In this uplifting episode, host Jed Doherty chats with two authors about their powerful new books that celebrate underdogs and shine a light on mental health challenges. First up is James Stafford, the author of "Unbelievable Underdogs and Rebellious Role Models." James shares how his book features 26 captivating stories of sports heroes from around the world who defied the odds and achieved remarkable feats. From the shocking 2015 Rugby World Cup upset by Japan to the inspiring tale of Paralympic athlete Kathleen Thomas, these tales are sure to motivate young readers. James explains how he deliberately structured the book in short, illustrated chapters to engage even the most reluctant readers. He wanted to showcase the universal appeal of underdog stories and how they can inspire us to overcome our own struggles, whether in sports or in life. Next, Jed welcomes KM Selvidge, author of the children's book "Kloe's New Start." KM opens up about her personal connection to the story, which is inspired by growing up with a sibling dealing with mental illness. She discusses the challenges families face and the importance of open communication, support, and believing in yourself. Through the eyes of the main character Kloe, the book explores the stigma, isolation, and self-doubt that can come with having a family member affected by mental health issues. But it also highlights the power of friendship and finding your inner strength. Both authors hope their books will foster important conversations and provide windows into experiences that are often misunderstood. Whether you're a sports fan or looking to better support loved ones, these inspiring stories are a must-read. Today my guest is author and rugby historian James Stafford. A self confessed rugby fanatic, James is the founder of cult rugby website The East Terrace, and has written on rugby for publications such as The Daily Telegraph, Irish Independent, Metro, ESPN Scrum.com, and Rugby World. In 2017 his collection of short comics, The Sorrowful Putto of Prague, was published to critical acclaim in the Czech Republic and James now lives in Prague and coaches with Nyrsko RFC. I wanted to chat with James about his current opinion on the state of rugby worldwide, as well as his catalogue of books, so I hope you are sitting comfortably and happy to stay with us. James Stafford teaches at Columbia University, where he specializes in the political and intellectual history of Ireland, Britain and Western Europe since 1750, with a particular interest in questions of political economy and international order. In this interview he discusses his new book The Case of Ireland: Commerce, Empire and the European Order, 1750-1848 (Cambridge UP, 2022), which offers a fresh account of Ireland's place in European debates about commerce and empire during a global era of war and revolution. The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries have long been seen as a foundational period for modern Irish political traditions such as nationalism, republicanism and unionism. The Case of Ireland offers a fresh account of Ireland's neglected role in European debates about commerce and empire in what was a global era of war and revolution. Drawing on a broad range of writings from merchants, agrarian improvers, philosophers, politicians and revolutionaries across Europe, this book shows how Ireland became a field of conflict and projection between rival visions of politics in commercial society, associated with the warring empires of Britain and France. It offers a new perspective on the crisis and transformation of the British Empire at the end of the eighteenth century, and restores Ireland to its rightful place at the centre of European intellectual history. Season 1 Episode 8 - Sheila the Tiny Turtle - Book and Lyrics by Caitlyn Burt, Music by Amir Shoenfeld. In the Australian desert, a family of turtles works hard to find food for their sick mother. Sheila, the cleverest - yet smallest - turtle of the family, is mocked by her brothers for not being able to contribute due to her size. When Sheila hears about a cure located dangerously far across the desert, she determines to bring the seeds back to save her mum. While crossing the sand, Sheila encounters a kangaroo, followed by a dingo, where she is forced to use her brain instead of her size to overcome the obstacles and make her mum well.Starring: Karli Dinardo, Lauren Elder, James Stafford, Robert Manion, Heather Makalani, and Michael Perrie Jr.with Direction by Christopher Michaels,Music Direction by Jonathon Lynch,Orchestrations and Sound Design by Andrew Fox,and Mixing and Mastering by Jay Rosen.Assistant Audio Engineering by Evan Feist.Additional Orchestrations by Ben Plotnick and Kaitlyn Raitz of Oliver the Crow.Fiddle, Guitar, and Mandolin performed by Ben Plotnick, and Cello by Kaitlyn Raitz.General Management: Jeremy TerryPress Representative: Off Off PRIndieWorks Social Media Manager: Emily CottoneBite-Sized Broadway is an IndieWorks Theatre and Judith Manocherian Production created by Jonathon Lynch. James Stafford has a strong interest in how information guides movement. Questions like how can we judge a gap between cars when crossing a road and how does a cricketer successfully intercept a ball travelling at 90 mph led him to working with Professor Cathy Craig on a PhD at the Movement Innovation Lab at Queen's University Belfast. James wrote a fascinating thread on Twitter about the Australian cricketer, Steve Smith and the way he has developed a method of batting that is explained through ecological principles. https://twitter.com/JamesStafford94/status/1169619675656916992?s=20 that is well worth a read. We discuss this in this episode as well as a range of sports including the fascinating work he is doing using VR to develop goalkeeping ability by improving a goalkeeper's ability to perceive ball flights.
