Send us a textI've pestered my husband to write a book on the legends, myths and rumors of small people around the world for decades. Every culture on the planet holds dear stories of a group of small people that have unrivaled engineering skills that work during the night and live underground or in caves to stay safe from larger humans. These legendary people, If treated with reverence and respect, are known to give away treasures, or point the way to veins of gold, or build vital infrastructure overnight. Maybe it's because I've always been on the short side, measuring about five foot two standing on my tippy toes, but I've always felt a connection to this lore and these mystical people. Let's get into it.A Great Article Is the PERFECT Place to StartI found a great article that feels like the perfect place to begin. From Eagle's Rest Park dot org, Don and Diane Wells write;"The Folklore and Legends of many Native American Tribes and indigenous people from other countries include the stories of the Little People. The Little People live in the woods and are often thought to be hairy-faced dwarfs. Some are no higher than your knee; others are smaller. They build houses in the rock structures under the trees, along streams and sometimes in the trees. They hide from anyone coming into the forest. In the legends of the old countries, they are called Fairies, Brownies, Gnomes, Goblins, Leprechauns, and Pixies to name just a few. Each Native American Tribe has their own name for them. To the Iroquois, they are called Jogahoh; to the Comanche, they are called Nunnupi and to the Cherokee, they are the Yunwi Tsundi."Show Sources and MaterialsDwarves and Gnomes and More, by Don and Diane Wells, for Eagle's Rest ParkLegend of the Tennessee Pygmies (and their tiny stone gravesStrange Tales of Captured Fairies, Gnomes, and Other Mysterious Little People, Mysterious Universe, B. There are few pieces of Hawaiian folklore as beloved as the tales of the Menehune. This group of pint-sized magical wonderworkers have been given credit for building a number of Hawaii's oldest structures. Legend has it that this group of dwarves were contracted by early Hawaiian chiefs to complete great feats of engineering in just one night. While these magical tales may seem fantastic, some have argued that they may contain kernels of historical truth. Were the Menehune actually the first Hawaiian settlers whose achievement have been literally dwarfed through storytelling? Or is there something else going on in this tradition? Tune-in and find out how shrimp payments, tiny Neanderthals, and mythical invasive species all play a role in the story.

Lando's appeal of the ruling in episode 2 of season 1 is finally heard, with Judge Pat again moderating as Lando continues his steadfast advocacy for the belief in alien life. Mucci, on the other hand, finally brings an actual argument on the side of ghosts. Both are determined to be more well-researched in this episode -- and in this season. Hawaiian oral history has it that many centuries ago, a mischievous group of small people lives hidden in the forests and valleys of the islands even before the first settlers arrived from Polynesia. These people, who roamed the deep forests at night, are said to be only two feet tall, though some were as tiny as six inches small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. They enjoyed dancing, singing and archery, and their favorite foods were bananas and fish. According to local lore, they are smart, extremely strong, and excellent craftsmen. They are rarely seen by human eyes, and they are credited with mighty feats of engineering and overnight construction. Even today, there are reports of sightings within the forests of Hawaii. James "Bobo" Fay met up with friends during a recent trip to Hawaii, and recorded the conversations for your listening pleasure! Bobes and his guests discuss Night Marchers, Menehune, "Finding Bigfoot", and more!
Guest Hosts: Warren Harmon & Sara Santiago. Aloha listeners, we are up to Uncle Scrooge #4, and the Menehune Mystery, a real departure for Carl Barks. This is arguably the first story in the Scrooge line not concerned with establishing Scrooge's origin and mythos. The story is an excellent example of one of Barks' frequent story typologies: Scrooge hiding his money somewhere. That somewhere ends up being Hawai'i, in a sort of vacation gone wrong. Apart from the tropical location, the story is notable for being Barks' first major artistic collaboration with new wife Garé, who helped with the background work and suggested the idea, based on knowledge of the folklore of her previous home state. It features some great Beagle Boy antics, fascinating cultural information about Hawai'i, and one of Barks' sappiest endings!
