Encouraging a Cultural Shift in FDC

Welcome back to the Big Hearted Podcast! This week, we're diving into something I feel really passionate about—encouraging a cultural shift in family day care. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the answer to burnout in FDC is slow pedagogy. When we slow down, tune into the children, and create mindful, intentional environments, everything changes. The children thrive, we thrive, and we stop feeling like we're constantly running on empty. In this episode, I break down: Why slow pedagogy is the key to reducing burnout The four pillars of a successful FDC business—and why they all need attention How to set boundaries with families (because you are not their emotional dumping ground!) The importance of mindful planning so you can actually enjoy your work Why you should never feel guilty for making a profit in FDC If you're feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or just need a reminder that you deserve to love your work, this episode is for you. 5 Ways to Shift the Culture in FDC Be present. Put down the to-do list, stop rushing, and actually observe the children in front of you. Hold firm boundaries. Your role is to care for the children—not provide free counselling for parents. Declutter your space. Too much “stuff” = overstimulation for children and stress for you. Less is more. Get your business in order. Financial stress will pull your energy away from the children—stay on top of it. Trust yourself. You know what the children need. You are a professional. Act like it. A Quote From This Episode "You are not profiting off the children. Let me be really clear about that. You are profiting off the hard work that you've done. The parents are paying you for the time freedom for themselves to be able to go and earn their income. You are not profiting off the children. You are not out there selling the children's artwork or, um, selling them to go and dig holes in someone's garden, like, you are not profiting off the children. You are profiting off the hard work that you put in." Social Media Quote "The best thing we can do for children in FDC? Slow. Down. When we move with intention, we see more, we connect deeper, and we stop feeling exhausted all the time." Beyond the Rush: Embracing Slow Pedagogy for Educators and Children

Beyond the Rush – Embracing Slow Pedagogy for Educators and Children Hello, hello, and welcome back to the Big Hearted Podcast! This week's episode comes off the back of an email from Miss Jodie, who loved last week's episode so much that she's listened to it four times already! She's also super keen for the Helicopter to Hands-Off workshop happening in March, so I thought—let's dig a little deeper into this idea of slow pedagogy. I'll be honest, I had no idea what slow pedagogy was when I first started Big Hearted Education in 2020. But once I found the words for it, I realised that everything I've been teaching and practicing as an educator has been leading to this. It's all about slowing down, being present, and taking a purposeful, intentional approach to how we run our family day care services. In this episode, I'm sharing my own experiences from running an FDC while being an approved provider, coordinator, and educational leader—all at the same time (yep, ninja-level time management required!). I talk about how I had to shift my mindset, step away from the rush, and create a rhythm in my day that worked for both me and the children. Because here's the thing—when you're stressed, the children feel it. And they'll respond to the energy you bring into the space. So, let's talk about how to break free from the rush, ditch the overwhelm, and embrace a way of working that actually feels good. What You'll Hear in This Episode: How slow pedagogy helps educators feel less overwhelmed and more connected Why routines aren't the answer—but rhythm and flow are The biggest mistake educators make when trying to be "hands-off" How to set up your day for success (so you're not scrambling to get things done) What it actually means to step back and let children lead 5 Ways to Slow Down in Your FDC Ditch rigid routines – Swap them out for an ebb and flow approach that follows the children's natural rhythms. Revisit experiences – There's nothing wrong with spending six weeks on painting and exploring it in different ways! Step back from the play – Give children space to figure things out on their own before stepping in. Be prepared behind the scenes – A well-run day isn't about micromanaging; it's about having things ready before they're needed. Trust that less is more – You don't need to cram your day with activities to prove you're doing a great job. Deep, meaningful engagement beats quantity every time. A Quote from This Episode: "When you are professionally holding yourself accountable as a family daycare professional, you start to put different meaning on the work that you're doing. And it becomes far more professionally fulfilling for you. When you have purpose and you understand why you're doing what you do. So that's a really positive benefit for educators because when things are slowed down enough, it gives you space to actually ponder and ask questions of yourself around what's actually happening." Social Media Quote: "We rush children too much. There's nothing wrong with spending six weeks on painting, exploring different tools, techniques, and textures. Learning deepens when we revisit, reflect, and build on experiences over time." #SlowPedagogy Links & Resources Mentioned: Dream Lead Play Conference (Early Bird Tickets Until 31st Jan) → Get Your Tickets Here 90-Day Autumn Planning Session (15th Feb) → https://bigheartededucation.com/autumn-planning-2025 Helicopter to Hands-Off Workshop (3rd March) → Book Now Essential Elements Course (12-Month Blueprint for FDC Educators) → Join The Waitlist

