We don't know how or when death is coming with storyteller and writer, Arij Makati, wrote an incredible article on death called “How To Die”. It emcompasses how living across the street from a Hospice Care Hospital made her reflect on her own mortality as it relates to her life, culture and family. I asked her to recite her writings so we can hear it in her own words. Intensively reflective, riveting and passionate these words apply to us all in many ways. It's easy for academics and critics to dismiss the Stoics as depressing or dark. They're not wrong, exactly, because it's true: There are some dark and depressing passages in Meditations. Seneca is not always cheerful. Both writers seem to dwell on death, they paint life as something that can be painful and tragic, they speak of Fortune as something not to be trusted—that the ground beneath your feet can shift in a moment, shattering everything around you.But what's unfair about this criticism, insensitive even, is that it totally ignores the context and the experience of these men—of all the Stoics. Marcus Aurelius buried six of his children. Six! Seneca lost a child and was exiled to a distant island on trumped up charges all at once. Can you imagine what that must have been like for them?“Grief from the loss of a child is not a process,” a mother is quoted as saying in the fascinating book Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe which examines the opioid crisis. “It's a lifelong weight upon one's soul.” Marcus Aurelius and Seneca bore that weight—of course it shaped what they wrote and thought. There was an exchange between Marcus and his teacher Fronto about how he felt “suffering anguish” in his bones from the loss of Fronto's grandchild. When we interviewed the philosopher and translator Martha Nussbaum on the Daily Stoic podcast, she spoke quite movingly about the loss of her own daughter. She pointed out that Cicero, a philosopher who wrote extensively on the Stoics and buried his daughter Tullia, was transformed by grief. It changed him. How could it not have? One book on this topic we've recommended over the years has been Death Be Not Proud by John Gunter, who was similarly trying to make sense of the short but inspiring life of his son Johnny. Paul Kalanithi's book When Breath Becomes Air is also worth reading. And Seneca's writings on death have been collected in an interesting edition called How To Die.-✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail
A bit of a format flip on this episode as Sam and Derek tag team an interview with Jared Dillian, author of the new book No Worries: How to Live a Stress-Free Financial Life. There is a morbid theme running through the music of Johnny Cash. His deep, haunting voice is rarely far from a lyric about death or murder or loss or grief. He has songs about soldiers killed in Vietnam, songs about dying cowboys on the streets of Laredo, about tragic rifle accidents, songs about salvation and damnation, songs about tragedy and war. Famously, he performed almost his entire career dressed in black—like he was on his way to a funeral. So it’s not a stretch to think he might have been a bit preoccupied with the idea of mortality. In an interview with Neil Strauss, Cash explained that this was the wrong way to see it: "I am not obsessed with death. I'm obsessed with living. The battle against the dark one and the clinging to the right one is what my life is about. In '88, when I had bypass surgery, I was as close to death as you could get. The doctors were saying they were losing me. I was going, and there was that wonderful light that I was going into. It was awesome, indescribable — beauty and peace, love and joy — and then all of a sudden, there I was again, all in pain and awake. I was so disappointed. But when I realized a day or so later what point I had been to, I started thanking God for life and thinking only of life.”There’s a similar tendency to think that the Stoics were obsessed with death, particularly Marcus Aurelius and Seneca. (Seneca talked about death so much that there is a recently published collection of his writings on the topic actually titled How To Die). But if they were given a similar chance to comment, like Johnny Cash did, about their fixation with death, we might expect a similar response. They weren’t obsessed with dying but with living. They wanted to get the most out of every minute of this uncertain existence we have all been given. It happens that meditating on our mortality is a powerful way to do that. Memento Mori is an exercise that makes sure we are awake, grateful, and at peace. It prepares us for the inevitability of what is to come, while allowing us to seize every second between now and then. That might seem counterintuitive, but it actually makes perfect sense. If you know death is inevitable, and that there is nothing you can do about it, and you have no idea when it will come, well then what’s the alternative? Or as Andy Dufresne says to his friend Red, in The Shawshank Redemption, when they’re talking about what they’d do if they ever got out: “I guess it comes down to a simple choice: get busy living or get busy dying.” Which is why we should start this morning with gratitude and urgency, with appreciation and awareness. How much time any of us have left is not up to us—but what we do with that time? That’s our call. That’s our song to sing.
DYING IS SIMPLE BUT COMPLICATED. YOU MAY TAKE CHARGE AND HAVE A GOOD ENDING TO YOUR LIFE.

The five most common regrets we have at death number two regret, ( as found by a hospice worker Bronnie Ware) I wish I hadn't worked so hard . Interestingly enough, many people have the same regrets as they die, as found by hospice workers and others. Often we are so involved in working hard that we miss so much of our life, in this episode we explore how this can happen.
The five regrets (as found by Bronnie Ware in her book, 'The Five Regrets.') we have as we die and how we can avoid having them. Almost everyone has regrets about their life as they die. This can make death an even more painful experience. How would it be if we were able to die without regrets?
The five regrets most common regrets we have at death, (as found by Bronnie Ware in her book, 'The Five Regrets.') The fourth regret at death is I wish I'd stayed in touch with my friends. Join us as we explore the five most common regrets we have at death.
I met up and chatted to Femi Martin about her show How To Die of a Broken Heart.
“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.”Marcus AureliusLast episode we learned how How Not To Die.Today we contemplate the flip side: How To Die.Everybody dies. Everybody. Of course we know this to be true. But when was the last time you had a direct experience with someone in the grips of the undeniable reality that afflicts us all without exception? Most people have never even seen a dead person, let alone held the hand of someone expiring their last breath. Why is the one thing we all share in common seemingly deleted from our daily human experience?Because our culture is carefully crafted to obscure, whitewash, sanitize and obviate every unpalatable aspect of the frightening reality that scares the shit out of us more than anything else.As a result, we sleepwalk through life pretending it doesn't exist. Subconsciously, we might even harbor the completely insane thought that somehow, some way, we will be the exception to the rule and find a way to escape such distasteful finality. Then, when death rears it's unfamiliar head (it always does), we recoil. We get uncomfortable. Paralyzed by fear and morbidity, we stumble with our words. Lacking the capacity to even have an open and honest conversation about it, we retreat into a shame spiral.Death breeds fear. Fear breeds resistance. Resistance breeds denial. And denial never helped anyone. This is not a healthy relationship with death. So let go of the fear. Free yourself of the resistance. And let's form a new relationship with death. One that not only acknowledges it, but embraces it as our most potent communal experience. One that guilds our lives with meaning. One that allows us to be more present in our lives. One that unites rather than divides. One that provides fertile soil for gratitude. For me, these concepts are not academic. As I type, Julie's 92-year old father is on his deathbed. It is unlikely he will live to see the weekend. And so for the last several days, our lives have been on hold as our children and extended family have gathered around Larry Mathis to celebrate his remarkable life. We've told stories. Sung songs. Held his hand. Kissed his forehead. Said our goodbyes as he slips out of conscious awareness. This week we've talked a lot about death. This podcast is an extension of that ongoing conversation.Peace + Plants,P.S. – Thank you for an amazing 3 years as we celebrate our 200th episode.
