window shopping, and enjoy some free samples. Take a boat ride from Disney Springs to resorts, or enjoy boat rides in other areas of Walt Disney World. Or go high on the Skyliner between EPCOT and Disney Hollywood Studios, and stop at a resort to explore.  Inside the parks, enjoy the PlayDisney app for games and special effects throughout the parks. Play the interactive game, Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. Enjoy free entertainment in all the parks. At EPCOT, enjoy free performances at the amphitheater outside the American Adventure pavilion.  What Walt Disney World restaurants are good for large groups? I highly recommend making advanced dining reservations for large groups whenever possible. Some of my favorite restaurants for large groups include Trails End at Wilderness Lodge, Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Biergarten in EPCOT’s Germany pavilion, Ale & Compass at the Yacht Club, Boatwright’s Dining Hall at Port Orleans Riverside, ‘Ohana at the Polynesian Village Resort, The Boathouse at Disney Springs, Jaleo at Disney Springs, Il Mulino at Walt Disney World Swan Hotel, and Todd English’s bluezoo at Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel.  What quick service restaurants do you suggest? Dawn had a couple of questions about quick service restaurants, when she visits the parks in late August 2020. Her first question was which restaurant to go to near Spaceship Earth for a quick grab and go, before she and her family leave EPCOT and head to the Magic Kingdom. I recommended Sunshine Seasons in The Land pavilion, or to take the monorail to a resort before going to the Magic Kingdom.  Dawn’s second question was about recommendations for the best quick service restaurants to use quick service dining plan credits. Recommendations included: Magic Kingdom: Be Our Guest or Columbia Harbour House. EPCOT: Sunshine Seasons, Pizza al Taglio (Italy), and Regal Eagle Smokehouse (American Adventure). Disney Hollywood Studios: ABC Commissary in hot weather, or Woody’s Lunch Box in cooler weather. Animal Kingdom: Flame Tree BBQ, Harambe Market, and Satu’li Canteen. Resorts: Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary Resort, Landscape of Flavors at Art of Animation Resort, The Mara at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Pepper Market at Coronado Springs, and Geyser Point at Wilderness Lodge. Disney Springs: D-Luxe Burger, Daily Poutine. Thank you for listening! WDW: Disney Advice from a Local Floridian - 009

