St. Patrick might be the most famous of the Irish saints...but he's far from the most interesting. In 2023, St. Brigid's Day was decreed a National Holiday in Ireland to honor Brigid. Over the millennia, this legendary woman has evolved into a figure encompassing myth, holy legend, pagan icon, and now modern feminist symbol. But who was Brigid, really? To answer that question, travel writer Nicola Brady set off around Ireland to see how she's celebrated, and she found that there's not one simple answer. Because, as with everything in Ireland, you never know quite what's around the corner. Listen for a story that takes you into forests and through time, from the windswept hills of Downpatrick to ancient cathedrals of Kildare. Escuchar audio

WALKING WITH THE SAINTS l FEAST OF ST. PATRICK, PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND l MARCH 17   Among Christianity's most famous saints is St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. He is venerated by Catholics, and by non-Catholic religions in many parts of the world, and is remembered pompously by a celebration they call ST. PATRICK'S DAY. He is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people and to the Anglo-Saxons and Picts. St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain. Little is known about his family and his childhood, except that he was born about 386 A.D, his father was a deacon of high social standing, and his mother Conchessa, was closely related to St. Martin of Tours, but Patrick as a youth was not himself a great believer. In his writings, he revealed that at the age of sixteen, he was captured by Irish pirates, was brought to Ireland, and there he worked as a slave for six years. While in captivity, he was tasked to care for the sheep staying most of the time in the open fields. This sad situation brought him closer to God. He learned how to pray and was converted to Christianity. In his book Confession, Patrick said that while he was a captive, “The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith and my soul was roused so that, in a single day, I said as many as hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and in the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow, or ice or rain.” After six years of captivity, he heard a voice telling him to go back to Britain. He escaped from his master and walked long miles to a port where there was a ship leaving for Britain, but he had great difficulty in persuading the captain to let him in. After sailing for three days, he and the other men in the boat landed in a wilderness and walked again to find civilization. Once at home, he tried to study more about Christianity. He studied for the priesthood in Auxerre, France and was ordained a priest and in 432 was consecrated Bishop. He was sent by Pope Celestine I to Ireland as a missionary. Upon arriving Ireland, he was not welcomed by the people but he managed to spread Christianity far and wide. Although he gave gifts to the rulers of the place, he never accepted any gifts from them nor from the people. He recognized the pagan-oriented practices of the Irish people and incorporated them into Christian practices. He created councils, founded monasteries and organized Ireland into dioceses. Writing about his mission, St. Patrick said that he baptized thousands of people, ordained priests for the new Christian communities. He converted wealthy women, some of whom became nuns despite the oppositions of their families. He convinced widows and widowers to become chaste and serve their neighbors in need. He traveled to many parts of the island, finding many difficulties, especially with the ruling elite. But he was able to convert sons of kings and obtained the protection of local kings. Saint Patrick died in Saul, Ireland in 461 and is said to have been buried in the nearby town called Downpatrick, County Down. There are several legends about St. Patrick and one legend credits him with showing the people the shamrock, a three-leafed plant to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity. Since then, the shamrock became a central symbol for St. Patrick in the celebration of St. Patrick's Day on March 17. St. Patrick's Day is believed to be the date he died. The Day became a feast in the Catholic Church due to the influence of a Franciscan scholar Luke Wading, a member of the commission for the reform of the Breviary in the early part of the 17th century. He is also the patron saint of Nigeria and of engineers. St. Patrick had a breastplate worthy of being adopted by all believers: “Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ at my right, Christ at my left.       ·

Over the centuries the River Quoile has carried Vikings, steam ships and cargoes of coal and timber from as far afield as the Baltic and Canada. Today it's a river for leisure pursuits – popular with canoeists, anglers and wildlife enthusiasts.Cadogan Enright is a councillor, environmental campaigner and chairman of the local canoe club. He takes Helen Mark out on the river to sing its praises, but also to point out concerns. He tells her that Downpatrick and the surrounding countryside were prone to tidal flooding in the past, but now the threat comes from the land - with increasing winter storms leaving the land saturated. Helen meets Robert Gardiner, chairman of the railway museum, who shows her how the water flooded their exhibition gallery last year and has threatened the museum's financial future.Back on the riverbank, Helen meets Stephen O'Hare, a member of the River Quoile Trust which campaigns for improvements to the river. He shows her the remains of quays along the riverbank, which were once busy dockside areas for cross channel steam ships during the industrial revolution. Trade died out because of the unpredictability of the tides and the difficulties of navigating Strangford Lough out to the Irish sea, and came to a halt in 1957 when a flood barrier was built at the mouth of the river. As for the Vikings – they haven't quite disappeared. Viking historian Philip Campbell and a group of enthusiasts have built a re-enactment village and a replica longship which they sail on stretches of the Quoile. He tells Helen that, as its dragon head noses through the waters which wind around the gentle drumlin countryside, he is filled with appreciation for the beauty of the river and its importance through the centuries.Produced by Kathleen Carragher

