256. The Top Ten Books for Growing Christians

The Rob Skinner Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2024 16:21

With so many books out there, it's easy to get paralyzed and confused as to what to read.  Today, I'm going to share the top ten books I would take with me if  congress declared a law that said people can only own ten books.  These are the books that have changed my life.  The Top Ten Books for the growing Christian.   Leaders are readers.  Everything you want to become or achieve by definition is something you will have to learn to do or imitate from someone else.  The quickest path to get there is to read and imitate those who have gone before you.  John Wooden, who coached his UCLA team to 10 NCAA basketball championships, was a reader.  On the day of his middle school graduation, his father gave him $2 and a card with the following advice: 1. Be true to yourself. 2. Help others. 3. Make each day your masterpiece. 4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible. 5. Make friendship a fine art. 6. Build a shelter against a rainy day. 7. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day. This is a great list, but I want to concentrate on item four:  Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.  Here are a couple of things to note about this advice.  First, he mentions good books.  There are a ton of books that aren't worth reading.  You know you are reading a good book if the following criteria are met: ·        You can read and reread it ·        It inspires you to action, change or imitation ·        It moves you ·        It typically focuses on principles that are useful in a variety of situations ·        It's often been around a while and has a reputation for being good Secondly, Joshua Wooden highlights the Bible as especially unique.  The Bible meets all of the above criteria while adding: ·        A clear path to eternal life ·        How to know who God is, what he is like and what he expects of us ·        Comfort, encouragement and guidance in life Reading won't necessarily make you a great coach, but it will increase your chances of making this life count.  I'd like to give you my top ten list of good books.  These are books that I've read and reread many times.  I've read many books and these have impacted me greatly.  I will classify them by genre. ·        The Bible.  This goes without saying, but there is a reason we should be reading, rereading and memorizing this on a daily basis.  If we don't read anything else, this is the one book that we need to know cover to cover. 1.       Spiritual Book:  “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas A'Kempis a.      This is my most read book outside of the Bible.  “Spiritual Formation” is a buzzword in Christian circles today.  A'Kempis wrote the book on spiritual formation 500 years ago.  Written by a man living in a monastery, it is filled with scripture and insight into living a godly and holy life.  I can't read it without getting completely convicted about the state of my interior life, motivations and sinful nature.  Two bits of advice when starting this book:                                                  i.      Read it one chapter a day along with your Bible.  This is a book for meditation and consideration not rapid consumption                                               ii.      Get past the age and religious bias against this book.  Yes, he was a Catholic monk.  Yes, it's an old book.  However, human nature doesn't change and the issues he deals with in this book are as relevant as the day it was originally printed. 2.      Time management and priorities, “The One Thing” by Gary Keller a.      Keller is the founder of Keller Williams Real Estate Corporation.  He helps us get out of the weedy third soil by advising his readers to daily ask themselves the question, “What's the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” b.     This book will enable you to overcome paralysis caused by too much information, distraction, busyness and other demands that can overwhelm us. 3.      Personal Growth:  “How to fail at almost everything and still win big” by Scott Adams a.      Adams created the Dilbert cartoon series.  In this book he shares about his life, medical challenges, setbacks and successes and offer suggestions on how to find a path for growth that fits how God made you.  Some of the ideas that I go back to over and over again:                                                  i.      Develop your “Talent Stack.”  You may not have legendary talent in one area, but through grit and determination you can become really good at five or more skills.  The combination of five “pretty talented” areas is remarkable.                                               ii.      Use affirmations.  I find this advice an updated and repackaged version of Jesus' teaching on faith in Mark 11:24, “…Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” 4.     How to build your faith level and become more optimistic.  “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale. a.      Peale wrote this book while working as a church minister.  He borrows scripture from the Bible and creates a “crossover” book that helps non-disciples apply Jesus' teaching on faith to tackle real world problems like making money, getting promoted or anything else.  As a disciple, this book has incredible value in both the spiritual and secular parts of life.  Since Jesus said, “According to your faith will it be done to you” in Matthew 9:29, we should be constantly looking for methods of increasing our faith in an increasingly cynical world.  Peale offers sound advice on how to build a firm foundation of faith. 5.      Books on Relationship Building.  “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.  a.      