Report the Magic

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2019 42:17

Today we are going to take a peek into Walt Disney World through the eyes of a local Floridian. I had the opportunity to chat with Bethany, who lives in Frostproof, Florida (a very tiny town about 45 minutes south of Orlando) with her two teenage daughters and her husband. Bethany grew up two hours from Disney World, and Disney was always a big part of her life.  Now she’s able to pass that on to her children. Not only that, but Disney has introduced her children to so many people from around the world…something you would not get from a small town like Frostproof.   Q&A: What does life look like when you live so close to Disney World? How often do you actually go to the parks? Usually two to three times a month Do you have annual passes to any other theme parks? We have them right now just for Disney, but we’re planning on getting passes for Busch Gardens. We would like a more affordable option for friends and family that come visit. If you are staying the night when you go to Disney World, do you usually stay on property or off property? On property – we will get one of the Value Resorts because it is the kids’ absolute favorite. They just love that everything is oversized and big and the pools are different shapes and themes… Can you explain the feeling behind why you’re so adamant about always having Annual Passes and keeping Disney in your life? It’s the Cast Members. We have never had a bad trip to Disney ever. And to be able to take my childhood memories and pass them down to my children and maybe one day they’ll pass it down to their children… It’s traditions. Like Christmas is not going to be Christmas until we go see the castle lit up. It’s hard to explain. You would think after five years with Annual Passes we would be sick of it, but no. Absolutely not. You do something new every time you go. How Bethany and her family have embraced the Disney spirit If we see a stressed out mom, maybe their kid is crying, we try to help. I think it’s so great that Bethany has taught her kids to think of other people first. She understands the meaning of a Disney vacation, especially to first-timers. One time my oldest daughter came up to me and she said ‘Mama, this kid just grabbed my hand. I don’t know who he belongs to,’ I heard a Mom yelling out for a kid and ‘I said I think we have him!’ I just want everybody to feel appreciated, especially Cast Members, and seeing how some people can act… so I thank them anytime I get a chance because like I said, they make dreams come true. Is Disney World safe? I feel like it is the safest place in the world. My teenage daughters can go off and I don’t have to worry about them. They have their own FastPasses or they might go get lunch somewhere without their father and I… I just love the security that I feel. We always thank the cops that are standing out front because they do an outstanding job. Now it’s not like you shouldn’t still use caution in Disney World, but in addition to the security Cast Members you see throughout the parks, there’s actually a lot that you don’t see. There are so many in plain clothes pretending to be tourists. That doesn’t mean you should do anything different than you would otherwise, but you may feel a little bit safer knowing that someone’s got your back. What’s a common mistake that you see people in Disney World making? Wearing flip-flops! And women wearing heels. (It really happens, I’ve seen it too!) You’ll oftentimes see these women wearing sandals from the stores within the parks because their heels were just killing their feet. WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH FOR YOU TO VISIT DISNEY WORLD? This is such a common question. What are the best shoes to wear in Disney World? My family and I went to Florida in July for the first time two years ago (it wasn’t by choice, it was for a dance competition or I don’t think I would have chosen July otherwise) and I knew it would be so hot. I thought maybe running shoes would make my feet too hot, but it was the best decision I made. Pro Tip from Bethany: If you ever do get blisters on the backs of your feet, first aid has the best blister Band-Aids ever. I can’t find them over the counter and I have searched and searched. First Aid is amazing! I heard this once, I believe it was on another podcast and I of course don’t remember which, but they mentioned that if you are planning a Walt Disney World vacation it’s helpful to start exercising or at least walking, months before your trip. Remember, you will be walking ten to twelve miles a day and I’m guessing most of you, in your daily life, don’t walk ten miles in a day. Children with Special Needs (Sensory sensitivity) Disney is is very stimulating… my youngest daughter is autistic and so she can get overwhelmed with all the crowds around her. Remember how colorful and noisy the parks are to kids and take it easy on the toddlers. They have little legs and it’s usually very hot in Orlando.   If you have a child with sensory sensitivity, seek out Cast Members for help when they get overwhelmed (simply explain you need a “Break Area” to relax from the stimulation.) Bethany remembers one time during the fireworks, the Cast Members brought  her to the Baby Care Center and they let her stay there where it was very quiet until her daughter was able to calm down. But there are several other areas as well that Cast Members will direct you to when you need some quiet in your Disney Day. Favorite Table Service and Quick Service Restaurants Table Service: Nine Dragons (China Pavilion – Epcot). On one visit, Bethany’s sister wanted to try it… and Bethany was introduced to Salt and Pepper Shrimp (a noodle dish). She says the garlic and the spices are what make her get it every time they go to Nine Dragons. Counter Service: Barbecue ribs in Harambe Market in Africa in the Animal Kingdom (they’re actually on the kids’ menu). Also, the Flame Tree BBQ in Animal Kingdom…everything on that menu is good. Absolutely everything.  Favorite Disney Memory Meeting Anna and Elsa. It was Christmas Eve night and the park was empty. They got to meet Anna and Elsa and since there was nobody else was in line, Bethany and her family were able to spend 30 – 35 minutes with the characters before the next family arrived. They played hide-and-seek and Bethany has a picture of her teenage daughter… …and her smile she was just so happy that night and I never thought I’d see that. I just love this because oftentimes I hear the question “Is Disney World for teenagers?” I appreciate the perspective because of course, you wouldn’t expect a young teenager at that point to just buy into a character experience and let themselves just have fun. Not only that, this wasn’t an isolated experience. One time in Animal Kingdom, they were at a dance with a DJ and a girl pulled Bethany’s daughter on to the dance floor with her. And Bethany nearly fell over when her daughter danced. Disney is magic. P.S. After I interviewed Bethany I got a GREAT message from her...she was back in Disney World with her Sister. Now they have gone several times, but they were on a break from going together. Until her Sister could beat the cancer that had taken over. So you can imagine why getting this message was such great news! Congrats to you all!
