Cub Kuker Supernatural Podcast EP423 The Tibetan Book of the Dead, also known as the "Bardo Thodol," is a classic Tibetan Buddhist text that offers guidance on the journey of the soul through the intermediate state (bardo) between death and rebirth. Here are seven lessons drawn from its teachings: 1. Impermanence of Life: The text emphasizes the transient nature of life and the inevitability of death. It teaches that recognizing and accepting impermanence can help one live more mindfully and prepare for the afterlife. 2. The Nature of the Mind: Understanding the mind's true nature is crucial. The text describes the clear light of the mind and the importance of recognizing it during the dying process to achieve liberation. 3. Bardo Experiences: The book outlines different bardos (intermediate states) one encounters after death, including the Chikhai Bardo (moment of death), Chönyid Bardo (experiencing reality), and Sidpa Bardo (seeking rebirth). Each state offers opportunities for spiritual progress or obstacles depending on one's awareness. 4. Karma and Rebirth: The concept of karma, or the law of cause and effect, plays a central role. The text explains how one's actions in life influence the experiences in the bardos and the nature of the next rebirth. 5. Visualization and Meditation Practices: The book recommends specific visualization and meditation practices to help the deceased navigate the bardos, recognize illusions, and attain liberation. These practices are also beneficial for the living to prepare for death. 6. Guidance from Deities and Protectors: The text describes encounters with peaceful and wrathful deities, which are manifestations of the mind's own projections. Recognizing these deities as aspects of one's mind can help the soul overcome fear and confusion in the bardos. 7. Compassion and Bodhicitta: Cultivating compassion and the altruistic intention of bodhicitta (the wish to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings) is essential. This mindset helps the soul navigate the bardos with a sense of purpose and connection to all beings, promoting a favorable rebirth or liberation. These lessons offer profound insights into the nature of existence, the process of dying, and the journey beyond death, encouraging spiritual practice and mindfulness throughout one's life. This text offers instructions on each of the six intermediate states (bardo) and helps us to live a better life while preparing for death and beyond. The Bardo Thodol , is a text from a larger corpus of teachings, the Profound Dharma of Self-Liberation through the Intention of the Peaceful and Wrathful Ones. It is the best-known work of Nyingma literature, known in the West as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Translated by Adam Pearcey

What happens when we die? Maybe this book has the answers!'The Tibetan Book Of The Dead' by Padmasambhava is a hidden Tibetan text that explains the 'bardo', the intermediate zone between death & rebirth. It is a companion to be used as a guide for those transitions from life into the next process. There are clear instructions for loved ones/care givers to follow and what to expect in the days following cessation of life.I summarised the book as follows. "A large part of religion is finding meaning, with some practicality attached as well. I personally found this mostly useless but it did get me thinking about the actual logistics of death and caring for dying loved ones. I appreciate Buddhism more than most religions but draw the line at deities & unverifiable claims."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Ashi gives a tour of her home, which her family have occupied for hundreds of years, including a rare look into a remarkable multi-story temple with rich religious frescos, sacred artefacts, and entire floors dedicated to Tara and Guru Rinpoche. Ashi also recounts her remarkable life that embodies so much of Bhutan's recent history. Ashi was born into a family of feudal lords, witnessed the reformations of the 1950s, was educated in Catholic convents in India, and worked for the United Nations, before returning to her family home which she now runs as a cultural centre and guest house. We had our first guest on our podcast - first guest that is still on the planet that is! I had the good fortune to take a class with Robert Thurman at Columbia University back in the 90's. As noted in my talk at the Conference of Living and Dying recently via Tibet House, I was working for Charles Grodin on his talk show when I