In 2023, he received the Leadership award for Citizenship from the Specialty Food Association.  In this episode…  In a business environment dominated by duplicate products, brands must employ creative measures to stand out and capture consumers' attention. This requires more than having a widespread presence on popular social media apps. How did a community-focused coffee brand gain recognition in thousands of Walmart locations? Former firefighter and US Navy veteran Luke Schneider credits his coffee company's growth to a robust community presence and a resonant mission. He emphasizes building a local community to convey your mission and cultivate a brand identity. For a broader reach, you can communicate your message on various social media platforms by targeting audiences who align with your mission to differentiate your products in the market. Luke maintains that a motivated team and influential culture can promote your community efforts and amplify your mission.  In today's episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris chats with Luke Schneider, the Founder and CEO of Fire Dept. Coffee (FDC), about building a robust community and team to scale. Luke discusses social selling, FDC's subscription offers, and how the company received its first publicity and navigated a trademark lawsuit.

Our guest on this episode of “5-Alarm Task Force!” is an engineer who designs water-flow systems, from the FDC outside to the sprinklers inside the facility. On this episode, E.J. stresses the issue that it is incumbent upon us, whether we serve a career, volunteer, part-pay, or paid-on-call, that we know our districts and what is being built in these districts. "Calling BS on 'Taking the Family Out of Family Day Care" Welcome back to the Big Hearted Podcast! In this episode, I tackle a common statement circulating within the family day care community: “They're taking the family out of family day care.” I'm here to call BS on that. Together, let's explore why educators have far more autonomy and power over their business than they might think, and how we can reshape the narrative around family day care. In This Episode: Challenging the Narrative: I dive into the reasons why I believe the statement “they're taking the family out of family day care” doesn't hold up. We explore how much control you really have as an FDC educator, even within the frameworks of regulations and service policies. You're in Control: I talk about the autonomy you have in creating your environment, structuring your program, and designing the day to reflect your values and meet the needs of your families. From the colours on your walls to how you run your routines, you're the one in charge. Aligning with the Right Service: It's all about finding a service provider that aligns with your approach and values. I explain why it's important to collaborate with a service that supports your vision and how to manage regulations without compromising on your style. Creative Solutions to Common Challenges: Whether it's meeting regulatory requirements or handling things like excursions and sleep checks, I show how you can work within frameworks but still bring your unique approach to the table. It's about being innovative and flexible in your practice. Balancing Family Life and Wellbeing: I explore how you can find balance between running your family day care business and managing the demands of your personal life. You get to tailor your schedule and approach in a way that supports your wellbeing and honours your family's needs. Key Quotes: “You have the autonomy to make decisions that reflect your values – they aren't taking the family out of family day care.” “It's not about the regulations; it's about how you choose to respond to them. That's where your power lies.” Resources Mentioned: Essential Elements Membership Hub: Join the waitlist for the upcoming Essential Elements membership hub, launching on 14th October. The Central government, a few days ago, banned 156 fixed dose combination drugs, or FDCs. An FDC is a drug that has more than one active ingredient – two or more drugs together, in a single pill, capsule or shot. This is the latest in a series of bans brought in by the Centre – last year 14 FDCs were banned, and a total of 499 have been banned since 2014.  Why is this happening? Expert committees of the government have said these FDCs are irrational or have no therapeutic value for patients. In fact, FDCs are known to contribute to a growing public health problem in India – antimicrobial resistance So then why is the Indian market dominated by FDCs? Why are there FDCs in India that are not found anywhere else in the world? How are even unapproved and banned FDCs often found in the market? Welcome back to CNBC-TV18's Marketbuzz Podcast. Here are all the latest developments from around the world ahead of the trading session of August 26 -The key crucial remark from the weekend is from US Fed Chair Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech. He said that the time has come for policy to adjust. The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, evolving outlook and the balance of risks. This is exactly what the street wished to hear. -While the reaction in the Indian markets will be seen on Monday, Powell's speech was definitely cheered by Wall Street. The Dow Jones rallied over 450 points, as did the S&P 500. The Nasdaq composite surged over 1.5%. All three benchmark indices ended the week with gains. -Back home, this week will see the expiry of the August F&O series for the Nifty and Nifty Bank. The Nifty has been volatile this series but as of closing on Friday, the index is absolutely flat, just 10 points adrift of the July expiry close of 24,834. For the week gone by, both Nifty and the Nifty Bank ended with gains of a percent each. -The latest round of the Nifty 50 rejig was also announced on Friday. Trent, the Tata Group multibagger, which is up 20 times from its Covid-19 lows, will be the latest entrant to the index, along with state-run Bharat Electronics. Both these names will replace Divi's Laboratories and LTIMindtree, which will be moved back to the Nifty Next 50 or the Nifty Junior index. -In addition to the Nifty Rejig, announcements were also made for the latest addition to the FTSE All World Index. They include names like Bank of Maharashtra, Bharat Dynamics, Central Bank of India, Cochin Shipyard, Endurance Tech, Escorts Kubota, GE T&D India, Hitachi Energy India, HUDCO, IRB Infra, KEI Industries, Lloyds Metals, Motilal Oswal. Changes to be effective from September 23, 2024. -Stocks to watch: Ambuja Cements, Transport Corporation of India, Alembic pharma, Prime Fresh, Karur Vysya Bank, Lemon Tree, FDC, Religare Enterprises, JSW Energy, and Zydus Life. -On the global front, Asian stocks advanced this morning and the yen strengthened to a three-week high as investors took positions in anticipation of the Federal Reserve cutting US interest rates from next month. Shares in Australia and Hong Kong climbed on Monday, benefitting from Chair Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech, when he said the “time has come” to pivot to monetary easing. -GIFTYNifty was higher this morning trading at a premium of nearly 60 pts from Nifty Futures Friday close, indicating a start in the green for the Indian market Tune in to the Marketbuzz Podcast for more news and cues

