This week on Con Nation Overreaction, Greg and Hoss discuss this unusual situation in which Nebraska fans find themselves...the fourth quarter is boring and we don't know that to do. Let me be clear on this - we echo HC Matt Rhule's position that a boring fourth quarter is in fact good. The more guys we are able to get into the game in those situations is good. We don't need to be Notre Dame scoring 66 points against a clearly over-matched opponent. We need our young guys to get experience. And that's what happened Saturday night when the Huskers welcomed FCS University of Northern Iowa to Memorial Stadium. On the way to a 34-3 victory, Matt Rhule and Co. clearly were not worried about style points. The defense, while giving up some long drives, managed to keep the Panthers out of the end zone, even in the fourth quarter, a point of pride for the upperclassmen, as by that point it was largely second- and third-string players in. But the outcome was the same. It's a short week as the Huskers prepare for their Big Ten opening contest and the 22-ranked Nebraska squad hosts #24 Illinois on Friday night. Enjoy this breakdown of the UNI game and we'll see you next weekend. GBR!
Rece Davis and Pete Thamel sit down with Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule to discuss how his NFL experience - paired with his time at Temple and Baylor - will help him revive Cornhuskers football, why Rhule rooted for defensive coordinator Tony White to get the UCLA head coach job, and what in the world a Runza is. Then, Rece and Pete get into what it's been like working with former Alabama head coach Nick Saban since he joined ESPN, how Pat McAfee has been able to bring Saban's personality out front and center, and how sure they are that Alabama fans are totally patient, pragmatic, and calm following Saban's retirement and not at all worried that Ryan Grubb is going to the Seahawks. 0:00 - Welcome To The College Gameday Podcast 01:24 - Ohio St, UCLA, Boston College Coaching Moves 04:05 - HC Matt Rhule On The Difference Between Year 1 & 2 06:05 - HC Matt Rhule Brings NFL Experience To Nebraska 09:00 - Rhule On The Attraction Of Being A College Coach 13:12 - HC Matt Rhule On Rebuilding Nebraska Football 19:23 - HC Matt Rhule On QB Dylan Railoa Coming To Nebraska 23:04 - HC Matt Rhule: I Just Want To See Our Players Rip It 25:55 - HC Matt Rhule DC Tony White Is The Coolest In The Room 28:02 - Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts' Farm StoriesĀ 30:08 - HC Matt Rhule: Jahmal Banks Has Raised The Bar 32:05 - HC Rhule: Security Didn't Want Me Storming The CourtĀ 33:23 - Nebraska HC Matt Rhule's Favorite Local Lincoln Spots 37:38 - Former Bama HC Nick Saban Joining ESPN Was No Surprise 43:36 - Nick Saban Is Already 100 MPH On NFL Draft Draft Prep 44:50 - Bringing Out Nick Saban's Personality On Gameday 47:26 - Peculiar For UCLA Chip Kelly To Go To Ohio State 51:25 - Alabama Shouldn't Worry About Grubb Going To Seahawks 59:11 - The Apple Vision Pro Is The Bane Of Our Existence Learn more about your ad choices. As franchises progress over the course of the season, they often realize the need to move on from current players, coaches, or executives. Many changes are left to the offseason, but sometimes situations are so dire that they must be dealt with immediately. That is how the Browns felt when trading for Deion Jones, and that is how the Panthers felt when firing HC Matt Rhule. While it's important to use hindsight when evaluating the decisions that were made in order to learn from past mistakes, it's very interesting to consider what Carolina does now in its current position. The Panthers are facing this decision now because it looks like their season may more or less be over, but all teams will have to undergo this high-level organizational analysis at some point this year (unless maybe you're a true contender, but even those franchises can and should make changes). It's too late to know certainly who does what, but we at Hitch Route eagerly await the opportunity to analyze these changes. For now, though, tune in to hear Rob and Alex predict how Week 6 turns out!
