Matt Jenkins of Cloverdale Forge just came out with a great book called: ‘ Hooked- A Blacksmith's Study of Function Through Form'.It all came from complaining to his wife after feeling bored of forging the same simple hook day after day. His Wife and Business parter suggested he forge a different hook every day for a month which turned into a year. A huge undertaking that had its ups and downs; #366Hooks had a supportive online following as Matt used his time and creativity to complete this task. ‘Hooked' the book was born as a catalogue of this year long project with great insights, pictures and drawings of how to forge some of the different hooks. Matt is an Awesome Blacksmith who I've been following for years, and this book is a must have for any maker looking at how to execute creativity and work within the confines of a promise. Matthew I. Jenkins designed our beloved Carl and Master Shake... which is kind of funny considering Carl hates Shake. Today on the podcast we're talking with Matt, the man behind so many of our favorite characters. Matt's telling us all about the early years of the Atlanta animation industry (AKA the birthing grounds of Adult Swim), working side-by-side with the late great C. Martin Croker, and designing characters for Dave Willis & Matt Maiellaro on Aqua Teen. Other topics discussed include getting addicted to Clash Royale, the business of art, the (newfound) never-ending nature of Star Wars, and not getting fired from The Venture Bros. • Matt Jenkins on Instagram -- buy an original ATHF production cell OR commission him: https://www.instagram.com/matthewijenkins/ • Watch Pastacolypse for FREE: https://tubitv.com/movies/100003771/pastacolypse • Watch Yenor for FREE: https://www.adultswim.com/videos/specials/yenor-pilot ♫ The Beatles - Helter Skelter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk1hCSA89fc ♫ Phish - You Enjoy Myself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsvlZacyByQ ★ Support The Show + Get Extra Episodes • Patreon: patreon.com/dancingisforbidden ★ Amazon Affiliate Links - Support The Podcast At No Extra Cost! • Aqua Teen Forever Plantasm 4K: https://amzn.to/3Svy2ea • Aqua Teen Forever Plantasm BluRay: https://amzn.to/3dLcKKS • Aqua Teen Forever Plantasm Digital: https://amzn.to/3t8cqtv • Baffler Meal 20 Disc DVD Box Set: https://amzn.to/3fmznWf Timestamps: [00:00:00] Intro [00:04:30] Working on Plantasm [00:07:41] Matt's origin story [00:15:35] Early years in Atlanta animation [00:20:37] Working with C. Now, our feature story… Unvaccinated students and staff in the Montrose County School District will not be required to wear masks to start the school year. The district's spokesperson, Matt Jenkins said that the safety of all of the students and staff is still the number one priority. This policy comes after national and state public health agencies have directly required masks. But earlier this week the CDC updated federal guidance to recommend that everybody — vaccinated or not — wear masks indoors at schools. Other school districts on the Western Slope that have already announced mask policies also opted to avoid a mask mandate. Both Delta County 50J and Mesa County Valley School District announced that masks will not be required. Other districts are holding off on announcing their policies until the beginning of August. But this fall's COVID policy comes with the caveat. The plan is “subject to change depending on local public health conditions. Broader CDC guidelines for mask-wearing were also updated on July 27 to encourage people in counties with high community spread to wear masks. And as of yesterday the CDC has classified Montrose County as an area with high levels of community transmission. Vaccinations encouraged, but not required At least 65% of district staff have already gotten vaccinated. But less than half of county residents eligible for the vaccine have received at least one dose. That's significantly lower than the statewide average. Jenkins said that the district is not mandating vaccination for district employees and students 12 and older at this time. But Jenkins did say that the vaccine is an effective way that we're going to end the pandemic, The district is planning on offering opt-in vaccination clinics for eligible students and staff. Parents will be required to give consent for students to be vaccinated. To find out more about this story visit us at montrosepress.com. Now, some local history. Did you know the Flat Top-Peach Valley Recreation Area is 9,700 acres set aside for motorized and non-motorized recreation? It was originally designated for conservation in 1999. If you're inclined, there are 95 miles of “play areas” where cross-country motorcycle, ATV, and mountain bike riders can enjoy sport and adventure with the backdrop of some of Colorado's most beautiful scenery. Blondie Campbell has been dancing her way through life since she was a young girl. She found her lifelong dance partner in her high school sweetheart, Donald. Whether Campbell was playing music in school or in her dance band that she formed with her aunt, rhythmatic steps kept her going. Campbell was a bank teller by day and a dancer by night, frequenting the Montrose Pavilion Dance Club with her husband after it was formed in 1990. From classic waltz to ballroom dancing, Campbell would find fellowship and community out on the dance floor. The former bank teller took over the dance club in 2008 as the dance coordinator and is excited for the dance club to return from the year and a half hiatus the pandemic required. In the past, Montrose citizens have shown up for country western dancing, two stepping, rock and roll and even line dancing. And the dance club has no plans on changing their tune anytime soon. The dance club revival will take place on Saturday August 14 and August 28 with live performances from Ghost River and New Vision. The dance events will return the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 7:30 -11 p.m. Get your dancing shoes on Montrose! That's all for today, thank you for listening! Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's Wednesday July 14th and we're here to bring you a closer look at our top stories, events and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado. Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com Now, our feature story. Montrose County School District is still waiting for official COVID guidelines from the state. District spokesman Matt Jenkins said he predicts that the local policy won't be more aggressive than what the state decides. Governor Jared Polis did drop the statewide mandate in schools. Now, districts decide if fully vaccinated people can go maskless. And on July 1, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced that masks are no longer required in public schools for unvaccinated adults and children 11 and older. Jenkins said that the CDPHE and the Colorado Department of Education are working on new guidance for school districts that will be released next month. He predicts that the district will still encourage mask wearing in schools. Many teachers received vaccinations when they first became eligible in February, but the district has not yet said they'll require vaccinations. But other educational institutions in Colorado have already announced vaccination requirements for staff. Aurora Public Schools announced in May that all school staff are required to receive a COVID vaccination. And many of Colorado's major public colleges, including the University of Colorado, joined thousands of other colleges and universities when a COVID vaccination requirement for students, staff and faculty was announced in April. In Montrose, students 12 and older, who became eligible for the vaccine in May, are strongly encouraged to get shots before the start of the school year. During the previous academic year, the state provided rapid testing to the district. And although Colorado's pandemic-related regulations are being relaxed, the state is planning on deploying $173 million of federal funding to boost testing in public schools. The goal is to test students and staff every week. But it kicked up when COVID restrictions closed off other entertainment options. So it's understandable that the U.S. Forest Service is looking for hard data about the uses of and visitor experience at the Blue Lakes area. Because of the surge in visitors, officials have reported management challenges, and safety issues. Now, Western Colorado University's Center for Public Lands is leading a study. A webinar is slated for July 22nd. The Blue Lakes public feedback project aims to gather the information needed for future management decisions. The information they'll seek includes the number of visitors and what they use the area for. They'll also look at water quality. The Forest Service will also conduct an environmental analysis for the Blue Lakes planning area that assesses trails, facilities, parking, and signs. Now, our feature story… Montrose High School needs a new mascot. A recently passed bill bans Native American mascots at public schools in Colorado. This means Montrose High School and Centennial Middle School need to select new mascots. Otherwise they may need to pay a $25,000 monthly fine. Montrose County School District spokesman Matt Jenkins explained that at this point, it's out of their hands because it's required by law. Montrose High School's current mascot is the Indians. A totem pole is still prominently displayed on the football field. The mascot for Centennial Middle School is the Braves and the official logo is a Native American man wearing a headdress. Jenkins elaborated that selecting a new mascot will be a “community effort” over the course of the next 12 months. He also said that the school mascot is rich in culture, and the community holds tightly to the pride they have in their high school mascot. So what exactly does the Bill state? Senate Bill 21-116 bans Native American mascots from publicly funded Colorado schools starting. If schools have agreements with a Native American tribe to use the mascot, then they are allowed to keep the mascot. One example of this is Arapahoe High School in Littleton. Discussions to change Montrose's mascot have been underway since at least 2002, when a Greeley-based group called for change. Then, in 2015, a similar bill failed in the senate. But now, with Democratic control in both chambers, the newer version of the ban was passed. One thing to note is that the elected officials representing Montrose at the capitol voted against the bill. Governor Jared Polis is expected to sign the bill into law soon. Approximately 24 schools across Colorado will be affected. To learn more visit us at montrosepress.com. - Now, some local history. This week's local history is brought to you by England Fence. The canyon's name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day. Native Americans had known the canyon to exist for a long time before the first Europeans saw it. They are known to have avoided the canyon out of superstition. The first official account of the Black Canyon was provided by Captain John Williams Gunnison in 1853. - And finally, before we go we'd like to remember the life of Mardell June Sanburg Sanders. Mardell was born to a pioneer family who arrived in the Montrose area in the 1870s. Mardell was an adventurous child, who tagged along behind her older siblings. She told stories of how she rode bareback on horses that the family raised for the U.S. Cavalry. As a child, she attended school in Montrose and graduated from Montrose High School. She then attended Western State College and Mesa College. She married Shirley Sanders in 1953. To this union they had five children. Her spirit continues in her children, their spouses and her 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mardell was a mother, a rancher and a real estate mogul. She had a unique way of letting a sassy child or animal know they were on the wrong path. She loved animals, loved to drive fast, and loved a good cup of coffee. She had a great sense of humor and would light up her grandchildren even at the end. She was generous to a fault. Her last wish was for everyone to be kind to each other. Mardell will be greatly missed. Thank you for taking a moment with us to remember and celebrate her life. - That's all for today, thank you for listening! Students have today off from school as Montrose County School District employees receive their COVID-19 vaccinations. The district sent a letter to families notifying them of the school closure after the state announced that 35% of vaccine supplies will be earmarked for school staff. According to the letter vaccine doses will be administered over the next three Fridays. The letter also says that getting educators vaccinated means that they will be better protected from the virus, and it will reduce the number of quarantines necessary. This will reduce interruptions to in-person learning, and help ensure that parents can report to their own workplaces without child care or remote learning demands. Ahead of today's vaccinations, Superintendent Carrie Stephenson discussed the plan during Tuesday's board of education meeting. The district is working in partnership with public health to administer the first round of vaccines. Matt Jenkins, MCDS's public information officer said that they had initially narrowed down the first registration to people who see kids on a routine basis. But upon learning of the availability of more doses, the district opened up the registration to office personnel. There are roughly 1,000 people employed in the district, which includes coaches and club sponsors. Looking strictly at the building staff, there are around 750 people. Board member Eric Kelley asked the question - what's the plan for teachers who decide not to receive the vaccine? Superintendent Stephenson says staff who elect not to get the vaccine for personal or medical reasons will still be required to be quarantined if exposed to the virus. Although staff will be vaccinated over the coming weeks and fully vaccinated in the coming months, the district's COVID-19 mitigation strategies will remain in place for now to keep everyone safe. Gov. Polis said that two weeks after educators' second dose, they no longer have to quarantine if they have COVID exposure Vaccinations for educators is one step closer to a return to normalcy as the district remains committed to welcoming students back to 100% in-person instruction. She was also the first woman in the United States to receive a jockey's license. Anna pursued her professional horse racing career from, winning many races at state and county fairs. She then pursued a second career as a trick rider. She was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2004. And finally, before we go we'd like to take a moment to remember the life of James Austin. Jim left this earth with the same bravado that he lived by. As anyone who knew him would agree. Jim was larger than life. Whether you crossed paths with him at KU, where he was student body president, in Montrose where he was city manager, or Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Atlanta, Mexico, Copenhagen or Spain --- you surely remember a man of intelligence, humor and creativity who had a big voice and a bigger heart. Jim did not walk into a room unnoticed ... and if he did, he'd make sure to get your attention. His greatest love was Patty, his soulmate and wife of over 60 years. Jim and Patty were together their entire lives — their “first date” captured in a photo of the two of them sharing a tire swing at age 3. Jim also went through life with an amazing cadre of close friends — too many to mention by name. In addition to Patty, he leaves behind a family who adored him. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Jim's life. That's all for today, thank you for listening! It’s episode number 96 and I have Caitlin Morris from Frederick, Maryland. Let me introduce her by reading her “about” web page from her http://www.mscaitlinsschool.com/ . “Ms. Caitlin hangs out with the misfits and scallywags. She sings loudly and out of tune. She is partial to walks in the rain. But the most important thing is this: Caitlin loves blacksmithing. The Vermont native runs Ms. Caitlin’s School of Blacksmithing in Maryland, which is dedicated to sharing the craft with as many unsuspecting people as possible. She also teaches at other schools up and down the east coast.“ We had a great interview discussing her background and some great info on scholarships, how she has secured a few and some tips on how you can. What We Talked About Caitlin teaches blacksmithing at her own business “Miss Caitlin's School of Blacksmithing” and at other educational institutions along the East coast of the US. Caitlin opened her school of blacksmithing in Frederick Maryland in 2015. Her blacksmith background began at the John C Campbell Folk School in 2009, her first class was taught by Matt Jenkins. She took a week’s vacation off from her day job to travel to the school for the week-long class. Soon after learning how to blacksmith Caitlin immediately started sharing her experience and teaching the craft to her friends. And so the journey of becoming a better teacher began then. Caitlin talks about the scholarships she has been granted to help with the financial aspects of taking a week-long blacksmith class. Her scholarship advice is to apply to as many as you can because this gives you the practice of writing about yourself and why you deserve a scholarship. Your verbiage will become refined through the process. One of her suggestions for metal sculpture inspiration is to look at the yearly “Metal Design International” books, they feature around 8 blacksmiths around the world. Guest Intro paragraph Matt Jenkins is a Winnipeg, Canada-based blacksmith and owner of Cloverdale Forge. He got his start in blacksmithing by spending college summers at a Canadian national park doing historical re-creations for tourists. He later studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. He now works days as a mechanical engineer and nights and weekends in his own shop. Last summer he took first place in Drawing and Design and the World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy. What We Talked About Matt followed in his father's footsteps by working summers at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site as a blacksmith doing historical re-creations for the public. He recalls some of the funniest questions people asked him and the jokes his dad used to play on the tourists. Matt received a degree in mechanical engineering, but also studied at the John C. Campbell school in North Carolina, where he still teaches one week every summer. This year his class will take place in September. He works two full-time jobs. During the day, he's a mechanical engineer for a custom metal manufacturer doing computer aided drafting. On nights and weekends he's in his own shop, Cloverdale Forge, on his family's farm. His shop is 400 square feet and he's looking at doing an expansion soon. Matt teaches classes at Cloverdale and has 4 planned for this summer doing basic beginner blacksmithing. He's tyring to build a blacksmithing community and an appreciation for the art in a fairly isolated location. Last summer Matt won 1st place at the World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy in the Drawing and Design competition. The contest theme was trash cans. His drawing can be seen at http://www.biennaleartefabbrile.it/il-campionato/classifica-2015/ Matt's trip to Italy was part of a larger European trip he took with two other blacksmith friends. They attended a conference in the Czech Republic where Matt won the “longest spike competition” in part of a Blacksmith Triathlon. They also visited Germany and blacksmith friend Gosta Gablick. “It's fun traveling with other blacksmiths because they look at the same weird things that I do,” Matt says. Matt is also a part of an annual art event in Winnipeg called “Nuit Blanche” where artists create and display their works overnight. “We pull the forges into city square and build something,” Matt says. “In our area, the only time you experience blacksmithing is at a fur trading post, so to show people it's not just repair of muskets and traps, I bring the art to them on that night.” Matt uses many outlets to advertise and sell his products including a business web site with a blog, Facebook, Instagram and Etsy. The Etsy site works well for advertising and exposure, Matt says, but doesn't bring in huge sales. If Matt could meet one blacksmith, dead or alive, he says he would choose the “nameless guys” who've been doing it forever. “Everyone says the artistic stuff, but the art comes from me. I want to learn the skills.” Guest Links Web Page: cloverdaleforge.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/cloverdaleforge/ Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CloverdaleForge Twitter: https://twitter.com/cloverdaleforge Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cloverdaleforge/ Stia Drawing and Design website - http://www.biennaleartefabbrile.it/the-championship/regulation-design-contest/ A Big Thank You to today’s sponsor – Adirondack Folk School, www.adirondackfolkschool.org If you enjoyed this episode, I would love it if you would support the show by: telling your friends. sharing this episode using the social sharing buttons below. subscribing to the show and leaving a rating and review in iTunes.
