Send us a Text Message. When Jonnie Wilkes and former Lost and Sound guest JD Twitch began their Optimo Espacio night one sunday in 1997 at Glasgow's Sub Club, did they think that their eclectic style of mixing house and techno with post-punk, krautrock and far outt exotic treats would kickstart an institution, as well as carve the way for a dancefloor seachange? On this week's show, Jonnie takes the mic to share his auditory odyssey with us. The narrative weaves between his distinct loves for both DJing and music production, and how this ties into a background in fine art. With over two decades of experience to his name, Jonnie offers profound insights into how his artistry has shaped and been shaped by the reverberations of the industry. This echoes into talking about jis recently released Naum Gabo album (made with James Savage and released on the hugely influential DFA Records) is a dark, post-industrial journey that explores the outer reaches of electronics.Wilkes' candid reminiscences and musings on the emotional tapestry of live performances cast light on the intimate connections forged between DJ and audience, how our physical surroundings influence our creative process and the fluidity of art.F.Lux by Naum Gabo is available now here.Paul Hanford on InstagramLost and Sound is proudly sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is published by Velocity Press. Last year, South Korea's Extra Noir asked “What links a mall Santa in Singapore with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak? Scottish bard Robert Burns and Tales from the Crypt? What connects a cry for love in the industrial heart of Seoul with Algernon Blackwood spiking a batch of eggnog?” The answer, of course, was their Christmas charity compilation, Noël Noir. This holiday season, the label has combined some of the best selections from that release with new contributions for a limited-edition cassette. The year's hottest stocking stuffer contains wintry atmospherics and seasonal spooks from JD Twitch's ambient alias Tomorrow The Rain Will Fall Upwards, Salamanda, Xander Harris, Jaeho Hwang, Heejin Jang and more. No other DJ epitomises the love of music as music in quite the same way as this week's guest. JD Twitch aka Keith McIvor began the legendary club night (and more recently label) Optimo (Espacio) in Glasgow '97 with Johnny Wilkes to play the kind of music that they never heard out. Now, recently having celebrated their 25th Anniversary, JD has a bouncy chat with Paul about his free and joyful approaches to selecting music, which often hit a unique sweet spot between cratedigging and classics. This episode is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. Glasgow's @fergus_clark has a depth of musical knowledge way beyond his years. He is one-quarter of the 12th Isle label, party and radio collective and digs deep into everything from early techno to musique concrete to obscure exotica. Back in 2017 he released a still essential tape on Tasker's 88T label and a thrilling compilation with JD Twitch, Miracle Steps (Music from the 4th World). Both of these releases are indicative of how Clark puts together music with a sense of storytelling, scene-setting and endless mysticism. This week's mix sure does give you a sense of exploration, of journeying through new worlds somewhere in the global south. The music is humid and wet, with tribal vocal chants and digital synths paired with indigenous instrumentation. As you get deeper into the aural jungle, the drums get bigger, proto-house rhythms make you move and you end up at a steamy tropical rave. It is another accomplished and subversive mix from this ever more renowned DJ.
Serendipity is a wonderful thing, and when we looked ahead in the guestmix calendar, a certain number jumped out. 303. A number synonymous with the roots of house music, which presented itself with a (somewhat obvious) opportunity to get an old friend into the series... a man who saw it all unfold before his very eyes in the 90's, and who himself excels with the execution of mixes with an underlying concept. Welcome to JD Twitch's ode to the Roland 303. "The Roland 303 is a little silver box of electronics that accidentally produced the squelching sound that became the foundation of Acid House. Pioneered circa 1987 in Chicago, Acid House exploded around the world and that sound spread through electronic music creating myriad variants. Fundamentally the 303 is instantly recognisable by its squelch sound. This squelch can be euphoric, hypnotic, joyous, uplifting, sad, dark, cheesy, silly, scary, ridiculous, psychedelic, beautiful and anthemic. This mix aims to showcase many of these shades of the squelch. It is not the greatest hits of the 303, nor is it a collection of wilfully obscure forgotten 303 jams, it's just simply a paean to the majesty and never ending sonic possibilities of the squelch. Viva Acid!" Artist: @twitch
First Night Light Radio episode of 2021! What a week it's been...excited for the Senate win in Georgia, and not excited about a lot of other political stuff, to say the least. This week enjoy so much new music and some classics and remixes on the theme of People Power. These artists say it all. This episode starts more upbeat and cruises out in the end. I hope you enjoy. Optimo are the duo JD Twitch and JG Wilkes. They each have over 20 years of DJ-ing experience and have become renowned and respected for their memorable and ecstatic sets. In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience.Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. I will be your slightly odd, slightly off-centre, guide. But ultimately and most importantly, your friendly on-line record shop assistant. 01. Eli Escobar - Ode To America [Classic Music Company]02. Holer 4 rampages through a bunch of new finds for us, dipping deep into things like Seekers International, ravey Peder Mannerfelt bits and a square wave grime assault. There’s carnival heat from DJ Die via his Gutterfunk label, bursts of UK Funky into some banging big drum Belgian techno numbers like Capricorn’s 20Hz. We jump on the riddim bus for a Sleng Teng excursion and stop off with versions from Screechie Nice to JD Twitch among others. Elsewhere, the mighty Tenor Fly (who died the summer just gone) squares off with Starkey Banton on the merits and sins of jungle music. Set those lazers to bashment rave! And Ciaran finally gets to unload a rake of footwork with some Zed Bias and DJ Rashad joints. But not before pulling together a little segment devoted to Mark Fisher who passed some weeks ago. It’s got couple of his favorite tracks from a time when we could still imagine a future and drops a really salient speech from the man himself. On this month's show, we tackle the complicated question of how to open a DJ set.