audited this class in philosophy. It led me to study Tibetan philosophy - Buddhism in particular, which I find to be a peerless philosophy. Robert is an author of many excellent books about Buddhist philosophy, including but not limited to "Inner Revolution" and beautiful translation of the "Bardo Thodol" in the "Tibetan Book of the Dead." His book "Circling the Sacred Mountain was instrumental in my own trip to Mt. Kailash with him in 2004. I've had the privilege to travel with him and his wife Nena to Ladakh, and then later a trip across Tibet where I filmed the journey for a documentary on YouTube "Journey Into Tibet with Robert Thurman." https://youtu.be/MqbG_RY4eiY Robert is one of the wisest, most insightful humans I've met - it's a privilege for him to appear on our podcast. He recently became aware of this podcast during my talk for the Conference, so it was his suggestion he come on to see if he could communicate with anyone "no longer on the planet." It was in that spirit we tried this experiment. As Jennifer notes, she isn't aware of his life or journey outside of knowing he's the father of Uma, and that he's a Buddhist scholar. He's a passionate speaker, and at the moment clearly wanted to express his dismay over the war in Ukraine, and his solidarity for the people who are suffering, as well as the suffering of the Russians who want no part in killing their neighbors. My apologies for playing the role of moderator here - to keep us on track to speak to people on the flipside who might want to speak to Robert. As noted - I texted Jennifer and said Robert wanted to come on the podcast, and she replied "His mentor wants to talk to him." (Jennifer had no idea who that would be.) Later she texted "His mom really wants to talk to him." Then "Steve Jobs told me that he knows him." We didn't get to Robert's mom, but we did get to the other two. For the skeptics in the audience, allow me to say "this podcast isn't for you." That's fine - skepticism is healthy - we can't really understand skydiving until we jump out of the plane. For those who are devout Buddhists who may find this disconcerting, I can vouch that Robert has spent his whole life sharing the dharma, Buddhism across the globe. I recall a monk coming up to us in Tibet, in a cave, outside the view of the soldiers in the courtyard and saying "thank you americans for remembering us." I heard him whisper it in English in Robert's ear - the comment brought me to tears. "Thank you for remembering us." The same can be said of those who are no longer on the planet. "Thank you for remembering us." This podcast is dedicated to remembering those who have gone before us - one can imagine that everything that is said in this podcast is subconscious information, but I suggest looking for new information that could not be cryptomnesia - something someone heard or read. Jennifer is not trying to prove there is an afterlife, she works with law enforcement agencies daily helping people with details to solve cases (the investigators consider it a way to gain new information that turns into evidence). We do this podcast in the same vein - consider this as gathered intelligence that point to a greater truth. It may very well be that we are pulling these concepts out of thin air - but after having filmed people accessing this information for over ten years, 100s of examples indicate otherwise. As always with any insight, we hope that sharing this information heals someone who is in need of healing, sharing this information helps people who need help, sharing these concepts help people to open their minds to the possibility that life continues on and if so, it makes sense for us to learn something new from those no longer with us. After all, the love doesn't die - they still care about us as we did then, it's only we who stop caring about them by pretending we cannot hear them. I can't help but reflect on how my friend Luana's passing led me to Robert's class, which led me to Tibet and India, which led me to this podcast, which led me to this episode. The "red string" of our lives continues on. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as we did making it. Love love. For more information about Robert and Tibet House, see thus.org . His books, lectures and teachings are priceless - find more about him at BobThurman.com For more information about Jennifer, she's at JenniferShaffer.com - I'm at RichMartini.com - for those who are first time viewers, buckle up - to quote bob's pal; "we are all just walking each other home."