This is the GOAT (greatest of all time) when it comes to building and developing relationships.  Your Friendships, business relationships, family relationships and relationships with non-believers will start multiplying and deepening when you put Carnegie's lessons into practice. b.     Carnegie's advice to be interested in people and ask questions is worth the price of the book alone.  This trait is completely missing in about 90% of the people I meet and leads to dead, one-way relationships.  Assimilate this one tip and you will immediately distinguish yourself as a friend magnet. 6.     Books on money and money management.  “The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas Stanley.  a.      This was a tough one.  There are a lot of books on money out there.  I've never been great at handling or saving money.  In order to compensate for this weakness, I've read a ton of books on money management.  This area is an example of how knowing more won't make you better, it's all about practicing time-honored principles.  The reason why I like Stanley's book is that he devoted his life to understand how rich people get rich.  The paradoxical message is that most rich people got that way by not acting “rich.”  They save money from every paycheck, never pay more than $10 for a bottle of wine, and don't drive fancy cars.  Instead of reading mind-numbing insight on the benefits of hedge-fund investing, it helped me identify and imitate the key traits of people who were better at money management than me.  It's paid off for me. 7.      Fantasy books.  “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy by JRR Tolkien a.      My mom was an English teacher and she would bring home books from her classes for me to read at home.  I became a fantasy fan by reading from Robert Heinlein and JRR Tolkein.  I remember reading “The Hobbit” and falling in love with fantasy.  Upon rereading Tolkien's work, I'm struck by how writers have gotten much better over the last 100 years.  Tolkien needed a good editor to cut out entire chapters of his trilogy.  Peter Jackson did a great job reducing the trilogy to its essential content in his movie series.  However, the Lord of the Rings is still the gamechanger when it comes to fantasy.  All other books are measured against his groundbreaking “world-building” novel.  Another side benefit is the messianic theme running throughout the book.  This book honors courage, masculinity, sacrifice and brotherhood in an age where these qualities are often under attack. 8.     Biography.  “The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt” by Edmund Morris. a.      I've read so many great biographies that this was hard to choose.  Morris highlights Roosevelt's journey from sickly, weakling childhood to robust, vigorous, and courageous manhood.  In the past, people learned from biography as the primary source of instruction.  I couldn't help but be both inspired and called higher by Roosevelt's conscious labor to become a better man.  Here is his counsel on how to overcome fear:                                                  i.      “at the outset almost every man is frightened when he goes into action, but that the course to follow is for the man to keep such a grip on himself that he can act just as if he was not frightened. After this is kept up long enough it changes from pretense to reality, and the man does in very fact become fearless by sheer dint of practicing fearlessness when he does not feel it.” 9.      Books on mindset.  “As a man thinketh” by James Allen a.      The King James Version of Proverbs 23:7 reads “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”  This book develops the idea that our outer, physical world is simply a reflection of our inner, mental or spiritual world.  Nothing is more relevant for a strong disciple than this concept.  Paul echoes the importance of taking charge of our thought life in 1 Corinthians 10:5, “…we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”  This book went on to form the foundation for so many other books like “Think and Grow Rich” and “The Secret.”  Each one is built on the idea that if you change your thinking, you will change your life.  If you don't like to read, you'll like this one.  It's a tiny book.  10.   Books on Marriage.  “The Seven Principles for making marriage work”  by John Gottman. a.      This book is the best of all books on marriage.  He studied marriage in his “love lab” and found out how to predict whether a couple would be stay married or divorce with over 90% accuracy.  The principles of strong marriages and the traits of weak marriages offer a pathway to a life of ever-strengthening love.  One of the primary triggers for me to seek God originally was my desire to have a successful marriage.  The combination of God, God's word and advice from books like Gottman's have enabled me to exceed my most fanciful wishes. 11.    Other notable mentions a.      Any book by Brian Tracy.  His books repeat over and over, but his best is “Maximum Achievement.”  You will hear echoes from this book in his other books. b.     I would hate to be limited to only ten books.  I read voraciously and don't want to give the impression you should cap your reading at only a few.  But I'd like to leave you with a few more thoughts:                                                  i.      It's better to choose a few “good books” and reread them than to simply hope the next book will offer a silver bullet for your problem.                                               ii.      Find a way to take in more reading.  Many people are limited by their reading ability or lack of desire to read.  There are so many ways to take in good reading.  Chief in my mind is audiobooks.  Even if you don't like reading, you can gain the benefit of books simply by listening to them read to you.  Find a way to love reading.

