Why does it feel like no matter how many wellness trends we follow—clean eating, intense workouts, meditation… we're still exhausted, moody, or stuck in a cycle of burnout? In this episode of Rooted in Wellness, I sit down with Alisa Vitti, a hormone expert, best-selling author, and pioneer in the field of cycle syncing, to uncover what most women are missing when it comes to energy, metabolism, and overall health. We break down the real reason so many women struggle with PMS, cravings, fatigue, and anxiety, and why the problem isn't your willpower, but rather how you're working against your body's natural rhythms. Alisa explains how our infradian rhythm (our monthly cycle) influences brain function, metabolism, and stress response—and how small shifts in our diet, workouts, and daily habits can transform our energy, productivity, and long-term health.Alisa Vitti is a functional nutritionist, women's hormone expert, and founder of Flo Living, a digital platform dedicated to hormonal health. We have never had a re-run before, but there are just so many incredible episodes from the past I don't want anyone to miss. Of all the episodes, this one has changed so many lives, and has the most downloads. I absolutely cannot believe how many messages I received about this episode. If you don't know, Alisa Vitti, HHC, AADP, is a functional nutrition and women's hormone expert, the founder of modern hormone health care company FLO Living, bestselling author of WomanCode, and creator of MyFLO, the #1 paid period app on iTunes and the first and only period tracking and cycle syncing app. We had this conversation almost four years ago while I was desperately trying to conceive, and realize live on the air I was essentially doing everything wrong. Angela welcomes Alisa Vitti, the founder of Flow Living, who discusses the importance of optimising women's hormones and the impact it has on their overall health and well-being. Alisa shares insights from her 20 years of experience in this field, highlighting the positive shift in the conversation around women's hormones and the growing awareness of the need to take action. She also discusses the detrimental effects of stress on women's hormones and the accelerated aging process many women experience, providing practical tips on nutrition, including the importance of managing blood glucose levels and the impact of alcohol on hormonal health KEY TAKEAWAYS Women are often asked to take on too much without adequate compensation or support, leading to increased stress levels. This stress can have a negative impact on hormones, particularly cortisol and progesterone, and contribute to accelerated ovarian aging. Synthetic birth control is not a cure for hormonal issues such as PCOS, endometriosis, or fibroids. It is a temporary band-aid that can disrupt micronutrient balance and have long-term negative effects on hormonal health. Nutrition plays a crucial role in optimising hormonal health and longevity. Cutting out alcohol, managing blood glucose levels, and lifting heavy weights are key factors in supporting hormonal balance and overall health. Cycle syncing, which involves aligning nutrition, fitness, and productivity with the different phases of the menstrual cycle, can help women optimise their hormonal health and alleviate symptoms. It is important to listen to your body and make choices based on how you feel rather than striving for perfection. BEST MOMENTS "Women are going through a hormonal aging process much more rapidly than they should be, and that's across the board." "Synthetic birth control is not a cure for your PCOS, for your endometriosis, for your PMDD, for your fibroids. It's not a cure at all in any way." "You really just want to be in this constant curiosity, experimentation state. This is not about being perfect and getting it right at all." Are you someone who has been on birth control for years yet doesn't really understand its long term effects? How familiar are you with your cycle? Did you know that having horrible PMS symptoms is NOT normal and due to hormone imbalances that we can fix through lifestyle adjustments in each phase of our cycle? Unfortunately, women haven't been well-informed about our own bodies, but it's time to take our power back and equip ourselves with knowledge of how our bodies can function their best. And we have the best guest to lay it all out for us “hormone virgins” in this episode! Alisa Vitti is busting female wellness myths and teaching us how to get to know our bodies and cycles better. Alisa Vitti is a women's hormone and functional nutrition expert and pioneer in female biohacking. She is the best selling author of WomanCode, and her new book, In the FLO. She is the creator of the Cycle Syncing Method™— a female centric diet and lifestyle program that leverages hormonal patterns for optimal health, fitness and productivity. As the founder of FLOLiving.com, she has built the world's first menstrual healthcare platform that helps women around the world put their period issues like PCOS, Fibroids, Endometriosis, and PMS into remission naturally using her highly effective FLO Protocol and the FLO Balance Supplements. Get out your notebooks, because this episode is full of information you need to know to optimize your life through hormone balancing with the Cycle Syncing Method. We talk about why so many women struggle with hormone imbalances, how to cycle sync your workouts, what to eat in the different phases of your cycle, and so much more. We know you're going to learn so much in this episode, just like we did. Make sure to share this episode with a friend because all women deserve to know what's going on with their bodies. “That whole relationship that women historically have had with exercise, with fitness, with dieting, with their bodies, with weight has been made unnecessarily toxic because they've been given a blueprint that belongs to the self optimization for a man's metabolism. I created the cycle synching method because the form of our self care must follow the function of our hormones.” - Alisa Vitti What we talk about: Alisa's journey with PCOS that led her to this work Why we haven't learned about hormone balancing until now What is cycle syncing? The effects of