In this episode, I sit down with singer-songwriter James Slater! James Slater has written songs for Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Jamey Johnson, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, and Martina McBride. James has pretty much seen it all. From living in places like Miami, the Panama Canal, and Switzerland, he has so many stories to share. After spending years writing in LA and touring Europe with guys like Huey Lewis and Bruce Hornsby, he ended up settling in Nashville with one really specific goal: to be this city's “piano man”. We're going to dive into his story where we learn how he wrote High Cost of Living (nominated for song of the year) with Jamey Johnson, and In My Daughter's Eyes, released by Martina McBride. He shares many more stories, like how he once ran into Garth Brooks at Pancake Pantry and that time he had three legends—Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and Rodney Crowell—cut his song, Open Season On My Heart. We discussed his remarkable career, working with country legends, and how authenticity has shaped his success. He performed a few hits and shared how perseverance and community have influenced his journey with music. James Slater joined us in the studio to talk through how to create a better workspace. James works in workplace design and technology, and helps businesses create intelligent workspaces that connect people, technology and environment. People get stuck working in offices and spaces that don't work, so why don't they fix this? It causes a disconnect between your teams and can be used much more effectively.
In an age of technological disruption and digital streaming services. live music has been the once place where musicians could still hope to earn enough to follow their dream or calling. But since March, even that tap has been turned off, as coronavirus restrictions mean venues must remain closed or operate at low capacities. Lots of freelance musicians have fallen through the gaps in financial support made available to the sector and a survey by the Musicians Union suggests one third may be forced to quit the industry. To get a better perspective, in this podcast episode, we hear from James Slater and Dan Hammersley, two professional musicians with the Royal Northern Sinfonia. By their own admission, as salaried employees James and Dan are better off than most musicians. But they also know well the hard work, long hours, repetitive practice and sacrifices made by every professional artist trying to make a living from their craft.
This week I had the pleasure of talking to James Slater. James is a director of music videos, commercials, documentaries and short films. He's made videos for artists such as (The Coral, Blossoms, Bill Ryder-Jones, Sam Fender, Circa Waves, Jamie T...) and his short film work has screened at festivals including the BAFTA qualifying London Short Film Festival. It was great to hear about James’ humble beginnings running around Liverpool shooting videos on mini DV to where he is now. He gives his insight on pitching and so much more. In the pod we talk about James’ videos for Sam Fender - Saturday, Circa Waves, Fire That Burns, Blossoms - Your Girlfriend and Bill Ryder-Jones - Wild Roses. James’ short There Are Other Forces also gets a mention. All ace work that I recommend you watch to enhance the listen. www.harrysherriff.com www.facebook.com/harryjjsherriff

With the help of James Slater from Sleep and Performance Analytics we discuss sleep measurement and the use of sleep trackers. I’m here with my family and friends…at place we consider to be the happiest place on earth. This is Key West. Why this is our happy place is the focus of this episode, and before you get the wrong idea: this show wasn’t sponsored by the Key West Travel Bureau…I understand that many of you have your own personal paradise’s…but this is mine. I’ve only been here once before, about a year ago, in March of 2012, for only three days. Long time listeners to Phedippidations might remember episode 287 titled “Hemingway’s Key and Life to its Top”. We’ll I’m back again, and this time we’re spending a full week.Key West is 129 miles southwest of Miami, and 94 statute miles north of Cuba. The city is smaller than New York’s Central Park and it’s official motto is “One Human Family”. Mile marker zero of US route 1 is located at 490 Whitehead Street, here in Key West, Florida. It’s the beginning of the road for this major east coast US Highway which runs 2,369 miles (or 3,813 km) all the way north to Fort Kent, Maine…the take out point for those of us who have canoed the Allagash River Waterway in the Northern Maine Woods. Fort Kent was the end of the road for a family camping trip I once cherished; with my Dad, and Nephew John Glenn…you’re welcome to listen to Fdip198 recorded in the summer of 2009 titled “Walking by Henry David Thoreau”…but for me, that’s all in the past. The World has Moved on…and there’s nothing there I care to listen to or dwell upon. Here in Key West I’m marking a new beginning. That so much of my life could changed in the years since I last strapped my canoe to the roof of my Jeep four years ago would have seemed hard to believe back then. But here we are, a few thousand days and miles ago and away: where I’m standing at mile zero of route 1, ready to make a new start, at the beginning of the road…where my Life 2.0 began. The last time I was here I talked to you about Life 2.0; and while I wasn’t really sure where that would lead me…it’s good to be back in Key West…a place that is, for me not only paradise, but the starting line for a new challenge and change. I’m going to become Steve Runner, again. Links: Go there: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g34345-Key_West_Florida_Keys_Florida-Vacations.html FitBit Force at .
