We are continuing with our "How to..." series by delving into the world of Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCPs). OCPs, commonly known as birth control pills or simply "the pill," are a form of hormonal contraception designed to prevent pregnancy. But that's not the only thing OCPs are prescribed for. There are two primary types of OCPs: Combination Pills: These OCPs contain two key hormones—estrogen and progestin. Combination pills work by suppressing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries), thickening cervical mucus to impede sperm movement, and altering the uterine lining to make it less receptive to a fertilized egg. Combination pills are available in various formulations, including monophasic (the same hormone dosage in each pill) and multiphasic (changing hormone dosages throughout the cycle). Progestin-Only Pills (Mini-Pills): As the name suggests, progestin-only pills contain only a synthetic form of the hormone progestin. These pills primarily work by thickening cervical mucus and altering the uterine lining, making it less suitable for implantation. Progestin-only pills are often recommended for women who cannot tolerate estrogen or have specific medical conditions that contraindicate estrogen use.In the episode, Dr. Rachel Pope is joined by Dr. Maria Shaker, an OB/GYN expert in Contraception Management, Family Planning, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, Minority and Medically Vulnerable Populations, and Obesity in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is board-certified in Complex Family Planning. Together they discuss how to take OCPs not just for birth control but to also control bleeding or just not have a period. They are taken orally, typically on a daily basis, and contain synthetic hormones that mimic the effects of naturally occurring hormones in a woman's body.Featured in this episode: Combined OCPs Breakthrough bleeding Birth control isn't just for birth control Escape Ovulation History of Birth Control Pills by Dr. Rachel PopeSubscribe to our newsletter here to stay updated and not miss out on new episodes.Submit your questions on anything and everything women's health-related and we will answer them in one of our episodes.

Taking any type of hormonal contraception could increase your risk of getting breast cancer, according to a new study by the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at Oxford Population Health, which is part of the University of Oxford. It's one of the first big studies into this type of birth control assessing the risk of breast cancer. But headlines like this will be alarming, so, what do we need to know and do? Dr Charlotte Porter, Vice President of Speciality at the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Karis Betts, Senior Health Information Manager at Cancer Research UK talk to Anita. More than 140,000 schoolchildren in England were officially "severely absent" in the summer term of 2022, according to official Department of Education figures, and the number of these pupils, missing at least 50% of classes, is growing. So what can be done about it, and how can the individual contributions of headteachers and teachers make a difference? Anita is joined by Caroline Walker a headteacher in Barrow and Alice Wilcock, Head of Education for The Centre for Social Justice. What are the traits of a narcissistic mother? In the second of a Woman's Hour series, 'Narcissistic Mothers,' reporter Ena Miller meets 'Louise' and talks to her about her late mother. Louise's sister 'Charlotte' thinks their mother was a narcissist, but 'Louise' isn't so sure. Mabel Constanduros was a trailblazing female broadcaster and comedian on BBC Radio in the early days of the corporation. She created the sitcom as a genre and brought soap operas to the UK. So why has history forgotten her? Anita Rani speaks to Mabel's great-great nephew Jack Shillito and the academic Jennifer Purcell. Presenter: Anita Rani Studio manager: Duncan Hannant

