Dan Astles on music, masculinity and sad but beautiful story that inspired his debut album

Welcome to episode 202 with Dan Astles, who is a musician and singer songwriter from Liverpool who makes music under the name Astles, either on his own or alongside a 10 strong musical collective called The Balloon Moon Orchestra. Dan has a new album on the way that has a very sad but beautiful story behind it.  Dan's uncle Joseph died by suicide before he was born, but it was often commented on by the family that they had things in common.  While searching through his Nana's loft, Dan found glimpses in to his uncle's life through a collection of albums, posters, gig tickets and assorted memorabilia from a fellow music lover. Amongst this musical treasure trove was also a mix tape titled ‘Soundtrack for the 21 Bus Home' and it was this collection of songs, and everything he found with it, that inspired his most recent E.P and upcoming album, which is named after his uncle's handcrafted playlist. In this episode I chat to Dan about his uncle's passing, how it has impacted his family through the years and how he felt that impact around him growing up. We chat about his upcoming album and how his uncle's collection of songs inspired him to reflect on his own struggles with his mental health. And we also chat about growing up as a young lad on Merseyside while embracing the softer side of masculinity, working with local legends Bill Ryder-Jones and Mick Head and what it was like to play one of his tunes for Sir Paul McCartney. Dan and I were acquaintances before having this conversation but since chatting I feel like I can call him a mate.  We were able to record this episode in person, over a cup of tea, and it was an absolutely lovely way to spend a morning! In this episode of MyMusic, host Graham Coath sits down with the captivating singer-songwriter, Amelia Coburn. With a string of accolades under her belt including being a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Finalist, UKE Magazine Breakthrough Artist winner, and participant in the English Folk Expo Mentor Scheme, Amelia's star is on the rise. Her music, often likened to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, and Nick Drake, effortlessly blends folk and jazz influences into beguiling original compositions. As Amelia prepares to embark on her first tour with a full band, listeners are treated to a preview of what's to come, with festivals and a winter tour on the horizon. Join Graham Coath as he uncovers the magic behind Amelia Coburn's unique musical journey, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into the mind of an emerging folk and jazz sensation. Amelia: You know, I think a lot of the times when I'm writing, I'm trying to find idioms and metaphors. And I was writing the song "Seesaw," and I just came across... I thought it was quite a well-known phrase. I just typed in, like, you know, moon phrases, and I came across "Between the Moon and the Milkman," and I was like, I really like that because it can evoke a lot of different things. It can mean physically between that time, but also like that space at nighttime, for me, is quite... I find it really interesting because a lot of the songs were written at nighttime. 0:01 - Introduction by Graham Coath 0:03 - Graham Coath expresses excitement about the upcoming discussion on a fantastic album with guest Amelia Coburn. 0:08 - Introduction of guest Amelia Coburn. 0:20 - Graham Coath introduces the music interlude from Analogue Trash. 0:35 - Analogue Trash music interlude. 1:01 - Graham Coath comments on the energetic nature of the music and its suitability for the podcast's timing. 1:10 - Graham Coath praises Amelia Coburn's album, "Between the Moon and the Milkman," as one of the most important albums in the last five years. 1:21 - Discussion about the origin of the album title and its significance to Amelia Coburn's creative process. 3:01 - Conversation about the challenges of genre classification and pigeonholing in the music industry. 4:07 - Comparison between Amelia Coburn's musical influences and her unexpected similarity to Kirsty MacColl. 5:28 - Discussion about Amelia Coburn's admiration for Neil Hannon and his influence on her songwriting. 6:05 - Conversation about the songwriting process, including the role of dissonance and experimentation with chords. 7:26 - Amelia Coburn's approach to writing lyrics and the importance of melody over lyrics. 9:18 - Discussion on the pronunciation and enunciation of lyrics, influenced by Amelia Coburn's background. 10:42 - Graham Coath highlights Amelia Coburn's ability to blend pop and folk elements in her music. 11:52 - Discussion about the duration of time taken to write and compile the album. 13:45 - Amelia Coburn's experience of working with producer Bill Ryder-Jones and their shared musical influences. 16:21 - Surprise and gratitude expressed by Amelia Coburn regarding the success and positive reception of the album. 17:53 - Mention of Paul Heaton's acknowledgment of the album, indicating potential future opportunities. 18:50 - Discussion about upcoming festival appearances and plans for touring with a band. 19:33 - Graham Coath offers suggestions and support for Amelia Coburn's future musical endeavors.

