My name is Al, (0:00:37) Bev: And my name is Bev. (0:00:39) Al: and we are here today to talk about cottagecore games. Well, okay, well, we are going to talk about cottagecore games, but there’s also going to be one game, which is not a cottagecore game, (0:00:49) Al: that we’re going to talk about. I’m not really sure why we’re covering this game, but we’re going to cover spells and secrets. We’re not going to talk about it just now, because… (0:00:51) Bev: Uh-huh. (0:00:58) Bev: Whoo! (0:01:00) Al: I’m going to leave the fun review for the end. But yeah, we’re going to talk about that game, (0:01:03) Bev: Uh-huh. (0:01:07) Bev: Yes. (0:01:07) Al: the non-transphobic wizard game. (0:01:09) Bev: Indeed. (0:01:11) Bev: It’s not that hard. (0:01:14) Al: Also, apparently, the non-holocaust denial one as well. (0:01:17) Bev: Oh my goodness. (0:01:19) Bev: Don’t even get me. (0:01:21) Bev: It just truly, it’s unfathomable how it could possibly get worse, (0:01:21) Al: It just gets worse and worse. (0:01:25) Bev: but here we are. (0:01:27) Bev: She just continues to die on this hill. (0:01:29) Bev: The hill just gets higher and higher. (0:01:31) Al: All right, excellent. Well, transcripts for this podcast are available in the show notes and on the website. As I said, we’re going to talk about spells and secrets. Before that, (0:01:33) Bev: and higher. (0:01:47) Al: we have quite a lot of news this week. I feel like we’ve entered a period of news, because last week there was a lot of news, and then this week there’s a lot of news. So I guess we’ll see whether that that continues or not, but I’m not complaining. (0:01:59) Bev: Well, it is March, so I feel like this is, (0:02:03) Bev: like it’s cottagecore season. (0:02:06) Bev: So I think it’s just spring, it’s just that time. (0:02:08) Al: Sure. (0:02:13) Al: Well, here’s a question for you. (0:02:15) Al: Maybe this explains it. (0:02:17) Al: GDC is next week. (0:02:21) Bev: Wait, what did you see? (0:02:21) Al: So the Game Developer Conference is a big, big indie games conference. (0:02:26) Bev: Oh, is that supposed to be E3 or something else? (0:02:30) Al: No, no, no, no, no, it’s a big– (0:02:32) Al: It’s mostly, it’s more indie than E3. (0:02:35) Bev: Interesting. (0:02:35) Al: Although E3 is dead, but yeah, it’s a bit, it’s a big thing, like I think it kind of got big when (0:02:42) Al: like Minecraft was around, like there was a lot of stuff around GDC with Minecraft and yeah, it tends to be more, (0:02:51) Al: more indie games than, than big ones. (0:02:55) Bev: Okay, and we know cottagecore is very indie mm-hmm [laughing] (0:02:58) Al: Oh yes. (0:03:02) Al: So yeah, I suspect that might be why it’s so busy just now because everyone’s getting all the news out just before GDZ. (0:03:13) Al: Yeah, cool. So maybe there’ll be lots of news for next week as well. We’ll see. (0:03:19) Al: So before the news, however, Bev, what have you been up to? (0:03:26) Bev: I have been, I mean, I’ve been spells and secrets, I’ve been playing Pokemon Emerald because I am, I am trying to do a ribbon challenge through Colosseum, which is fun and has its challenges. (0:03:46) Bev: I have, I mean, fun, I would, I would say fun. (0:03:48) Al: Yeah, do you mean actual fun or like fun? (0:03:56) Bev: I’ve been playing Pokemon Emerald for a while since I’ve played these games so it’s, it’s enjoyable to get back into them. (0:04:01) Bev: I also have a fancy new Game Boy Advance that has a like lit up screen and like little buttons and stuff. (0:04:08) Bev: So I spent more than I would like to share, getting a custom like upgraded or a custom like modern one. (0:04:17) Bev: So playing on that’s very, what’s, what’s the word? (0:04:23) Bev: Words are hard today. (0:04:23) Al: Nice. (0:04:24) Bev: Very nice. (0:04:25) Bev: There you go. (0:04:26) Bev: That’s okay. (0:04:26) Al: It’s not a word that works for many things. (0:04:27) Bev: Uh huh. (0:04:28) Bev: It is. (0:04:28) Al: It tends to not be a great word to use, (0:04:29) Bev: Mm hmm. (0:04:30) Bev: Mm hmm. (0:04:31) Al: but I think it’s a nice experience. (0:04:31) Bev: And I’m traveling for work starting tomorrow and traveling with a Game Boy Advance is so much nicer because it’s so much smaller than the seam neck or in this one. (0:04:33) Al: I think that’s a good way to use that word is when you’re talking about it. (0:04:51) Bev: So looking forward to shaving off some weight for my. (0:04:56) Bev: travels tomorrow. (0:04:56) Al: Fair enough. Cool. (0:04:59) Bev: Oh, and Twisted One New Land as, as well, which we’ve discussed last time. (0:05:02) Al: Oh, that was that weird, that weird, like an anime Disney, not really Disney, kind of Disney. (0:05:10) Bev: It’s so good anime pretty boy villains. (0:05:14) Bev: Yes. (0:05:15) Bev: That’s uh huh. (0:05:17) Al: Yeah, I know. Okay. I say kind of Disney. I don’t mean like not official. I mean, like It’s Disney, but (0:05:17) Bev: It is Disney. (0:05:18) Bev: It’s Disney Japan. (0:05:19) Bev: Uh huh. (0:05:27) Al: not really Disney characters. (0:05:29) Bev: » Not mainstreamed. (0:05:30) Al: Although I guess technically they are Disney characters, because it’s a Disney game. (0:05:32) Bev: » They are, exactly. (0:05:33) Al: But it’s just like, it’s all, look, it’s weird, right? (0:05:36) Al: I’m not sure which is weirder, right? (0:05:38) Al: But I can tell you that the two weirdest things that Disney have ever done are this and Kingdom Hearts. (0:05:45) Al: And I don’t know which is weirder. (0:05:47) Bev: I think that’s up to for debate. I yeah, but yeah, they’re based off of real characters and it’s like descendants. So there’s I some of them are and some of them are just modeled after them with like their ideals. Because in the game they are their story is twisted to make them (0:05:51) Al: Yeah. (0:05:57) Al: Sure. (0:05:58) Al: Although they’re meant to be descendants of the characters. (0:06:13) Al: Whoa. (0:06:17) Bev: as the protagonist instead of the antagonist. So the main character like gets to see like flashbacks to like a different like a you like alternate universe where it’s the villains we know. And this like main character like you as a player is like what’s happening here? This is not how the story goes if London goes. So I don’t know there’s there’s some there’s some lore in there which I appreciate, it’s fun. (0:06:44) Al: I’ll be totally honest with you. I wasn’t expecting no lore in this game, right? Like if, if there’s anything I was expecting, it was lower. I will say however, that every time you talk to me about this game, it seems weirder, but I’m never any closer to trying (0:06:53) Bev: Uh-huh. (0:07:02) Bev: That’s valid. (0:07:04) Bev: I will say, I wouldn’t necessarily, like, (0:07:08) Bev: be unsurprised that there’s lore, (0:07:10) Bev: because Disney Lorkana, the trading card game, (0:07:12) Bev: has, like, very little lore in comparison for a trading card game, (0:07:17) Bev: and I’m a bit upset about that, (0:07:19) Bev: considering there’s so much they could be doing with that, (0:07:22) Bev: because it’s essentially like a multiverse of characters that they’re introducing with the trading card game. (0:07:27) Bev: But I digress. (0:07:28) Al: I don’t know if I want to touch this so (0:07:32) Bev: Lorkana. (0:07:34) Bev: Because it’s dangerous. (0:07:36) Al: Well, I just, I’ve like, oh goodness, here we go. (0:07:40) Al: I haven’t, haven’t heard of it. (0:07:41) Al: It sounds like more nonsense. (0:07:45) Bev: Oh, you haven’t heard of it. (0:07:46) Al: No, a Disney treat. (0:07:47) Bev: GG. (0:07:48) Bev: So Disney has its own. (0:07:49) Bev: Yes. (0:07:50) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:07:51) Bev: And actually, this is this. (0:07:53) Bev: They just launched a new one with Star Wars, as well. (0:07:56) Al: Yeah, I heard about that. (0:07:56) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:07:57) Al: I heard about the the Star Wars one and went. (0:07:58) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:08:00) Al: Yeah, I’m not getting into that. (0:08:01) Bev: Yeah, I’m not getting into that one, but… (0:08:04) Bev: Lorkana is… (0:08:06) Bev: I’ve really enjoyed it. (0:08:08) Bev: If you’re a Disney fan, I think it’s pretty easy to get into the arts really good, unsurprisingly, (0:08:15) Bev: and they’re having a lot of fun. (0:08:17) Bev: This is a game that I’ve worked with, creating “dream born” characters, so you can have, like, a “Belly Inventor” or “Cinderella of the Night” dressed up as a night. (0:08:26) Bev: So they’re introducing characters you know, but in different storylines, or different arcs that they could be theoretically experiencing. (0:08:37) Bev: And it’s meant to be very approachable, like Pokémon is the Pokémon TCG. (0:08:47) Bev: I’ve gotten my partner to play with it to get into it, and I will not complain if I can get them into a TCG, so I’m having a lot of fun roping them into those. (0:09:00) Al: Okay. I just, I mean, I definitely do not need more trading card games. (0:09:01) Bev: Uh-huh. But… (0:09:05) Bev: You don’t, it’s expensive, it’s dangerous, I don’t, it’s fine, don’t. I’ll do you, and then we can play. Eventually, whenever I see you. (0:09:14) Al: I… well, this is the thing. I think, I think… yeah, well, I presume there’s no app for this. It’s just… well, for sure. For sure they will have one, though. (0:09:17) Bev: Not yet. I’m assuming they will be, but there isn’t, and they’re now announcing they haven’t announced that they will have one, but we’ll see. (0:09:27) Bev: I know, it’s just a matter of time. (0:09:29) Al: Whether it’s like recreating everything, or whether it’s, you know, like a Marvel Snap type thing, a more streamlined version or whatever, but… (0:09:33) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:09:35) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:09:38) Al: See, this is the problem is I’m more likely to buy these things when (0:09:44) Al: people… like, when I… the one thing I miss about working in an office was that we had a magic tournament in one of the offices, and it was good fun, especially as we had, like, we did a… (0:09:57) Al: what’s the word? Where you have, like, a certain number of packs, and you pass the packs around. (0:10:03) Bev: Oh draft? Ah so good. (0:10:04) Al: What’s that called? A draft. We had a draft, and you couldn’t buy more cards, so it was, like, (0:10:10) Al: basically a fixed cost buy-in for each season. (0:10:14) Al: Yeah, exactly, exactly. It was just a new set. We did a draft all at the same time and, you know, the tournament that we had basically lasted as long as that set lasted and it was good fun. (0:10:16) Bev: Yeah those were always my favorite events because it was very straightforward and you didn’t really need to come in with anything prior to that. (0:10:34) Bev: Mm-hmm (0:10:36) Al: I mean, it wasn’t fun enough to mean that I would go back and work in an office. I’m not doing that again, but it was good fun. (0:10:36) Bev: Mm-hmm (0:10:44) Al: Whereas now I’m just like, “Oh, yeah, I’ll buy 100 pounds worth of Pokémon cards.” And then I’m like, “Great, I got my Pokémon cards. Look at how shiny they are.” (0:10:52) Bev: uh-huh (0:10:55) Al: So I go on and off. I just bought a whole bunch of the 151 expansion, which there’s a lot of nice cards there, but I spent way too much money on that. (0:11:02) Bev: Okay, I know I’m (0:11:07) Al: And now I’m like, “Okay, I’ve spent enough money. I’m going to stop now and then probably in 18 months I’ll do the same again.” (0:11:11) Bev: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yes, I’m trying very hard not to buy any Pokemon cards because I don’t need to collect any more. And with Lorkana, I decided I will collect the first two sets and that’s it. And then Ursula cards and maybe like Ursula adjacent cards. Yeah. (0:11:14) Al: And for another set. (0:11:26) Al: Yeah, I think I would be more likely to complete sets if they were smaller, like the 25th anniversary set for Pokémon, I completed that one, and the two Halloween ones, I’ve done both of them, because they’re all reasonably small. (0:11:42) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:11:43) Bev: Right. (0:11:44) Bev: And then like 50 of them are secret rares or something ridiculous like that. (0:11:49) Al: But this one is like 270 cards. (0:11:52) Al: Yeah, exactly! (0:11:56) Al: Exactly, and it’s like if you don’t get them, they cost like 100 quid each, it’s not worth it. (0:11:57) Bev: Yeah. (0:11:58) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:11:59) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:11:59) Bev: - Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. (0:12:02) Al: I think I had a look, I think the trading card app I have is quite nice in that you click on a set and it tells you the market value of the whole set if you were just to buy them all as singles, and I’m just loading it up because it is ridiculous, it’s always ridiculous. So the market value for… (0:12:14) Bev: Oh wow, okay. (0:12:17) Bev: And it’s ridiculous. (0:12:18) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:12:26) Al: And I don’t want to tell you how much money I spent on it, but it’s more than that. Let’s put it that way. So yeah, basically I’ve got all the cheap cards and I don’t have the expensive cards, and it’s like that’s not fun. (0:12:42) Bev: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. (0:12:51) Bev: Yeah, that’s