My guest in this week's Book Club podcast is the novelist Nick Harkaway, whose new book Karla's Choice sees him pick up the mantle of his late father, John le Carré, in writing a new novel set in the world of George Smiley. He tells me why, having spent a career trying to put clear blue water between his own work and that of his father, he's now steering in the opposite direction; about growing up with Smiley; about his relationship with the man so many outsiders have seen as secretive and opaque; about seeking advice from Stephen King's son, Joe Hill; and why moving from his own style to that of his dad is just a ‘turn on the dial'.

The works of John le Carré, who died in 2020, are among the most beloved thrillers of all time. For some, books like "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," "A Perfect Spy" and "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" are simply among their favorite works of literature ever.So it was a perilous task that author Nick Harkaway, one of le Carré sons, set out for himself. The author of multiple well-received science fiction novels, Harkaway picked up the torch from his father to write a new tale starring George Smiley, the Cold War spy who has appeared in more than a half dozen novels. According to Harkaway, it took some work to figure out the right period to set the book in."Smiley's career is a little bit tricky in terms of the continuity because my dad, when he was writing these books, wasn't writing a franchise," Harkaway said. "He was writing one book after another, and each one was the only truth that he cared about." Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. According to Merriam-Webster, noir is “crime fiction featuring hard-boiled, cynical characters and bleak, sleazy settings.” The Cambridge Dictionary says noir shows “the world as being unpleasant, strange, or cruel.” Nick Harkaway new novel Titanium Noir (Knopf, 2023) has all that but with a twist—rather than the fedora-wearing detective hired by a woman who just as soon stab you in the back and love you, the first-person narrator is P.I. Cal Sounder, hired by the police to help investigate the murder of a 7'8”, 91-year-old man who by all rights could have lived several more centuries. Sounder's specialty is investigating crimes against Titans, the one percenters among one percenters, whose access to an exclusive medical treatment known as Titanium 7 enlarges both their bodies and their lifespans. The story is set hundreds of years in the future, when such miracle treatments become possible, but the book also sends roots into the past. The murder weapon, for instance, is a .22 Derringer, a small handgun not too different from the weapon used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. “Killing someone with a gun is noir. Every poster of a noir movie is someone with a gun, whether it's a shadow with a revolver or a kind of Rico Bandello in Little Caesar. The gun is bound up with noir and vice versa,” Harkaway says. Nick Harkaway is the pen name of Nicholas Cornwell. As Harkaway, he is the author of the novels The Gone-Away World, Angelmaker (which was nominated for the 2013 Arthur C. Clarke award), Tigerman, Gnomon; and the non-fiction The Blind Giant: Being Human in a Digital World. He has also written two novels under the pseudonym Aidan Truhen.

Sarah Moss joins James Naughtie to answer listener questions about her novel The Tidal Zone - a story of healthcare, parenting, and the echoes of the past. Adam and Emma are parents to 15 year old Miriam and 8 year old Rose. One day, Miriam collapses at school: her heart briefly stopped beating. She is rushed to hospital. The Tidal Zone considers the impact of this event on Miriam, and all of her family, as they spend time in hospital and then learn to live with what has happened. Interwoven with this story of contemporary family life, is the story of the re-building of Coventry Cathedral after the Second World War, the subject of Adam's academic research. The novel ask questions about how we rebuild and recover after trauma, and how we learn to live with history, both personal and political. On this episode I chat with author Nick Harkaway about accelerating futures, detective stories and the meaning of life. Nick Harkaway is the author of several novels, most recently GNOMON, set in a near-future Britain where everything is recorded, monitored and shared. In this wide-ranging chat we cover everything from writing from multiple viewpoints, to reader expectation, to knowing when to stop and fix something vs pressing on to the end of the draft. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to know: - how can I manage reader expectations? - what are some useful ways to think about story structure? - should I finish my first draft before editing or revise as I go? - how can I turn big SF ideas into stories? We're back with the #content plants crave. Joining us this week is special guest Max Gladstone, SF & fantasy author extraordinaire. But he's not here to talk about his own work, the Craft Sequence, oh no. Max wanted to discuss the phenomenal, long, daunting, nuanced, and mysterious Gnomon, by estemed author in his own right Nick Harkaway.  The discussion this week is spoiler-free, and acts as an introduction to the book and the ideas in it. We had a long and wide-ranging conversation with Max about Nick Harkaway's literary background (his father is also a famous author), which other books of his we've read, and other books in the SF genre that are similar to Gnomon in some way. On the thematic side, we spoke about experimental & postmodern fiction, the surveillance state and it's effect on our lives, what calling something "social construct" actually means, what the leading cause of death in America is, how our phones act as magic items, and what it means to read a videogame.  In a few weeks, we'll have our "post-read" conversation, which will feature heavy spoilers as we discuss the book in-depth. Pick up the book (amzn.to/2MszFb4) and read it with us! Some works that we mentioned in the podcast (our website, spectology.com, has the links if they don't show up in your podcatcher): - Malka Older's Infomacracy - Samuel Delany's Dhalgren - David Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress - Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson- The Play Report of a D&D campaign Adrian ran- The interview with Harkaway Adrian references- Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson- Our previous episode with Tobias Buckell- The Power Broker by Robert Caro - David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest - Not mentioned, but Adrian meant to: The Broken Earth by NK Jemisin As always, we post these links and more at our twitter account, @spectologypod. It's fifty years since the publication of 'The Society of the Spectacle' by the French writer and situationist Guy Debord. It's a book which continues to inspire artists and writers. Novelist Will Self argues that 'Never before has Debord's work seemed quite as relevant as it does now, in the permanent present that he so accurately foretold'. In this programme Will joins Ian McMillan, along with artist Paul Harfleet and writer Nick Harkaway to consider the idea of 'the spectacle', and, in the first of a new Verb series, Hollie McNish introduces new poetry from Keisha Thompson.