Join us this week as we vivisect the cult cinema classic “Jacob's Ladder,” the psychological-horror thriller which inspired the “Silent Hill” video game series and tastefully borrows from various esoteric traditions to give artistic vision to the nightmare realities one faces while attempting to wholify themselves during life's catastrophes and even death. We focus on the biblical symbolism given in the film and relate it to the Tibetan Book of the Dead from which the thematic content of the script was derived. In this episode, I am joined by Wendy and Ronnie Barry who discuss their quest to find the reincarnations of their two sons who, in 1997, died in a car crash. Upon learning of the deaths of their sons, Andy and Bobby, the Barrys immediately turned to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and entered the world of the supernatural as they followed the instructions within to guide their sons through the after-death realms. The Barrys then vowed to find their sons next lives. Embarking on an international search and recruiting the aid and support of high Lamas, tulkus, seers, channellers and more. "We are living through a health crisis, an economic crisis, a racial crisis, and a democratic crisis. Each would be historic on their own. All of them are connected. That they have struck together in this way just might be what compels our transformation."– Anand GiridharadasThis week’s episode is over three years in the making: my talk from Earth Frequency Festival 2017, about a revised narrative of prehistory from which we can grow new myths better suited for our times. I almost didn’t post this episode at all, even after nearly two full days of editing, because it felt tone deaf to zoom out so far and discuss topics like mass extinctions, the evolution of plant-pollinator symbiosis, my critiques of transhumanism and SpaceX, and how fish and clams represent complementary strategies for dealing with turbulent environments. But this feature-length rant erupted from me at a time that rhymes intensely with our current moment: I was scheduled to present on futurism immediately following a heart-wrenching and visceral presentation on the (then ongoing) Standing Rock protests, and it felt right then as it does now to wield what I know in service of new stories that better serve the work of social justice. After all, it is only the alienated and colonized mind that sees climate change, racism, economic inequality, and ecological devastation as separate issues. No: if we are to truly embrace our interbeing with the biosphere (and we must), then we cannot exclude other human beings — or even nonhuman sentient beings — from our maps and models of the nondual truth of who we are. One more disclaimer: This is the last unpublished talk I gave before I started work at the Santa Fe Institute, where my poetic intuitions and armchair science scholarship have been challenged to rise to far greater rigor and discernment. I regard this two-hour screed as both one of my most inspired riffs, the closest that I ever got to a Terence McKenna sermon…but it’s also full of embryonic, raw ideas that have evolved A LOT since this recording happened. I share it with you not as a completed document but as a snapshot of a story in the weaving, and I hope you hear it as the work in progress that it was and is.Thank you and I hope you’ll take a moment to read the supplementary materials below, and support the crucial social justice orgs helping protect the lives and freedom of your neighbors here on Earth, in this especially intense and pivotal moment. Enhancing The Human Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2017 14:56

When it comes to personal development, there are lots of ideas we can use to become the best versions of ourselves.  The idea I share in this episode of the podcast is one of those.  I was reminded of it recently when I watched The Tibetan Book of The Dead.  This documentary film follows Buddhist monks as they perform the rites of passage for those who have recently died.  Their goal is to help the consciousness of the deceased person either realize it's true nature, or find a good rebirth.  The movie has some profound implications for we the living, and our own journey through life, most importantly the idea of letting go. Show Notes The Tibetan Book of the Dead is read to those who have died, to assist them in either waking up to their true nature, or finding a good rebirth. We can adapt the central idea from this book to our own personal development journey. While the idea is to help the individual who has died, let go, we can learn from this as well. We can use this idea in our own lives to help us let go of old ways of being and doing things (i.e. our old story). When we let go of the old, we make a space for the new. It's about waking up to our power to change, and our true nature while we're still living. We're always faced with the challenge of transcending our story. We can't create better experiences while we cling to our old story. Staying in our comfort zone feels good, but it's detrimental in the long run because we never level up our experiences. Life is meant to be a continual transcendence of consciousness, and we're meant to be always improving our level of awareness. A good question to ask yourself is, "Who do I need to become to attract or create the experiences I want to have in life?" ¿Cómo si no? In this podcast Professor Thurman talks about the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The Tibetan name of this book — The Bardo Thodol — literally means The Book of Natural Liberation through Understanding in the Between. A being can be liberated in “the between” (the term is often translated as “intermediate state”), the period after death but prior to rebirth. This liberation takes place through hearing and understanding, because the being in the between is said to become nine times more intelligent than when s/he was alive. After death, fully transformative enlightenment can take place in the between because the patterns that are embedded in the body and in the coarse mind have lost all inertia. This episode is an excerpt from the lecture “Exploring the Tibetan Book of the Dead with Robert Thurman” given at Tibet House US in New York City, February 12, 1994.