why I stopped collecting it. (0:12:54) Bev: ‘Cause I think middle, or a couple sets in Descent of Moon, (0:12:58) Bev: and they just kept increasing the number of secret rare, (0:13:00) Bev: so I was just like, this is not sustainable. (0:13:03) Bev: It’s just no longer fun trying to actually collect a set, (0:13:07) Bev: and that’s one of my biggest grapes with the new Star Wars one. (0:13:11) Al: Uh-huh (0:13:12) Bev: They’ve done it even worse, unfortunately. (0:13:14) Al: Yeah (0:13:17) Bev: Have you looked into that at all, or? (0:13:20) Bev: So they have secret rares of each and every card, (0:13:28) Bev: and the likelihood of pulling one of those cards, (0:13:31) Bev: I think it’s like one out of 20 booster boxes. (0:13:36) Al: that what whatever it is whatever it is like as soon as as soon as the chance is like more than one in five booster boxes like that there’s just no point at that point right like (0:13:37) Bev: Or something crazy, it might be 12, I don’t know. (0:13:40) Bev: It’s like a really high number of boxes. (0:13:42) Bev: It’s ridiculous. (0:13:46) Bev: Yeah. (0:13:49) Bev: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, yep. (0:13:52) Bev: And I was happy with Lorkana, ‘cause the first two sets, (0:13:54) Bev: it only had 12 secret rares, (0:13:56) Bev: and I was like, this is reasonable. (0:13:59) Bev: And I’m not gonna try to collect it, (0:14:01) Bev: ‘cause Elsa, I think currently is like 800 for your market, (0:14:06) Bev: but that’s the most expensive card right now. (0:14:09) Bev: But then with the third set that they released this month, (0:14:12) Bev: they doubled the number of secret rares. (0:14:14) Bev: I’m like, please stop. (0:14:16) Al: I just want, yeah, I just, I just want, I only want the full art cards, right? (0:14:16) Bev: I don’t like this trend. (0:14:19) Bev: I was happy with 12. (laughs) (0:14:26) Al: Cause they’re the best ones, right? (0:14:27) Bev: Yeah. (0:14:28) Al: So how about we just get rid of all the other cards and we just do the secret rares, right? (0:14:34) Al: Like, cause this is the thing, like I’m not doing it to have rare cards. (0:14:38) Al: I’m not doing it to sell cards. (0:14:38) Bev: Mm-hm. (0:14:39) Al: I’m doing it to have the cards. (0:14:41) Al: Cause I love how they look and I love going, look at my lovely cards. (0:14:42) Bev: Mm-hm. (0:14:44) Bev: Mm-hm, they’re pretty. (0:14:45) Al: And now I’m like, I got. (0:14:46) Al: How many have I got? (0:14:47) Al: I have. (0:14:50) Al: I have four secret rares of. (0:14:52) Bev: nice. Okay. Like, it’s like 20. It’s like at least 25. (0:14:54) Al: Of how many? (0:14:57) Al: It’s it’s no one always is way more than that for this set. (0:15:01) Al: So 207 minus 165, 42. (0:15:07) Al: So I have four of 42 secret rares. (0:15:09) Bev: My goodness (0:15:12) Bev: And then you have Star Wars that’s like 200 (0:15:15) Al: And you’re just like, it’s just not even worth it. (0:15:16) Bev: It’s not it’s not it doesn’t make it enjoyable (0:15:17) Al: It’s not worth it. (0:15:18) Al: Nope. (0:15:20) Bev: So at this point, they’re just marketing your people to play the actual TCG, which maybe is where they’re getting all their money (0:15:26) Bev: but you could easily keep the collectors in if you didn’t make it so unreasonable to collect [laughs] (0:15:32) Al: Yeah, well this is the thing right if I could spend like so there’s what like three sets a year something like that (0:15:40) Bev: uh for pokemon yeah because it’s every three months or so well that’s about four um depending on how they line at least the last time I looked into it was both (0:15:49) Al: Yeah, so (0:15:52) Al: So if I mean if I if I could legitimately spend like 100 to 150 pounds each set and get the entire collection I would probably do that. I would feel bad about myself because that’s a lot of money on random bits of paper, right? (0:15:57) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:16:00) Bev: Yeah. (0:16:03) Al: I’m not trying to say it’s not but but 600 pounds (0:16:03) Bev: But it’s better. (0:16:04) Bev: It’s reasonable. (0:16:07) Bev: No. (0:16:07) Al: It’s it’s not even possible to do one set a year. Never mind all of them (0:16:09) Bev: Yeah. (0:16:10) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:16:12) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:16:14) Al: Anyway, right that’s enough complaining about trading card games. I love and hate them (0:16:19) Bev: Same. (0:16:19) Al: And that is how it is (0:16:22) Bev: Yes, indeed. (0:16:24) Al: I I have been oh, is that you don’t? (0:16:24) Bev: But, uh. (0:16:28) Bev: » I, yes, I was just about to ask you what you’ve been playing. (0:16:31) Bev: Around the same wavelength. (0:16:32) Al: I have also been playing Spells and Secrets, but other than that, I have played and finished the new Mario vs Donkey Kong game, which was very fun. I hadn’t played the original, but this was very fun. I 100%ed it, and it definitely was worth the money. It was good fun. Lots of fun challenges. The physics is a little bit weird when you’ve just been playing a normal Mario 2D platformer, but after a while you get used to it, and it’s fine. (0:16:35) Bev: Mm-hm. (0:16:58) Bev: Aha. (0:17:01) Bev: Okay, okay. (0:17:02) Al: It’s not that it’s bad physics, it’s just different, and you’re like, “This isn’t how Mario moves. Why are you doing this?” But it was okay. I got used to that, and I had good fun. There was only one level that I actively hated, and it was just the worst level. I hated it so much. The rest were good. And yeah, completed that. (0:17:05) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:17:18) Bev: Hmm (0:17:21) Bev: That’s pretty good only one level I feel like it’s pretty good for like a platformer [laughs] (0:17:24) Al: Yeah, yeah, yeah. There were a few that, you know, made me put my switch down for a couple (0:17:32) Al: hours and come back to it in the evening sort of thing, but there was only one that I was like, “This is just a bad level, and I hate it.” So yeah, I finished that, and then I got back into playing Luigi’s Mansion 3, because I’d started that last year, and I hadn’t really got very far and put it down. And I was like, “You know what? I’m going to try it again. If I don’t get into it this time, I’m done. I’m going to sell it. Move on.” And I did get back into it. So I have an interesting relationship with this game. (0:17:34) Bev: Mm-hmm (0:18:01) Al: I don’t dislike it. (0:18:02) Al: But I don’t love it. (0:18:05) Al: I like the puzzles. (0:18:07) Al: I think the puzzles are fun. (0:18:09) Al: I think the setting is obviously very fun and there’s lots of kind of very, very good creativity in the designs of a lot of the bosses and that sort of stuff and all the levels are very fun. (0:18:20) Al: I hate the controls. (0:18:23) Al: It is just really confusing 3D controls because the whole point of it is you’re in a 3D world and you’re aiming in (0:18:28) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:18:32) Al: two dimensions but like two axes. And I just feel like the controls are very confusing in some cases. It’s like you press one button to aim, and then suddenly you have to use a different stick to finish the aiming. And it’s like one of the buttons that you press to aim is on the same side as the stick. There’s not another way you can use that. I’m trying to, like, contort my hand into a way (0:19:03) Al: that I can actually do this. So that’s not great. I don’t feel like the controls are great. (0:19:05) Bev: Uh-huh (0:19:08) Al: Some of it I don’t think is possible to fix. Like, some of it is just, “Oh, (0:19:13) Al: it’s just going to be awkward trying to aim in a 3D environment full stop.” Right? That’s life. (0:19:20) Al: But some of it I feel, like, could be fixed. And yeah, it’s not great. But it’s not enough (0:19:26) Bev: I could see that. (0:19:28) Al: to make me not want to play the game. So that… (0:19:31) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:19:34) Bev: Okay, I can understand that. (0:19:36) Bev: I, that’s, that is one of my games that I have to, (0:19:39) Bev: that’s in my backlog to finish. (0:19:41) Bev: I think I have it on, it’s on Switch, right? (0:19:45) Bev: Okay, I think I, I might have it on Switch. (0:19:49) Bev: I originally had it on GameCube, but as a child, (0:19:53) Bev: I was too scared of the ghost. (0:19:56) Bev: I never finished it for that reason and then when I came to switch I think the same thing like when I am playing it I am enjoying it but it’s like hard to get into if I’m not if it’s not already like on my screen. (0:20:13) Al: Yeah, so I hope I get it finished before Stardew 1.6 comes out on Tuesday, (0:20:17) Al: because otherwise it’ll probably be another couple of months before I get back into it, (0:20:20) Al: because I’ll be playing Stardew, and then Princess Peach comes out on Friday. (0:20:25) Al: Too many games. But that’s fine. (0:20:26) Bev: Mm, always too many. (0:20:30) Al: Yeah. Lastly, I have been doing some Animal Crossing LEGO. So I bought all of the Animal crossing lego sets and for the podcast, obviously, you know. (0:20:44) Al: We’ll talk about them in a future episode, probably, but I guess so far I’ve built two of them and I’ve started a third one. And I mean, I will say I’m not sure they are the best value for money in terms of pieces. They are quite small sets for the amount of money that they cost. I suspect that’s, you (0:21:10) Bev: it sounds about right (0:21:13) Al: know, the general tax, right? Yeah, I mean, it’s not, I mean, (0:21:15) Bev: and it could also be like geared towards like a younger age group (0:21:23) Bev: I mean that’s what it looks like to me like the style looks very simplistic (0:21:23) Al: it would be Duplo if they were doing that, you know. I think the style is fun. I think, I think they’re nice well put together sets and I am enjoying building them. I just feel like (0:21:39) Bev: Yeah. (0:21:41) Bev: Yeah. (0:21:42) Bev: Oh my goodness $75 for 535 Legos. (0:21:45) Bev: Yeah, that’s Mm-hmm. (0:21:45) Al: - Exactly, like they’re not cheap, but. (0:21:48) Bev: No like 75 like, you know 10 20 years ago would have bought me the full Hogwarts castle. (0:21:58) Bev: So yeah, this is it’s a different time I guess but still that’s that’s a lot. (0:22:01) Al: Well, I need I do know there’s some like there’s someone has like a list of all of them and their price per piece. So I need to I need to check compared to the other sets. (0:22:08) Bev: Oh, wow. Okay. (0:22:09) Bev: Oh. (0:22:14) Al: But oh, this one’s just a calculator that’s I can do a count. I can do a divide by I’m not. (0:22:23) Al: So apparently. Did it. (0:22:24) Bev: But have someone else do it for you, though. (0:22:26) Bev: Like. (0:22:31) Al: So I was that I was 80 right for 500. (0:22:36) Al: Which is so it’s 16 cents per piece. And it looks like the so someone posted two years ago, (0:22:45) Al: average price per piece for various themes. Star Wars is at 10. Minecraft is at nine. (0:22:51) Al: Marvel’s at 10. Harry Potter’s at nine. Classic is at six. City is at 12. So it is expensive. (0:22:58) Bev: Mm-hmm it’s more niche not that the others aren’t niche but it doesn’t yeah especially after 2020 [coughing] (0:23:01) Al: It is more niche. It doesn’t need to be nice, right? Like I think Animal Crossing is is big. (0:23:09) Al: Like it’s not as. Yeah, it’s not as big as the four those four that I mentioned, right? Obviously. (0:23:16) Al: But I still feel like like 16 cents per piece. That’s nearly double. (0:23:22) Al: Minecraft, right? It’s not. I just it feels not great. So I would. (0:23:31) Al: Not recommend necessarily people buy it unless you have a lot of money to buy on these things. (0:23:38) Al: Like it was perfect timing for me because I had saved up enough for the new switch. (0:23:42) Bev: Ooh… (0:23:43) Al: And then the rumors are, oh, the new switch is delayed till next year. And I went, oh, (0:23:47) Al: what am I going to do with this money then? Because I can I can definitely save in a year in a year’s time. I can save up again for that switch. Right. That’s not difficult. (0:23:50) Bev: Uh-huh. (0:23:52) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:23:55) Al: So I was like, well, let’s buy this animal crossing Lego that’s just coming out then. (0:24:00) Bev: Mm-hmm. That’s how they get you, Al. Uh-huh. Yep. Mm-hmm. They knew. They knew people were saving and they would be upset about the delay and would spend the money. Yes. (0:24:01) Al: That is how they get you. That’s exactly why they did it. They were like, we cannot release a switch and Animal Crossing Lego at the same time. So we will. Yeah. So there we go. (0:24:19) Al: You got my money both times. Congratulations, Nintendo. Shall we talk about some news? (0:24:27) Al: Ever After Falls have announced that they know when the game is releasing. (0:24:31) Al: I will quote “We have finally settled on the release date, which will be later this year. (0:24:40) Al: The additional console versions have pushed back the release date (0:24:44) Al: another couple of months. We are planning a simultaneous launch across all platforms.” (0:24:52) Al: I do apologize for yet again to any backers disappointed by this further delay. (0:24:57) Al: The additional time does allow me the time I need to work on some additional content for the game. (0:25:02) Al: Ever After Falls will be launching this summer on all Steam