This month our hosts, Beth Whitney and Cole Harper, are joined by Sonja Warner to discuss influence, both gospel and secular, and opportunities for discipleship. Sonja and her husband moved to the Sacramento area in 1993 and began attending Arcade Church in 1999. Over the years, Sonja has been involved in leading small groups and women's Bible Studies. She served for a few years as Women's Ministry Director and currently volunteers at the Welcome Hub and in the library. Most recently, she is exploring the possibility of becoming a writer. Last year Sonja wrote a Bible Study on 1 Peter and is currently working on a study in Hebrews. During the day Sonja works as a bookkeeper for a local small business and is an avid reader with a special interest in history (because the best stories are always the true ones). She lives with her husband of 38 years and a sweet Yellow Lab named Molly.   If you have questions about today's episode, you can email them to info@arcadechurch.com   ------   Some Starting Points for Disciplers: If the idea of discipling another believer is new to you, or if it just feels overwhelming, that is okay. If you are a believer in Jesus and growing in your faith you are qualified!  Here are a few suggestions to help you get started: Pray! Ask God to open your eyes to someone he wants you to disciple. Look around and see who he has placed in your life; and keep an open mind because it might not be someone you would immediately think of. When God puts someone on your heart or in your path, invite them to coffee (or lunch). Take some time to get to know them. Learn their story; what has their faith-walk been like up to now? What are they afraid of, what are the things that encourage/discourage them? What areas of life are they looking to grow in? As the Holy Spirit leads, invite them to meet on a regular basis. Here are a few ideas for how to start: Read Scripture and discuss it together. You might want to start with one of the Gospels (especially if you're meeting with a new believer). Ephesians is also a rich book for discussion. Pray through the Psalms together. Use a study such as The Apostle's Creed by Tim Chester to discuss the essential truths of the faith. The Navigators really do publish an excellent selection of study guides for discipling others. Growing In Christ: A Thirteen-Week Follow-Up Course for New and Growing Christians is a good starting place for new believers. Their Design for Discipleship series covers many topics on the Christian life. Read a quality book together and discuss it. There are some excellent books on discipleship. Eugene Peterson's book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction is one of the best (in my opinion). Habits of Grace by David Mathis is another excellent choice. Remember there is no single, “right” way to do discipleship. Keep God's Word at the center and remember that your role is not to “fix” or change the other person. You are teaching them how to walk with God in their own circumstances; God will transform them as they do.