WALKING WITH THE SAINTS l ST. BRIDGET OF IRELAND, SECOND PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND l FEBRUARY 1 Normally, people want to appear presentable, pleasing and beautiful. They, in fact, try every means to be so. But our saint today was different. She was born to a rich Irish couple with a singular beauty, but when she was grown up, she asked the Lord to take away that beauty so as to avoid all flattering attentions of suitors and to escape marriage since she wanted to offer herself totally to God. Born in County Louth, Ireland about 450, she showed signs of sanctity from her youth. She was loved by everyone around her, on account of her virtues, amiable character and her serene and obedient disposition. She also loved the poor and was always available to help them. God granted her prayer by allowing her to lose an eye through a disease. She became ugly and those who admired her and pursued her turned away in disgust and pity for her. Her father was also disappointed, but being a good Christian, he was disposed and happy to permit her to enter religious life. She entered the convent and it was Bishop St. Mel, an early disciple of St. Patrick, who gave her the veil. Once she put on the veil for a religious, a miracle happened. Her deformed face became beautiful again. As a religious, she was exemplary in her prayer life, in the practice of the vows, and in making penance and sacrifices. Bridget founded the monastery of Kildaire, the first religious house for women in Ireland, where she presided for many years. She also established communities in other parts of the country. Her holy life gave her the privilege to make miracles which was a great influence in the growth of the Church in Ireland. The Sign of the Cross seemed to be the means by which she performed wonders. St. Bridget was generous, energetic and happy, so she wanted to make people especially those distressed to be joyful. Once, one of her friends brought her a basket of choice apples. She immediately distributed them to the crowd of sick people who surrounded her. The friend did not expect her to do that, so she surprisingly exclaimed: “The apples were for you, not for them.” Bridget simply answered: “What is mine, is theirs.” When she was eighty-seven years old, she was warned of her approaching death, which took place at Kildaire, on February 1, 523, where she was also buried. When the Danes invaded and burned Kildaire, her relics were carried to Downpatrick, where the body of St. Patrick reposed. St. Bridget is considered the Second Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, being the first.        Virtue: piety, simplicity, humility, obedience, commitment, courage, charity, and compassion Prayer: “Lord, may St. Bridget kindle our love for You, and for the poor and the needy.”

Helen Mark is in County Down, where woodland which has been in private hands for centuries is being opened up to the public. Mourne Park was owned by the same family for five hundred years, but has now been bought by the Woodland Trust. Restoration work is underway at the 385 acre site - clearing invasive plants which have smothered some of the ancient trees, and marking out new walking trails for visitors. Almost half the forest here meets the criteria to classify as ancient woodland, which is one of Northern Ireland's rarest habitats. Helen also finds out about recovery work going on to restore the land after last year's devastating wildfires in the Mourne mountains, and learns how sheep are helping the National Trust to monitor the recovery of the landscape, by wearing GPS trackers attached to special collars. En route she encounters St Patrick's Way – an 82-mile walking trail which spans two counties and connects Christian heritage sites between Armagh and Downpatrick. Helen walks a section of the route, with a journalist-turned-nun as her guide. Presented by Helen Mark and produced by Emma Campbell.

This week's show covers new music from Nashville's Soccer Mommy, Hamburg's Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, Detroit's Omar-S with Supercoolwicked on vocals, and Brisbane's Moses Gunn Collective. For the archive track this week, Brendan goes back to 1996 for a slice of melodic grunge track from Ash, a band from Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. If you know of Ash, you will probably know this tune, as it was a Number 5 hit on the UK Top Ten that summer. It's a quiet-loud-quiet 1990s tune; what's not to love?Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. (Great music is included there, too, ladies and gentlemen.) It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link.  (And do so without fear. ST. PATRICK l PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND Feast Day: MARCH 17 Among Christianity's most famous saints is St. But he was able to convert sons of kings and obtained the protection of local kings.Saint Patrick died in Saul, Ireland in 461 and is said to have been buried in the nearby town called Downpatrick, County Down. He is also the patron saint of Nigeria and ofengineers. St. Patrick had a breastplate worthy of being adopted by all believers: “Christ with me, Christ before me,Christ behind me, Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ at my right, Christ at my left.

Irish Neutrality is not for saleThe Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to dominate the news agenda. Lines of tanks and armoured vehicles inexorably move toward Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Images of hospitals and family homes bombed and destroyed; of refugees, particularly children, the elderly and disabled, forcibly fleeing has led to a massive outpouring of solidarity. People want to help. Some provide food and clothing for shipping to Ukraine. Others offer to provide shelter for those refugees who make it to our shores. All very worthwhile and commendable. However, some in the political and media establishment in the South have cynically seized on the current crisis to argue for an end to Irish neutrality. Some media commentators have worked themselves up into a militaristic frenzy. They want the Irish government to sign up to a European Army and NATO. Great to Get Out.Now that the pandemic restrictions are eased it is great to get out and about again. Of course the pandemic hasn't gone away so it is still important to take common sense precautions. This last week or so I have been galloping around book gigs in West Tyrone, South Armagh and County Down. The events are good fun. Relaxed discussions about books and writing. A few selected readings from Black Mountain and a chance to meet new friends and to catch up on old ones. Time for Presidential voting rightsAs readers will know citizens outside the southern state, including those in the North are denied the right to vote in elections to select the President of Ireland. This is despite support for this right by the current government. It is in the programme for government. It is also supported by a Constitutional Convention.Lá Fhéile Pádraig Faoi Mhaise Daoibhse.I was delighted to be in Downpatrick this week. A fine historical town forever connected with Saint Patrick. I was shot around this time in 1984. My Uncle Paddy died on St Patricks Day after visiting me in the hospital.

Whatever other differences there may be between the different strands of unionism on other issues like how to oppose the protocol, on this they are united. Maura McCroryMaura McCrory died last week and I attended her funeral. It was uplifting to see so many of Maura's friends from across the decades gathered in her honour and in respect and solidarity with her clann. I'm sure Maura's family took comfort from that. While she has been ill for the last few years in the 1970's and 1980's Maura was hugely well known as a defender of the political prisoners.Black MountainI published a new book last August.