platforms, (0:25:07) Al: Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Xbox, (0:25:12) Bev: this is not really well written later this year and then this summer like say it’s this summer (0:25:16) Al: It’s not. So yeah, so probably September. That’s my current assumption. (0:25:26) Bev: also an announcement about a maybe announcement um it’s not even an announcement an announcement it’s some announcement that we’ve made a decision but we’re not sharing so it’s (0:25:36) Al: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We’ve made a decision, but we’re not telling you, but it’s this year, (0:25:42) Al: but also it’s summer. It’s like just slowly narrowing it down. I was expecting, if they had another paragraph, they would accidentally tell us the date. (0:25:49) Bev: Right, right. (0:25:51) Bev: Like I could see, I could see the need for this, (0:25:54) Bev: but why is this on Steam and not on, (0:25:57) Bev: was this a Kickstarter? (0:25:58) Al: It was a Kickstarter. (0:26:00) Bev: So this, like I reckon, like, (0:26:02) Bev: especially after discovering spells and secrets behind a Kickstarter wall, (0:26:07) Bev: like a project update after the last time we talked, (0:26:13) Bev: but I appreciate them. (0:26:15) Bev: Being transparent and sharing it publicly, but it’s also just not any information, really. (0:26:22) Al: Yeah. Yeah, that’s fair. I do. It is a good question, though. Like, why have they not put it up on the Kickstarter as well? Because that does certainly feel like, well, this is me just checking because I don’t because I did back them. Of course I did. I back them all because I am a sucker. I don’t remember seeing it on Kickstarter. No, they did not. (0:26:32) Bev: Oh, they didn’t! (0:26:38) Bev: Okay. (0:26:40) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:26:42) Bev: You gotta do it. (0:26:45) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:26:46) Bev: It sounds like they didn’t. (0:26:49) Al: they haven’t posted on Kickstarter. (0:26:49) Bev: Like, this is their backer update, but they decided to just post it on Steam instead. (0:26:56) Al: Yeah, I mean, maybe they just forgot, and they’ll do it next week when they remember. (0:26:59) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:27:00) Al: I don’t know, but… (0:27:00) Bev: Or have a separate one with more info (0:27:02) Bev: For the backers, who knows ‘Cause summer’s not that far away now Like, we’re middle of March (0:27:08) Al: Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, it was meant to come out two years ago. So we’ll see what happens. (0:27:14) Bev: Okay Mmhmm (0:27:16) Al: March 2022 was their initial date on the Kickstarter. So, you know, two and a half years wouldn’t be ridiculous for some of these. I’m pretty sure this is just one person working on it other than the porting the porting. (0:27:31) Bev: mm-hmm yeah and that’s fine like well it you and I I think agree we’ll wait as long as we need to to make it good um and I don’t know I just an update about a maybe about a decision (0:27:48) Al: Yeah, an announcement about an announcement, but not an announcement. An announcement about a theoretical announcement. At some point in the future, maybe. (0:27:54) Bev: uh-huh yes there we go a theoretical and maybe someday (0:28:02) Al: Why are GTA VI and Tears of the Kingdom both trending on Twitter? Who knows. I can’t see (0:28:02) Bev: mm-hmm (0:28:05) Bev: uh-oh why have they I can’t I mean would it be like DLC or anything like that (0:28:16) Al: No, it’s not DLC. I can’t see anything. (0:28:18) Bev: okay okay (0:28:22) Al: Moonglow Bay have announced that their PlayStation and Switch versions will be releasing on the 11th of April alongside the Picture Perfect update. This update will include new content and features such as decorating your home garden, a new story quest line to solve an ancient mystery, (0:28:44) Al: Camera mode and (0:28:44) Bev: I love how just sitting on benches always ends up into an update or sitting on chairs. (0:28:57) Bev: It’s just a thing that people want apparently. (0:28:59) Bev: I don’t quite understand it, but yes. (0:28:59) Al: for some reason. Who knows? (0:29:04) Al: Fafarm 2.2, their spring update, which is the next of their free updates. It’s not the next of their paid updates. This is going to be releasing on the tomorrow, if you’re listening to this on release day, Thursday the 21st of March. We don’t have much information about that. They say that patch notes (0:29:24) Bev: Okay. Oh. Oh, bye. Yes. I got excited. I wanted to read about it. (0:29:29) Al: early next week, so they’ll be probably out by now. By the time you’re listening. Not by now, (0:29:36) Al: Bev, not you, everyone else. That’s fine, we need some news for next episode as well. (0:29:47) Al: Speaking of updates, Sunhaven has two upcoming updates. We can’t wait to show you what’s coming in our two biggest updates planned for this year, they said. The 1.4 includes some new. (0:29:59) Al: And they have been posting about them on Twitter. (0:30:00) Bev: Mm-hmm, one of them looks like um what’s that one character from Breath of the Wild? (0:30:11) Al: Oh yeah, what’s the the thing? Yeah, I know. (0:30:15) Bev: Uh-huh, what I do like that’s my favorite I think um (0:30:21) Bev: race, race in Breath of the Wild so I’m I guess I’m here for it. (0:30:28) Bev: Oh, goodness, I like how the topped. (0:30:29) Al: the Zora, the Zora and prints, prints, prints something. (0:30:30) Bev: Yes, there we go. The top comment is this is my type, Godspeed. (0:30:39) Bev: Is it starts with an N or is it an A? (0:30:46) Al: Side on, there we go. (0:30:46) Bev: Sidon! (0:30:50) Bev: I do like Sidon. (0:30:50) Al: Googling a fish person’s name from a random game that’s not a game we cover on the podcast, excellent. (0:30:56) Al: Prince side on, yeah, you’re right, (0:30:58) Bev: It does! (0:31:00) Bev: I forget if I have something or not. I might be on my wishlist but (0:31:04) Bev: um… (0:31:06) Bev: I don’t know if this will bring me into the game necessarily but (0:31:08) Al: You don’t want to date fake prince item. (0:31:12) Bev: I mean I would love to date [laughing] (0:31:13) Al: Carish, the adventurous shark amare who has a heart of gold and a love for many different kinds of sushi. (0:31:21) Al: That’s weird. (0:31:22) Bev: Oh my goodness, another, this is gonna make you look to us in Wonderland so much. (0:31:22) Al: That’s weird. (0:31:23) Al: Why make your fish person eat fish? (0:31:30) Bev: So the character that’s based off of Ursula has two sidekicks that are the eels. (0:31:36) Bev: The eels whose favorite food is takoyaki. (0:31:42) Bev: [Crying] Uh huh. (0:31:52) Al: So I just checked. I do have Sunhaven. I have not played it. But I do have it. This is the problem with backing everything that shows up on Kickstarter, is that I never have the (0:31:52) Bev: Okay. (0:32:00) Bev: Indeed. (0:32:02) Bev: This is why I’ve tried to slow down my Kickstarter backing. (0:32:08) Bev: I was like a super backer for a couple years. (0:32:10) Bev: I was like I need to stop this. (0:32:10) Al: Yeah. I don’t think I’ve done many this year. I think I’ve only done one this year, so far. (0:32:18) Bev: Okay. (0:32:19) Al: And for some reason, that one was Sugardew Valley. No, Sugardew Island. (0:32:26) Bev: Well, there’s Everdream Valley and… (0:32:33) Al: And Stardew Valley. Speaking of Stardew Valley, Stardew 1.6 comes out in the past, when you’re (0:32:40) Bev: Wait, is it the 16th? Is it today? That work work hard? Okay, okay. I’m not ready. I’m gonna be on travel. I don’t know. If it’s residual stress, I guess. Well, good luck. (0:32:41) Al: the episode. The update will be out. (0:32:46) Al: No, it’s the 19th. It’s Tuesday. It’s Tuesday. Don’t worry. Don’t worry. We’ve still got a couple days. (0:32:54) Al: I’m not ready either. You’re not even doing the episode on it. Why are you stressed? (0:33:00) Al: I have four days to play this game before I have an opinion on it. (0:33:10) Al: Each day before the update, ConcernedApe has been posting one non-spoilery patch note. (0:33:16) Al: For example, “Fixed bug where it was faster to harvest left to right than right to left.” (0:33:24) Al: And he clarifies the update will make them both equally fast, not equally slow. (0:33:29) Al: “Extended the area of effect of downward facing melee attacks.” (0:33:34) Al: That’s very specific. (0:33:36) Al: reduced the amount of time you need to push against the… (0:33:40) Al: pet before they start shaking and then let you pass through them… (0:33:44) Al: down from 1.5 seconds to 0.75 seconds. (0:33:47) Bev: That’s a 50% decrease. (0:33:48) Al: I know, but it’s one and a half seconds. It’s not exactly long. (0:33:49) Bev: It’s needed. (0:33:51) Bev: It’s needed. (0:33:54) Al: Spouses now have a seven-day honeymoon period after marriage, (0:33:56) Al: which prevents them from laying in bed all day due to being upset. (0:34:02) Al: And jellies, pickles, wines and juices are now coloured based on the ingredient item. (0:34:08) Bev: I will say that’s a nice quality. Yes, because… (0:34:10) Al: And that feels like something that probably didn’t take him a lot of time to do. (0:34:14) Bev: No, no, probably not. (0:34:16) Al: It’s like, yep, we’re gonna change the colour of… (0:34:18) Al: I mean, probably the biggest thing was making all of the sprites, you know. (0:34:22) Bev: right mm-hmm mm-hmm I do like the little banners that he’s created for each of these little updates it’s very cute uh-huh uh-huh (0:34:24) Al: But anyway… (0:34:30) Al: They’re getting more and more intense, right? (0:34:32) Al: The first one, the first one was really just a screenshot of a text in his editor. (0:34:36) Al: editor and then by this one we’ve got like (0:34:40) Al: a gradient background, we’ve got the images of the actual differences, we’ve got some foliage poking in on the corners and some dramatic lines at the top and bottom of the- (0:34:51) Bev: That our fading is different from the previous one, so yeah, more and more elaborately. (0:34:51) Al: yeah. (0:34:52) Al: Well, yeah, I was going to say it’s the procrastination. (0:34:55) Bev: This is just like the descent into madness or procrastination. (0:35:01) Al: The game is done, he’s just writing up the release notes and boy, he does not want to I’ll be relating up the release notes. (0:35:07) Bev: Uh-huh. (0:35:10) Al: Amazing. (0:35:10) Bev: Uh-huh. (0:35:11) Bev: - So good. (0:35:12) Al: Anyway. (0:35:13) Bev: Everything about this game, (0:35:14) Bev: which is why you have Ever Dream Valley and Chigudu Island. (0:35:16) Al: Why? (0:35:18) Al: Speaking of Everdream Valley! (0:35:20) Al: The multiplayer update is out now. (0:35:21) Bev: Oh my goodness. (0:35:24) Al: That’s all I’m saying. I don’t… (0:35:26) Al: I don’t… (0:35:26) Bev: Even the font, the font, I can’t. (0:35:30) Al: Roots of Patcha! (0:35:32) Al: I’ve given us some information on there. (0:35:34) Al: Upcoming 1.2 and 1.3 updates. (0:35:40) Al: 1.2 update brings the Xbox release plus kids. (0:35:46) Al: Patcheons love their kids and so do we, (0:35:48) Al: so we wanted to make sure having them felt like a meaningful addition to the experience. (0:35:52) Al: As before, you’ll be able to have two children. (0:35:56) Al: All right, Chyna. (0:35:56) Bev: As before as before to what? (0:35:58) Al: But… (0:35:58) Al: I don’t know. (0:36:00) Al: But once you build a school… (0:36:00) Bev: Are they referring to something? (0:36:02) Al: But once you build a school, (0:36:04) Al: you can send your toddler to school and they’ll grow into a child. (0:36:06) Bev: Oh, they got a school! (0:36:10) Al: You’ll have a set of dialogues and schedules to interact with you and the clan. (0:36:14) Al: With your gentle guidance, they’ll start to have their own interests. (0:36:20) Bev: I think I see a little child play with a pet and that is rather cute, I will say. (0:36:24) Al: Speaking of pets, that is another thing they’re adding into this. (0:36:26) Bev: Oh, sorry. (0:36:29) Al: Animals have helped humanity throughout - don’t say sorry, it was perfect. (0:36:33) Al: Animals have helped humanity throughout time and soon our pets will as well. (0:36:36) Al: You’ll be able to assign them to gather things for you. (0:36:38) Al: A cave lion might bring back meat, while a bunny might bring back produce. (0:36:44) Al: I love the idea of like a lion just going out and just killing an animal for you and dragging the corpse to you. (0:36:50) Al: And then a bunny’s gone out and like grabbed some eggs. (0:36:56) Bev: And then you just have the child just watching this awful terrifying lion come back with this bloody morsel. (0:37:03) Bev: Yes, just so cute. (0:37:05) Bev: Such a good bonding experience. (0:37:07) Al: Dragging the corpse along the ground. (0:37:08) Bev: Uh-huh. (0:37:10) Bev: I love it. (0:37:11) Bev: I’m here for it. (0:37:13) Al: They’ve also added some more locations for your unions that you can choose between. (0:37:20) Al: With so many beautiful places near the land, (0:37:22) Al: you’ll be able to select a location that powerfully fits you and your new partner. (0:37:26) Bev: Oh, that’s nice. I like that. (0:37:28) Al: Plus a bunch of other stuff. (0:37:29) Al: They’ve updated the phishing UI they’ve done a new early watering system before you do the (0:37:40) Bev: I think I’m seeing a trend here where a lot of the Stardew spin-offs, if you want to call them that, are updating frantically in this time