There are 2 Stages of receiving the Holy Spirit: (1) When we receive Christ, we are baptised into Him, born again, and receive the Spirit of God WITHIN, for our own personal blessing, holiness and life with God. (2) There is a subsequent experience of the Spirit after salvation, called the Baptism in the Spirit, when we receive the Spirit UPON, for the purpose of empowering us to witness to Christ and for ministry. The PROMISE of the SPIRIT is also called the BLESSING of ABRAHAM (Galatians 3:14), which is a 2-fold BLESSING (Genesis 12:2). Jesus is the prime example of this 2-stage Blessing of the Spirit: (1) He had the Spirit WITHIN from birth, and by the indwelling Spirit, He lived a perfect holy life to God as a man, but (2) He was not empowered for supernatural ministry until He received the Spirit UPON, at His Baptism. The BAPTISM in the SPIRIT is when we are clothed with POWER, by receiving the SPIRIT UPON, enabling us to witness and fulfil our ministry. Jesus' Baptism in the Spirit is the BLUEPRINT for ours (John 1:33). He already had the Spirit WITHIN from birth, but still needed to receive the Spirit UPON, to clothe Him with power for ministry. Likewise, we have the Spirit WITHIN, from our New Birth, but still need to receive the Spirit UPON, to clothe and anoint us with power to fulfil the Great Commission. He confirmed when God's SPIRIT came UPON Him, He was ANOINTED with God's POWER to minister (Luke 4:17-21). He described His Baptism in the Spirit as the Spirit coming UPON and ANOINTING Him to preach, heal and set the captives free. He also said that once the Spirit came upon Him, He rested and remained on Him, and so God's power was present on Him to heal them. Isaiah prophesied about the Messiah (Anointed One) in 11:1-3, 42:1, 61:1-3. In the Old Testament, nobody was BORN AGAIN or had the SPIRIT WITHIN, as this was only made available in the New Covenant. Although certain prophets, priests and kings were anointed with the SPIRIT UPON, this was not necessarily permanent, nor for all believers. But in the New Covenant, the SPIRIT UPON is available to all believers (John 7:38-39, Acts 2:16-18), and is permanent. Jesus described these 2 ministries of the Spirit WITHIN and UPON in His TEACHING. (1) He described the SPIRIT WITHIN us, as an everlasting FOUNTAIN of living water (John 4:10-14). (2) Later in John 7:37-39, He described the SPIRIT flowing out of us as RIVERS of living water, making us channels of blessing to others (v38). In Luke 11:9-13, He taught God will give His born again children more of the Holy Spirit if they ask Him (it's not automatic). In the Gospels, He primarily prepared His disciples to receive the New Birth and the Spirit WITHIN. He taught about the New Birth of our spirit by the Spirit in John 3:3-9,16. Then in John 14:16-17, He introduced the Spirit as another Helper like Himself. This means He is like Jesus, (1) a PERSON, not a force, and (2) GOD. He is a Divine Person, given to us. He also said in the New Birth the Spirit will INDWELL us forever: “He will be WITHIN YOU.” So He taught in the New Covenant the Spirit will indwell all believers forever. He explained the connection between the NEW BIRTH and the SPIRIT WITHIN in Mark 2:22. First, God must make our wineskin (spirit) new, and then He can put the NEW WINE of His SPIRIT WITHIN us. Old wineskins were renewed by rubbing them with oil. Likewise in the New Birth, our old spirits were made new and holy by the application of the OIL of the SPIRIT, making them able to receive the NEW WINE of the SPIRIT WITHIN. Then after they received His Spirit within on the day of His resurrection, during the 40 days He prepared them to receive the SPIRIT UPON, which they did at Pentecost (Acts 2). On the morning Jesus rose from the dead, He ascended to Heaven, before returning to earth and appearing to His disciples for the next 40 days, before His final Ascension (John 20:16-17). The 4 Purposes for His first Ascension: (1) To fulfil the Feast of First Fruits on the day of His resurrection (1Corinthians 15:20-23). The First Fruits of the harvest must be offered up and waved before God, to be accepted by God on behalf of the whole harvest (Leviticus 23:10-11). Therefore, He had to ascend to Heaven and appear before God to offer Himself as the First Fruits, to be accepted on our behalf. (2) To present His Blood in Heaven (Hebrews 9:12). Thus, it was not appropriate for Mary to touch Him before He made these holy offerings to God. But after He came back from Heaven, He allowed other women and His disciples to touch Him (Matthew 28:9, Luke 24:39, John 20:27). (3) To receive all authority in Heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18, Philippians 2:9-11, Daniel 7:13-14). (4) To receive the Holy Spirit on our behalf, in order to pour Him out (Acts 2:33). He must have received the Spirit from the Father on the resurrection morning, as already that evening, He imparted the Spirit to His disciples (John 20:22).

Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

We're looking at the Sermon on the Mount. It is very famous because in it, Jesus says, “This is what God wants from you. This is the law.” We learn that Jesus really demands things that no other founder of any religion has ever demanded. But when you look at this passage as a whole, you see that the law of God is filled with grace. As Jesus expounds it, we see that the law is grace and that it drives us into grace.  Let's look at three aspects of the law of God that show us his grace: the pain of the law, the premise of the law, and the profile of the law.  This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 20, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 5:1-10, 17-20. The gospel of Matthew is famous for having long discourses of teaching. Matthew 11 is the best single place where Jesus explains how to receive him; Matthew 5 through 7 is the best single place where Jesus explains how to follow him. He teaches us what it means to become a Christian and how to live the Christian life. If you go through the Sermon on the Mount verse by verse, you learn a tremendous number of details about what it means to be a Christian, but we're going to look at it as a whole and we'll begin to see larger themes. First, Jesus tells us what we are to do in the Christian life; secondly, why we are to do it; and thirdly, how we are to achieve it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 20, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 5:1-10, 17-20. We're looking at one of the more well-known parts of Matthew 11. If you're looking at Christianity, this is a matchless summary. Jesus calls out to those who are burdened and weary, and he gives an invitation to find rest in him. He says, “If you are weary and if you are burdened, you haven't really yet understood the greatness of what I offer.”  We're going to look at two things in this passage. First of all, Jesus gives us an analysis: we all have restlessness and we're all yoked to something. Then he offers to give us certain things in their place instead. He offers himself; he offers himself as the yoke; and he offers himself as rest. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 13, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

Matthew chapter 11 begins with John the Baptist sending a message that reveals John is struggling with who Jesus is. All of Matthew 11 is a response to John the Baptist's question. Jesus doesn't say something like, “John, you've misunderstood me.” No, instead, he says “John, the things I claim and the things I am are much more outrageous than you have even heard. Let me show you just how outrageous and how offensive I really can be.”  Jesus makes some of the most outrageous and the most offensive statements that have ever been made in verse 27. He says that he is the only way. This claim that made the people of Jesus' day struggle is also the thing that makes us struggle. Let's look at what this deeper claim is, why you should believe it, and how you should use it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 6, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 11:25-27. In Matthew chapter 11 John the Baptist is struggling with the identity of Jesus. He sends a message and he says, “Are you really who you claim to be?” The rest of the chapter is Jesus' answer to that question. The contemporary relevance of a chapter like this is so amazing and so obvious, because Western civilization is filled with people just like John the Baptist. People who are filled with doubts and questions about Jesus.  Jesus gives us two important things to do in his response. First of all, he says, “Use the magnitude of my claims, the greatness of who I claim to be, to knock yourself out of the deadly middle.” And secondly, “Turn it on yourself and use it to make yourself a little child spiritually.” Let's look more closely at what the deadly middle is and then how to do this. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 29, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 11:18-27. This passage is part of Jesus' response to John the Baptist who was struggling with doubts about the identity of Jesus. It is so relevant for today because many of us may have similar questions or doubts about Jesus. We may be in a similar situation as John the Baptist. In Jesus' response, we find answers to that unbelief.  Let's look at three wonderful things about unbelief that Jesus teaches us in this passage: the power of unbelief, the character of unbelief, and the solution for unbelief. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 22, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 11:16-24. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

Matthew 11 has incredible relevance to us today. In the last 1500 years in the West, there has always been indifference to Jesus; but never have there been so many people who are offended at Jesus. John the Baptist is in the same place. When in prison, he sends Jesus a message, and he says, “I don't know that you're the One. Are you the Messiah? How do I know?”  In Jesus' response, we see three groups of people that don't take offense at Jesus: the poor, the violent, and the least. Each one tells you something about what you have to be and what you have to do if you're even going to be open to Jesus' claims. These three are a model for us to be open to who Jesus is. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 15, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 11:4-15. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

In this passage from the book of Matthew, John the Baptist is struggling with who Jesus is. Why would John, this great religious figure, be dealing with such difficulty? We learn two things from his struggle: 1) you have to make sure you do not try to understand yourself before you understand Jesus, and 2) you also had better realize that if you reject him you'll never be able to stop searching for him. As a response, Jesus gives John a straight answer. We learn two more things from Jesus. He says, “You will not know I'm the One until 1) you feel my offensiveness and 2) you see how I welcome the weak. Let's look a little deeper into this interchange and its  burning contemporary relevance for our world today. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 8, 1996. Series: The Real Jesus, Part 1: His Teaching. Scripture: Matthew 11:2-6. Should college students be required to study Shakespeare? As American universities examine the role of the liberal arts and humanities in our society, what will—and what should—happen to the Bard’s place in English curricula? The Shakespeare Requirement, novelist (and creative writing professor) Julie Schumacher’s new academic satire, asks just that. Jason Fitger, hero of Julie Schumacher’s 2014 novel Dear Committee Members, returns in her new book. The tactless and ineffective Fitger is now chair of the fictional Payne University’s English department, and he’s been tasked with marshaling the department’s faculty to approve a new Statement of Vision. One obstacle is Dennis Cassovan, the department’s elderly Shakespeare scholar, who insists that the Statement include a required semester of Shakespeare. Hanging in the balance? The English department’s annual budget and its home in Willard Hall’s crumbling basement. Julie Schumacher is a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota. Her novel Dear Committee Members, won the Thurber Prize for American Humor. The New Yorker called it “a comic aria of crankiness, disillusionment, and futility.” Her new novel, The Shakespeare Requirement, was published by Doubleday in 2018. She is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. From the Folger’s Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. Published November 13, 2018. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