Bill Ryder-Jones was guitarist/vocalist for the West Kirby Merseyside band The Coral, who were successful in releasing 5 top 10 albums in mid 2000s, starting out as teenagers.  His latest solo album is complete with classy hooks and rousing choruses, and his closely mic-ed voice is fragile, delicate, even on the edge of croaky, giving the impression he's sharing intimacies directly with the listener.  Featuring lush pop hooks and even school assembly choirs of kids - the songs sound triumphant and powerful and happy even if most of them are dark, sad and of lost love. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to episode 172 with Bill Ryder-Jones, who is a singer-songwriter, musician, music producer and composer. Bill was a co-founder of The Coral, which they started when he was 13, and he played lead guitar on the first five albums, eventually leaving in 2008. It was around then that Bill started to experience depression, agoraphobia and panic attacks which would eventually lead him to leave The Coral at the height of their success.  At that time, it wasn't made public that Bill's mental health issues where a result of witnessing the death of his brother in a freak accident while they were on a family holiday as children.. After the breakdown that followed, Bill started to work on his solo career and to date has released 5 albums under his own name and has collaborated with the Arctic Monkey, Graham Coxon and Paloma Faith and produced records for the likes of Mick Head and Saint Saviour and many others. His latest record, Iechyd da, was released in January to a fanfare of praise and glowing reviews and its already a contender for album of the year. In this episode I chat to Bill about the album, the songs and the upcoming tour. We chat about Bill's experiences with agoraphobia and how it affects him day to day and in relationships and we chat about touring, drinking, getting older and making music. We also chat about panic attacks and dealing with fear and being alone how sometimes choosing an unhealthy coping strategy is choosing the lesser of many possible evils. I loved chatting to Bill.  He is such a lovely man and we laughed a lot despite getting in to some really deep topics.  I'm a huge fan of his music so getting the opportunity to ask him about it was a personal podcasting highlight for me and I can't thank him enough for his openness and his time. He co-founded the Coral, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. Since then he's pursued a solo career, writing his own albums and film scores, as well as producing and playing on records for other artists including the Last Shadow Puppets, Graham Coxon, Paloma Faith, the Wytches and Hooton Tennis Club. He's recently released his fifth solo album Iechyd Da (which translates as "good health" in Welsh). Singer-songwriter and composer Anna Calvi is known for her operatic singing voice and virtuosic guitar skills. She's the only solo artist to have received three consecutive Mercury Prize nominations, going on to become a judge for the awards, and her other work includes everything from scoring seasons five and six of the acclaimed TV series Peaky Blinders to a stage production of the opera The Sandman. Vocalist and guitarist Poppy Hankin leads London-based indie-rock trio Girl Ray. Their sound has taken them on a journey from C-86 style indie-rock to uplifting pop music; their third album Prestige, released last year, sees them reclaim disco music as a celebration of sexuality and outsider culture.

In this episode of Sync Music Matters I'm talking to Emmy Award Winning Michael Price. Michael talks about his journey from the music department of WHSmith's to composing for shows like Sherlock and Unforgotten.  He reveals the challenges of composing music over multiple series and how his creative approach changes when writing music as a solo artist.  He talks fondly of his time working with the late great Michael Kaman who apparently used to try and improvise action cues in a single take.  Several life milestones that have changed the ways that he wants to create and write music. In Episode 7 Danny Mulhern talks about improvisation and flow state which Michael also draws on heavily to be at his creative best. Michael Price Biog Emmy Award winning Michael Price has composed music for TV shows such as Sherlock, Dracula, and Unforgotten. He has received numerous award nominations and was recently nominated for a BAFTA and an Emmy for his work on Dracula with David Arnold. “I had to move back into my mothers house,I was 23 I had to share a bed with her because I was in such a state” What a privilege to go deep on the topics of breakdown, mental health, purpose, trauma and the music industry with Bill Ryder Jones! Bill has been in the music industry for 20 years, starting his first band at 13, signing a record deal by the age of 16 & co-founding the band The Coral. He has since developed his career as a solo artist, singer-songwriter, musician and producer as well as talking openly about his mental health. The experience of childhood trauma followed by the pressures of being a young musician contributed to Bill suffering from severe anxiety and dissociative episodes. His journey from Adversity to Advantage has fuelled his song writing and allowed him to have a platform to help others who suffer from similar mental health issues. We get real about : The lack of support for young people entering the creative industry Adopting a persona when in a band The need to invest in our mental health before we reach breaking point The pressures of being a young musician The death of Bill’s brother and the effect this had on Bill’s future actions and character The healing power of music Relationships Building resilience Our relationship with technology Levelling techniques Finding Joy The lack of infrastructure for people who need help This is a deep, honest and open conversation about loss, mental health and the lasting effects of trauma. It’s episode 61 of THE TWO SHOT PODCAST and this week we head to MANCHESTER to get our podcast on with the man with no plan, MARC RILEY!!Craig & Producer Griff headed up to the musical capital and we’re welcomed into the very lovely ZIFERBLAT on Edge Street (free tea and cake there you know?) and met Marc to natter away all things Riley. Obviously they spoke about The Fall, MES, rumours, truth, record labels, DJs and how and why he used to be known as “Lard”. You’ll know Marc (depending on your age) as an ex-member of The Fall, a BBC RADIO ONE DJ & one half of MARK & LARD, or, as BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC DJ where Monday to Thursday he hosts his own show and picks his own favourite artists to come and play live in his studio. Alright. Hope you're well. Nice one for getting onto this episode of the podcast. It's episode 54 and it's a beautiful chat with Bill Ryder-Jones. Bill is a musician from down the East Lancs road and if you've not already listened to his stuff then you're missing out. We'd recommend starting with with 'if...' which is an absolute masterpiece of jaw-dropping scale. 'West Kirby County Primary' is absolute class too. And have a look at his new video Mither here -  Basically, listen to it all. It's all boss. Bill is a true artist and a properly fascinating person. He talks with Craig about creativity, mental states, loss, friendship and loads more. It was an absolute privilege to listen in on it and we hope that you get as much from it as we have. If you do, it'll stay with you.We recorded this one in Manchester at the lovely Ziferblat on Edge Street in the Noirthern Quarter (Nice one to Ziferblat for being ace and finding us a room).  Get in touch...