Lucky thirteen! In this installment, we move forward in the Immortal Eyes chronicle, Shadows on the Hill, following the protagonist oathmates to their next adventure in Hawaiʻi. Like the previous book, The Toybox, the storyline (and included adventures) of the Immortal Eyes is kind of ancillary to the setting details laid out here. We found this one somewhat richer overall, with a lot of material that could be used for games set in the islands, with the caveat that one should always use discretion and do some additional research before taking everything in these pages for granted. (Disclaimer: we're both white folks with limited knowledge of the setting and culture.) But even if you don't use the book as intended, it has many beautiful passages and lots of bits that you might want to incorporate into a chronicle of your own. File under "not strictly necessary to buy, but a nice addition to the collection," if that's a label you're keen to use. in the beginning... There's a passage describing the creation of the Hawaiʻian island chain that Pooka mentions reminds them of the intro to the first Civilization computer game. For the sake of a visual aid, and to do a throwback to a game even older than Changeling: the Dreaming, here's the video. It doesn't have quite the same power when the tinny Sound Blaster music isn't piping out of your cheap speakers, but you get the idea. (Pooka will not be taking questions on how many hours they've wasted playing the games in this series, so you'll just have to guess.) ... sacred sites and science One of the secondary antagonists in the book's first adventure is an Autumn Person geologist, Jennifer Friedman, whose character is not really developed beyond that description. She's mentioned as part of a group of tourists who are depleting the mana from the land, as part of an ongoing framing of mana as Glamour specifically infused with the notion of being a dream of the land, an idea of the people, and the relationship between the two. While that concept of mana is an intriguing one, the use of this geologist in relation to it just seems too easy—another foray in the anti-science mentality that crops up regularly in 1st edition. The issue of science intruding on culture is a longstanding one in Hawaiʻi, with the Thirty Meter Telescope protests being the most recent and high-profile conflict. (Note: the protests were erroneously referred to in the episode as taking place on Mauna Loa; they are actually on Mauna Kea.) Changeling has always been a game with the capacity to responsibly explore political issues like this, and if a group wants to engage with heritage and tradition in relation to land use and rights, this is a possible situation to address. On the other hand, the technical knowledge gained about how the planet works can be just as Glamour-inspiring for some, not to mention life-saving for others. That's part of why the character of Dr. Friedman as a throwaway line is so frustrating: she's a one-dimensional foil to the characters. We don't dispute the book's foregrounding of Hawaiʻi as a spiritual landscape first, but if you choose to have a scientist as a villain, at least make them more interesting than being just another Autumn Person. If they're going to disrespect the land to give players a reason to stand against them, they should have some kind of reason for it. This goes for other similar cases as well. All around the world are places and moments where passionate belief is challenged by thirst for data. You can certainly have unabashedly corrupt foes—Pentex and their local branch, Big Fruit, spring to mind—but we recommend giving you and your group the space to get more complex here, because the game allows you to. The nature of Glamour and Banality is a theme we keep returning to; when the stakes are the well-being of entire groups of people, the question of what each of those forces means to people becomes all the more urgent. ... hot tub satyr machine That was a pretty serious topic in the last section. For a bit of whimsy to counterbalance it, here's the hot tub picture from page 124 that Josh found weird and uncomfortable: It's really the satyr's face that does it. The longer you look at it, the more uncomfortable it gets. ... a few resources The book that Pooka mentioned finding at the local bookmonger was the second volume of the Nānā i ke Kumu series. The first two were published in the 1970s as a joint venture between the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa and local community leaders/organizations. They cover all manner of legend, folktale, custom, and religious belief over the course of hundreds of pages; a third volume, published in 2020, covers more modern social problems from a cultural context. You can find more information/purchase the books at the press website, or (if you want) use a certain rapacious corporation's website instead. Such a collection is valuable for creating verisimilitude in your game—there are plenty of stories, practices, and kapu that you can search through to flesh out a Hawaiʻian setting—but also just for self-education. And if you want some cool information about the mindboggling navigational practices that got the Menehune and their people to Hawaiʻi in the first place, check out this page from the university on techniques (see the sidebar for links to specific traditional tools), and this article from the BBC last year about the Hōkūleʻa, a traditionally-built canoe that was sailed using those techniques across the Pacific in 1976. The canoe's voyage demonstrated that the voyages of the ancient Polynesians were entirely possible, creating a sense of renewed pride and interest in the history of seafaring. Pretty