period and I wonder why. (0:37:56) Al: because they’re all going to be playing Stardew, so they don’t want to be, they want to have their updates out before that. They’re 1.3 update, obviously the information is much less in this, (0:38:01) Bev: Well, they want to cash in on the hype, but that’s one. (0:38:10) Al: there’s lots of things to come there, including some more romanceable characters, some non-romanceable characters, new biomes, a new cave system, tent sleeping, new festivals, animals, plants, (0:38:25) Al: a new line. (0:38:26) Al: fishing minigame hangout spots new cut scenes quests and minigame so I feel like we’re getting close to when I actually play this game (0:38:41) Bev: I have it and I think I picked it up to play for the Game of the Year episode I did not sit in on and then immediately put it down. So I will get back into it because it was one of the ones that I enjoyed playing for the very very short while that I was lying in. (0:39:00) Al: There we go, Bev, I put us down for the second time. (0:39:02) Bev: Oh beautiful. Good. Now I have now I have to go back into it. (0:39:10) Al: Spirity 1.6.5 update is out now. (0:39:16) Bev: Oh well, 1.6.5, okay. (0:39:16) Al: My word up, get better. (0:39:21) Al: Normally I would ignore updates like this, (0:39:22) Al: ‘cause it’s like, oh, that’s just bugs, right? (0:39:24) Al: No, it’s not. (0:39:25) Al: It adds ducks. (0:39:26) Al: Ducks are now in the game. (0:39:30) Al: You’ll now be able to have cute algae eating ducks in your bath house. (0:39:35) Al: That’s ducks that eat algae, not algae that eats ducks. (0:39:38) Bev: I want Alte eating ducks now that you say it. (0:39:44) Al: that would be a very different game. Honestly, it sounds like something out of Elden Ring. (0:39:46) Bev: It would be. (0:39:46) Bev: I mean, it is spirity like they could. (0:39:52) Bev: It does. It truly does. (0:39:54) Al: Like just this amorphous algae that creeps along the ground and over walls and then finds you in the dark. (0:40:00) Bev: mm-hmm I feel like ducks deserve a 1.7 update but this the fact that they’re going into three digits and means I think they’re gonna have a 2.0 and it’s gonna be big I guess (0:40:14) Al: No, it’s obviously not going to be. (0:40:16) Bev: then why go to point five I don’t get it (0:40:18) Al: I just, I don’t know, I don’t know, because the last update that they talked about was 1.5.8. (0:40:25) Bev: Oh, goodness. What? (0:40:26) Al: What happened to all the, what happened to 1.6.0, 1.6.1, 1.6.2, 1.6.3 and 1.6.4? (0:40:30) Bev: » Those are bugs. (0:40:33) Al: What happened to them and why? There’s no information about them whatsoever. Nothing. (0:40:36) Bev: » They were bugs, bugs. (0:40:43) Al: Not at all. This is a major update listed in Steam. It was a major update, why is it 1.6.5? (0:40:51) Al: The one before 1.5.8, by the way, 1.5.3. But then the one before that was 1.5.2. (0:40:58) Bev: explain the first okay interesting I want this naming mechanism explained (0:41:00) Al: Also, the first version of the game, 1.3 point something, I can’t even remember what it was. (0:41:14) Al: This version also adds a new vendor and new seasonal mechanics in the bath house. (0:41:20) Al: Not just bath, in the bath house. Just in a bath. (0:41:20) Bev: beautiful Ooh, ooh-hoo. (0:41:24) Al: Woo! (0:41:27) Al: Sugar Dew Island, right? Let’s get back into this game. (0:41:31) Bev: Yes. (0:41:32) Al: So, they have published a bunch of FAQs. (0:41:35) Al: I don’t know if you were able to see these FAQs, because is it backers only? (0:41:39) Al: It doesn’t say backers only, so it looks like you should be able to read it. (0:41:43) Al: So, there’s a number of… (0:41:44) Al: Q’s and A’s that I want to highlight. (0:41:50) Al: So, first of all, they said, “Is the launch schedule realistic? (0:41:55) Al: It seems a little ambitious for an expected release later this year, (0:41:58) Al: after just over a year of production.” (0:42:00) Al: And their answer is, “Yes, it is realistic.” (0:42:03) Al: Okay, great. Thank you. (0:42:05) Al: I’m now convinced. (0:42:07) Al: I mean, the long answer is not any better than that. (0:42:09) Al: It says, “Yes, it is realistic as we’ve already made good progress in development.” (0:42:14) Al: Okay, fine. (0:42:16) Al: They then say, “Depending on how many more stretch goals are reached, (0:42:18) Al: the plan/release date could still change.” (0:42:20) Al: Which I feel like is an interesting way of doing this. (0:42:24) Al: It’s like, “Hey, if more of you buy the game, it will take longer to release.” (0:42:30) Al: That doesn’t feel like what you want to say to people. (0:42:30) Bev: - Yeah. (0:42:33) Bev: No, ‘cause I would argue that, excuse me, (0:42:36) Bev: stretch goals are part of the launch schedule. (0:42:39) Bev: So I would almost do it the opposite way if like, if you don’t get as many stretch goals then launch it earlier, but. (0:42:45) Al: Either that or make them as like post 1.0 right like your your base goal should be a fully featured game that gives you everything that makes sense as a game and if you don’t get any of the stretch goals it still feels like a complete game. The stretch goals should then be updates released after that if you can’t get it in the original timeline. Exactly, exactly, exactly. It’s the same issue I have with carl island in there 1.0 like (0:42:56) Bev: Mm-hmm (0:43:00) Bev: Right (0:43:05) Bev: Mm-hmm like there’s they’re stretching you don’t have to have it right now [laughs] (0:43:15) Al: you got to decide like your game can’t feel incomplete stardew valley never felt incomplete it felt like a complete game with its 1.0 and everything else after that has felt like extra content that we’re excited for not oh yes now it actually feels like a game which is what i’m going to feel like with 1.1 in carl island (0:43:18) Bev: Mm-hmm (0:43:35) Bev: yeah I guess so maybe oh I still haven’t come back into it fully we need to do a competition and that will bring me into it (0:43:42) Al: we do we do we do the other one I want to highlight is so question what about romance answer the feature is not currently planned yay success we finally might get a game of romance except except literally yesterday they posted on the Twitter asking how important is romance in a game to you they’re almost We’re certainly going to add romance. (0:43:54) Bev: You’re fine. (0:44:12) Al: So, we will see what happens, but I’m not excited about it. (0:44:19) Al: I’m going to add romance. (0:44:20) Al: I think it’s going to be really bad because it’s going to be bad because it is not… (0:44:23) Al: So, the way that they are forming this game is not as a character-based, story-driven game, (0:44:30) Al: I don’t think, and therefore I don’t think that romance will work well. (0:44:32) Bev: Hmm (0:44:35) Bev: No (0:44:37) Al: So we will see what happens, but I’m not excited about it. (0:44:39) Bev: Mm-hmm. I like how your comment essentially with this this (0:44:44) Bev: Comment is the top one and I just liked it. So there you go. Now you have the most likes in this post [laughter] (0:44:53) Al: However, one thing I am excited about, how will the time work in the game and how will save work? (0:45:00) Al: Our game is turn-based. (0:45:02) Al: You have as much time as you want per day as there is no timer in the game. (0:45:06) Al: The only rule is that you can only open the store once a day. (0:45:09) Al: There are three sections of the day. (0:45:11) Al: When you start the day, it’s in the morning. (0:45:13) Al: When you open the store, it’s noon, and when you close the store, it’s in the evening. (0:45:17) Al: You can save your game manually in the house, but when you end the day, we also save automatically. (0:45:21) Al: So there’s two things here. (0:45:22) Al: the save. Let’s get the save. (0:45:24) Al: I know that these things don’t like to be, allow you to save whatever you want, so you can like, save, scam a bunch of stuff, fine, whatever. I like however that is giving you the option to save in the house, so you can at least you don’t have to do that thing of “oh well I need to finish the day” and then you get to the end of the day and like “oh I’ll just do a little bit more” and you end up in that non-sleeping cycle. (0:45:45) Al: So, fine, good enough. (0:45:49) Al: But this idea of not having (0:45:53) Al: a timer on your day and you can spend as much time in the day as you want. (0:45:58) Al: I am very intrigued by this and now I have gone from I’m not excited about this game (0:46:03) Bev: Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Dude, I feel like we talked about this last time. It was about Sugadu, (0:46:04) Al: to I will I need to play this game and see how this works. (0:46:13) Bev: right? It wasn’t the nukazan. Okay, I’m having like deja vu and I’m wondering like, (0:46:14) Al: Well, they only announced this information this week, so I don’t think we have. (0:46:21) Bev: what did we talk about? Okay, maybe that’s it. Okay, um, yes, I am very interested in a turn base because that I feel like feels even more cozy and that you don’t (0:46:21) Al: We did talk about it in the Slack. (0:46:33) Bev: have that that stress that’s associated with the time of like needing to run back to your house before you drop dead um well not drop dead but you know whatever um uh-huh truly um I appreciate the games where they don’t um they’ll like slap your wrist for for running out of time uh because it’s just no one no one enjoys that no one likes being in the middle (0:46:44) Al: I know what you mean. (0:46:46) Al: It may as well be dead. (0:47:03) Bev: of a task. And then like, all of a sudden realized like, oh, (0:47:06) Bev: it’s past like 1am. And now I’m, I can’t finish my task because I ran out of time. (0:47:12) Al: Yeah. So I’m going to assume that it still has an energy mechanic, because they have to have some way of you not just infinitely doing something, right? Well, except that Animal Crossing still isn’t infinite, because your timer is just your real-life timer. It has a timer for your day. (0:47:22) Bev: Mm-hmm (0:47:28) Bev: Mm-hmm or just do it infinitely like Animal Crossing you do that a polya for the most part you do that (0:47:42) Bev: Well, Al, like, then that- that every game has a real-life Tiber. (0:47:47) Al: OK, sure. I think it’s different, but that’s fine. We’ll move on from that. But I suspect it will have an energy mechanic and that will be the limiting factor on each day, which I think is fine. And I think it’s good because I guess the problem, and I hadn’t really thought about this until this was brought up, but I think it’s very… (0:47:56) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:48:01) Bev: Mm. (0:48:03) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:48:17) Al: very odd to have two limitations on you for one thing, which is essentially how long you’re going to spend in the day. And that problem of, “Oh, no, it’s the end of the day. I wasn’t paying attention to the time.” That’s because you’ve got two things to pay attention to. (0:48:22) Bev: Mm-hmm. (0:48:32) Bev: Mmhmm, mmhmm, mmhmm, mmhmm, mmhmm, mmhmm, mmhmm. (0:48:35) Al: You’re paying attention to the time and you’re also paying attention to your energy, your stamina. And it’s hard to keep a track of those things as well as play the game at the the same time, right? (0:48:45) Al: Thank you. (0:48:47) Al:

Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be considered disturbing, frightening and in some cases even offensive. Listener Discretion is therefore advised. Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I'm your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the things that go bump in the night, frighteningly imagined creatures, supernatural beings and even some unsolved mysteries but I promise all sorts of weirdness. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today's Dark enigma well, I got an interesting listener suggestion, complaint, meh suggestion – They wanted to know why I haven't done any Irish stories – well honestly, because I have yet to perfect an Irish Brogue that isn't truly embarrassing, so here you go! So, with that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say Lir that will be a single shot and every time I say children, that will be a double shot. Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so don… your best Irish Kilt and a thick fisherman's sweater or Celtic tunic as we jump into today's offering of The Traditional Irish Legend The Fate Of The Children of Lir – oh and the Brogue still isn't worthy, so I won't be embarrassing myself by using it, sorry. Now at the time when the Tuatha de Danaan chose a king for themselves after the battle of Tailltin, and Lir heard the kingship was given to Bodb Dearg, it did not please him, and he left the gathering without leave and with no word to any one; for he thought it was he himself had a right to be made king. But if he went away himself, Bodb was given the kingship none the less, for not one of the five begrudged it to him but only Lir. And it is what they determined, to follow after Lir, and to burn down his house, and to attack himself with spear and sword, on account of his not giving obedience to the king they had chosen. "We will not do that," said Bodb Dearg, "for that man would defend any place he is in; and besides that," he said, "I am none the less king over the Tuatha de Danaan, although he does not submit to me."
