St. Patrick might be the most famous of the Irish saints...but he's far from the most interesting. In 2023, St. Brigid's Day was decreed a National Holiday in Ireland to honor Brigid. Over the millennia, this legendary woman has evolved into a figure encompassing myth, holy legend, pagan icon, and now modern feminist symbol. But who was Brigid, really? To answer that question, travel writer Nicola Brady set off around Ireland to see how she's celebrated, and she found that there's not one simple answer. Because, as with everything in Ireland, you never know quite what's around the corner. Listen for a story that takes you into forests and through time, from the windswept hills of Downpatrick to ancient cathedrals of Kildare. And you just might encounter some fire dancers, divine poetry, and even a miniature Batman on a bicycle... This St. Patrick's Day, Paul and Dan discuss the rich history of Irish myths, legends, and stories in the D&D game. From Druids and Bards to the Banshees and Firbolg, what are some of the best ways to spice up your game with inspirations from the Emerald Isle? Irish mythology is the body of myths indigenous to the island of Ireland. It was originally passed down orally in the prehistoric era. In the early medieval era, some myths were transcribed by Christian monks, who heavily altered and Christianised the myths. Irish mythology is the best-preserved branch of Celtic mythology. The main supernatural beings in Irish mythology are the Túatha Dé Danann ("the folk of the goddess Danu"), also known by the earlier name Túath Dé ("god folk" or "tribe of the gods"). Early medieval Irish writers also called them the fir dé (god-men) and cenéla dé (god-kindreds), possibly to avoid calling them simply 'gods'. They are often depicted as kings, queens, bards, warriors, heroes, healers and craftsmen who have supernatural powers and are immortal. Prominent members include The Dagda ("the great god"); The Morrígan ("the great queen" or "phantom queen"); Lugh; Nuada; Aengus; Brigid; Manannán; Dian Cécht the healer; and Goibniu the smith. They are also said to control the fertility of the land; the tale De Gabáil in t-Sída says the first Gaels had to establish friendship with the Túath Dé before they could raise crops and herds. They dwell in the Otherworld but interact with humans and the human world. Many are associated with specific places in the landscape, especially the sídhe: prominent ancient burial mounds such as Brú na Bóinne, which are entrances to Otherworld realms. The Túath Dé can hide themselves with a féth fíada ('magic mist'). They are said to have travelled from the north of the world, but then were forced to live underground in the sídhe after the coming of the Irish. Many mythological creatures and traditions we know, love, and more importantly fear, owe their origins to Celtic folklore. Borrowed to create epic franchises such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, the countless adaptations of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Walt Disney's Peter Pan, this programme casts new light on the subject. Seanchaí (shan-a-key) were/are traditional Irish storytellers and the custodians of history for centuries in Ireland. They can recite ancient lore and tales of wisdom whenever it was needed and could be considered as something of the Google of ancient times. The Irish people have created a unique and beautifully poetic oral literature.

Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be considered disturbing, frightening and in some cases even offensive.  Listener Discretion is therefore advised.  Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained.  I'm your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the things that go bump in the night, frighteningly imagined creatures, supernatural beings and even some unsolved mysteries but I promise all sorts of weirdness.  So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma....  And on today's Dark enigma well, I got an interesting listener suggestion, complaint, meh suggestion – They wanted to know why I haven't done any Irish stories – well honestly, because I have yet to perfect an Irish Brogue that isn't truly embarrassing, so here you go!  So, with that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight.  The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say Lir that will be a single shot and every time I say children, that will be a double shot.  Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so don… your best Irish Kilt and a thick fisherman's sweater or Celtic tunic as we jump into today's offering of The Traditional Irish Legend The Fate Of The Children of Lir – oh and the Brogue still isn't worthy, so I won't be embarrassing myself by using it, sorry.  Now at the time when the Tuatha de Danaan chose a king for themselves after the battle of Tailltin, and Lir heard the kingship was given to Bodb Dearg, it did not please him, and he left the gathering without leave and with no word to any one; for he thought it was he himself had a right to be made king. But if he went away himself, Bodb was given the kingship none the less, for not one of the five begrudged it to him but only Lir. And it is what they determined, to follow after Lir, and to burn down his house, and to attack himself with spear and sword, on account of his not giving obedience to the king they had chosen. "We will not do that," said Bodb Dearg, "for that man would defend any place he is in; and besides that," he said, "I am none the less king over the Tuatha de Danaan, although he does not submit to me."

