In this week's episode we look at Queen Medb of Connacht in Ireland, who was legendary for her seductive power, her warlike nature, and her political power among the High Kings. Notorious for having several lovers in addition to whoever was her current husband, Medb was a kingmaker and a heromaker. Her desire to have wealth equal to her husband drove her to the destructive Cattle Raid of Cúailnge (Cooley), and she is frequently portrayed as as manipulative and promiscuous in medieval literature. We take a particular look at the question of whether Medb was a sovereignty goddess or a real legendary queen, her hatred of her first husband Conchobar mac Nessa, ancient Irish rites of sovereignty, and her connection to the trio of goddesses called Morrigan.
In this second part of the Heracles saga, let us introduce Heracles and his very special to-do list. What sounds like a very mundane list of chores might reveal to be more dangerous than you might think. Oh, and the gods are also going to throw a huge reward into the mix as well.. Riwo's pick is pre-Christian times in Ireland. Her pick is also part historical but also part myth and legend. She's a complex woman. Queen Medb (also spelled Maeve, Mave, Meave) her name is connected to alcohol - you know meade-woman - she starts a war over who has a prettier bull, and it takes 30 men in a night to satisfy her sexually. She's a lot and she's not apologizing for any of it.
Queen Medb, Queen of Connacht and downright vengeful woman whose beauty could rob men of two thirds of their valour oh and who may or may not have been a real person... Shelly wonders how much she has changed. A conversation with The Moirai helps her realise that speaking very precisely is how a mortal survives in the fairy world. Filthy Henry and Dru discuss Cathal's usage of the hurley stick, wondering if the right person has been found for the job. Medb and Lauren think up of a way to skirt The Rules when the final conflict approaches, because you can never trust a villain. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
An awkward conversation between Filthy Henry and Shelly takes place. Medb tries to use her feminine wiles to secure her prize and has a conversation about how breaking The Rules will not be tolerated. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Naul learns something about secret ingredients. Shelly and Filthy Henry observe a path of destruction unlike anything they've ever seen. A scary realisation causes the fairy detective to rethink his defense strategy quickly. Medb tries to get a glimpse of her long sought after bull. Shelly's recovery is like a racing turtle, slow but steady. Dru and Filthy Henry have an awkward conversation about things best left unsaid. Medb grows tired of being told to wait constantly. Cathal is shown that love can never be a simple path. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Summer requests begin with Rhiannon, the Welsh Otherworldly figure, perhaps a goddess, from the Mabinogion. She is associated with horses, and is similar to Celtic figures like Morrigan and Medb with her connection to sovereignty. We look at the significance of her story from the first and third branches of the Mabinogi, with a discussion of horses as chthonic symbols, and the idea of initiation with respect to the Otherworld.
Medb is reminded about The Rules, much to her annoyance. But a dark and disturbing plan is proposed by Lauren that may work just as well. Dru returns with Shelly, causing Filthy Henry to panic and wonder what had caused her injuries. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Filthy Henry and Medb finally meet face to face. The Rules of Engagement are agreed upon, much to Cathal's dislike. Dru and Shelly have some shocking success with their search. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Filthy Henry realises just how daft Cathal is upon learning about the bull's current location. The gang are educated on the unique properties of an Artefact and why the capital letter is important. Medb learns that just because situations change, The Rules stay the same. Dru the Druid strikes a once in a lifetime deal with the fairy detective. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Trug and Naul go and visit a man about a bull. Medb cannot understand why she simply cannot have all the things the way she wants them immediately. Cathal starts his training to be a hero while Filthy Henry skirts the legal line using a reference to another franchise. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The gang go back to Cathal's house and receive a grand tour decidedly lacking on the 'grand' side of things. Questions are raised about whether or not Cathal Cullen is the person they are meant to be working with. Medb gets reacquainted with Naul and Trug, while Lauren explains the plan to them all. Cathal, upon hearing what Shelly and Filthy Henry are in town to do, starts wondering who exactly is the more crazy person in his home. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Filthy Henry introduces Shelly and Dru to the wonders of magical travel, using his trademark 'tell them as little as possible' style of education. Medb starts to learn that the world she finds herself now in is stranger than the one she left behind. Cathal goes forth on a personal quest of great importance...but to whom? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Cullen family are introduced, as the matriarch of the clan tries to instill a sense of honour and pride in her eldest son. Medb meets her benefactor and learns why time travel is never as easy as the movies make out. Filthy Henry deals with the revelations dropped on him, before accepting the case. While Shelly and Dru find out just how important being part of a Trinity is. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Malcom stuck around for this episode as well and has his own story this time! Krysti leads off by intruding into Tori's usual genre by covering Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. This was established to alleviate the overcrowding of the cemeteries in the city proper. Many famous folks take their final rest at this locale. The Palmer masoleum and it's feeling of dread and cold, the Wolff grave, and Dexter Grave's grave with it's now famous statue Eternal Silence (take our advice, Google it). Inez Clarke's life size statue features in the stories as well. Tori covers Stull Cemetery 7 miles outside of Lawrence Kansas. This tiny village has a cemetery and a crumbling church (now a demolished church) which are the site of a gate of Hell. Welcome to Tropeland yet again folks. Also Tori fangirled with this one, featured in Supernatural “Swan Song.” #kidsaredicks yet again. Malcom covers Oweynagat, the “Cave of Cats” in Ireland. This is located in rural Ireland in Co. Roscommon. This is in a field and known as Rathcroghan which is a 5000 year old fissure that is the capital of Connact. Ogham stones adorn this cave stating “Fraech, son of Medb.” This is yet another “gate to hell.” Our Sources: Weird Illinois, Gracelandcemetery.org, Findagrave.com, The-line-up.com, Atlasobscura.com, Seekghosts.blogspot.com, Chicagohauntings.com, Chipublib.org, Questionable Knowledge Podcast, maps.roadtrippers.com, americanhauntingsink.com, Kansan.com, natgeo.com, irishcentral.com, wbur.org, rathcroghantours.comOur theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast Find us at FB/Instagram @TrendyLobotomyPod and at Twitter @TrendyPod as well as our blog trendylobotomypodcast.blogspot.com Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast?fan_landing=true)

Our favorite Celtic hero? Well, it's that kooky guy, of course! Join us for this and more mispronunciations of Celtic names as we continue to dive into Celtic mythology. This time, we look at stories of Cuchulainn, from the birth of the famous hero , to how he earned his name, and the tragedies of his son Connla and his friend Ferdia. We also look at the significance of pride and how one can make rash decisions due to mockery, as well as discussing the significance of Fairy and the unknown. Also, why is Medb spelled like that?
The Local Selection mix series this week comes from Cork Native Medb, who supplies us with a fantastic and deep hour of jungle, breaks and D&B to make this a great addition to our series. Currently residing in Australia, Medb recently blew us away with her guest mix for Kate Butler on the much loved @dublindigitalradio. Upon listening to her show, we simply had to request a mix for our series. While in Ireland she was part of the badass DJ duo Really Bad Mother's- [shout out to Bad Mother #2 Rachel] who earned their stripes playing the best in breaks, dubstep and all things bass music. Today she smashes our Wednesday afternoon with a back to back mix of experimental bass, beats and jungle. With tracks from Luke Vibert, LMajor and Om Unit, this local selector has no doubt got a serious selection of records we want to hear more of. In this fifth episode on Celtic mythology, I read the famous "pillow talk" between Queen Medb and King Ailill of Connacht. Their dispute over who owns more riches, land, and animals leads to the start of the famous Táin Bó Cúailnge/Cattle Raid of Cooley. The text of the story is taken from Thomas Kinsella's translation of The Táin. I also read a passage about Medb from James MacKillop's Oxford Dictionary of Celtic Mythology. Any comments, or suggestions for readings I should make in later episodes, can be emailed to humanvoiceswakeus1@gmail.com. I assume that the small amount of work presented in each episode constitutes fair use. We are talking about the Death of Medbh in this episode and we also talk about our online storytelling course. The storytelling course is 2 hours per week, Saturdays from 3-5 pm over 6 weeks, starting on the 9th of January. Each session will start with a short lecture on the day's theory topic, and the rest of the session is interactive practical exercises, exploring that aspect of storytelling that we have chosen. We are pricing it at €50 per class (so €300 in total) but if you are interested and struggling with finances we can talk about what you're able to afford (the world is mental at the moment so we want to include as many people as possible that would like to do this course). We will be using Irish myths as the material to practice on and play with throughout the course. Participants will be helped to choose a story or character to focus on, and will work on that story throughout the course, performing it at the end of the course. https://candlelittales.ie/product/storytelling-training-online-zoom/ Email us on candlelit.tales@gmail.com to reserve your spot. Fourth in our Death Series is the death of the Woman King herself, Medb of Connaught. Medb’s family was a strange one, and her infamous sister Clothru cast a long shadow. In later days, the kings of Ireland made every effort to trace their lineages back to her, however much her actions came under question. For her part, Medb chose to retire, as many great rulers did, passing on the throne of Connaught to her successor and going to live in peace and seclusion. But her past deeds, and her tangled family tree, came back to claim her in the end. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. On the week that saw the world said goodbye to civil rights hero John Hume, today’s guest and topic feel especially apt. Maev McDaid is a Derry woman in London, completing a PhD on retired Irish people in that city, as well as being very active in Clapton Community FC. On today’s podcast she talks to Darach and Peadar about the problems with “the UK” as a concept, and how the confusing term raises issues for researchers, policy makers and discussion of local and national issues. When a young woman like Medb leaves Derry to go to London, is that considered migration, immigration or not considered at all? Is it the same as a woman from Nottingham moving to London? If so, how do we measure the size of Irish communities in English cities? In the era of BLM when countries consider the relationship between citizens and the police in their state, referring to Britain or the UK can have significant differences. And yet, Britain and the UK are used interchangeably, to much frustration and distress. The gang also talk about football, much to Darach’s delight. --- Support Motherfocloir on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/darach Get Kirsten Shiel art prints here: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/kirstenshiel/ (https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/kirstenshiel/) --- Contact the show: twitter - @motherfocloir and @theirishfor email - motherfocloir@headstuff.org --- Want to record your own podcast? This time last year, I was struggling with what felt like an impossible task. I was asked to come up with a scripted screenplay for the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Roscommon. This short animation was commissioned by Nollaig Feeney, the Roscommon Heritage Officer and was a direct outcome of the Schools workshops undertaken in the county in support of the annual Tain March event. (I will be writing about this event in a subsequent post.) I was keen to tell part of the Fled Bricrenn story. There was a problem in that Bricriu's Feast is a long and complex text full of convolutions and duplication. It took Story Archaeology four full episodes to tell the story. I had created a telling adapting it for a modern audience and much loved by Primary aged children but it would be a huge challenge to condense it to under tn minutes. Eventually, I settled for telling only the section of the story that concerned Medb and Rathcroghan. As I am sure you are aware, and we soon discovered, animation is costly to produce and basic flash was all that the budget allowed for simple 2D graphics. I think that Pink Kong did a great job and we are pleased with the results. We had hope to make some of the children's poetry integral to the story telling but the script had to be kept tight. We managed to include a short selection along with the credits. The film was completed last October but was released this May at the culmination of the 2019 Tain March event. Our regular listeners will recognise that Medh is played by our own Isolde. We had fun getting the wheelchair into the recording booth but all went well eventually. I have now produced a full written and audio version of Bricriu's Feast for a family audience and this will be published shortly.
Medb, Queen of Connacht, is rightly renowned in Irish legend and mythology, as a strong and influential woman leader. Her centre of power, Cruachan Ai, is still recognised as one of the most important Iron-age sites in Ireland. Medb lead her people in her own name and by her own right. She was a strong woman in a society largely dominated by strong men. She fought hard to maintain the high status of her rule throughout her long life but the choices she made, as always happens, had consequences. This audio-article endeavours to discover some something of Medb the woman, as she can be found in the old Irish texts? What choices did she have to make to protect her land and people and how did she come to terms with the consequences of those choices? It is an interesting story. This audio article is based on a presentation given for an on-line conference hosted by Vyvianne Armstrong. This conference is entitled Medb, Intoxication and Initiation. This is one of a series of upcoming conferences. If you would like to find out more, contact Vyviane at vyviane@landseaskytravel.com Music: A Trip to Emain by Gian Costello

As any Caoimhe, Siobhán or Medb living abroad will tell you, Gaeilge uses different spelling conventions to Béarla. Students who struggle with this might be interested to hear more about Manx, the Gaelic language of the Isle of Man, which uses English language phonetics. Manx also has the distinction of being declared dead and interrupting its own funeral. Conchúir or Conchobar mac Nessa (son of Ness) was the king of Ulster in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology. He ruled from Emain Macha (Navan Fort, near Armagh). There are several versions of how Conchobar was conceived. In the earliest, Ness, daughter of Eochaid Sálbuide, the then king of Ulster, asks the druid Cathbad what it is an auspicious time for. Cathbad replies, "for begetting a king on a queen". There are no other men around, so Ness takes Cathbad to bed and conceives a son. In a later version, Ness is brought up by twelve foster-fathers, and while all twelve are at a feast, Cathbad, leading a fian or landless war-band, attacks the house and kills them all. Eochaid is unable to avenge them as the culprit cannot be identified, so Ness forms her own fian to hunt Cathbad down. But while she is bathing alone in a pool, Cathbad appears, stands between her and her weapons, and bares his sword. He spares her life on the condition that she becomes his wife. They settle near a river called Conchobar, and Ness soon conceives a son, but in this version the father is the High King Fachtna Fáthach, who is Ness's lover. As she and Cathbad set out to visit Fachtna, Ness goes into labour. Cathbad tells her if she can manage not to give birth until the following day, her son will be a great king