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our mini theme of the flexibility of text. We examine the Infocom era by playing a late title, Plundered Hearts. The itinerary for my Celtic Invasion of Westport, Ireland is now online. Find out what my Firefly song, “Blue Sun”, has to do with Monopoly and Walmart. Get an Atlanta Food Recommendation. Then go out to eat with your own Celtery. This is Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories #264. 0:20 - Kilted Kings “Blue Sun” from Flower of Scotland WELCOME TO SCI FI PUB SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. This is the audio edition of my newsletter as well as the liner notes for the songs I record. You can follow this show at PubSong.net or send an email to pubsong@celtfather to sign up and get the MP3s for my songs featured in this episode. 3:10 - WHAT'S NEW: A NEW SHOW NAME One of my weaknesses is sometimes I have to try something before I can see how effective it is. The past two episodes were called Atlanta Pub Songs & Stories because I wanted and still want to highlight things around Atlanta, where I currently live. The problem is I wasn't sure what to do. Yes. I have a food recommendation coming up. But when I put myself in the shoes of potential listeners, like you, I just don't see the Atlanta part as being useful for reaching an audience. More than likely, you're interested in Sci Fi, fantasy, Celtic music and culture, or pop culture because that is what I do. Atlanta is not as essential to the music story even though most of my shows are located in this city. And so, I'm pleased to introduce Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. 5:15 - UPCOMING SHOWS FEB 9: Drinking Songs Concert on Bandcamp @ 7 PM ET FEB 11: Pontoon Brewing, Sandy Springs, GA @ 12-3 PM JUN 3-10: Celtic Invasion Vacations, County Mayo, Ireland 6:25 - CELTIC INVASION OF WESTPORT, IRELAND This June, I'm bringing a small group of people to Westport, Ireland. I'd like you to join me. Westport is part of the Wild Atlantic Way. That's a spectacular, scenic route from Irishowen in County Donegal all the way down the west coast of Ireland to Kinsale in County Cork. It's broken up into 14 stages, two of which are in the area we are staying, Achill Island and Clew Bay, and Westport to Clifden. 5 Things You Should Do in County Mayo, Ireland Go to Matt Malloy's Pub in Westport. Visit Westport House and take a train around town to get to know the history behind the Irish of County Mayo Hike up Croagh Patrick, This pilgrimage area has a story that St. Patrick himself scaled this mountain and fasted atop it for 40 days way back in 441 AD. It's definitely a revered site in this area of the country, and can make for a great stop on any trip to the region. Take a boat out to Clare Island to visit O'Malley Castle, one of the castles owned by the Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley. Take pictures all along the Wild Atlantic Way. I completed the itinerary for the trip and already I think I scheduled way too much. There are so many fine castles, cliffs, and amazing things to see, not to mention the time I hope to spend in Matt Malloy's listening to music. It's gonna be an incredible trip. I still have space for just two more people. If you'd like to join me in Ireland, hear me perform live in your living room, you won't be sorry. It's gonna be spectacular. Check out the itinerary for the Celtic Invasion Vacations of Ireland 2023 and drop me an email to let me know that you want to go! 10:35 - Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser “Gypsy Rover” from How America Saved Irish Music 13:50 - DOWNLOAD MY FREE EP You can download all of my songs in this show. I taught Kenzie it. After just two games, I was kinda done. The game drags on just way too long. Unfortunately, Kenzie is not done with it. She loves it and makes us play as often as we will let her. So I finally figured out how to endure the game. It's a quick win or lose strategy. If you're lucky enough to buy all the property as soon as possible, then demolish and win. If you're not, do your best to lose and get out of the game as soon as possible. Kind of sad. But that's what a monopoly is. If you learned about early 20th century monopolies, it wasn't much better. In fact, the woman who created the game was trying to teach people the evils of monopolies. Yet, we haven't learned. The government allowed Live Nation to create a monopoly of concert venues. Ticket sales for Taylor Swift's summer tour busted their online system. Well, actually, it was already busted thanks to bootleggers. Monopolies are one of the reasons I finished “Blue Sun”. But the song actually goes back before that, all the way back to the writing of “Monahan's Mudder's Milk”. That's when I wrote the chorus. Blue Sun. Blue Sun Another corporation with their hand on the gun Blue Sun. Blue Sun. Free yourself to run from Blue Sun. Blue Sun is the corporation in the TV show Firefly with a seemingly nefarious background. You see their imagery on Jayne's shirt, on the docks of Persephone, and other places. The blue color makes me think of the Two by Two, Hands of Blue from the episode Ariel. I can't help but wonder if a connection is there. It feels to me like Blue Sun is a monopoly that largely is in control or at least has a big blue hand in their Alliance government. And because they have a monopoly, they can do what they want. They can also destroy what they want all in the name of profit for their investors. I did my best to come up with what a bully corporation would do. That's what the first two verses are all about. It's about subjugating the people they are supposed to “serve”. They terraformed the lands of many fine worlds Then bloodied our hands with our boys and our girls They offered us cans of food that curdled And piled on chains by the ton. You see their emblem emblazoned on crates On walls, on wombs, even on your dates You may fall victim to their seductive gaze So raise up your hands to shun Now we come to the final idea that motivated writing this song. My family is from a small town in East Texas. It was never a super vibrant town. As a kid, it looked like they stopped growing as a community in prolly the 40s or 50s. But they did have a downtown area. That downtown area disappeared when Walmart moved in. Walmart's strategy was to build a big store on the edge of town. It offered low, low prices, on everything. We were all thrilled. That's where I first experienced the store. I loved it. Before long, the downtown of our local community was closed down. You've prolly heard the term “Buy Local”. It took a while for me to understand that idea. The fact is that we need to support our local community if we want to see it thrive and grow. Much like “Monahan's”, this song turns into a Woody Guthrie style protest song against corporations. Their manacles we'll cast off our tired wrists. Their suits we'll pummel with our bloodied fists Cut through the red tape and expunge the vile cyst That cripples our will to run So raise up your voice and shout to the firm Let those who control know what it feels like to squirm Their products we won't buy, but oh they shall burn For this is their will undone I love the imagery in these verses. It is very down-to-earth. And fierce. Complete with burning their products in protest. I made two recordings of this song. The Kilted Kings version features Randy Wothke on percussion. The As Long As I'm Flyin' version has Lyrics and music Marc Gunn Marc Gunn: autoharp, vocals Daniel Briggs: bass, mandolin, octave mandolin, vocals LT Panzarella: dumbek So I wrote, this song, not just as a stance against corporations but also as a stance FOR small businesses, local organizations and companies and individuals and bands 24:25 - Marc Gunn “Blue Sun” from As Long As I'm Flyin' 26:50 - THANK YOU GUNN RUNNERS! The one that looked most promising was in Sandy Springs. So we drove 30 minutes over there only to find the place was very smoky. Something I'm not big on. Happily, we were close to Pontoon Brewing Company. We stopped and had a drink while we picked a place to have dinner. We were all tired from the day. One of the closest places that sounded interesting was a Thai food restaurant. We drove over to Sweet Chili Thai Cuisine. I love Thai but never have I loved it as much as I loved it here. There were four of us. We had four appetizers, three meals and two desserts. Every, single, dish, was, AMAZING! The coconut soup was so creamy and delicious. They recommended Curry Puffs and WOW! The Basil Rolls were so fresh. The Nom Sod was delicious. Drunken Noodles, Spicy Green Beans, and Chef's Catfish special. Omg! They apparently just opened six months ago. So now is the time to go. Because this food was incredible. Oh! And the price was very reasonable for Thai food. Go check out Sweet Chili Thai Cuisine. 31:26 - Marc Gunn “Botany Bay” from Going for Brogue 34:36 - ARE YOU CARRYING YOUR OWN CELTLERY? You heard that right—Celtlery. I'm looking for more eco-friendly merch that I can create and sell at shows. I finally packaged up one such item-Travel Celtlery. How many times do you go to a lower-end restaurant where they give you a small plastic bag filled with plastic cutlery and a napkin that smells like pepper. You know what I'm talking about. I find this so frustrating because no matter how many times I order out and I tell them no silverware is needed, they bring it. What do we do with that stuff. You open it up. The plastic bag is not easily recycled. The plasticware usually goes straight into the trash. One of the things I'm trying to teach myself to do is to bring my own cup and cutlery so I don't have to use more plastic than I have to. That's why I'm trying out selling Travel Celtlery. This is a small bag to hold bambooware that you can take with you so you too don't have to add to the plastic problem that is destroying our planet. Right now, I have a small handful of Celtlery Bags in my store. What do you think of the idea? Want your own? Shop for Celtlery now! Oh! Shortly after writing this, I found a downloadable guide from Beyond Plastics about how to reduce plastic use at restaurants. If you love this episode, then take a screenshot on your phone. Post it on social media. And tag @celtfather. If there is an episode of SVU featuring a worse version of Bad Amanda Rollins, the Munchie Boys have yet to come across it. Gambling Amanda gets in Dutch with an improbable art forgery/gambling outfit who use her massive debts to them to get her to be their evidence-disappearing cop on the take. Rollins do so much to warrant her immediate firing that it's shocking she made it another decade past this. More than that, for a solid half-hour, we're left to think she was forced to blow Declan while he's undercover in his first appearance. Dark, bad stuff is afoot, but don't worry, we also take plenty of detours into improbable names paired with nonsensical accents, Logue going full brogue, and how being an art history major from an Ivy makes you immune from the heat.Sources:Branford Marsalis Gets the Blues For "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" - The Credits - Motion Picture dot OrgMusic:Divorcio Suave - "Munchy Business"Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Pedro H, Amy Z, Nikki B, Louise M, Whitney C, D Reduble, Tony B, Zak B, Barry W, Karen D, Madelin K, Sara L, Miriam J, Drew D, Meghan M, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Isabel P, Christine L, and Amy A - y'all are the best! In this episode we're look into the tangled origins of the word brogue. I decided to make this a joint Adventures in Etymology / Celtic Pathways episode rather doing two separate ones. I hope you don’t mind. The word brogue in English refers to a type of shoe, or a strong accent, particularly a strong […]

A Celtic Halloween ghost story. Can Death stop Johnny from grabbing a drink after a hard day at work? It's Pub Songs & Stories #259. WELCOME TO PUB SONGS & STORIES 0:10 - “Black Velvet Band lyrics” by Marc Gunn from The Bridge I am Marc Gunn. This is the audio liner notes for the songs I play. The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. If you enjoy this podcast and my music, please join the Club. You'll get 2-3 podcasts per month. You'll be able to download a song featured in this show, get sheet music, and access to Coffee with The Celtfather video concerts. That is all for as little as $5 per month. Thanks to my newest Gunn Runners on Patreon: Lisa and Troy 4:02 - WHAT'S NEW? Music? You may ask. But where's the story? I'm trying another change to the podcast. So I'm gonna share a few tracks in this episode, along with a story about my original song “I'll Drink from Dusk Til Dawn”, a ghost story, no less, just in time for Halloween. I'm revving for the end of the year. I launched the Celtic Christmas Podcast last week. And yes, I know we haven't gotten through Halloween yet. But when you're a DJ, you have to plan way early. Speaking of Halloween, if you haven't listened to “Lament for a Halloween Rabbit”, go check it out. I released that episode last year. You can hear my Bugs Bunny Halloween song in that episode. And make sure you pick up my Celtic Halloween EP. It's one of the bonuses you get when you are a member of my Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. 6:36 - “High Jeannie High” by Marc Gunn from Happy Songs of Death 8:41 - RECYCLING TIP I learned something interesting about recycling recently. I wanted to share. I think most of us know we should recycle. But there are a LOT of hiccups in learning how. In Birmingham, AL, we could only recycle glass by taking it to a glass recycle dumpster. But in Atlanta, we have a lot more options. So I'm gonna share two quick and easy tips. First, don't put plastic bags into the recycle bin. Plastic bags are too thin and they will tangle up in the machinery. That means, they have to shut down the equipment to get the plastic bag out. You can take all types of thin plastic to the recycle bins at grocery stores. It says plastic bags. And we think about grocery bags. But it includes all thin plastic. Second, it also includes trash bags. Those should not be dumped into the recycle bin. I used to bag all of my recycle material into a plastic trash bag and dumb that into the recycle bin. Turns out when you do that, the collectors frequently throw those bags into the regular trash because the trash bag also will get caught in the machinery. So instead, dump the recycle loosely into your blue bins. It seems weird. But it's more likely to get recycled. I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me. 10:51 - UPCOMING SHOWS NOV 4-6: Conjuration, Atlanta, GA NOV 19: Three Taverns Brewery, Decatur, GA @ 12:00-1:30 PM NOV 19: Ironshield Brewing, Lawrenceville, GA @ 7:00-10:00 PM 11:56 - “La La La Geek” by Marc Gunn from Sci Fi Drinking Songs 14:08 - STORY OF I'LL DRINK FROM DUSK TIL DAWN I wrote “I'll Drink From Dusk Til Dawn” around 2001, I think. I don't exactly remember when. But I do remember quite a bit about this Irish ghost story. The original title of the song was “Johnny at the Door”. I first recorded it with the Brobdingnagian Bards for our album Songs of Ireland. It was one of the few original songs. [insert snippet of bards version] This is one of those songs I was super proud of. I wanted to write a traditional-style ghost story and I succeeded tremendously. I had so many people ask us back then where I “found” the song because they thought it was a traditional Irish song. That was a big part of my goal in writing it. I wanted a song that was indistinguishable from traditional Irish songs. So on that front I succeeded. I also succeeded because of the name–”Johnny at the Door”. It's a good ghost story name. It evoked wonderful imagery. It's the story of a man who goes to work just longing for the end of the day and a good pint of beer with his friends. He dies on the journey. And his ghost finishes his quest to have a good pint of beer. But yes, I changed the name. That was because of MP3.com. We were doing quite well on MP3.com. I was learning a lot about naming things in search during that time. It was the start of my study of SEO (search engine optimization) which was super important in the aughts. But this was less SEO and more naming. If you know the song, “Johnny at the Door” sounds cool and kind of creepy. But it doesn't really get much attention until you hear that chorus. You see, this was one of my more successful attempts to write a drinking song. But again “Johnny at the Door” doesn't really say anything about it being a drinking song. Not until you hear it. I was convinced that if I renamed the song, that it would be more popular on MP3.com. And I was right. I changed the name and the song shot up on the Celtic music charts. It wasn't super stellar. But it was good enough that when I decided to re-record it in 2009 for my CD, Happy Songs of Death, that I should use the new name instead of the one that Bards had used on Songs of Ireland. This recording was produced by Ari Koinuma. He was the Japanese American producer I hired to also produce Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. Aside from the autoharp, he played all of the instruments on the album. I think he sang on track as well. But most of the background vocals were me singing in different voices, something I was learning to do on Going for Brogue. Ari told me later that this was his favorite song on the album. He had fun producing it and building the intensity. 