Once upon a time, total surveillance was the province of George Orwell and totalitarian states, but we now live in a world where oceans of data are gathered from us every day by the wondrous digital devices we have admitted to our homes and that we carry with us everywhere. At the same time, our governments want us to let them follow everything we do to root out evil before it can strike. If you have nothing to hide, do you really have nothing to fear? In Who's Looking At You , novelist and occasional futurist Nick Harkaway argues surveillance has reached a new pitch of penetration and sophistication and we need to talk about it before it's too late. This is our brave new world: data from pacemakers are used in criminal prosecutions as evidence, the former head of the CIA admits 'we kill people based on meta-data,' and scientists celebrate pulling a clear image of a face directly from a monkey's brain. Where does it end, and what does it mean? Surveillance used to end at our front door, now not even the brain is beyond the prying eyes of an information-hungry world. The application of big data brings many benefits and has the potential to make us wealthier, keep us healthier and ensure we are safer - but only if we the citizens are in control. The programme uses rich archive to illustrate how the 'watchers' have adapted to technology that has super-charged the opportunity to snoop. It examines the arguments of those who claim the right to keep their secrets while demanding that we the people give up more and more of ours. Transparency for the masses? Or simple necessity in a chaotic technological future? What happens to us, to our choices under the all-seeing eye? One thing is certain: if we don't make choices about surveillance, they will be made for us.

We’re back! We regale you with tales of our holidays: Phillip tells of strangers attempting to fight him by insulting his sartorial choices, Colin describes Hawaiian radio stations that play nothing but Hawaiian Christmas music, and Patrick gives a breathless summary of the world’s greatest tea shop. Patrick tries desperately to get sponsored by Uniqlo. We discuss the merits of liking things unironically, dive into a spoilerrific discussion of Nick Harkaway’s The Gone-Away World, discuss Ryan North’s upcoming choose-your-own-adventure version of Hamlet, and promote Pete Townshend’s autobiography and Ice-T’s latest documentary.

In mid-September we discussed a case of mistaken identity at White Castle; the The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker–shaped hole in the Postmodem family, which game may or may not be excellent, and also the other 3D Zeldas; the flaws and virtues of the Wii; the pervasive culture of design-by-project-management and Nintendo's cultural inability to say no; Colin's foray into improv comedy. Feelings and anxiety received an extensive, video games and literature–tinged treatment and we had another potentially family-ending argument this time about Credence Clearwater Revival; Patrick and Colin sang the Crossfire jingle and we all sang the praises of Nick Harkaway once again. Patrick told of his internet-less vacation to France, Phillip called out sanctimonious Internet quitters, and Colin complained about the addictive nature of social media. Hideo Kojima broke the 4th wall, we discussed the Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes trailer and the possibility of Christian Bale as Solid Snake. We discussed a bunch of films including the new Judge Dredd movie, The Raid: Redemption (2011), Shoot 'Em Up (2007), and Bunraku (2010). And fulfilling our music quota, we discussed the new Lil Wayne, the documentary The Carter, the new Atoms for Peace, GZA's classic Liquid Swords, and Pitchfork's practice of re-rating albums including the first Andrew W.K. album. And finally we asked: what if someone quit Wikipedia?

A brief programming note: check out our brand-new website at postmodemcast.com. It's really cool and we made it just for you. In late July we discussed underwear, shorts, shants, knees, jorts, and queefing; The Pre-Taped Call In Show, Junot Díaz, and Seinfeldian second-cousin doppelgängers; Nick Harkaway, John le Carré, and Patrick's classy, magic Twitter interaction with the former; Frank Ocean, Tony Kushner's Angel's In America, Nas, Earl Sweatshirt, and Lil Wayne; Daniel Kahneman, Malcolm Gladwell and Oliver Sacks; the cold fate of bad rapper Pitbull; one man's love of another man's salmon-colored pants; and the official Postmodem uniform: a salmon velour tracksuit. We also gave some shouts out to friends of the show Mark "bobtiki" Boszko and Wolf Rentzsch and Andrew Pontious's show Edge Cases. Oh, and don't forget to check out DadBoner.

On Start the Week Andrew Marr looks into the digital future. Nick Harkaway dismisses fears of a digital dystopia in which distracted people, caught between the real world and the screen world, are under constant surveillance. He believes we need to engage with the computers we have created, and shape our own destiny. Simon Ings is the editor of a new digital magazine, Arc, which uses science fiction to explore and explain what the future might hold for society. While Anab Jain's design company uses scenarios and prototypes to probe emerging technologies and ideas, from headsets to help the blind to see, to everyday objects with their very own internet connection. And Charles Arthur investigates the battle for dominance of the internet with Apple, Google and Microsoft struggling to stay on top, and asks what that means for the rest of us. Producer: Katy Hickman.