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This is the last episode of this fairly long series. And we decided to end it on a caracter we met in the very first story, and one who has cropped up a couple of times since; Fintan Mac Bocera. He is known as the wise seer, and spiritual connection between man and island. He transformed to become one with every aspect of Ireland, and observe it from every point of view. He has seen all of the people come to Ireland, and he has watched from the eyes of a boar, a stag, a salmon and even a bird. But now he meets the hawk of Achill again, and they share their desire to rest. This is a tale with a very definite end point… Fintan and the Hawk walk away from this world, together, never to return. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode. Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. We are not quite sure where the Formorians came from, other than Tory Island and the land under the sea, as their name suggests; the people from under sea - Fomóire, Modern Irish: Fomhóraigh or Fomhóire. Although the Formorians have appeared in the stories of the Mythic Cycle before, we have no clear way of knowing where exactly they came from. We have a few opinions about who they might be descended from, but nothing definitive. Wherever they came from, they lived in and around Tory Island and they were fierce raiders and warriors. They did not sow. They did not farm, they seemed to survive only from taking what was not theirs. But does this make them evil? Balor was one of the 7 great Kings of the Formorian People and although he was known for his evil eye, he was not all evil. *We are moving to a weekly podcast schedule, check out instagram @candlelitales for details! Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. And when the last group landed, came with 300 ships but they found the island inhabited by the Fír Bolg. As a result of not letting them share the land, the two groups made preparations for war. The hooded crow cawed and circled the battlefield. The plain of Moy Tura, (Maghtuireadh) was where the battle would be fought, on the plain of pillars. Large stone pillars were erected for the bards and poets to watch from above, so they could record the battle below. The slick and sharp Tuath De Dannan wielding the magical artifacts from the northern islands faced the Fír Bolg in the first battle of Moy Tura. The Fír Bolg would need to get help from an ancient sage to help them even compete against these magical beings. They fought fiercely, and they would have been wiped out entirely, had it not been from Sreng, the hero that took the arm from King Nuada and faced him in single combat. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode… The next episode will be a very special “making of” as we let you in on how we structured and talked this story out. Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The most famous group of people that came to Ireland are the people of the Goddess Danu. Known as “God like” or to have the powers of the Gods, this chapter of Irish Myth from the Mythic Cycles, offers us the first cast of characters we come back to again and again. Get to know the name of the father God, the Dagda, or the druid Bírog of the mountains, because these characters will reappear again and again in Irish stories. They burned their boats upon landing on the shore of the island, to show they were here to stay. These were the people who went north. We know little of their journey, or who exactly the Goddess was they took their name from, but we do know they learned magic in the northern islands, and brought back four treasures with them. With new found power, they felt entitled to the land… but the land was not empty. The Fir Bolg would have to figure out what to do with these newcomers. And to do that they sent the greatest warrior they had, Sreng. But he did not expect what awaited him when the smoke of the burning boats cleared. On the coast of Northern Ireland lies a remarkable feature: a field of more than 40,000 interlocking hexagonal columns, leading down into the sea. To the ancient Irish, the basalt columns -- the result of a long ago volcanic eruption -- seemed like the foundations of a bridge made for giants. And so they are still called the Giant's Causeway to this day. On this abnormally long episode, we discuss the mythological origins of the causeway and the legendary Irish hero, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, a.k.a. Finn McCool. While the physical bridge to Scotland might be a myth, other connections in the early medieval period were very much evident. Dr. Lucy Barnhouse (@singingscholar),  medieval historian and contributor to @historyfootnote, drops wisdom about Irish monasticism and its impact in Ireland and abroad. We discuss the beer-multiplying, chariot-riding St. Brigid, the hot-tempered St Columba, and the wandering St. Columbanus. In addition, listeners Jenn and Diarmuid talk about their experiences visiting the causeway and reflections on the North. We also discuss Game of Thrones locations, surfing off the Antrim Coast, and the joy of grabbing a pint in an Irish pub. There's Irish butter and soda bread and more Houses of the Holy references than are necessary. (That 1973 Led Zeppelin album features the Giant's Causeway on the cover).