In this conversation, Carly welcomes Dr. Jessica Hekman, the creator of The Functional Dog Collaborative, to the podcast.   The FDC was founded to support the breeding and raising of purebred, outcrossed, and mixed-breed dogs while prioritizing the physical and behavioral health. The FDC considers these functional goals more important than strict breed standard or closed studbook.Topics covered:The Functional Dog Collaborative (FDC) and it's aim to support responsible breeding practices and improve genetics and socialization in dogs. Functional breeding means breeding dogs that are physically and behaviorally healthy and resilient.Common genetic problems in dog breeds can be seen in extreme morphologies, (like brachycephalic faces) or traits that were not intentionally bred for (like epilepsy and shortened lifespans).Different approaches to breeding like outcrossing and creating new breeds, can address health issues. The current dog culture faces challenges in accepting new breeding practices and changing ideologies.Education and resources are needed to guide puppy seekers in finding responsible breeders. How the Functional Dog Collaborative aims to change the incentive structure in dog breeding through initiatives like the Data Canis platform. GUEST INFOfunctionalbreeding.orgFDC FacebookFDC InstagramFDC TikTokFDC Podcast FOLLOW WITH A DOG:InstagramTikTokSupport the showSupport the show

President of CNAP, Alain Reuter, talks to us about how to obtain a pension in Luxembourg. Sasha discusses the week's news, and I wish you all a Happy St. Patrick's Day! Pensions are one of those parts of life-long planning which, due to the nature of our busy days, we don't always have time to think about or organise. Now if you happen to spend your entire working life in Luxembourg, and you're an employee (rather than an independent worker), again you have to think a little less about such issues. However, a lot of my audience is international with some time spent in Luxembourg, some coming, going and even returning. Again, a lot of these people will come with a partner who may not be working. And so the questions begin. What does one need to do to contribute to a 'pot' where, one day, they may be entitled to a Luxembourg pension? How do you add educational years (yes, that's a thing here)? How do you add child-rearing years? Alain Reuter and his team get such questions every day. Alain is President of the National Pension Insurance Office (Caisse nationale d'assurance pension - CNAP) and the Compensation Fund of the General Pension Scheme (Fonds de compensation commun au régime général de pension - FDC) since December 2020. At the moment, about 215,000 are retired (and receiving a pension) in Luxembourg, out of a population of about 650,000. This number has risen by 15% in the last five years. The total amount paid out is about 5.7 billion euros. Of this amount, about 4 billion euros is to people in Luxembourg and 1.7 billion to those now living abroad (in 111 different countries to be precise). The average age of retirement, currently, is 60.1. Pensions have been in the news for various reasons over the last few months. The most pertinent and, in my opinion, important reason is that there is not going to be enough money in the system to pay for future pensions. In fact, by 2042, the pension fund's reserves will be insufficient to cover expenditure. Ivaylo Markov, Managing Partner of Thales Capital puts it like this: "From 2027 we will be spending more than we earn, which will reduce the reserves, which will be depleted in barely 15 years... The current decade will see the number of beneficiaries grow by around 4% each year. This increase is explained by the IGSS as being due to a 'wave of new pensioners, mainly made up of immigrant and cross-border workers recruited from the 1990s onwards" This is a topic that needs further investigation and I will try to do a follow-up show with your questions. Please send any thoughts to contenttoday@rtl.lu with the title 'Pensions - questions for Lisa Burke' Enjoy the show and have a wonderful St. Patrick's Day celebratory weekend!

