Pressure is mounting on Clare County Council to stay on top of the maintenance of a prominent footpath in the east of the county. Following criticism of the local authority for "neglecting" the hedges along the Tuamgraney to Killaloe road last summer, it's been confirmed maintenance works will take place this year between June 24th and July 5th inclusive. The operation will involve minor drainage works and trimming of existing hedges along the route. Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke has welcomed the announcement of the works but claims the council "failed" to maintain the footpath last year at the expense of tourism.

The Broomway has been dubbed the “deadliest footpath in Britain”, claiming more than a hundred lives. Helen Mark takes a cautious walk along this treacherous Essex seapath with Peter Carr and John Burroughs from the Foulness Island Heritage Centre. Helen will also be joined by Thea Behrman, the director of the Estuary Festival, to reflect on how this meeting point of land and sea can provide creative inspiration through its bleak beauty. Muddled, costly and unnecessary regulatory burdens - that's the Food and Drink Federation's description of new labelling rules which it says will cost food companies million of pounds. From October dairy and meat products for sale in Great Britain will have to have 'not for EU' on the packaging. Just as products on sale in Northern Ireland have had since last year. The Government says the aim is to make sure that Northern Irish consumers have access to the same goods, as with the same labels there isn't an incentive for companies not to sell in Northern Ireland. The FDF says that's unnecessary. We hear from the boss of a dairy company who says it will cost them at least £300,000.Succession is something we talk about a lot on Farming Today - for farming families where no one wants to take over the business, share farming can be a solution. We visit a couple who have set up a share farming deal with one young farmer to see how it works. And 30 million pounds is needed to improve mountain paths in Scotland - that's on top of the five million already spent on 140km of trails in the two National Parks. The government agency Nature Scot says paths in the uplands need work. But what's in it for land owners and managers?Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons
Funding is being sought for a footpath upgrade near an East Clare school where "serious" safety concerns have been flagged. Killaloe Municipal District applied for 2024 Active Travel Funding to connect Scariff National School to the local rugby grounds by way of a footpath but this application has proved unsuccessful. The local body has confirmed however that it's engaged with local stakeholders on the plans and it's seeking an "alternative funding mechanism" as a means of delivering the upgrade works. Mayor of Clare and Bodyke Fine Gael Councillor Joe Cooney, who called for an update on the works at this month's meeting of East Clare representatives which took place this week, believes funding will be sourced for the all-important project.
New Zealand Post plans to lay off 700 postal staff in the next five years, in favour of using contractors in vans. Postal Workers Union Co-National President John Maynard tells Mike Hosking contractors don't have the same employment rights and employers will use contractors to avoid paying benefits such as annual holidays. The union believes a suitable alternative to the cuts is to maintain postal delivery on footpaths with smaller numbers. The union believe this plan is a more efficient proposition to continue delivering letters than what NZ Post are currently planning. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To grow a seed must be planted On Tour with Jesus Jesus is on a tour of the nearby town and villages Preaching the good news with his 12 disciples Some healed women with him on the journey They had been healed of demonic and diseases They were using their own resources The Farmer Did His Job He gives this parable about a farmer scattering seed The seed fell on 4 types of soil Footpath-stepped on and eaten by birds Rocks-wilted and died from lack of moisture ( you have go to be watered by the Word) Thorny-grew and choked Fertile-produced a crop hundredfold They all grew but all were affected by the circumstances surrounding them Which soil are you in? He uses parables fulfilled with scriptures He explains the meaning The Footpath- hear the message, only to have the devil snatch and prevent them from believing and being saved Rocky- hear, receive with joy, don't have roots so they believe for only a little while fall away from face temptation Thorny-hear the message but quickly gets crowded out by the cares, riches, and pleasures of this life, never matures Fertile-honest good-hearted people who hear the word and cling to it and patiently produce a harvest Shine your light and Listen No one hides lamps around their house It's on a stand display Where are your lamps? How is it shining? Our witness is public. What secret will be brought out in the open Everything concealed will be revealed Therefore consider how you hear. Listen and get more understanding Don't listen and what you understand will be taken away from you Hear the Word and obey it Jesus mother and brothers came to see him and they couldn't get to hi So they sent the word to your family outside Jesus responds my mother and brothers are those who hear the Word and obey it Are you in Jesus' Family? Where is your faith? Jesus said Let's go to the other side of the lake They get in the boat Jesus takes a nap They failed to realize Jesus said they were going to get to the other side Fierce storm, boat filling up, they were in danger They woke him up shouting we are going to drown Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind and the waves, all is calm He asked them Where is your faith? Their eyes were on the storm and not the Savior They were terrified and amazed Who is this man? The wind and waves obey him They have seen his authority over the death, the sick, and now the creation and they still asking who is this man We must see Jesus for who he is. The ACT Government is finally going to start issuing fines for mobile phone offences detected by cameras - well, on 20 February. Why did it take so long? Why were there so many trial periods? Because Canberrans couldn't keep their hands off their phones (not us, of course, we never do wrong, and we know you're awesome, too). And finally ... the biggest news of the week. Barnaby Joyce. Barnaby Joyce has admitted to making 'a mistake', after a compromising video of him on a Canberra street surfaced. In the video, Joyce had fallen on the ground off a planter box and was swearing into his phone after a long parliamentary sitting day. The former deputy prime minister has blamed the mix of alcohol and prescription medication for his actions last Friday. Australian correspondent Oliver Peterson says several people have spoken up to defend Joyce after the incident. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Parking on the footpath is illegal anywhere in New Zealand, but councils across the country are taking different approaches to enforcing the rules. On many narrow streets in Auckland's inner city, people park their cars with two wheels on the footpath to let traffic past. While some residents say it's just part of living in a city, for the disability community, it can cause accessibility problems. Our reporter Tom Taylor and camera operator Nick Monro went to find out what people make of the issue.

It follows concerns raised from local representatives at the large volume of people walking and cycling on the road in the area, particularly since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Mark Valites ran the across New York State a few months ago. He set the first known Supported FKT (Fastest Known Time) running East to West on the NY Finger Lakes Trail. It's 584 miles… ish. Who's counting? And two of the main people that were along for the ride (and let's face it, driving the bus) were John Ghidiu and Christy Post. We recount the highs and lows and lows of Mark's trip on this "hidden gem" of a trail. Christy, in addition to being an excellent runner (think, Muddy Sneaker, Mendon Trail 50 K, Many on The Genny, Breakneck Point, Twisted Branch), is also the recently minted Director of Marketing for the FLTC, Finger Lakes Trail Conference, the organization that does so much to ensure the Finger lakes Trail exists… and is really amping up their game to help everyone learn about this awesome trail that crosses the near entirety of New York. Super excited for a lot of what Christy is working on. John is … well… you'll find out. John does a lot of things and the intros are already long enough. I'm not trying to sell him short. He just uses different words than I would use. So you should hear his. Anyway, in this episode, we're going to talk about Mark's FKT and some surprising outcomes from said adventure. Special Guests: Christy Post, John Ghidiu, and Mark Valites.