19:19 - “I'll Drink From Dusk Til Dawn” by Marc Gunn from Happy Songs of Death You can download this song as an MP3 when you join my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Greetings Gunn Runner Is Black Friday an ethical holiday? Overcoming fear is the theme of a new song inspired by the hobbit. Top 10 songs on Spotify. Now, we also have Cyber Monday. These are two days when people open up their wallets and many businesses offer HUGE discounts. I confess I am very torn by those holidays. On the one hand, I have my own business. CD sales are still one of the big ways I make money. My Patreon needs to be twice what it is for me to remove my dependence on CD and merch sales. On the other hand is consumerism. We create so much waste. I'm not even gonna go into what that waste does to our environment and its effect on climate change. One of the things I love about the new digital revolution is I can potentially create music and make a living without adding to the waste. One day I hope to sell out all my CDs. Then I will just release them on a limited basis, for those who truly love the media. My storage shelves will be mostly empty. The Christmas holiday doesn't help. It's all about spending. It bothered me a lot more back in the 90s when I first heard about Buy Nothing Day. That day was created in response to the consumerism. It's on the very same day as Black Friday. "Don't buy" is the message. Back around 2001, it became possible to accept credit cards at gigs. But at the time, I was $15K in debt. All because of MY irresponsible use of credit cards. It got me questioning. Should I accept credit card payments...and potentially have you, my customer, go into debt because of my products? Eventually, I decided you should be responsible for yourself. But at the same time is that cop out? This is one of those ethical dilemmas. I was talking recently with people about ethics in healthcare. The question was raised: should a parent have full control of their child's healthcare? Do they know what's best for their child? The quick answer is yes. I know what's best for my daughters. But that comes from my privileged, fairly healthy family background. A parent who is strung out on drugs, sick, or poor or in abusive relationship. They might not be healthy enough to do what is best for their child. There are so many nuances. There isn't one right answer. It's each different for each person. My biggest complaint with corporations is that in order to be successful, they need to do what will make the most-profit for their business. That sounds reasonable. They should be allowed to make money freely, without government interference. That is until you realize that they can dump sewage into our water, poison our air, and destroy our environment. They can murder people and not be culpable. Because they are a business. The actions of the business will not financially impact the owners of that business. Reminds of McDonalds: "Would you like to Supersize that?" That phrase made them boatloads of money. The cost was the increased obesity of their customers. It took regulations to stop them from using that simple sales phrase. Sure it made them more money. But was it ethical? We are all manipulated by businesses trying to make a buck. That's why Black Friday changed from businesses saying, "Huh. We get a lot more sales on the day after Thanksgiving" to "Let's capitalize on that and start a holiday!" I decided not to do a Black Friday sale this year. I thought about it. And I plan to put together a sale on my website soon. I'm not abandoning sales altogether. But I'm torn. If nothing else, I think it's important to think about what's right. The ethics of sales. Just because you think it's fine. Doesn't mean it's ethically right. It could be. But think about it. I'm starting to plan shows a month ahead. Course, that said, I'm also struggling to collect the stories. But maybe that'll become easier as the show grows and I spread the signal further. I also realized it would be beneficial for bands if they did more than one story. So what the heck. Until I get a couple months ahead, I'm gonna ask for more than one IF they have a good story to tell. Band O'Brothers had a good story for their song "Whiskey Spider". I also shared another story from Empty Hats that I recorded back in the spring. I rounded out September with a live podcast recording from Dragon Con. I meant to record a bunch of stories at Dragon Con and Gen Con. But I was just too busy and/or too wiped . That sucks. But that's the way of it. I did lay some groundwork to collect some stories though. So we shall see. One of the best things about this format is that if someone really loves a song, eventually I can just say, go check out the episode about that song in Pub Songs & Stories. So far, so good. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast had a full four episodes. I'm still not caught up. But as of this recording, I'm almost done with next week's show. So it's a start. The In The 'Verse podcast launches the season 2 announcement episode on October 2. You'll want to listen if you want to find out what are plans are for the next season. On Patreon, I released my thoughts on Gen Con 2021 as well as Dragon Con. I also released a new song called "You Are My Thor". It's a rough cut. But there might be more such things in the future. I also released two more MP3s. 17:44 - VIDEOS Coffee with The Celtfather had a few hiccup moments this month. I played a replay of one of my hobbit shows because I didn't have much of a voice after Dragon Con. Then the following week, I skipped it, because I was at Gen Con. I planned all of my Coffee shows for October. I'm gonna keep planning the themes a month in advance. I was a bit concerned about the attendance of Hobbit Drinking Songs show this month. But all went well. I'm excited about the Firefly Drinking Songs show for October. 18:35 - IN THE STUDIO In every episode of Pub Songs & Stories, I record, talk about and play at least one song. All of the songs from the first three months of the year were released on a CD called Virtual Public House. The MP3s are still up on my Bandcamp if you want to just buy that album. But that's the last of those digital albums I'm gonna release. In the future, you'll need to subscribe to Patreon. All of those MP3s will be drip released to my Gunn Runners Club. So if you want some more unique recordings, join the Gunn Runners Club today. Selcouth is still in the works. I thought we were all done, but right as we were getting ready to master the tracks, Mitchell and I noticed a few problems. So we did some MORE edits. Now we're down to one final song, "Kilty Pleasure". This is the one track that I recorded with autoharp and vocals at the same time. But the compression on the vocals made the autoharp sound weird. So I finally decided to re-record my vocals. That should make it easier to finish the mix. In the meantime, everything else is done. I have some songbooks, shirts, pins, USBs, stickers. They're all here. I just need the music finished so I can order CDs. Brobdingnagian Bards released a new EP at Dragon Con. It's called Another Faire to Remember. It was well-received at the conventions. We decided to postpone the Kickstarter. We're gonna aim for 2023 release for that album. That gives us PLENTY of time to record all of the songs for the CD and maybe even write a couple songs. 21:12 - MERCH I pulled Virtual Public House from my Bandcamp store. It's still available for private streaming so if you bought the album and have any problem playing it, please let me know. Remember, subscribe to my mailing list, you get a discount code to save 15%. Sign up to the mailing list at CelticInvasion.com if you want to join the NEXT invasion. 22:45 - WEBSITES I updated YearOfTheKilt.com. That's a URL that goes with my Kilted For Her Pleasure bumper stickers. It's now designed just to get people to buy a sticker. My FireflyDrinkingSongs.com website now points straight to the In the 'Verse podcast. I wanted a simpler way to just share a URL for the podcast. So I used an existing URL I bought. I wasn't doing much with it anyway. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 9, 2021 is: brogue BROHG noun A brogue is a low shoe, usually made of leather, with perforations and a wing tip. // Even though his brogues are scuffed and old, Dad prefers them to his new loafers. See the entry > Examples: "I've recently returned from my annual trip to the UK and, as usual on returning, my accent (apparently) is a little more clipped than when I left, and I'm wearing brogues and—most startling of all—socks, despite the unseasonable Aussie heat." — Neale Whitaker, The Advertiser (Australia), 20 Jan. 2019 Did you know? Did you expect brogue to be defined as "an Irish accent"? You're probably not alone; however, brogue has two homographs (words that are spelled—and, in this case, pronounced—the same but have different origins or parts of speech). Today we're featuring brogue, the shoe, which comes from the Irish word bróg and probably derives from an Old Norse term meaning "leg covering." Brogue, the accent, comes from a different Irish word, barróg, which means "accent" or "speech impediment."
Could a Firefly Drinking Songs TV show be on its way? What's different with Coffee with The Celtfather. How close am I to completing my next CD? CELTFATHER MONTHLY UPDATES 8:02 - PODCASTS I released two episodes of Pub Songs & Stories this month. The first highlighted songs about selkies with stories from Elizabeth Sutherland and me. But also there was a story by Matt & Shannon Heaton about a tune they wrote. It was a good show. But afterward, I was lamenting to my engineer, Mitchell, that I can't seem to put out more episodes. He suggested shorter ones. So instead of compiling the next big one in September, we put out a short one featuring Tuatha Dea and their story about "Black Douglas", the original Braveheart. I'm gonna try out the new format for the next month or so. So far, I'm liking it. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast had a full four episodes. I keep hoping to get ahead on that show. Maybe this week, since I'm only doing four episodes a month, it might give me a week to get ahead... or it might not because of Dragon Con. On Patreon, I released a bonus episode about releasing music on vinyl. 9:52 - VIDEOS My Coffee with The Celtfather shows are going well. Season 9 started on Thursday, August 5. I'm still not overflowing with viewers. But there's a solid number watching. I ran a Kickstarter for two weeks. I raised enough money to pay for Restream.io. So now I can skip asking for tips and just focus on performing all season. One of the last shows was pre-recorded in some local woods. It was nice to get out. The next Celtfather Live is on Thursday, September 23 at 8 pm ET. This will be a Hobbit Drinking Songs show. Tickets will go on sale in September. I shared of a waterfall in North Georgia that my family saw back in May. And I made a new video for my music's Patreon page. 13:26 - IN THE STUDIO August was my big studio month. I spent the first couple days of August in the studio putting some final touches on Selcouth and recording tracks for a Brobdingnagian Bards EP that we will release at Dragon Con. Selcouth has 13 tracks and at the time of recording this, Mitchell and I are still cleaning up one more final song that we realized had sonic problems. I'm hoping we'll finish it up this weekend. I'm trying to complete the album by the end of the month. In the meantime, I finished the Selcouth booklet with lyrics and stories behind the songs. I ordered shirts for the Kickstarter. Then I just need to mail everything to all of my supporters. I sat down and recorded more music for the Brobdingnagian Bards EP. The album is called Another Faire to Remember. This sort of a preview/concept that will be released as a full-length album next year. We are over halfway done with the album. So we're gonna launch a Kickstarter for it probably in October. 17:13 - MERCH I'm getting ready to pull Virtual Public House from my store along with the As Long As I'm Flyin' vinyl album. If you want to own either, order it now. Coffee with The Celtfather coffee mugs are back in the store as are the pint glasses. Remember, subscribe to my mailing list, you get a discount code to save 15%. 18:30 - CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS The Celtic Invasion of Scotland officially opened this month. It also closed this month. Greetings Gunn Runner A new single with the Brobdingnagian Bards and a Bards EP. Last chance to get my Firefly CD on vinyl. A short, new Kickstarter coming? Coffee with The Celtfather returns for its 9th season. Do you really have to put on a show to draw a crowd? It's all on my monthly update, Celtfather Music & Travel, show #283. 1:04 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR JULY AUG 13: Tucker Brewing Company, Tucker, GA @ 6:30 - 9:30 PM AUG 19: Celtfather Live @ 8 PM ET. Tickets $6. AUG 26: The Lost Druid, Avondale Estates, AL @ 6 PM - 8:30 PM ET THURS: Coffee with The Celtfather, YouTube (Season 9 returns on Aug 5, 2021) @ 12:00 PM EST 1:58 - RANT: BUSKING SHOWMANSHIP I heard this quote from Elvis Presley years ago where he said, "You gotta put on a show to draw a crowd." CELTFATHER MONTHLY UPDATES 12:31 - PODCASTS Only one episode of Pub Songs & Stories this month. It highlighted "By Amazing Grace", my latest single. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast had a full four episodes, including a Women of Summer episode. Though I was pretty pleased with the Life Is Too Short episode as well. Amelia Hogan is one of my new favorite Celtic musicians on the podcast. The Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast came out later than usual. Andrew and I talked about "Songs That Get Stuck in Your Head". We talk getting comfortable on stage and chipmunk style Bog Off. Celtfather Music & Travel had a bonus episode where I talked about sound reinforcement at busking gigs. And Patreon was extra busy this month. In addition the free MP3s, I talked about a big happy success in July. I chatted about MP3s, CDs and streaming music, and I shared an unreleased podcast from Sherwood Forest Faire. 14:41 - VIDEOS At the beginning of the month I had one of those epic parenting successes. I was practicing music more with my kids. So my wife recorded a video of Kenzie singing "I'll Tell My Ma" while Inara danced and I played autoharp. It was amazing. One of those things I dreamed of, but never imagined would happen. The big news is the return of Coffee with The Celtfather. Season 9 starts on Thursday, August 5. I'm debating running a Kickstarter campaign to pay for Restream.io so that I can broadcast over multiple platforms. I feel like raising $120 is easy enough. AND since I don't earn much by way of tips, it would better fund the show, and show its profitability outside of Patreon. I haven't made a commitment yet, but it I'm seriously considering it. The next Celtfather Live is on Thursday, August 19 at 8 pm ET. 16:38 - IN THE STUDIO "By Amazing Grace", was released as a single on July 29. "Peggy Gordon" was released as a single on July 2. "Bright Side of Everything" is the next single. It's scheduled to come out on August 26. That one features the background music and vocals of Celtic rock band Screeched Inn, out of Canada. I have plenty of songs completed to finish up Selcouth. But there's one more I want to add. It's the "Reavers Drinking Song". I haven't recorded it at all, as of present. That's at the top of my recording schedule when the girls start back for school in August. I did record three songs for Another Faire to Remember. This is an EP that the Brobdingnagian Bards hope to release for Dragon Con. I still need to record at least one more song to make it happen. 18:58 - MERCH Virtual Public House is still on sale. I'm gonna pull it at the end of August. The As Long As I'm Flyin' vinyl album will no longer be available past September. So if you want either of those, you should order soon. Incidentally, sales for Virtual Public House have not been great. So I'm happy to say there will not be further editions released like this. I say happy because years ago, the Brobdingnagian Bards released Christmas in Brobdingnag, Vol. 1, with the intent that there would be future volumes. And there never were. I thought about naming Virtual Public House in a similar fashion. Now I don't have to. Instead of releasing Virtual Public House like I have, I'm just gonna continue to release the MP3s via Patreon. And then I might use the CD as a bonus item for Kickstarters. Meantime, you can download a free MP3 every month from this CD when you sign up to my mailing list. Merch sales at gigs this month were interesting. At Jordan Con, I didn't sell nearly as well as I hoped. But I did upgrade my merch table with a greater emphasis on my Celtic Heartstring necklaces. I love the look. Then I did a couple farmer's market gigs. That got me thinking about busking for Gen Con. So I updated my busking setup. It also sent me on a YouTube busking research binge. I watched a LOT of videos on busking. But few focus on merch. That is something I still need to work on. But I feel like my efforts will pay off... just not yet. Meantime, subscribe to my mailing list, you get a discount code to save 15%. 21:44 - CELTIC TRAVEL Nothing new to update about the Celtic Invasion of Scotland. However, sometime in August or possibly September, I hope to open up the sign ups for newbies. Details are coming. This week we dig into some of the recent developments and exciting new game announcements from E3, and we dig into a few other fun topics like: - Why every racing game fan should be playing Forza Horizon 4 (if you already haven't) - Daniel doesn't know what the hell is happening in Outer Wilds - Descending into why you should play Descenders - Finding the Portal 2 ending, or not? - Streets of Rogue, and it's UK counterpart, Streets of Brogue - Josh is back on that Breath of the Wild train