This episode, Ji Khalsa is interviewing me, Jessica Hekman, DVM, PhD. I'm a veterinarian turned behavioral geneticist turned teacher and founder of the Functional Dog Collaborative, or FDC. I graduated from Tufts Veterinary School in 2012 with a dual veterinary and master's degree, which was on stress in hospitalized dogs. I completed a veterinary shelter medicine specialty internship at Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida. I completed a PhD in Genetics, Genomics, and Biomedical Sciences in Kukekova Lab at the University of Illinois, studying genetic differences in the stress system in lines of foxes bred to be less afraid of humans compared to foxes bred to be aggressive. I did post-doctoral work at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and now teach online for Virginia Tech and run the FDC. Ji asked me to talk about the FDC - how it's coming, what we're doing, what we need help with. So here it is!

Overwhelmed by the process of filing a Fully Developed VA Claim? The VA Claim Process is complicated. We get it. Today, VA Claims Insider is going to share with you some secrets of the VA rating system, including the benefits of a Fully Developed VA Claim. Let's face it. Most Veterans have no idea how to claim the compensation they deserve after discharge from the Military. When they do apply for disability, there's the obstacle of just filing a simple claim. An FDC claim is determined appropriate for the following: – Service connection (SC) initial – Increased evaluation – A claim for Permanent and Total (P&T) rating The form accepted by the VA for an FDC claim is VBA-21-526ez. Checking the box “Fully Developed VA Claim” indicates what type of claim you are filing. Unfortunately, there is no “exact” timeline when it comes to FDC claims. However, we have seen these claims come back in a week. Stay the course, and remember the more pertinent information you can deliver the easier it makes the VA rater's life. This is the second part of my epic interview with Mary Peaslee about hip testing. As I said in part one, I highly value Mary's insights about hip testing for a whole bunch of reasons. She's a medical doctor with an additional master's in public health, specializing in preventive medicine, so she has extensive training in understanding screening tests just like the kinds of tests we do for hip health. As for her dog cred, she has been breeding English Shepherds for over 20 years, with a focus on growing and sustaining a healthy breed population. She's been very involved in the breed, earning herding trial championships, and serving on the the board of directors for the English Shepherd Breed Conservancy, English Shepherd Club, and the American Herding Breed Association. Mary has volunteered for FDC for several years and we've had many discussions about health testing and breeding. We've talked a lot recently about hip testing and I asked her to come onto the podcast to tell us her thoughts. If you haven't listened to part one yet, I recommend you check that one out first!