astounding stuff that can make for an interesting sidebar in a chronicle set on the seas. (Some of this also pops up in Mage's Dead Magic II, within a WoD-context.) ... promo card note In a misalignment of circumstance, Pooka did not take a picture of the promo card for the Arcadia: the Wyld Hunt CCG they have in the back of their copy of IE2 before departing for overseas voyages. And now, as the episode goes live, they are thousands of miles away from said book. Luckily, the In Arcadia blog has a write-up of the phenomenon, and an image handy as you please: It's unlikely that this is still valid, right? Still, if we can get our hands on more cards, maybe an episode about the CCG will make an appearance in the future... ... your hosts Josh Hillerup (he/him) tasted of the forbidden fruit, and found it resembled persimmon with a hint of cardamom. Pooka G (any pronoun/they) is in terrible need of pastries most hours of the day. ... "Ukuliʻi ka pua, onaona i ka mauʻu." (Tiny is the flower, yet it scents the grasses around it.) —Hawaiʻian proverb cited by Serge Kahili King (psst! email us at podcast@changelingthepodcast.com if you want) (and join our Discord at https://discord.gg/SAryjXGm5j !) Hidden deep withing the wilderness, you won't just find breathtaking waterfalls and beautiful scenery, you may also be lucky enough to stumble across the Menehune. Or perhaps you'll meet a much more harrowing fate, and instead encounter the night marchers. Or maybe you'll be one of the few who meets face to face the goddess of lava and creation. After all, Hawaii's folklore is as diverse as the nature that hides its mythological inhabitants. Let's talk about it.Website: www.weirdthingsandwine.comEmail: weirdthingsandwine@gmail.com

We can observe that whereas the air is the breath of life, fire is the spirit, water the soul, and earth a body. The earthen body is a vessel for all life, including both humans and other supernatural entities under the classification of gnomes. Duendes are supernatural beings in Latin American folklore, and others, similar to spirits like pixies or imps. A Pukwudgie is human-like creature found in Wampanoag tradition. Similar beings are found in the mythos of Hawaiian culture. Said to live in forests and valleys, the Menehune are excellent crafts people like the Germanic earth-dwellers (gnomes) we call dwarves. Their wisdom and craftsmanship may be further associated with another gnome we call the elf. These creatures are often tormentors of homes, causing mischief and frustration to the owners. Hence the reason people unknowingly enter into deals with some gnomes, offering them comically as protectors in their gardens or on their lawns. They may or may not know that these cute, or sometimes scary, decorations are actually superstitious totems and talismans believed to have the magical power of protection from the outside world - as if the house itself were an extension of the earth. Hawaiian legend says the Menehune are a mischievous group of small people, sometimes small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, who live hidden in the forests and valleys of the islands. It is believed by some that they inhabited the islands before the first settlers arrived from Polynesia. We talk to Jan Tenburggencate, author of the book, Menehune Mystery: The Original Tales and the Origins of the Myth, about this fascinating topic. To find Jan and his books on Amazon, click here. Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast
Bryn suggested this month's topic topic topic because Tinker Bell in specific and fairies in general are very interesting to her, and Sarah (aka Jedi Tink, for fairy's sake) agreed! So come fly by us this month as we talk Tink and fangirl about fairies! Question 1: What are the different versions of Tinker Bell and how have they affected us (if at all)? Original Tink from Peter Pan novel (1911) Bryn loves this book and highly recommends it because it is so well written and heartbreaking in many ways, especially for anyone who has loved a child who grew up. Also this: Tinkerbell is WRETCHED! Calls Peter a “silly ass” at least 3 times Sarah highly recommends the Jim Dale-narrated audiobook because it was like an old friend stopped by and read her the book Bonus: Sandy Duncan as Peter Pan in the stage play Tink from Peter Pan Disney film (1953) Interesting thing about Sarah's love of Tink: It's not based on the Disney animated film version of Peter Pan! She liked it, but was never one of her favorite Disney films. And a recent re-watch had her shocked and appalled at how Tink actually tries to straight-up murder Wendy! Bryn argues that Tinker Bell in this movie is a little bit of a villain, but also is treated badly by Hook, who manipulates her because of her feelings for Peter, turns her more against Wendy and traps her. Tink redeems herself by saving Peter from Hook's bomb, and then Peter turns around and saves Tink with his “You mean more to me than anything in this whole world” line. Tinker Bell as Disneyland Park icon (1954) Thanks to Margaret Kerry (the animators' reference model for Tink in Disney's Peter Pan movie), we learned that when Walt Disney was trying to get Disneyland park off the ground, he was advised not to use Mickey Mouse as the park's icon, in case the venture was a failure. So he decided to use Tink (and Jiminy Cricket). Tink ended up being the main icon. She debuted in 1954 on Walt's “Disneyland” TV series to introduce the TV series' four realms. . Gina Rock is flying Tink at Disneyland from 1983-2005. You can hear her interview on Skywalking Through Neverland ep 191. Incidentally, a search for her name on google, and our interview with her is the first