On this month's show, we tackle the complicated question of how to open a DJ set.
And so we come to our 100th episode. We have been lucky enough to have showcased some incredible mixes since we started; it's truly been a pleasure to feature established guests as well as giving a platform to lesser known names. For this milestone mix we always had a particular guest in mind and we're more than honoured they agreed to be a part of the series. Optimo's musical ethos bleeds into the way we approach all our musical endeavours, be it a club night, DJ set, the label or indeed a mix series. We often find ourselves difficult to explain musically, which in this day & age of everything having to sit in its own box can on occasion be a source of frustration. But then when you look at Optimo who constantly and succesfully champion just great music who cares about genres. It's a mantra that's hopefully mirrored across our mix series. This year Keith and Jonnie enter their 20th year with Optimo; more relevant than ever with their exciting, eclectic DJ performances around the globe. Keith's two labels Optimo Music and Optimo Trax are garnered to shining a light on new and unusual music both for the club and beyond. Thanks to Keith for putting this edition together and thanks to you , dear listener for being on the journey with us. Much love, Clandestino x https://soundcloud.com/twitch https://soundcloud.com/optimo-music
Thomas Lea Clarke is DJ and producer out of Glasgow where he’s been turning heads internationally with his own brand of raw and fearless analogue dance music as MR TC. His first two EP’s ’Soundtrack for Strangers’ and ’Surf and Destroy’ found a home on JD Twitch’s Optimo Music imprint with further edits and remixes on Huntley’s and Palmers, La Belle and Rotten City Records. His sound is one that mixes organic elements with electronic instrumentation: guitar and live percussion meeting drum machines and synths, soaked in space echo and spring reverb. https://soundcloud.com/mr_tc_glasgow
JD Twitch is a true musical magpie. Over his long and storied career the Scot has been responsible for seminal Glasgow party Optimo alongside Jonnie Wilkes, has put out post punk compilations, done trance mixes, run various different labels (from Autonomous Africa to Optimo Music) and is a famously skilled and eclectic DJ who has headlined all over the world. He has done a fabric CD and a compilation for R&S, produces with Dave Clark as Optimo (Espacio) as well as solo under a wide range of aliases. As such he is a veritable mine of musical knowledge and a real pillar of the underground scene. For his Dekmantel podcast he has delivered us something, as you would expect, rather special. “It's a mix of all Dutch dance tracks from the very early 90s,” he says. “It features a handful of well known classics but lots of forgotten gems and these were all records I played incessantly in very sweaty raves at that time, so a few of the records are a little scratchy, dusty, worn down. I wanted to do this mix as I was mad about Dutch records back then and I think Holland produced so much amazing music during this period and had a very distinctive, unique sound and perhaps a lot of people today don't know it was one of the pioneering nations of house and techno. The club I did back then, Pure, brought over a lot of dutch artists to play in the early 90s - Dimitri (many, many times), Eddie de de Clercq, Marcello, Random XS, Terrace, Miss Djax, Unit Moebius, Orlando Voorn, Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia and Acid Junkies to name a few. Lastly, I think the records from back then still sound great today!” Tune in and you will surely agree.