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Mariana: Thank you and your team for all that you do! What are your thoughts on tahini? I have quite a bit on days 14-28 of my cycle as I do seed cycling but I believe it's made from TOASTED sesame seeds? Does this mean that it's not actually as healthy as portrayed? Thank you!   Kelsey: Hello Doctor, I am 27 year old female. I recently went off TRT and I have a hypothyroid condition. I have had a history of past anorexia nervosa. I am now doing much better in that regard, I am about 130lbs 5'2 and 24ish %body fat. I am a very active individual and have always been health conscious. My diet is almost 100% Whole Foods and I have been on fertility treatment the majority of this year and have been unsuccessful. I have never had a child and have gone for many years with missing periods (no PCOS). In 2020 I went on birth control because I had regained my cycles naturally and was trying to boost hormones to conceive eventually. My question for you is this: how can i regain my natural cycles without medical assistance for each one, and what should my steps be forward from here?   Amanda: Hello! I am 34 years old,105 lbs, 5'1. During my pregnancy, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes- 1.5 years post partum the glucose intolerance is still here. My body type is Vata. Fasting glucose and insulin is normal/low, but the post prandial blood sugar after 55G+ carbs takes 3-4 hours to return to baseline and spikes quiet high and the spike is delayed. I went low to no carb for 5 years due to chronic bloating many years ago. It helped for a few months and then did not help but I continued. Blood sugar is worse during luteal-menstrual. My diet is very clean, balanced organic. PP sugar worse when im low carb. No family hx of Diabetes. I also work as a dentist - could heavy metal exposure could cause glucose issues? Have you seen this? Do you think there is hope to get better?   Maria: Hello Dr. Cabral. Thank you so much for being awesome. I have a question about cellulitis. My 75 year old mom recently had a bout with cellulitis. I wanted to ask you what can you tell me about cellulitis, how can we prevent it from happening again. I did search your past podcast but didn't find what I was looking for.   Gemma: Please can you do a podcast on non hormonal contraception. Or whatever deception methods you consider safe. I am about to get my coil removed it is a progesterone one. I have ductal hyperplasia and I do not want yearly mammograms I just want to get to the underlying root causes and I believe that I should not using any hormones. Thanks   Lisa: How do you get rid of mycotoxins -Ochratoxin I took a mold test and this was a little high 8.83 Are there supplements I can take ? I have been doing IR sauna with binders for 2 years 3-4 times a day but obviously the this is not enough    Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right!   - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2557 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? I get so many questions from women doing our program and challenges about taking hormonal birth control, including the pill, IUD, depo shot, and more. I actually took the pill for many years. I didn't understand why it was so important to ovulate and have a period. The doctor never warned me, and I didn't do any research on it back then. I just thought it was convenient to not have a period, and at the time, I didn't want to fall pregnant. So I thought I'd get Amanda on the podcast to talk about how birth control interferes with your hormones and why having a healthy ovulatory cycle is so important for all women even if you don't want to fall pregnant. In this episode, we discuss:➡️How the menstrual cycle works➡️Why ovulation (and progesterone) is so important➡️How birth control suppresses ovulation➡️How the menstrual cycle offers insights into your overall health➡️What happens when you stop taking the pill➡️How a woman becomes estrogen dominant➡️How stress impacts the menstrual cycle and ovulation➡️The effects of alcohol on the menstrual cycle ➡️How IUDs interfere with your hormones➡️Symptoms from birth control and synthetic hormones➡️Why it takes time to get your hormones back on track after birth control (and how much time it typically takes)➡️How you can support your body when coming off of birth controlLINKSFollow Kitty on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kittyblomfield/Follow Amanda on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/hormonehealingrd/Sign up to Saturée's mailing list to be notified when we release the oyster capsules https://www.saturee.com.au/More reading https://www.hormonehealingrd.com/blog/copper-iudhttps://www.hormonehealingrd.com/blog/hbchttps://www.hormonehealingrd.com/blog/side-effects-hbc

If you are ready to exit off hormonal contraception safely, thrive within your own natural cycle and make the transition as smooth as possible then this episode is for you!Hormonal contraception (specifically the pill) was marketed as a women's empowerment tool in the '60s giving women control over their own fertility. Now it's a normal part of our society with so many women using hormonal contraceptives because it's the only way, right? Wrong. There are a plethora of consequences that can come from shutting down your essential female body system. Everything from mental health issues, gut issues, loss of libido, infertility, or more sinister diseases. Not to mention the fact that not allowing a woman to naturally cycle takes away a core component of her femininity, it literally changes the biochemistry of a woman's brain function essentially putting her into a form of chemical menopause. In today's episode, I dive into what hormonal contraceptives are, how they work, natural alternatives, how you can safely step back into your natural cycle, and how for some women it is the absolute best choice for them at that particular time in their lives.I only hope that today's episode empowers you to make the right decision for you and your body.➡ Nourish and honour your body in each phase of your reproductive cycle through education, awareness, nutrition and lifestyle in my holistic online program, Whole & Healthy Woman - https://chloecollins.com.au/whw/Connect with me:

Aunty flow, 'that time of the month', the P-word….it's called your PERIOD and today I want you to say it loud and proud. Your cycle is the foundation of your health, helping you through every stage of your life. It's a natural and beautiful part of being a woman but it's somehow become a taboo and often shameful topic to talk about. So much so that we can barely say the word 'period' or discreetly slip sanitary products to each other like we're doing some shady, back-alley deal. With literally half the world's population experiencing this, why the hell aren't we talking about this everyday? Our reproductive cycle isn't just for having children, it's the underlying factor and foundation of women's health and with so much misinformation, stigma and shame surrounding menstruation it's time we talk about it! In this episode, I discuss our cycle, why it exists, how it helps us function and how to live and thrive with a healthy cycle whilst debunking the myths and misconceptions around your period. This isn't just for women, so please share with your partners, friends, brothers, fathers etc. A woman's cycle impacts every aspect of life, from hormone health to intimacy and birth; no more “is it that time of the month” jokes - it's time to embrace your period and prioritise its vital role in life.Support the show (http://www.chloecollins.com.au/podcast)

Today I talk with a Medical Student about contraception and its health effects on the woman. We also talk about the moral and spiritual reasons contraception is harmful and should be avoided. Did you know contraception can sometimes be an abortion? Quote on Birth Control by Fulton Sheen"Peace be to you. The subject about to be discussed is birth control. The words are not very proper, first of all, because those who believe in it actually believe neither in birth nor in control. Therefore, we shall never use the words again; they are finished.""Planned unparenthood is the deliberate and willful decision on the part of a husband and wife to exclude from God the opportunity to create another to his image and likeness. It is the human will freely frustrating divine will, as certain agricultural policies deliberately control the productivity of the earth for the sake of a higher economic price. The nonserviam of Lucifer has had its catastrophic effect throughout creation, and particularly in those who say: “I refuse to accept from God that which is his holy will, the increase and multiplication of life.” The refusing to be a co-operator with God is to spoil and maim oneself, for of the unused talents, our Lord said: “Take the talent away.”References and Sources WHO Group 1 carcinogens: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IARC_Group_1_Agents_-_Carcinogenic_to_humansIncreased risk of venous thrombosis: de Bastos M, Stegeman BH, Rosendaal FR, Van Hylckama Vlieg A, Helmerhorst FM, Stijnen T, Dekkers OM. As we’re posting this, COVID-19 is running rampant throughout the globe. It’s a very scary, stressful time and many of us are in lockdown - here in New Zealand, we are now pretty much completely stuck at home! I hope you’re all staying as safe and healthy as possible! So right now while many of us have some more time on our hands, it’s a great time to start focusing on your body and understanding your PCOS.This week we’re talking ALL about hirsutism - otherwise known as unwanted hair growth. It’s one of the more obvious (and quite possibly one of the most frustrating) PCOS symptoms. And women in PCOS are so much more likely to have to deal with this unwanted hair growth than other women - 70%-80% of us women with PCOS will have to deal with these pesky, dark hairs compared to only 4%-11% of the general female population.I know, it’s a pretty staggering difference.Let’s face it, as women, we don’t want to look like we’re prepping for Movember a few months early. No thank you, I’m not competing with my SO on who can grow their mo the fastest! So how do we get rid of these annoying little hairs? Laser? Hair removal cream? Shaving? I know so many other women who have spent an inordinate amount of money on hair removal treatments only to have the hairs sprout straight back up. ARGH!But, if there’s something else going on - something underlying - no amount of hair removal cream will make them magically disappear. And if it does, it won’t be a long term solution.Since I haven’t before, I want to take today’s episode as an opportunity to focus solely on unwanted hair growth (also known as hirsutism). I’m going to be talking about what classifies hirsutism, how the hair growth actually works, what hormones are involved and the various treatment options. If you’re feeling frustrated with these annoying dark hairs that keep sprouting up no matter how many creams, razors and treatments you use, this is a must listen episode. Think of it as your go-to guide for unwanted hair growth! This episode is for you if:Have noticeable hair growth on your face, stomach, back and/or chestYou want to know how to get rid of unwanted hairYou have insulin resistant PCOS.Some things we cover in this episode:Which hormones are responsible for hirsutismWhat proportion of women with PCOS deal with hirsutismDifferent types of hair and how they change with hirsutismThe two-pronged approach to treating hirsutismThe top three things we need to address for hirsutismThe effectiveness of prescription drugs used for treatmentLifestyle changes for hirsutismReferences and Articles:Association of Hormonal Contraception with DepressionEfficacy of a new oral contraceptive containing drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol in the long term treatment of hirsutismInsulin-sensitising drugs versus the combined oral contraceptive pill for hirsutism, acne and risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and endometrial cancer in polycystic ovary syndromeThe evaluation and management of hirsutismHirsutism in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Pathophysiology and Management