women being left out of medical fitness and nutrition research Food and fitness you should incorporate in each phase of your cycle Why women shouldn't follow a static routine The root of women's toxic relationship with food and exercise Why you have brain fog Where to start with cycle syncing What happens to your cycle on birth control The disadvantages to not ovulating during your reproductive years The contraceptive gel you should ask your doctor for Ask Away: my mom is constantly bringing up my weight. What can I do? “The cycle syncing method is the method I created to help women really understand what to do to take care of themselves correctly in each phase of their cycle. Doing this reduces stress, protects your delicate reproductive hormone balance, protects ovulation, reduces PMS, keeps blood sugar; does all the things you need it to do which is the direct opposite of how you've been told to care for yourself.” - Alisa Vitti New podcast episodes of Confident Collective drop every Tuesday. Are you over dealing with period problems, low sex drive, unruly breakouts, or inability to loose weight? Do you constantly feel too exhausted to get everything done, but still feel like you're not doing enough? The answer to a vast majority of symptoms we all experience on a regular basis is hormones. On today's episode, Josie and Alaina sit down with Alisa Vitti to help you not only heal your hormones, but biohack your hormones to transform your entire life. Alisa is a women's hormone expert, bestselling author, creator of Cycle Syncing Method®, and founder of Flo Living. We'll be discussing hormone 101 (what they are, why they become imbalanced, and what they effect), why symptoms are a sign from your body that something's up, and exactly how you can biohack your hormones to heal your body and make the most of your sex drive, energy, exercise, and life.Check out more advice from Alisa here. Alisa made history on the Dr. Oz Show when she discussed menstruation on national TV. She showed them how to ‘read' your menstrual blood (using mashed fruit as props) to determine if you have hormonal imbalances. You can see the video here. She also spoke about hormones, neurochemistry, feminine energy, entrepreneurship, and success at TEDx, Talks@Google, Summit Series Outside, Hay House, WIE Symposium, and SHE Summit. While she's super science-minded, Alisa has been known to drop F-bombs on stage. You'll find her doing rituals on the new and full moon, and she wears tight, black dresses with colorful aprons in her kitchen — all with her baby girl on her hip and her Italian grandmother's olive-wood spoon in hand. Alisa built FLO Living as a virtual online health center to help women solve their hormonal symptoms from anywhere in the world. I published a book called WomanCode, which has been in the Top 50 bestselling women's health books of all time since it was published. In this solo episode, I share my story of being diagnosed with PCOS having had no period in 8 months and the healing journey I took myself on to restore my cycle and balance my hormones with incredible success when no other options were presented to me. Five years on and still I have no hormonal issues or symptoms! PCOS is a hormone condition which affects 1 in 10 (even as many as 1 in 5) women in the UK, a condition which is the biggest cause of infertility and comes with a range of challenging side-effects including irregular or no periods, hair growth or loss, weight gain, acne, energy or libido changes and more. PCOS is often regarded as 'untreatable' or 'incurable' since there is no magic pill to fix it. Since our hormones are a complex eco-system, the process of managing symptoms or restoring balance can be challenging, but it may demand for you to look at your life and your health in a different way. As our education around our bodies and cycles is (in my opinion) fairly lack lustre, many women feel disempowered in the area of their health and in relation to their period. This podcast is here to serve anyone with PCOS or another hormone-related condition, especially those who are feeling at a loss or disheartened. It is also applicable to anyone experiencing other hormonal challenges, since it includes information which is beneficial to our hormones in general. Plus, it acts as a case-study for anyone interested in a holistic approach to health, taking a full snapshot of our lives when enhancing our wellbeing. In this podcast: - The story from my diagnosis to getting my period back within 5 months - The dietary and lifestyle changes I made to get my period back when I had no other options presented to me except going back onto the contraceptive pill - The steps I took to reduce my stress and improve my self-talk and self-love - The mindset you need when embarking on a healing regimen and the level of dedication, discipline, commitment, compassion you may need - A more energetic approach to our hormones and bodies - The very real struggle when we feel alone in our healing - An invitation into radical self ownership, responsibility and empowerment in the area of our health, bodies and cycles Recommended reading: Alissa Vitti, founder of Flo Living and recommended book Woman Code Lisa Lister - author of Love Your Lady Landscape Alexandra Pope and Shane Hugo Wurlitzer - Wild Power If you want support distilling the noise or understanding how we can work together, you can contact me via instagram @higherlove_withmegan or via my website www.higher-love.com