video that pops up, with key moments and timestamps shown. Super cool, Google. Also, this is why you put podcasts on YouTube, even if it is just audio only. The sound of Tinkerbell's bell ringing is evocative for Bryn as the cue to “turn the page” sound in 1970s and 1980s Disney read-along storybook albums. In 2001, Sarah made a trip into the Beast's Library in the Animation building at Disney California Adventure, where the “which character are you” quiz served up her answer as Tinker Bell. She considered it for a bit and embraced this fortunate message from the electronic Disney oracle, cementing Tink as Sarah's favorite Disney character. Tink in Hook (1991), directed by Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams as Peter, Julia Roberts as Tink Sarah and Bryn agree that this movie has the WORST Tinker Bell portrayal ever. Miscast, terrible costume, terrible wig, scenes are shot strangely. It's just bad bad bad. But the movie itself is wonderful, pulling from the original book and adapting it in lovely ways to this retelling. Tinker Bell films (7 released from 2008-2014 by DisneyToon Studios) Tink is voiced by Mae Whitman, and it is a portrayal worthy of the legacy of our favorite feisty fairy. Sarah and Bryn both love these films and felt they could have been released in theaters. Sarah and Richard were able to speak with Margaret Kerry about the movies and Margaret even reviewed the films for an episode of Skywalking Through Neverland. Playing fairy: Due to the popularity of the films with little girls, Sarah got to play Tink, and her frost fairy sister, Periwinkle, a lot at kid's parties during that time. They were also popular cosplays at conventions. NOTE:Sarah will never watch Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast again. Way to end on a downer, Disney! Tink from these films is Bryn's favorite Tink and her favorite of the films is Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue. (Honorable mention to The Pirate Fairy because it's also really good and has the super bonus of featuring Tom Hiddleston as a young James Hook). Original songs from the films are very good, too. Question 2: What do we want to learn about fairies/Tink? Origin stories: The faeries appear in folklore from all over the world as metaphysical beings, who, given the right conditions, are able to interact with the physical world. One theory is that the fairies were originally worshiped as gods, but with the coming of Christianity, they lived on, in a dwindled state of power, in folk belief. Fairy Classifications Fairies are not just small and winged. They are mischievous, bad, and also leprechauns, ogres, gnomes can be classified with fairies. So there are 4 different classifications for fairies throughout time. Tricksters (mischevious, pull pranks, sometimes more sinister), Elementals (not as popular) - Paracelsus, classed gnomes and sylphs as elementals, meaning magical entities who personify a particular force of nature, and exert powers over these forces. Folklore accounts have described fairies as "spirits of the air" Makes Sarah think of Fantasia and Tinker Bell films Changelings (theft of human baby and substitute it with a fairy one, fairies abducting humans) Ethereal Spirits (most common now - small, angelic with magical abilities and wings), The Victorians changed the meaning of fairies into what we think of today. making fairies mostly benign, smaller and winged. This is Tink Fairies around the world “Fairy” is a European word. Let's explore some of the supernatural beings and spirits around the world Asia Foxes are very popular in many Asian folk tales Japan: Kitsune: Fox fairies that can morph into human form Udon dish named for the fox, who in many stories is said to love aburaage (a deep-fried tofu pouch) for which the dish is named China: huli jing, shape shifters, take human form, nine-tailed fox is most famous The Americas Mayan: alux, nature spirits who scare humans South/Southeastern Mexico: Chaneque, elf who is small like a toddler but has the wrinkled face of an old person Africa Senegal: Yumboes, earliest reference from early 1800s from an Irish, but the provenance is a little sketchy Hawai'i Menehune, who are mythical dwarf people who live deep in the forests and valleys of Hawai'i Favorite foods are fish and bananas Excellent craftspeople who work during the night Question 3: What are you excited about regarding fairies/Tink? Bryn is captivated by fairy doors and thinks everyone should put one in their home or yard Bryn couldn't find any links for the Seal Beach fairy doors, but enjoy a sweet article with pictures of fairy doors in the San Francisco Bay Area Sarah is heartened to hear that, as of April 2021, the Disneyland Resort was testing a new virtual meet and greet with Tink! EXTRAS More fairy stuff! Great for kids: In the Realm of the Never Fairies was published by Disney Press with text by Monique Peterson and illustrated by the Disney Storybook Artists. It seems to have served as a bit of a bible/blueprint for the Tinker Bell movies and is delightful. Not for kids: A hilarious and possibly disturbing collaboration between Monty Python's Terry Jones and illustrator Brian Froud, Lady Cottingon's Pressed Fairy book. More Tinkerbell movie stuff! Easter eggs Bryn noticed after recording this episode: The Pirate Fairy A TTME Tea episode throwback! James Hook serves Zarina “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot,” a la Captain Picard in Star Trek! Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast Star Wars reference! Animal fairy Fawn tells Tink to “fly casual” when they are transporting a hidden baby hawk through the fairy village. We love a good Han Solo quote!