I listened to it while I was driving to Magic City Con last week. Curse him! It was really good. He's such a good storyteller. I find it frustrating that I'm not better because I would really like to do a show like that. I just don't feel it would be as good. Ah well... Summer break for the kids is making it difficult to plan ahead with podcasts. Pub Songs & Stories is coming out slower than I'd like. In June, I released... The Harpers #232: Was the harp banned by Queen Elizabeth? Hear the origins of the song Soul of a Harper by Rie Sheridan Rose. Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Plus, was it horrible, the night that Paddy Murphy died? Next time, there are a couple stories by Carl Asch of Empty Hats and Adrian of Tartanic. So far the Virtual Public House CD is not selling well. I'm not sure if that's an issue of promotion (or lack thereof) or the type of CD. So if you want to own a limited-edition CD, get it now. The album will be available for just a few more months. But it won't last the year. I had some good episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast in June. I'm particularly excited about the release of The Gothard Sisters' new CD, Dragonfly. I feature several tracks and will continue to. The Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast and Celtfather Music & Travel were on hiatus. I did release a couple Stories from the Road podcasts on Patreon though. I'm also starting to think about the next In the 'Verse podcast. I need to get back to songwriting. That podcast will help. 9:34 - VIDEOS Coffee with The Celtfather ended well. Those season finales seem to do pretty well. I started planning the themes for season 9 which will start on Thursday, August 5. I'm seriously considering signing back up to ReStream, which will once again allow me to broadcast on multiple platforms. Though, I will still stick primarily with YouTube. Maybe I'll just do one month. The re-launch of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast YouTube channel is posing problematic. YouTube stopped allowing me to edit shows on their website. So I used a secondary website. And that's just too much work for someone who has not enough time. So I might discontinue that. My Celtfather Live concert this month had a fairly light attendance. But it was a great group of Gunn Runners. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to know there are so many people who support my music. The next Celtfather Live is a FREE SHOW. It's scheduled for Thursday, July 15 at 8 pm ET. 11:17 - IN THE STUDIO I finally finished up "By Amazing Grace", "Bright Side of Everything", "Favor of a Dance", "Kilty Pleasure", and "Breathing". So we much closer to finishing up Selcouth. I'm thinking of having a private listening party for Gunn Runners to help me decide which are the best tracks on the album. I'm also gonna do that with my family. ALEP is postponed once again. So looks like Sam Gillogly and I have more time to finish our Dancing With Hobbits album. We still have quite a few tracks to release. "Name On My Soul" by Kilted Kings was released as a single this month. Listens have not been great. But oh well... The full album is out on June 25 under the title Flower of Scotland. 13:14 - MERCH Virtual Public House is still on sale. I haven't picked a date for it to be pulled. But I will give you at least a month's heads up. You can download a free MP3 every month from this CD when you sign up to my mailing list. I'm brainstorming more merch to sell at conventions in the next couple months. I'll let you know how that goes. I re-released several Firefly related merch items in preparation for the next Celtfather Live show. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. We're going to Scotland in 2022. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ 13:40 - Was the harp banned by Queen Elizabeth? That's the story that Rie Sheridan Rose heard. It led to the creation of a great song first recorded by my old band, the Brobdingnagian Bards. It also became the album title for my first official solo CD. Rie Sheridan Rose is a published author and poet. Little did I know when she gave me the lyrics to this song that I would be singing it twenty years later and have collaborated with her on many songs since. You can hear more of her songs and about our collaborations on show #210 of this show. 16:34 - History on Rie's Story I did a search to find out more about this period in history, to sort of corroborate Rie's story. I found several websites that said, yes indeed, it did happen. Here's some info from HipHarp.com: “The Irish harpers began to be suppressed after the Anglo-Norman invasion in the 12th century, which broke down the old cultural systems. The kings, who always had their own personal harpers, who were of very high standing, were replaced with English nobles. The Irish harpers began an existence of wandering from court to court. The English accused them of being spies. Queen Elizabeth decreed in 1603 that all Irish harp players should be hung and their harps burned. Interestingly, the British loved Irish harp music and usually employed harp players of their own. Queen Elizabeth had one. I guess he was immune. Cromwell was even more radical than Elizabeth and pretty much finished them off. Of course the harp tradition didn't die out all at once. Turlough O'Carolan, the most famous of the Irish harpers we have on record lived from 1670-1738. But 1792 was the last harp meeting in Belfast and by the beginning of the 19th century harp playing had pretty much died out. In Scotland the harp players were able to hide out in the Highlands, but the Battle of Culloden (1745?) pretty much finished off Scottish Highland culture and with it the harp players.” 19:32 - “Soul of a Harper” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 23:01 - Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Autoharpers like myself often liken ourselves to actual harpers. The great Irish harper, Turlough O'Carolan, is a favorite of us, but now it's time to highlight an actual harper and songwriter. Sharon Powers is a Celtic harpist in Birmingham, AL. She has played professionally since 2016. Her musical stylings lend both touches of elegance and whimsy that delight the ears of all who listen. She is also the mother of a baby named Arthur as she'll tell you about it in her story. 26:12 - “Arthur's Lullaby” by Sharon Powers from Single -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. New stories in the virtual public house. Limited-edition CDs. I'm a Rover, Seldom Sober video. Who recorded on what Selcouth song. And a new hobbit single. It's all on my monthly update, Celtfather Music & Travel, show #279. 0:17 - PODCASTS I've made so many changes to the Pub Songs Podcast over the years. I'm always wondering what do I want it to be? I think I finally have a format I'm excited about. The new intro goes like this: "Welcome to the Pub Songs & Stories, the Virtual Public House where you hear the stories and inspiration behind the music." The new format solves several issues I've had. First, it gives me a way to share my music in a fun capacity, performing "live" for my listeners, in much the same way Bing Crosby would've done on the Kraft Music Hall back in the day. I can sing new recordings of songs. I can share my stories about songs too. These can be either what the song is about or just a story related to the song I'm singing in the show. This is by far the toughest thing about producing the show, coming up with engaging stories. The new format also allows me to share stories and help other musicians. I plan to feature two stories from two different artists in each episode, plus one of their songs from each. If I can get an acoustic original performance, all the better. But right now, I'm just sharing studio recordings. My goal is to help promote them in a more personal setting, again, through stories. But even better, I realized that most musicians don't have my skill with podcasting. I see this new feature as a way for musicians to sort of have their own podcast. Of course that also means I can promote to their fans as well. So it's a win-win as far as I can see... IF I can keep up with the stories. You may also note that I'm not limiting this to Celtic musicians. Instead it's gonna be around my niche Celtic AND Geek music. The new description zooms in on musicians in general. If there's a story to be told, I might consider it. Oh! There's one more thing I am launching--limited-edition CDs. I asked Mitchell to start mixing down all of my songs in Pub Songs & Stories. Every three months or so, we will release a CD featuring the best of all of those songs. I'm also considering a possible USB which might include outtakes or song duplicates PLUS all of the podcast episodes. Again, it's limited edition. So the CD won't be available for long. 3-6 months. I though this might be another nice to fund the podcast. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast had some killer St Patrick's Day shows this year. Episode #500 was over four hours long. I LOVED hearing all of the congrats that were sent in by artists. It was a big pick me up. The March episode of Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast featured music. No big news there. Hopefully, Andrew and I can stay on top of upcoming shows. 4:53 - VIDEOS I think YouTube algorithms are finally understanding my channel. I'm not seeing greater subscribers yet. But the channel is mostly live shows (Coffee with The Celtfather) and I'm getting a decent number of folks watching those. I posted a couple new video singles recently. One was recorded in 2018 for the Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Skye. It's my journey from Glasgow to Inverness by train. The music is for "I'm A Rover, Seldom Sober". I have more video singles that are coming. I also created several new Canvases for Spotify. I'm still thinking about what videos to use for which song. Slowly getting those uploaded. The next Celtfather Live concert is scheduled for Thursday, April 15. This one is "For Mother Earth". I'm not sure what songs to include on that outside of "Heart of Fangorn". But whatever. If you have any suggestions, let me know. Tickets are different this time. All you have to do is spend $8 in my Mage Records store and you will get access to the show. And of course it's free to all Heroic Gunn Runners. 7:16 - IN THE STUDIO I'm still getting tracks back from musicians for Selcouth are done. No big update just yet. But I have most of the tracks from Screeched Inn done for "Bright Side of Everything". I'm waiting on some background vocals. Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer sent their tracks for "Favor of a Dance". They sound amazing. I have an update I'm waiting on from Andrew McKee, The Irish Bard, for "By Amazing Grace". The Muckers recorded their parts for "Kilty Pleasure" but I'm still waiting for the tracks. Nathan Deese sent his recordings for "Breathing". And it's perfect! Sam Gillogly and I released a new single on March 18 called "Proudfoot Shuffle". It's already getting a lot of streams on Spotify. I also started rewriting "Happy Birthday From Ireland". I never play that song because it's rather vain based. It was a birthday song for me. So now I'm editing the lyrics to make more about all of the children of Irish immigrants who are discovering their heritage. 9:08 - MERCH Of course, I already mentioned the Pub Songs & Stories CD that'll come out probably next month. I'm planning some package deals very soon. I don't remember which package deal is first. I think it's a comedy package... Keep any eye on the store and my mailing list for details. Greetings Gunn Runner How can you celebrate St Patrick's Day in 2021 with podcasts, videos, blogs and perhaps even live concerts. Enjoy St Patrick's Day stories. A new Dancing with Hobbits single. Learn about the Brobdingnagian Bards' next single. Save on a St Patrick's Day CD special. And get ready for my birthday. It's all on my monthly update, Celtfather Music & Travel, show #275. 0:26 - PODCASTS I am on fire with podcasting. I finally have systems that allow me to complete episodes and plan future ones in a timely fashion. So I'm ahead on all of my podcasts. I have nearly completed all the March episodes of the Pub Songs Podcast. I also have a new primary feature for that shows. I'm sharing stories from musicians. I love it because it's something solid. It gets other musicians involved. And again it's evergreen. The first March episode features two stories. One is from na Skylark. The second is from Stout Pounders. The St Patrick's Day show is most like a St Patrick's Day concert. I'm singing a bunch of songs that you requested in that episode. If you'd like to help out with future shows, there's One thing that would be amazing. Make a song request. You can suggest either a song I know or one I don't. Maybe I'll learn it. I'd like to learn some new songs for the podcast. To keep it interesting. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast has several St Patrick's Day episodes. My 17 for St Patrick's Day show comes out on March 4. All of the songs in that episode will be available for free download three days before St Patrick's Day. Then my BIG St Pat's show is also the 500th episode of the podcast. It was supposed to JUST be a 3-hour special. But when I remembered that my graphic artist, Miranda Nelson, had asked musicians to submit audio feedback. It became quite a bit longer. In fact, it's still being edited as I record this. Because there were over 60 songs in that show. That should be nearly 5 hours long... in one podcast. Yeah. I think this will officially be my longest podcast episode yet. Thankfully, I have Mitchell editing it. [Sorry Mitchell.] And I have a plan for recording and releasing it. Pro tip for anyone creating podcasts... or anything. Create a system to complete your projects. It helps! Finally, I created a system for releasing Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast episodes on a more regular basis. Andrew's been swamped. But I got him to record a February show. And I'm recording a simple music show for March. After that, I hope to stay on top of monthly episodes. The show will come out in the middle of each month. 4:04 - VIDEOS I started creating Canvases for Spotify. Basically, artists can share a 3-8 second video that plays on loop when you listen to a song on Spotify. I'd love to add that to as many of my songs as I can. I just need to figure out what kind of videos to add to each song. I haven't figured out WHAT to add yet. But there are a few that now have them. I just realized last week that Coffee with The Celtfather is doing exceptionally well. There are about 20 people watching the show every week. That's much higher than the 5-10 that used to. Facebook was really hit and miss and unreliable. So this is fantastic. My viewership is growing. I planned out themes for the rest of the season. Theming shows seems to help attendance. But boy it is tough coming up with themes. If you have any cool show titles, let me know. The next Celtfather Live concert is scheduled for Thursday, March 11. It is a St Patrick's Day show. I am theming my Celtfather Live shows once again. So for this show, I will play fun Celtic songs for St Patrick's Day. Then I will take your song requests. And I'll play for another 30-60 minutes depending on how many requests I get. So if you have any song requests, let me know. This show is a ticketed event. Tickets are $8. You can get them in my MageRecords.com store. Spend $15 or more in the store, you'll also get access. And of course, if you are a Heroic member of the Gunn Runners Club, pledging $10+ per month, you will get free access. I haven't released any new video singles as I mentioned last month. But I am planning the next Travel Music Video. Stay tuned. 6:40 - IN THE STUDIO All of my tracks for Selcouth are done. Songs are sent to guest musicians. Now I am waiting on the final tracks so we can finish mixing the album. It's looking very good that I'll have the album done by April or May for Patrons. So I should have an official release by Gen Con or possibly Dragon Con. I also hope to release a bunch of singles in the lead up the official release. A new single from Dancing With Hobbits with Sam Gillogly will come out the day after St Patrick's Day. That's March 18. The track is called "Proudfoot Shuffle". I need to figure out what my next single will be. I'm also hoping to have a Brobdingnagian Bards single... or two, released in the coming months. We have a couple instrumental track we recorded for the release of I Will Not Sing Along. Andrew also recorded on my song "By Amazing Grace". So I plan to release that as a single at some point too. 8:03 - MERCH St Patrick's Day CDs are not selling phenomenally well. It's not selling bad. I mean, it IS SELLING. But I see it was a good idea not to do a serious reprint of that album. I'm hopeful that I'll sell out the copies I have before March 17. You can now buy the album in my MageRecords.com store on Bandcamp. They are $20. And you can still get the 4 CD Celtic Collection for just $40. These offers good from now until March 17, St Patrick's Day. Subscribe to my mailing list, you get a discount code to save 15%. I am putting together some new special offers for the coming months. Details. The Firefly Celtic Heartstring was really well received. I made a couple more. But again, I can't say they're selling spectacularly. About as well as I expected though. You can find them and my other Celtic Heartstrings in my store. 9:26 - CELTIC TRAVEL I finally canceled my castle booking in Scotland. Greetings Gunn Runner St Patrick's Day is re-released and it's back on CD for a limited time. Selcouth moves closer to completion. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. And Get a sticker and access this month's Celtfather Live by joining the Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. It's all on Celtfather Monthly for February 2021, show #274 0:22 - PODCASTS The Pub Songs Podcast started with some strong evergreen episodes. The first highlighted the re-release of my St Patrick's Day CD. More about that in a bit. Then there was an interview with Bruno Maia of Tuatha De Danann. I shared my recording of "Johnny Jump" and then shared Tuatha De Danann's Celtic rock version. I love that recording. I also did a Robert Burns Day episode. That one features Scottish kilt-loving songs. I have an interview with Devo Spice. He's a huge Doctor Who fan who wrote the song "Doctor of Gallifrey". He shares a little Whovian facts. I love these interviews. And I want to do more. But I realize that it might be easier if I only plan to do one episode per month. And then the second one is mostly music. I'm not saying that's how it will be. But the first episode of February is a Top 5 Irish Drinking Songs episode. So stay tuned for that. Over the past few years, I themed new episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. A couple years ago it was Celtic women. Last years was the love of planet earth and nature. I feel my themes go on the wayside though. I released a two hour episode at the start of this year where I announced a repeat of the Planet Earth theme. It was sort of a do over year for the podcast since last year's theme was replaced by the pandemic. Then we had an insurrection. It was then I realized I already established the theme for 2021 a few months ago when I said I was voting for Joe Biden. I voted for kindness back in the White House. And kindness for America. Well, if there's one thing I can hope and pray for our nation, it's that we can bring kindness back to our country. Less name calling. Less anger. More forgiveness. Kindness is what you can expect to see more from me through everything I do this year. I'm keeping that as my mantra as I peruse Facebook. If it's not kind, I try not to share it or like it or whatever. I want to see a return to Kindness. 2:40 - VIDEOS The new Coffee with The Celtfather is back. As usual, it's a free to watch show. I'm trying to have at least one show with my "hit songs" so newbies might be interested in watching too. So far shows are getting decent attendance. But I'll keep it up. Of course, if you enjoy the show, tips are always gratefully appreciated. The next Celtfather Live concert is scheduled for Thursday, February 18. I'm trying to decide how to theme this show. If you have any theme requests, let me know ASAP. That show is still a ticketed evening event. Tickets are $8. You can get them in my MageRecords.com store. Spend $15 or more in the store, you'll also get access. And of course, if you are a member of the Gunn Runners Club, you will get free access. I was struck at the end of last month with the question. Is it worth my time and effort to release video singles every week? I looked at the numbers and realized the answer is no. It's not the best strategy. Yes. If I record a stellar performance of a song during a Coffee show, then sure, it's probably a great idea to release a single like "Hallelujah" back in November. But I think that's the exception to the rule. So I'm starting to think about how to edit a solid music video highlighting my music instead. It's a little tougher to do. But oh well... 4:38 - IN THE STUDIO I finally had a good sit down to look at my recording schedule. What do I have left to do to finish Selcouth? One of the big things is deciding what instruments I want on a recording. I finally heard back from Nathan Deese. He's gonna start working on "Breathing". I think he will be perfect for this song. "Favor of a Dance" was sent to Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. But it sounds promising. Though I might've suggested an extra difficult way of recording. The song reminds me of West Side Story with The Jets and The Sharks doing a dance off battle. That's sort of what I want for this song. Again, I might be asking too much. "Kilty Pleasure" feels like it needs to be a rocked up. Since the beginning, it had a sort of Pogues feel to me. So when Jeff Shaw of The Muckers showed up at my Tucker Brewing Company gig this month, I decided to ask them. I'm patiently waiting to see what they come with. After chatting with The Muckers, I decided to work next on "Bright Side of Everything". That has a pop sort of to it. The first band that came to mind was Screeched Inn out of Canada. They are a Celtic rock band. But they have a super friendly sound. I sent the tracks to them. They started working on it immediately. And it's going right in the direction I hoped it would. Meanwhile, I finished recording and mixing "Battle of Aughrim/Star of Munster". I also recorded the autoharp tracks for "Just A Hero". This is the last song that I NEED on the album. And there are only two more songs that I HOPE to have on the album. If I can nail those vocals, I'll be on the final steps of finishing this. And if I can make it happen, I might get another guest musician for that song. Finally, St Patrick's Day was officially re-released at the beginning of the month. So far things are looking good. But there are some downsides. First, I screwed up and accidentally listed one song as Explicit. CD Baby said they can fix that. But it's gonna take a while. Will it be fixed by St Patrick's Day? I don't know. I also wish I waited to release the album in February. That's because the album is doing great on Spotify. Spotify is releasing new tracks to the release radar every week, I think. You'll see in the stats. Several songs already have a couple hundred new plays. Including "Purple Flower". I love that song, but didn't expect it to go anywhere because of the title. So color me impressed. I'm hoping it'll get some more visibility especially since I don't have any new tracks scheduled for release yet. So here's hoping it kicks butt by March 17. 8:18 - MERCH Gunn Runners asked that I release a physical copy of St Patrick's Day on CD. You can now buy that in my MageRecords.com store on Bandcamp. That's selling for $20. Or you can get a 4 CD Celtic Collection for just $40. These offers good from now until March 17, St Patrick's. I should also point out that St Patrick's Day is a seasonal release. That means, it won't be available again until next year. If you're subscribe to my mailing list, you get a discount code to save 15%. I don't remember what inspired it. But I just sat Inara down to do some art. I didn't feel like painting or drawing. I thought I should do the art I enjoy. So I went and grabbed the items I need to make Celtic Heartstrings. I sat down and thought, "What should I make a butterfly? A dragonfly? Hm. A firefly?" So I did a quick search to see what a firefly would like like. Of course, I immediately thought of the TV show too and lo and behold, I saw a beautiful picture of the ship and decided to try and make one using my techniques. I finished. And I gotta say, the final pendant is pretty cool looking. Seems others liked it as well. I'm gonna make a few and then we shall see if this will be come a regular part of my Celtic Heartstring products. 10:00 - CELTIC TRAVEL The Celtic Invasion of Scotland is officially delayed until next year. Obama asks Biden, "Did you take the high ground like I told you?" Biden replies, "I told him to shut up." I would like to say that I took the high ground these past four years. I did not either. Trump will go down in history as the most divisive president ever. No one has polarized America so much as Trump. That's one of his worst legacies. He intentionally pit Americans against Americans. That division has weakened us as a nation. So of course, I am happy that he is no longer the leader of our great country. He dragged us down. But now that he's gone. I see the high ground again. And I confess, I am ashamed. I allowed his petulant behavior to drag me down to his level. As it has with so many Americans. Yes. There will always be division. Especially with competing media sources telling us different extreme ideas. But I am ashamed that I allowed myself to become angry and nasty. I have no excuse for that. One of the many reasons I voted for Biden was to bring kindness back into the White House. Back into our nation. Sure, Biden is far from perfect. But he's kind. Or at least he's kinder than Trump could ever be. We need a kind president. Because that sets the tone of the nation. Kindness, generosity. Those are the way you build up a community of people. I still get Facebook posts of people lambasting the president or his supporters. But I know from talking to some that most are not bad people. Most just support a conservative ideal. I remember when I talked to conservatives in the run up to 2016. EVERY SINGLE ONE said their #1 issue was to reduce the national debt. It was not about the racist agenda Trump later pushed and used to divide us. Most called themselves fiscally conservative but socially liberal. These are people who just have a different opinions of the federal government. They believe in the same inalienable rights of our Constitution. The only difference is they don't want the government spending so much money on social services. That is not my enemy. I disagree with the role of the federal government. But that's a difference of opinion. What's more important is that we are kind to one another. I keep seeing a call for unity. I agree with it. I believe we need to take a step back and be kind to one another. Because it is very likely we are not seeing eye-to-eye because we are all just blinded by anger. The best way to beat anger and hate is by kindness and forgiveness. And if there's one thing I learned about forgiveness is that it does have to be unconditional. It also heals. It's magical. It doesn't mean we forget. It means we recognize our own negative contribution to the situation. We correct it. Then we ask forgiveness for our part, and we heal. Because never in the history of ever were there two different competing perspectives where one is right and the other is wrong. They both always screwed up. And that's the only way we can move forward. Not spouting conspiracy theories. Or blaming someone else for our own failures. But by recognizing our own fault in the situation. Because that's when we realize things aren't all as bad as they seem. We are able to see the high ground. Through the lies, through the anger and through the hatred. On the side is a world of kindness and healing. Thank you for supporting Sci F'Irish music at Celtfather.com! #CFMonthly

Elizabeth Essex is the award-winning author of critically acclaimed historical romance, including Reckless Brides and her new Highland Brides series. Her books have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award and Seal of Excellence Award, and RWA's prestigious RITA Award. The Reckless Brides Series has also made Top-Ten lists from Romantic Times, The Romance Reviews and Affaire de Coeur Magazine, and Desert Isle Keeper status at All About Romance. Her fifth book, A BREATH OF SCANDAL, was awarded Best Historical in the Reader's Crown 2013. When not rereading Jane Austen, mucking about in her garden, walking her beloved dogs, Ghillie and Brogue, or simply messing about with boats, Elizabeth can be always be found with her laptop, making up stories about heroes and heroines who live far more exciting lives than she. It wasn't always so. Long before she ever set pen to paper, Elizabeth graduated from Hollins College with a BA in Classics and Art History, and then earned her MA in Nautical Archaeology from Texas A&M University. While she loved the life of an underwater archaeologist, she has found her true calling writing lush, lyrical historical romance full of passion, daring and adventure. Elizabeth lives in Texas with her husband, the indispensable Mr. Essex, and her active and exuberant family in an old house filled to the brim with books. Joshua Ohmer: Most famous has to be Danny Boy, although it's not a favorite of mine. Then I'd say Whiskey in the Jar, Molly Malone... And if we can dip into modern Irish music, I'd say that The Cranberries' Zombie and probably something from U2, like Sunday Bloody Sunday should qualify as particularly famous Irish songs. Janine Rinker: That's tough. I've only learned a few... Molly Mallone, Paddy Works on the Railway, a verse-ish of Danny Boy. I'd probably go with The Wild Rover and Whiskey in the Jar as the last two. I'd occasionally hear "They Kept the Pig in the Parlor" from my dad's family, but have to say that's an anti-Irish song. With such a beautiful name as Spirit de la Mare, I guess you’d expect this week’s guest to be involved in the arts somehow. Well—you won’t be disappointed. Born in London to parents embedded in the Punk culture and educated at Roedean School for girls (where she is now Governor) Spirit was provided with the most diverse upbringing, and that is precisely why Spirit may be considered something of social chameleon. Spirit is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art, Freeman of the Guild of Entrepreneurs, as well as Trustee of ArtCan, arts writer, culture enthusiast and journalist, as well as founding editor of the award winning art magazine Brogue, due for re-release later this year. Spirit has dedicated her time fully to the growth and development of the creative industries and firmly believes this is how ‘’communities are tightened with strong bonds being created across age groups and societal difficulties”. Despite her ridiculous commitments, we met for a chat in the beautiful Haywood Gallery Café at the South Bank Centre—where Spirit is heavily involved in the promotion of the critically acclaimed new exhibition ‘’Kiss My Genders’’. “My whole life changed—if you can pick a point my life changed, it would be the moment I was taken to that school.” [10:00] Spirit was born to a pair of punk rock parents—something that likely helped shape her in a way that let her cruise against the traditional grains of society. At 3 she was sporting pink hair and ear piercing, sitting on her parents’ shoulders at punk rock shows. Her dive into an artistic life was one she had planned for quite some time, deciding that she would make it into Roedean School for girls to pursue her passions. Despite some not supporting this, she worked hard and ended up earning a full academic scholarship to the school, a school she has now been invited back as a Governor too all these years later. “Showing your art, showing people what’s possible—putting on performances, getting together and starting a poetry group—a book club—whatever it might be, it’s stealing time back from capitalism…it’s going ‘no’ this is ours.” [35:50] Accessibility to the arts is a problem Spirit sees across many lines, including class. She’s proud to work with the South Bank which puts on lots of free events. She’s seen first-hand the impact art can have on young children and adults alike, and she knows how life gets in the way of creativity. Many concerts are free in London and galleries can simply be walked into—art shouldn’t only be experienced by those of a certain pay grade. The Haywood Gallery has an exhibition called “Kiss My Gender” which is a celebration of gender fluidity in more than 30 artists across the decades. It aims to challenge the concept of a rigid gender—an eye opening task that has been sparking conversations left and right and getting rave reviews. Spirit is happy to be on the PR team for the exhibition, as she thrives on seeing artists getting attention—whether they are up and coming underdogs, or have been working across the century. Spirit is continuing to work on bridging communities and art, and she’s excited to connect visual art and spoken word poetry. You can follow Spirit and her work @ArtCanorg (https://www.instagram.com/artcanorg/) . Support this podcast

One Life Left prides itself on its news team. Ann has been with the show as a cub reporter and we've seen her grow into the excellent news journalist that you hear today. But she doesn't really get the support from Simon and Ste that she deserves. As you will hear in this week's episode where the lads don't expect her to get any proper journalism done with respect to Atari and their LGBT statement. You can expect to hear the All Apologies music next week.We didn't have to apologise to our Super-Special Guest this week who was Darren Grey from Roguelike Radio. He managed to help clear up the differences between Rogue and Roguelikes. Luckily we didn't ask him what the difference was between a Roguelike and The Like as it would have gotten terribly confusing. However, after our advice he will have to amend the name of his podcast slightly or he may be hearing from our legal team. Also on the show Simon asks a rather technical programming question. He's changed. Ann thinks of skinny jeans and Ste talks about cricket. They haven't changed. Sega Badawi reads the local news and Super Roger World speaks to his agent. And if you would like to change the list of contributors (by creating a new feature) then send something in to the usual address. Thingy's going to do one again and she's been away for AGES.There's a review of how our second #THIRDSDAY went down amongst the footy fans and Ann promoted the show during the Radius Festival by not actually mentioning the show. But that's because she's a journalist not a promoter. Plus Ste wasn't there to point at her, which is the usual gesture that makes her say our web address.Cheerio!Team OLL xLinks:https://twitter.com/dgrey0http://www.roguelikeradio.com/Track list:1. This week on Wrestling Mayhem Show 412, we talk all the latest headlines and more in pro wrestling, including: The ROH/NJPW crossover, which leads into conversation about which wrestling crossovers we would want to see happen. What wrestlers we think would taint the integrity of the WWEâ??s Hall of Fame. What wrestlers should be in the WWE Hall of Fame. Our Wrestlemania dreams for this year. Zack Ryder and his new gimmick. Wrestling part-timers, and if the Undertaker should be considered a part-timer like The Rock and co. Wrestlers who have stood up to John Cenaâ??s talk. Remember When: Best Wrestlemania builds. Brooklyn RAW. Razor Ramon being inducted into the Hall of Fame of WWE. DDP Yoga. Which wrestler we would want to have motivate us when working out. The lamb mask on RAW. What we learned from wrestling. Also make sure to: Follow our cast that manhandles you with the mayhem: @wrestlingmayhemshow, Mike Sorg (@sorgatron), DJ Lunchbox (@djlunchbox), Bobby (@bobbyfjtown), Hot Wheelz (@hotwheelzrwa), Matt Carlins (@mattcarlins), Jenn Carlins (@jenncarlins), Rizz (@theerizz), Mad Mike (@madmike4883) and Katie Dudders (@kdudders).