You know I am a HUGE advocate for the power of knowledge about hormones, and today's interview has the potential to literally change your life. Stay with me. [Scroll down for a deal on how to get free access to Alisa's In the Flo cycle syncing program.] In this episode we talk: * What is cycle syncing, and why are hundreds of thousands of women saying it's changed their lives? * Why intermittent fasting is a big NO for menstruating women * The infradian clock, and how much of our health and life it governs * What disrupts the infradian clock * The four phases of your cycle--follicular, ovulatory, luteal and menstrual--and how to harness the upsides of each one * Why you need to be eating more calories during certain points of your cycle * Using calories strategically to lose weight * The best workouts for each part of your cycle--when to avoid HIIT and heavy-impact training, and when to lean into it * Alisa's favorite new, non-hormonal birth control * How to find a good functional medicine doctor ***DEAL ALERT*** Get a month of FREE access to Alisa's life changing CycleSyncing program by clicking HERE and using code WEGOTTATALKA. If you know any chiropractors, ask them why they became one and you will likely hear about how chiropractic changed their own life in some way. If you watch, you will also be able to see the passion and love for the profession on their face. Chiropractors love chiropractic. We love what we do. We love our patients. Chiropractic is a profession that frequently chooses you. It is a call, that in most cases is unexpected and maybe a little nonsensical given the public perception and statistical career success.Dr. Nikki Porteus, a chiropractor specializing in prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric care joins me to talk about life in the profession. I ask her all my favorite chiropractor questions (including how she got into it), and we discuss and debunk common chiropractic myths, both regular and pediatric. Dr. Nikki exemplifies what it means to be a compassionate and caring practitioner. Plus, she's hilarious! This episode will answer all your questions about chiropractic, and will also have you imagining you became a chiropractor in another life!Show notes:Dr. Nikki mentions the correlation between colic and migraine; you can read more here. I read Alisa Vitti's book about a year ago, and I can definitively say that it is a game changer for any woman. The reason I'm so excited about this is because when I read Alisa Vitti's book, it opened my eyes to the fact that my entire life I was training myself, kind of like a dude. I pretty much thought I was supposed to operate like a man every single day. And so many people, so many women are operating in this way and it can be hugely detrimental. So we dove into the fact that my burnout (that I had a couple of years ago), was completely avoidable if I had known about this earlier. If you aren't familiar with Alisa Vitti, she has been featured in New York times, Forbes Vogue, and the list goes on. She's truly a pioneer of female biohacking, functional nutrition. And she's really the go to for me when it comes to women's hormones and finding the right research founded expertise. Alissa is the founder of Flo Living and the creator of the My Flo app, which allows you to better understand your body and the phases of your cycle for max productivity in all aspects. We're going to talk about burnout and why it's so common in women and how understanding this is going to help you avoid it. We're going to talk about the inflating rhythm and how to truly tune into it for yourself. And we're going to talk about how to leverage this in your work, your brain space, your productivity, your time management, your nutrition, your fitness. And of course, we're gonna talk about sex. I’ll never forget talking to a friend after she suffered a miscarriage. It was her third. She and her husband struggled to get pregnant for years and suffered through hormone treatments, surgeries and much more. They finally conceived and then lost their little one. Then another, and another. She was at her breaking point. Her marriage was at a breaking point and she felt like her body was betraying her. Her struggle was part of what led to my focus on reproductive nutrition. It didn’t make sense to me that women’s bodies should need hormones and artificial treatments to conceive. Fertility is a sign of health, and as I discovered, infertility is usually a sign of a deeper problem that needs to be addressed. Often, artificial hormones can make things worse. Thankfully, my friend did go on to have a beautiful baby (and two more after that), but I was forever affected by her pain while she was struggling with infertility. Today’s guest, Alisa Vitti, has been through the same struggle of hormone trouble and infertility and she also found natural solutions and managed to conceive naturally (she is set to welcome her little on in the next month!). I was so excited to talk to Alisa because she has helped thousands of women restore hormone balance and beat infertility by teaching them how to naturally support their own bodies. In this podcast, Alisa and I talk in depth about: The causes of infertility and how to overcome it PCOS and natural remedies that can help PMS and menstrual related problems Endometriosis Fibroids Many other aspects of hormone health Alisa has also written a book, The Woman Code, about achieving hormone balance naturally, and she blogs at FLOliving.com about all things hormones. She is offering three great hormone related freebies for Wellness Mama listeners and you can get them here. The Fat-Burning Man Show by Abel James: The Future of Health & Performance
I just got back from an awesome vacation in Thailand (we all need a little time off sometimes!), where we were sucking down coconuts, drinking snake blood, eating bugs, and doing all sorts of weird stuff! I'm going to be writing a few blog posts about that soon enough, so stay tuned. I just wanted to remind everyone, that if you are loving The Fat-Burning Man Show, you should definitely subscribe to the podcast. That way you can be sure to automatically receive the newest shows. Also, if you haven't yet left a review, I would so appreciate it if you took the time to let us know how we are doing! We've been dominating the charts lately; last week's episode with Jonathan Bailor has been up there with Jillian Michaels, fighting for the #1 spot! Awesome! So on today's show I talk with Alisa Vitti, the best selling author of The Woman Code. She is also the founder of FloLiving.com, a virtual health center that supports women's hormonal and reproductive health. You may know her best though, from recently getting Dr. Oz to talk about periods on national television! In the show we talk about: Decoding the cycle for relationship success. How women can optimize their hormones. Dealing with low libido and how to feed your adrenals. And, most importantly, what men should know about women. Here's the show!