1 John 2:13 I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father. 14 I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one. Young Men – Because you have overcome the wicked one… Those in process toward maturity, sound in doctrine, but not yet seasoned in the living out of the Christian life based on God's Word. Able to overcome satan The outstanding characteristic of a growing Christian is that they have victories over the satanic system. The outstanding characteristic of adolescent Christians is that they know how to battle in the spiritual war. The Devil will try his utmost to put us in a state of spiritual retardation so that we never get to the place of victory. He will do his diabolical worst to keep Christians at the spiritual babyhood level. Some stay at spiritual childhood all their Christian lives. This is the way he works. Growing Christians learn how to ignore Satan's attempts to brain wash us into believing his lies. You just have to understand where Satan operates. In 2 Corinthians chapter 11, verses 13 to 15, it says, “Satan is disguised as an angel” of light.” He's an angel of light. Satan isn't the one running around making people sin. People sin because of the flesh. Satan is involved in false religious systems. 99.9 percent of Satan's activity is in false religion. He is a liar and a deceiver. He works in the false systems, the false ideologies of the world. Don't blame Satan for your sin. Don't blame Satan for what your flesh is doing. 1Jo 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith. 1Jo 5:5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? Young Men - Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one. Because you are strong, These young men developed spiritual strength. God wants us to be as strong spiritually as we are physically. Some of us would land in the hospital if our physical strength were as strong as our spiritual strength. God wants us to be strong in Him. Joshua 1: 9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Ne 8: 10 “Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Is 40: 31 “But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” Is 41: 10 “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Ep 1: 19 “…and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power…” Ep 3: 16 “…that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man…” Ep 6: 10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ph 4: 13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Co 1: 11 “…strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy…” 2 Ti 2: 1 “You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Ti 4: 17 “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!” and the word of God abides in you, The secret of the strength of young men was their knowledge of the Word of God and their ability to apply it to their experience. They did not waste and weaken their lives through sin. On the contrary, these young men disciplined and directed their lives by the allowing the Word to indwell their lives and center their lives in Christ. Ep 6: 17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God…” PRINCIPLE: The basis of victory over sin is the Word of God. APPLICATION: One of the foundations of Christian living is the application of the principles of the Word of God to experience. This is victory in God's economy. This is the way to gain victory over the world system. Ps 119: 9 “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. 10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! 11Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!” Some people take casual glances at the Word occasionally. They do not consistently see its principles so they cannot apply them to their experience. 1: 6 “… do not practice the truth. 8 … and the truth is not in us… 10 … and His word is not in us.” Christians who develop attraction for the Word of God grow in the things of God. We must hunger, thirst and develop an appetite for what God has to say. Dt 6:6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.” Dt 11:18 “Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.” Ps 1: 2 “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.” Pr 7: 3 “Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart.” Je 15: 16 “Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.” Je 20: 9 “Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name. But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.” Job 23: 12 “I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food.” Jn 15: 7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” Co 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” And you have overcome the wicked one V14 Fathers Fathers – The most mature Christians who have a deep, intimate knowledge of God Jn 17: 3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” 1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. A person who takes a maximum number of principles from the Word of God and applies them to his experience along the way is mature. Many Christians refuse to grow up spiritually because they do not want to find the principles nor apply them to their lives. Christians who truly confess their sins realize that God fully judged sins in Christ. Judgment of our sins occurred 2000 years ago on the cross. Confession accepts this by faith. It is not our emotion about the sin but our faith in what Christ did about the sin that matters to God. This is when it's not just warfare about the doctrine. This is when you understand what the hymn writer meant when he talked about being lost in wonder, love, and praise. This is when you get to the point where your soul is exhilarated in the knowledge of God. It's not the parts anymore, it's the sum of the parts. And in some ways, you're back to the relationship again, only it's fuller and richer and fully informed by sound doctrine, to know the author of that doctrine, to know the God who is behind it. It's to deeply, intimately know God. 1Co 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. One characteristic of a spiritual father is that they reproduce themselves. They lead others to Christ. Have you developed enough in the Lord that you lead others to Christ? Have you reproduced yourself in the faith even once? 1 Co 4:15 “For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.” God characterizes mature believers as having 1) knowledge of the Word of God, 2) wisdom, 3) faith to apply truth to experience, 4) positioning their lives to the principle of grace (Quit pondering the past. In other words, stop dwelling on your past failures and those things that just didn't seem to go right for you.) and 5) maximum structure or discipline in their Christian experience. 