Happy Full House Friday Everyone! Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh My Lanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. It’s fun in the sun time as the Tanners head to Hawaii to celebrate two years together as a family in S3E1: Tanner Island! Thanks to Danny’s poor sailing abilities the family ends up stranded on an Island, which is actually the correct place they need to be but they don’t realize it until they are “captured” by the tribe putting on the Polynesian Show. Also Joey is obsessed with a dream hula girl that keeps disappearing and reappearing before his eyes. Jesse’s Elvis obsession leads Becky to dive off a cliff complete with waterfall. Stephanie’s belief in Menehune tribe keeps her spirits up and from falling into despair. DJ takes control of the Tanner Group when the arguing gets out of hand Lord Of The Flies “Conch Shell ” style. Mr. Bear is the only Tanner not in Hawaiian Garb. I also discuss Foot Golf , Sun Poisoning , and trying to figure out how much a coconut weighs in pounds (Anyone know?) and activities to do at the Turtle Bay Resort where this episode was filmed. Do you have any fun summer trips planned? In Part 2: After Michelle runs away from DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy when they get frustrated with her bossiness, the girls become frantic. Meanwhile, Rebecca gets fed up with Jesse, who continues to spend all of his time away from the family; and Danny struggles to find the perfect way to propose to Vicki. Amanda Smith is the Founder and Executive Director of Menehune Chef, a non-profit that offers functional, intuitive, and practical cooking education to children on the Garden Island of Kauai, using all local Hawaiian-sourced ingredients. They work with local chefs and farmers to really infuse the essence of community involvement, sustainable living, and locally-grown ingredients into the lives of these children. Amanda’s vision is to impact future generations – starting with a single poi smoothie – and generate a powerful movement that will be shared through our keiki (or “the little ones”) of Hawaii. “Believe in your own passion... how much energy you put into it is really what’s going to resonate the most!” –Amanda Smith P.S. If you’re not familiar with Menehune – and I sure wasn’t – they are a mythological dwarf people from Hawaiian legend who are hidden and far away from human civilization, said to have built communities in the forests and valleys of Hawaii before the first Polynesian settlers arrived. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Matt Moneymaker of Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot. In the season premiere, Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) president Matt Moneymaker, researchers James “Bobo” Fay and Cliff Barackman and skeptical scientist Ranae Holland are called to North Carolina by an Appalachian family that reports generations of sightings on their property. A packed town hall exposes an abundance of stories along the notoriously squatchy Appalachian Trail. With too much ground to cover, the team calls for backup. Bolstered by the support of the team's family and friends including Ranae's cousin, Cliff's brother, Matt's son and Bobo's bestie, the group deploys to four hotspots in an effort to find proof of their elusive adversaries. With the possibility of a sasquatch in their midst, the group of eight descends on one final location, hoping to lay eyes on an Appalachian Sasquatch. This season the team pushes further then they ever have before, when they return to America's Four Corners to re-investigate Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico after extreme weather thwarted their first attempt. Besides America's southwest they also journey to Arkansas, California, Wisconsin, Iowa and Tennessee for deeper explorations into these squatchy states. Plus, a small 400-person town in Minnesota declares itself “home of Bigfoot” and claim that proves true when several night investigations turns up multiple forms of evidence and a packed town hall, which surfaces the best lead of all: a two day old sighting and a footprint cast. The team leaves the mainland to take a break from sasquatching to look for the Menehune or little foot that is said to roam the Hawaiian Islands.
