Emily Bleeker is a best-selling author whose dual-time-line novel When We Were Enemies moves between a World War II prisoner of war camp in Indiana and the feverish fame of contemporary Hollywood in a story that was partly inspired by her own family history. Hi there. I'm your host, Jenny Wheeler, and today on Binge Reading, Emily talks about intimate betrayals made in the promise of fame and tells the remarkable story of how a serious health crisis gave her the Eureka moment when she was determined to write fiction. Hello, Emily, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Emily Bleeker: Hello, thank you for having me. Jenny Wheeler: Emily, When We Were Enemies, which is your seventh book and the one that we're talking about today, is partly set in a POW camp, a prisoner of war camp in Indiana during World War II. And it dips into aspects of your own family history. I wondered if you'd like to start by just giving us an idea of how it all came together. Emily Bleeker: Yes, sure. It was years and years ago. My dad told me a story about how my grandmother worked in a POW camp in Mississippi, and I had no idea what he was talking about because I did not even know that was a thing. So it went in one ear and out the other. But I have just become more interested in my grandmother's life and her story. I decided to do some research on the topic and found out that was a real thing during World War Two. And the other interesting part of that story about my grandmother is that she met an Italian priest there. She was married to my grandfather and they had a platonic friendship that continued for the rest of his life. He would draw pictures on postcards and send them to her every so often throughout the rest of his life. Italian POWs in US camps Jenny Wheeler: Yes, I must admit,

Jenny Wheeler: Darry, you're a best-selling author, some of your books have reached the Top 100 lists in Australia. And you write “empowering feminist adventures.” That's the way you like to describe them. They're all historicals as well. So tell us, what do you like about writing feminist adventure stories? Darry Fraser: The first thing I hear quite a lot, especially when I'm doing library talks or bookstore events or something is, ‘Gee, all your leading ladies are well ahead of their time.' and so on and so forth. And I had to have a think about and about that and address that women back in the day were just like you and I are in our 21st century, except they had greater restrictions on what they were allowed to do by law or within the family or whatever. But I don't believe that too many women were just wimps. I think they had as strong a personality as people you might meet today. But what fascinated me was how they maintained their own strength and their feminist, - and we're not talking feminazis here, we're talking feminists  - being your own true self, within the restrictions that they came across. And... I think when you step back in time, which is basically what I do, and I love doing that, you find these people dotted throughout history, because we don't often have a great glimpse of the ordinary person's day-to-day life. Finding fascinating historical stories That glimpse of strength comes through, and we're finding more and more stories about let's say Australian and New Zealand women who did their own thing within the...

Hello there, Fiona, and welcome to the show. It's so good to have you with us. Fiona Lowe: Oh, thank you so much for having me. It's great to be here. Jenny Wheeler: Fiona, you've got a very impressive back list in the romance area where you started writing You've got prize winning books that have won RITAs. That's the US romance prize and the RUBY, the Australian prize. But you've turned in more recent years to women's fiction and this one that we're going to be talking about today, The Money Club is actually about the sixth one of these women's fiction ones, if I counted correctly. Why did you make that change from more straight romance to very much women's fiction? Fiona Lowe: Oh, I was published with Penguin Random House in America around about the time that they merged. And I had a series, and the first book had done well. The second book release coincided with the merger and it was absolute chaos. They sacked my editor and they didn't get the books out of the warehouse. And then they said, ‘oh, we're not publishing those types of books anymore.' I had lived in the States and I was writing books set in America, but when that all happened, I had an absolute hankering to write a book set in my own back garden in Australia. A forced change of direction that worked out well I wanted to move beyond looking at one couple and one relationship, and I wanted to roam over all sorts of things and write books about family and communities. I changed direction, but that said, the emotion that I write into my books now, I probably couldn't have done without all those years of having written the romance fiction up until that point. Jenny Wheeler: And are you still with the same publisher, just doing different types of books? Fiona Lowe: No. I'm with Harper Collins, Australia now, have been for the last seven books. Jenny Wheeler: Oh, fantastic.

And we are going to be talking today about one of your recent series, Love and Honor, but you've got six other series and also half a dozen or so standalone books. Give us an idea of where did you get started? Was it with the inspirational fiction, right at the beginning? Hallee Bridgeman: That's what published first, but I wrote years ago, I was originally a secular romance author, not a Christian romance author. I had 10 books written that were secular, typical, straight up romance. And then. I shelved them for a few years, I went through a divorce and I got remarried and I had babies and then one day I pulled them out and that was when I changed them to Christian fiction. Six of those original stories have been published, but I redeemed them. I went in and I made them Christian instead of just a romance story. What else you'll hear in Hallee's interview: Why she rewrote her first ten books How Hallee manages a fulltime job, home schooling two ten boys, and publishing 49 books as well How being a ‘military brat' has influenced her writing. Why Hallee likes to focus on focus on ‘Type A' strong men. and realistic characters who face real world problems. On this weeks episode, Lauren Alexander chats with Ana Cristina Cash about her take on the Hawaiian Christmas classic, "Mele Kalikimaka".  Ana Cristina Cash is an American singer-songwriter, raised in Miami, Florida by her Cuban parents who moved to the United States in the early 1960s during the onset of the revolution. Growing up listening to a multitude of genres, Cash's sound was influenced by an eclectic array of inspiration from gritty Blues and Jazz to Pop-Country. Writing directly from the heart, the singer-songwriter's recordings exhibit a broad vocal range, spanning from an expressive and resonating contralto to a soaring coloratura soprano, otherwise known as the “whistle register.” At the young age of 19, Cash was given the honor of singing “ The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2005 Presidential Inauguration, making her the first Hispanic in history to do so. Cash was then asked to return in 2006 as she was invited to perform at the White House for the President of the United States, the Crowned Prince of Spain and notable world ambassadors. That same year, she released “You Can Change the World” as a duet with Michaelangelo. The song's bilingual counterpart, “El Mundo Puedes Cambiar,” went on to become the theme song for the World Cup Germany 2006. Writing from her heart first, all of Ana's projects reflect her connection to Rockabilly and gritty Blues, along with a flavor of Country and Soul. https://www.anacristinacash.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/groovelab/support

Chris Mitchell: I think I'm doing really good today cause I'm not actually working today. We're recording this ahead of time since it's the day after Christmas and right in the middle of a nice little break that we're taking. So I hope that people are having a happy holidays and preparing for a wonderful new year and all that sort of stuff. But I'm definitely excited to talk about this wonderful story about Hawaii. I was just going to make a reference to the famous Hawaiian Christmas song, but I think, or this the Christmas song that's about Hawaii, but I'll save that. Hibba Meraay: It would be great if you could actually sing us a little portion of that song. Chris Mitchell: This would be the episode that if we could have analytics for, nobody would listen past the third minute. If I started to sing, it would just be over. I was actually trying to work this out statistically, I think I am in the less than one percentile of people who can sing. Hibba Meraay: Oh-no. Chris Mitchell: I have the worst absolute worst singing, so I won't do that. Hibba Meraay: Okay. So maybe we'll just stick to talking about the interview then. Chris Mitchell: That's probably safe. Hibba Meraay: So you met the folks that you interviewed at the Internet Society's 2019 Indigenous Connectivity Summit. Can you tell us what is the Internet Society? Chris Mitchell: Yes, so this is actually an organization that I didn't know enough about until recently and they're in the news a lot for reasons that we'll talk about. But when the Internet was being commercialized, Vint Cerf and several other people that whose names I should know, but I am not recalling right now, they were wanting to make sure there was an organization that would promote the values of the Internet in many ways and make sure that it lived up to the hope of being, a technology that was used for tech, for communicating, for promoting people's good values that people would be able to use it and specifically that everyone would be able to use it in a safe manner. So they both promote connectivity and also things like encryption and security practices and keeping people well informed. They've been funded by money that every time someone registers a .org name. The we hear from the one and only Elvis Presley, singing “Here Comes Santa Claus.” I bet kids of all ages, even young ones today know that voice… Now, while I still call New Orleans home, I recently took a wonderful job at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. That’s where Elvis lived and first recorded! So let’s hear another song from the Volunteer State… enjoy Amy Grant and Kid Pan Alley with “Christmas in Tennessee,” followed by the great jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong with “Christmas in New Orleans.” How fun to compare the lyrics! They both begin with verses about the distinctive trees of the regions. Christmas in Tennessee The leaves are changing colors, they’re falling off the trees I know it won’t be long now till it’s Christmas in Tennessee.  I hope somewhere that Santa Claus is thinking about you and me.  He’s gonna bring us lots of toys when it’s Christmas in Tennessee. Christmas in New Orleans Magnolia trees at night, Sparkling bright,  Fields of cotton look wintery white  When it’s Christmas time in New Orleans A barefoot choir in prayer fills the air,  Mississippi folks are gathering there,  ‘Cuz it’s Christmas time in New Orleans. Next we hear from the marvelous Cajun musician Michael Doucet with “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, followed by a jazzy version of “Blue Christmas” by Louisiana chanteuse Linnzi Zaorkski (who was raised in Alexandria and Shreveport and now calls Bush, Louisiana home). Last we hear a Hawaiian Christmas song, “Mele Kalikimaka,” performed by singer Debbie Davis & sousaphonist Matt Perrine, a married couple who are busy musicians in New Orleans (as are their musical kids). Also featured in this episode are two delighted holiday stories. One is a fun little tale from Justin Wilson, an old Cajun cook from Roseland, with “Santa Claus and the Mouse.” And we hear “The Kitty at the Manger” told by Mary Jean Chester of Des Allemands, Louisiana. The Confetti Park radio show and podcast is supported by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation and Music Rising at Tulane University. Thanks for listening. Remember to look for the magic in every day!