Why do so many people disbelieve Christianity and reject the message of Jesus Christ? The underlying problem is that we do not want to give up control over our lives and have God be our ultimate authority. To overcome unbelief we must see our need for a Savior and look to Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God, who died for us on the cross. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 22, 1996. Series "The Real Jesus Part 1; His Teaching". Scripture: Matthew 11:16-24

Mark 1:21-45   Remember . . . Mark is amplifying the gospel:  King Jesus has come and He is Lord of all. (v.1)   Jesus Has Authority in His Teaching . . . ·         When Jesus taught, people were amazed. (v. 22) ·         When Jesus taught, He did so with authority.  (v.22) o   He did not teach as the scribes. (Matthew 7:28-29; Mark 7:5-13)   Jesus Has Authority Over Demons . . . o   Demons are fallen angels. (Rev. 12:4) o   Demons are limited in their power. o   Demons are actively at work to carry out the schemes of Satan. o   Demons are able to oppress but NOT possess followers of Christ.   ·         The demons are fully aware of who Jesus is, and they are terrified. (v. 23-24) o   They recognize Jesus as the One sent by God. (v. 24) o   They understand their ultimate destiny. (v. 24)   ·         The demons must submit to the authority of Christ. o   Jesus is the true King who is Lord of all. (Philippians 2:10-11)   Jesus Has Authority Over Sickness and Disease . . . ·         Jesus is sovereign over physical illnesses that are a result of living in a broken world. o   Sickness and disease exist in this world and painfully remind us that we live in a world affected by sin. o   Because of the death and resurrection of Christ, we experience the power of His healing. (Isaiah 53:5; Matthew 8:17; Revelation 21:4-5) §  By His sovereign will some are healed immediately but temporarily. §  By His grace, those who have trusted Christ as Savior and Lord, healing is ultimate and eternal.      Truth Statements:  ·         There is nothing that we encounter in life over which Jesus does not have ultimate authority.   ·         In our helplessness and hopelessness Christ has come that as we submit to His authority we experience His power.   Questions for Discussion: 1.    Why were those who heard Jesus teach so amazed?  What amazes you most about the teachings of Jesus? 2.    The Word of God affirms Jesus as the Living Word, and the Living Word (Jesus) affirms the written word.  What does this say regarding the authority of Scripture and the importance of it for us?  3.    The scribes were leaders who were knowledgeable of the Torah but not followers of the Law.  How did Jesus respond to them?  What does this say to us in how we view and apply God’s Word? (Look at Mark 7:5-13) 4.    Why do you believe the demons recognized Jesus?  What did they know that the people didn’t recognize? 5.    What does Jesus’ authority over demons mean for us today?  How can it affect your life?   6.    In what ways can demonstrations of the authority of Jesus be used to amplify the gospel of Christ in your circles of influence and around the world?

This week we wrap up the mini-series based on lessons given by Charles Fillmore in 1933, “The Principles Used by Jesus in His Teaching and Healing.” I review and emphasize the practicality of last week's material and complete the lessons. A couple of key ideas from the lesson are: 1) “The will is the executive power of the mind and if left to its own resources becomes arrogant, dictatorial, and tyrannical.” 2) “Jesus realized the importance of linking his executive power with the executive power of God.”

This week we are beginning a new series from a class taught by Charles Fillmore in 1933. It has the tantalizing title “The Principles Used by Jesus in His Teaching and Healing.” Some highlights include: “Christ is the sum total of Divine Life existing eternally in God-Mind and constantly expressing Itself in all men. … God-Mind created man whole and perfect. … The mind was not ‘invented' by the brain, but it has evolved the brain as its most efficient instrument. … Our mind is formed of ideas. Every idea in the mind of man is charge with spiritual power. … All creative processes begin and end in the mind. The creative Mind ends its work in its perfect idea; man takes up that idea and carries it into expression within his soul and into manifestation in his body.”

There are three kinds of people who are open to Jesus: the poor, the violent, and the "least of these." Those who are poor, or those who know they're no different than the poor, identify with Jesus the most. If we identify with him and choose to accept him, he will disrupt our lives in order to change us and heal us. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 15, 1996. Series "The Real Jesus Part 1; His Teaching". Scripture: Matthew 11:4-15

We hear from the media and the popular psyche that you can buy religion and become 'spiritual' without real change - and this presumption is false.