2 Pe 3:18 “…but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” Once a person becomes a Christian, they become a target of the Devil. The Devil is unscrupulous. He will try to stunt the growth of new Christians. New Christians are more defenseless than at any other time in their Christian lives.  That is why it is important for a new Christian to get into the Word of God quickly. 1 Pe 2:1 “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  -John 8:32 Our mission is to spread the gospel and to go to the least of these with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ; We reach out to those the World has forgotten.  hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en Don't go for all the gusto you can get, go for all the God (Jesus Christ) you can get. V12 Children- Here it speaks of all believers Ro 4:7 "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, Joh 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. John 3:7 "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' Adopted as sons, John 8, Eph 1 Three levels of Spiritual Maturity These three groups of people do not correspond to physical age or sex. Job 32:9 says, “The abundant in years may not be wise.”  V13 The second series states the highest spiritual experience for each phase Children – Because you have known the Father…. The word here means a small child.  These are new Christians that are family because they have been forgiven of their sins, but are not mature enough to deal with satan Ephesians 4:13 and 14 says something about spiritual babies that's serious. It says this: “Be no longer children” - verse 14, Ephesians 4 - “tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine by the trickery of men, by craftiness and deceitful scheming.” Now, there's another thing about children. They're affectionate and they're drawn to relationships, but they have no discernment. So you tell your kids, “Don't talk to strangers.” They're easily deceived. They're easily beguiled. They'll tend to believe anything. There is a newness of life, there is a wondrous familiarity, personal relationship with God. Little children are more regulated by their affections than their knowledge, isn't that true? They're more affected by their emotions, their feelings, than by information. Some believers live in undeveloped childhood. Though they may be Christians for 20 years, they are still babes in Christ because they spend so little time in the Word of God. If they read the Bible at all, it is not to discover how they can change their lives. They do not connect their problems to the principles of the Word. Spiritual babes are immature believers. These believers walk more out of fellowship than in fellowship with God. They zig then zag. They do not walk on a straight course of spiritual development. The one thing that characterizes their Christian life is instability. They rarely confess their sin. They close off their sins. They are afraid to face them. They may feel sorry for their sins but they do not genuinely confess them. All Christians at the minimum know God personally.  Children don't know much. Today's Promise: Philippians 4:4 Joy is fundamental to the Christian life. Growing Christians are rejoicing Christians. In this promise, Paul commands us to rejoice. Remember, with every command of God, there is a related promise. God always empowers you to accomplish His command. Joy has nothing to do with your circumstance but is connected to the presence of God. Happiness is connected to situations in life. Joy is the evidence of the Holy Spirit working in your life. As you choose to rejoice, you will experience the supernatural joy of Christ flowing through you no matter what you are going through.

Philippians 4:14-17 ESV 14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. A GIFT AND A FRUIT Undeniably, the Philippians faithfulness in their partnership of the gospel was demonstrated in their financial support to Paul. For the record, no church aside from them had entered into partnership with him in giving and receiving when he entered Macedonia, and even after he left the region. Their gifts were properly acknowledged as their show of their kindness to share in his trouble. Indeed, it was a ‘gift' credited to Paul's account. At another angle however, Paul had looked at it as ‘fruit' credited to their account. This was what Paul was after of which marked his posture of ‘looking not his own interest but the interest[good] of others as well.'[Phil 2:4] His satisfaction was seeing the brethren bearing fruit, was it not? Is our gift a fruit? Not all giving are fruits of a growing relationship with God. Definitely, the Pharisees gave their tithes for show. The reason the widow with her two mites with the right motive of love was commended by Christ than they all. It's not the amount but the reason behind the giving. Growing Christians are generous givers. As they abide in Christ, they bear fruits continually. One of the expressions of their love is an outflow of generosity for the Lord's work and causes. Thus, we must focus on ‘fertilizing' the hearts of the believers in our churches. Was this not Paul's focus even in his prayer? He said, “ And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” [Phil 1:9-11] ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram
