Stand by race fans, the countdown to the 49th Annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is almost over. In just a couple of days the city streets of Long Beach will be shut down to everyday traffic and the sounds of roaring engines will reverberate off of the buildings around the convention center, arena, Hyatt hotel and Aquarium of the Pacific. Headlining the event this year will once again be the NTT IndyCar Series with practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday, while a Sunday morning warm-up and main-event race will be on Sunday. Once again IMSA will be the headline race on Saturday afternoon featuring the GTP cars and GTD (GT3) cars. No GTD Pro category this year which means that some of the pro teams will drop down to the Pro/Am category to have another shot at a win.  Heading into Long Beach on a roll is last year's Indy 500 champion and 2022 AGPLB winner, Josef Newgarden, who won the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona this year in a Penske Porsche and the season's first Indy car race at St. Pete. Two-time NTT IndyCar Series Champion Alex Palou is also a winner this year at the non-points Million Dollar Challenge at Thermal Club last month by romping away from his competition. Former Long Beach winner and pole-sitter Colton Herta also won the 12 Hours of Sebring while his teammate and last year's winner here, Kyle Kirkwood, also won his class at Sebring. This long-standing event is rich in the team's data books so trying to carve out an advantage over the competition is always difficult. Expect to see some scraped up race cars and white-walled tires as every driver will be pushing to the extreme limits to try and find lap time in qualifying. New for this year's schedule will be the historic Indy cars. There are numerous entries spanning decades in the sport with incredibly interesting history and pedigree. Dennis Firestone (who was 1980 CART rookie of the year) will be racing the Dan Gurney AAR Eagle that he raced at the Indy 500 back in 1982. Tony Kanaan will be racing an Offy-powered McLaren and has promised to push hard to win! SRO GT America racing will take the place of the Porsche Carrera Cup this year with a wide variety of manufacturers in the field such as Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Calloway Corvette, Lamborghini, Mercedes, and Porsche. Robby Gordon's popular high-flying trucks return along drifting.  This year's Saturday night concert has country music on tap featuring country stars Gretchen Wilson, Eddie Montgomery, and David Lee Murphy. Don't forget Thunder Thursday on Pine on April18th which is Free to the public where there'll be a pit stop competition and much more. For more information, please visit: www.gplb.com. Note: Jim Michaelian is the president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. During this year's press day, we had the opportunity to hear directly from him on what to expect this year and the challenges of putting on such an event now in its 49th year. Enjoy! Stone Senate has been called “a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band”. While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, it is important to note Stone Senate is most definitely not a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further and making a name for themselves in the world of modern country rock. The band is fronted by vocalist/ guitarist Clint Woolsey's smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence. Meanwhile stage left and stage right are burning down with dual lead guitars/vocals of James Beau Edwards and Brother Ted Hennington. Add to that the bonded rhythm section of Kieran Cronley on bass and David “DZ” Zettler on drums/ vocals, and you have caught lightning in a bottle. Stone Senate has toured with Bulletboys, Uli Jon Roth, Davisson Brothers Band, and Tantric, and direct support for bands such as Styx, Collective Soul, Jackyl, Cowboy Mouth, Saliva, Little Texas, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Quiet Riot, Asleep at the Wheel, Lit, Alien Ant Farm, Tom Kiefer Band, Billy Gibbons and the BFG's, Tim Montana, Uncle Kracker, Rehab, David Alan Coe, Whitford – St Holmes, David Lee Murphy, Andy Ross, Mike Zito, John Micheal Montgomery, Eddie Montgomery, and Confederate Railroad to name a few. www.stonesenate.com Creator and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Showrunner and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. Hey all. This episode was recorded by Doug and myself Tuesday, January 23rd, and I was just finishing the editing and about to distribute it on the morning of Thursday the 25th. This was as the Wall Street Journal and the Affidavit were coming out about Vince McMahon. Together, Doug and I decided to hold off on releasing the episode until Saturday, as it didn't feel right.  That being said, the episode itself is still in its initial edit, and without any knowledge of the civil lawsuit against McMahon, John Laurenitis, and the WWE, we make references to all of them in a similar context to that of the lawsuit. Our intention is not to make light of what the victim went through. In fact, we wholeheartedly comend and support the victim in this case, and any case similar to this, for being strong, and bringing true attention to the heinous acts of deplorable people and institutions. I speak for myself and the podcast that everyone involved, or were complicit in what happened to Ms. Grant, and the numerous other victims of the McMahons and the WWE, in saying that they should rot in whatever speakable form of hell one can believe in. Anyone who comes to the defense of these demons shall also face similar castigation. If you want to skip this episode that is completely understandable, as we will have another one out later. Haddock recently released the first taste of new music in nearly 2 years with “Wind It Down” and “Better Than Your Memory”, and is slated to release a collaboration with Jon Wolfe in the coming months. The new project follows Haddock's early 2020 Red Dirt Texas album release which has produced 3 Top 15 Texas Country singles. The Texas A&M Senior clocks more than 150 tour dates a year and has recently opened for artists including Randall King, Steve Wariner, Kevin Fowler, Casey Donahew, Roger Creager and more.Currently boasting more than 3 million streams, Haddock has tracks featured on Spotify's Texas Music Now, Apple Music's Don't Mess With Texas and Amazon Music's Texas Forever playlists. His Hawaiian mother was a notable Hula Dancer, and his Arkansas born father was a multi-instrumentalist that loved Country Music. He ran a successful demo recording studio out of his home and began touring with many great artists, including David Lee Murphy, John Michael Montgomery and Country Music Hall of Fame Members, Alabama, whom he still tours with today. However, he knew his bond with his musical brothers, Monty and James, would always be his focus and passion. Raised in Hardin County, KY (about halfway between Louisville and Nashville), Kevin grew up in “mid-shift” of what is defined as country music. He has served as a supporting act for several BIG names in country music; such as Chris Young, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, David Lee Murphy, Joe Diffie, Maddie & Tae, Reilly Green, Ryan Hurd, and several more. He has played at several popular venues/festivals across the country, including CMA Music Festival, the 2019 NFL Draft, Kentucky Derby Festival, KY Bourbon Festival, Freedom Hall (Former Louisville Cardinals Men's Basketball Arena), Blake Shelton's Ole Red (All Locations), and Tootsie's Orchard Lounge. Because of this, his influences span several generations. From the boot-scootin', honky-tonk sounds of Brooks and Dunn, George Strait and Hank Jr., to modern-day hits of Thomas Rhett, Eric Church, and Keith Urban. His songs combine his songwriting, performing abilities, and work ethic, along with his genuine love and appreciation of country music as a whole, and you have someone who can compete with Nashville's finest. 2018 got momentum started for Kevin and his own music career. Kevin independently wrote his first single, “Hell of a Good Time”, which captures the memories of Kevin and his buddies growing up through late high school and college. It is the first single off his debut EP, Lookin' For A Party; and the song reached #15 on the New Country Artists Charts. On November 29, 2019, Kevin released "Lookin' For A Party", his second single and title track of the debut EP. “[Lookin' for a Party] is the life of a musician on the road-- a life I've lived since I was 16," Kevin says. "When you are out there, and you're going city to city... You see a lot of things... and a lot of interesting people. Literally, Class A's to the bottom of the barrel-- the rough ones! This song puts them all in one room together. Some are just there for the beer and some are lookin' for a party. That is how it goes in the dives and the clubs! You see all of them." The success of this single led to it being a JMA nomination for Song of the Year in 2020, and Kevin was also nominated for Rising Artist of the Year. His debut EP was released on Sept 1, 2020. On the same day, Kevin released his third (and current) single, "Hook, Line, and Sinker", which is a record-breaking single in its own right! Within 24 hours of release, the song had tens of thousands of streams and continues to climb as his most-streamed single to date. Kevin is currently working on the currently untitled EP #2 and is set to release the first single off it this summer. We listen to his song, Hook, Line, and Sinker for this episode. Find more of his music on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, YouTube, Tidal, etc. Follow along with Kevin's musical career on all social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok. You can also visit his website. Kevin is planning a tour all over the country, which includes dates in New York, Orlando, Chicago, Gatlinburg, Lexington, Hershey, Las Vegas, and more! Vassar has a virtual livestream series and Circle All Access TV show Phil Vassar is one of country music's most prominent singer/songwriters and was racking up hits on the radio before he began his own recording career. Vassar's reign of signature songs include 10 No. 1 singles and 26 Top 40 hits, including "Carlene," "Just Another Day in Paradise," "Six-Pack Summer," "When I Love You," and many more. Vassar's songwriting career blossomed in the mid-'90s when he landed a publishing contract with EMI and penned hits for Collin Raye ("Little Red Rodeo"), Alan Jackson ("Right on the Money"), Tim McGraw ("For a Little While"), Jo Dee Messina ("Bye Bye," "Alright"), and Blackhawk ("Postmarked Birmingham"). Since he can't tour due to the ongoing pandemic, the award-winning singer/songwriter created a virtual series that will make fans feel like they're hanging out at a retro piano bar, much like the venues where Vassar got his start. The livestream series airs every other Tuesday at 8 pm ET and features Vassar covering well-known songs by Billy Joel, Elton John, James Taylor, Jackson Brown, and Kenny Rogers, as well as requests from fans via social media. This year marks 20 years since "Just Another Day In Paradise" hit the top of the charts, marking his first-ever No. 1 as a recording artist. Earlier this year, he released his long-awaited tenth studio album, Stripped Down, featuring songs he's written but never recorded in the past 20 years, and new music, including a duet with his daughter Haley. In