and have everlasting fame, for he will be born on the same day as Jesus Christ. Ness sits on a flagstone by the river Conchobar, and the following morning gives birth. The baby falls into the river, but Cathbad lifts him out, names him Conchobar after the river, and brings him up as his own son. Conchobar becomes king By the time Conchobar is seven, Fergus mac Róich is king of Ulster, and falls in love with Ness. She agrees to become his wife, on one condition: that Fergus allows Conchobar to be king for a year, so his children will be called the sons of a king (under Medieval Irish law inheritance passed through the male line, and only those who had a king as a male-line ancestor were eligible for kingship). The nobles of Ulster advise Fergus that this will not affect his standing with them, as the boy will be king in name only, so he agrees. But Conchobar, advised by his mother, rules so well that by the end of the year it's decided he should be king permanently. Fergus makes an alliance with the new High King, Eochu Feidlech, and they make war on Ulster. After a series of bloody battles, Conchobar makes overtures for peace. Fergus is offered land, the Champion's Portion at Emain Macha, and the position of Conchobar's heir. Conchobar demands compensation from Eochu for the killing of his father, Fachtna Fáthach, and is granted land, status and the High King's daughter in marriage. Marriages and family Conchobar marries several of Eochu's daughters. Medb, later queen of Connacht, is the first. She bears him a son called Amalgad, but soon leaves him. Her sister Eithne conceives a son by him, but Medb murders her by drowning her in a stream. Her son Furbaide is delivered by posthumous Caesarian section. Mugain bears him a son called Glaisne and remains his chief wife. The mother of Conchobar's eldest son, Cormac Cond Longas, is either Eochu's daughter Clothru or Conchobar's own mother Ness. Cormac is given to Fergus mac Róich to foster. His other sons include Cúscraid Mend Macha and Folloman. His daughter Fedelm Noíchrothach marries Cairbre Nia Fer, King of Tara, and they have a son, Erc, and a daughter, Achall. Conchobar has two sisters, Findchóem [8] and Deichtine. Findchóem marries the poet Amergin, and they have a son, Conall Cernach. Deichtine is the mother of Cú Chulainn, by either her mortal husband Sualtam or the god Lugh.
Cú Chulainn, also spelt Cú Chulaind or Cúchulainn, Irish for "Culann's Hound") and sometimes known in English as Cuhullin is an Irish mythological hero who appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, as well as in Scottish and Manx folklore. The son of the god Lugh and Deichtine (sister of Conchobar mac Nessa), his childhood name was Sétanta. He gained his better-known name as a child after he killed Culann's fierce guard-dog in self-defence and offered to take its place until a replacement could be reared. At the age of seventeen he defended Ulster single-handedly against the armies of queen Medb of Connacht in the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge ("Cattle Raid of Cooley"). It was prophesied that his great deeds would give him everlasting fame, but that his life would be a short one. For this reason he is compared to the Greek hero Achilles. He is known for his terrifying battle frenzy, or ríastrad (translated by Thomas Kinsella as "warp spasm" and by Ciaran Carson as "torque", in which he becomes an unrecognisable monster who knows neither friend nor foe. He fights from his chariot, driven by his loyal charioteer Láeg and drawn by his horses, Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend. In more modern times, Cú Chulainn is often referred to as the "Hound of Ulster". Cú Chulainn shows striking similarities to the Persian epic hero Rostam, as well as to the Germanic Lay of Hildebrand and the labours of the Greek epic hero Hercules, suggesting a common Indo-European origin, but lacking in linguistic, anthropological and archaeological material. Táin Bó Cúailnge, "the driving-off of cows of Cooley", commonly known as The Cattle Raid of Cooley or The Táin is a legendary tale from early Irish literature, often considered an epic, although it is written primarily in prose rather than verse. It tells of a war against Ulster by the Connacht queen Medb and her husband Ailill, who intend to steal the stud bull Donn Cuailnge, opposed only by the teenage Ulster hero Cú Chulainn. Traditionally set in the 1st century AD in an essentially pre-Christian heroic age, the Táin is the central text of a group of tales known as the Ulster Cycle. It survives in three written versions or "recensions" in manuscripts of the 12th and later centuries, the first a compilation largely written in Old Irish, the second a more consistent work in Middle Irish, and the third an Early Modern Irish version. The Táin is preceded by a number of remscéla, or pre-tales, which provide background on the main characters and explain the presence of certain characters from Ulster in the Connacht camp, the curse that causes the temporary inability of the remaining Ulstermen to fight and the magic origins of the bulls Donn Cuailnge and Finnbhennach. The eight remscéla chosen by Thomas Kinsella for his 1969 translation are sometimes taken to be part of the Táin itself, but come from a variety of manuscripts of different dates. Several other tales exist which are described as remscéla to the Táin, some of which have only a tangential relation to it. Source: Wikipedia
Inis Clothrann, the largest island of Lough Ree, Co. Longford, is famous for more than just its venerable monastic remains. It was here that Medb of Crúachán would bathe in the island's well in fulfilment of a geis, imposed for killing at least one of her sisters. It was at this same well she met her death.