addition to the new album, Vassar's TV series Phil Vassar's Songs from the Cellar launched on the Circle Network. The weekly series, produced by NashPhil Cellars and The Nice Kids, featured all-star celebrity guests including Mike Tyson, Cam, Carrot Top, Jessie James Decker and more. The second season is underway. Check local listings. The interview was conducted by Buddy Iahn the same day Vassar was nominated for the 2020 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Vassar and I discuss the honor of being nominated -- although it wasn't until early November that others were chosen for this induction this year -- his career, both livestream and TV series' and his daughter's foray into the music industry. A couple of weeks after our interview, it was announced that Vassar would be headlining Christmas 4 Kids (C4K) fundraising livestream concert on November 23rd. Old Dominion's Matt Ramsey, STYX's Tommy Shaw, Lonestar, Craig Morgan, Jeffrey Steele, David Lee Murphy, Terri Clark, David Nail, Billy Dean, Abby Anderson and Lexie Hayden all joined Vassar during the live set. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Today’s episode features a true Texas Songwriting Legend: Ray Wylie Hubbard. For those who follow Texas and Red Dirt Music you are almost certainly familiar with Ray.  He’s a legend in the scene and tons of artists have covered his material.  Many artists look at their chance just to co-write with Ray as a pinnacle in their careers. Known for his bar-room sing-along anthem, Red Neck Mother, Ray started gaining notoriety in the 70’s when Jerry Jeff Walker made the tune a main-stay for dark, smoky honky-tonks.  Then, over the years he also became known for penning other great signature songs like “Snake Farm”, recorded by podcast alum Paul Thorn, as well as “I Wanna Rock n Roll” recorded by Red Dirt legends in their own right, Cross Canadian Ragweed. One of my favorite songs that pays homage to Ray is the song “Good One Comin On” recorded by Blackberry Smoke and Trent Wilmon, and written by David Lee Murphy, Gary Nicholson, and Lee Roy Parnell. We get into Ray’s backstory in the episode and he takes us all the way from his start during the Cowboy/Hippie movement in Austin revolving around the Armidillo World Headquarters, us to his most recent projects featuring performances with names like Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, Chris Robinson and Ashley McBryde. If you haven’t checked out the YouTube video of the song “Bad Trick” here’s the LINK. I know Carly and I were both honored to have this chance to interview Ray. So here we go with episode #80 of The Troubadour featuring our conversation with Ray Wylie Hubbard. He tried writing a book in the 1970s, but it was never finished. In 2014, he felt the urge to write a Western novel. However, he needed something different than what was on the market. What about a young Christian Gunfighter? That book turned into a series of seven books that won First Place for Best Westen Series in 2015 from Texas Association of Authors. It's a short chat... when you do these radio row events, you don't get a chance to dive too deep.  But it was cool to meet a guy who's been churning out hits for decades. The photo we took at the end cracks me up... he grabbed one of the mics to make it look like he was the one interviewing me.

And, Jeffrey...well, he had to watch the kids while Amanda got her hair did. So... In their relaxing, almost syrupy, manner, BJ and Alan cover his "small town" start in music to his big city debut on the Grand Ole Opry. He reveals the little know fact that Colt Ford is a college-educated PGA Golf Instructor. Alan reveals his uncomfortable passion for Mark Wills music (Alan: "But, he is The Man!"). One look and you would never think that Phil would be an accountant. He’s not. Phil Shouse screams and was born out of rock ’n’ roll. Phil was noticed from a gig that David Lee Murphy’s management was at on a Sunday afternoon on a pedestrian bridge. The guides learn that you never know who is watching, and what makes your personality or style can be marketable. That show was a catalyst of a healthy career as a professional gun slinger. Phil has played with Chris Cagle, John Corabi, Mindy Mcready, Morningwood, and his last artist gig was Rodney Atkins of five years. Don’t feel bad for Phil, because he is the happiest and busiest he’s ever been juggling his own projects. Phil co-owns Thee Rock N Roll Residency and Mutt Merch, and as well as juggling his tribute bands. The Residency is a weekly rock and roll extravaganza in Nashville, TN that invites guests from the music industry to take part in. They’ve had people like Alice Cooper, Chuck Garric (Beasto Blanco & Alice Cooper), Mark Slaughter (Slaughter), Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls), and so much more. In recent years Phil has taken the Residency on the road and on the ocean! Phil has amazing stories of celebrity run ins and even deaths. The guides test out Phil’s fashion skills with this weeks bit, “Who Wore It Best”. Go to the SMIpodcast youtube channel to enjoy the visuals of the bit. Brandon and Jason dedicate some time to figure out the business of tribute bands, and the crazy amount of money and more possibilities for musicians. Phil’s story is awesome because there is some self discovery involved. Over drinks they discuss the pressure for players to be a producer, writer, or session player. By Phil’s own story, it sounds like that you shouldn’t put yourself in a box. In this episode you get to hear a taste of Phil’s original music project. Tell Phil what you guys think about the tunes. If you're a player and struggling on what to do next or you’re just trying to figure it out. School is in session cause…SCHOOL SHOUSE ROCKS!
