How are you balancing your attention to the callings God has given you? In this episode, Jeff and Jenny discuss: Finding what lights you up and lets you serve others.Serving your children to serve others.Scaling and growth with a seasonal product.Empowering mothers to help their families.   Key Takeaways: Everyone has different paths in life. Parenthood is not a death sentence to your entrepreneurial or mission dreams. Inviting babysitters into your family intentionally can help you disciple your children and help you serve your mission. Be on the same page with your spouse about stewarding in your family. Your family is not an obstacle or an anchor holding you back. But don't let your dreams hold you back from building your family.   "The balance that we're going to experience as women, between our business and our family, is not a problem to be solved, it's attention to be managed." —  Jenny Watson  About Jenny Watson: As the owner of The Elderberry Co., Jenny is a devoted wife and mother to three children. Her entrepreneurial journey began in 2017, launching her small business from her home kitchen. Jenny and Cooper (he refuses to identify as a lesbian, but Jenny does)Jenny Watson runs weekly lesbian speed dating evenings in a London pub. Or at least she did, until trans activists complained to the management about – you guessed it – men being excluded, lipstick not withstanding. Following a number of incidents involving trans-identified males claiming to be lesbians attending her events, Jenny was compelled to remind would-be participants that ‘lesbians don't have penises'. She even stated, ‘If you are male, please refrain from coming' on the basis that the evening was for the ‘protection of sex-segregated spaces for lesbian women'. According to Jenny, one trans identified man pushed himself against a lesbian in the toilets, and another, clad in purple lycra, was sporting a visible erection. The pub in Bloomsbury received a number of complaints about her comments, and as per usual, the venue chose to launch an ‘inquiry', rather than support one of the city's few lesbian social events. Jenny's forthcoming event (if the venue doesn't cancel - I will keep you posted) This is a public episode. Welcome to Season 2 Welcome to Season 2 of the SO SHE DID Podcast. This is Kristin, and while most podcasters call themselves hosts, during this seasons I'd rather just be a passenger on a journey of learning and growing toward excellence with you. This season, I will be interviewing guests from a variety of backgrounds and locations around the world. We have a wide-range of guests, including a former playboy model and covergirl turned coach, authors, business experts, health coaches, entrepreneurs, immigrants and world travelers.  When we hear the stories and listen to the wisdom of many, we too can become better versions of ourselves. Paul Kennedy left behind the busy New York City life to travel in search of Inspiration. What he found was that he was most inspired by the people he encountered. He will join us from Vietnam to discuss his soon-to-be released cookbook: Vietnam Food & Culture: To appreciate the culture, you must understand the food. To appreciate the food, you must understand the culture. Jenny Watson, Owner and CEO of the Elderberry company will share how her passion for keeping her family healthy at home in Indiana resulted in a successful business but challenged her to learn to find work-life balance. Katie Feltmate, poet and author, will be joining our journey to talk about the importance of using our voice for change. Katie is a gender-based violence advocate living in Nova Scotia, and her book — Love in the Age of Quarantine— chronicles her experiences as a victim of domestic violence recovering during a time when social isolation became the norm. Erin Gregor, serial entrepreneur from Texas and co-founder of Innovation Media Enterprises, will share her journey not only through business, but also through the ups and downs of self-doubt, overcoming imposter syndrome and learning to be brave enough to put yourself out there. Helene Brolund from Copenhagen, Denmark recognizes that as adults with busy lives it is often difficult to find and maintain friendships. She has made it her mission to help adults build authentic friendships, develop deeper connections and provide support along the way. My hope is that you will enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording and that from each of the guests this season you will learn something that will change your life for the better. Popism, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 1982 Lecture by Judy Annear The exhibition POPISM was held at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1982. At 24 years old, recent honours graduate and founder and editor of Art & Text magazine, Paul Taylor was invited to curate an exhibition of contemporary Australian art. The NGV was usually described as ‘the bunker’ with apparently little connection to the local art scene or experimental practice. POPISM came like a bolt from the blue, hard on the heels of the first five issues of Art &Text. This lecture will discuss the exhibition and the artists (Howard Arkley, David Chesworth, Ian Cox, Juan Davila, Richard Dunn, Paul Fletcher, Maria Kozic, Robert Rooney, Jane Stevenson, The Society for Other Photography, Imants Tillers, Peter Tyndall, Jenny Watson, and Tsk Tsk Tsk), provide some background and context to the ideas and practices, and the evolution of Taylor’s thinking and working. I will trace this through Taylor’s published writings, the various reactions to his activities, and the recollections and interpretations of his peers – then and now. When Anna Davis discusses being a curator, she talks about collaboration, conversation and experimentation: “It's about working with artists and working with ideas.” It's also about the relationships: “The exhibition really starts to take shape in a real sense once the artists are really talking. I think when you get the chance to work with someone like Jenny Watson or Louise Hearman and it's over a number of years, which is fantastic, you get to develop this relationship with them and hopefully a level of trust comes through that.” Having held the position of Curator at Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) for the past decade, Davis has curated a vast array of contemporary exhibitions, which she discusses in the first episode of Art Guide's four-part series ‘Conversations with Curators'. Anna discusses how she came to curating, what her past life as a “lapsed artist” offers her curatorial practice, the experience of curating major solo shows and the ethical implications of her work. Talking Politics Guide to ... Deliberative Democracy

TALKING POLITICS

David talks to Matthew Taylor about whether more deliberation could remedy some of the defects in contemporary democracy. What can deliberative democracy add to traditional forms of political representation and how might it actually work in practice?Talking Points: The key feature of deliberative democracy is the idea that in order to fully tap into citizens’ views of an issue, you need to give them the time, information, and range of opinion to make an informed choice. The deliberative group should be a mini-public—it’s the same principle as a jury.Deliberative democracy allows you to see the process as well as the outcome. Many citizens change their minds.Deliberation can legitimize representative democracy and make it possible for politicians to take difficult decisions. But there are drawbacks too: it takes a lot of time and it can lead to polarization.Deliberation leads to more long term thinking and creates a sense of shared responsibility between citizens and the government. Some people are suspicious that deliberative democracy is simply an attempt to get progressive politics in by another route. So much of contemporary politics is about crowds, charisma, and slogans. Deliberative democracy is slow and informed. There should have been some kind of deliberative process before Brexit. There was a deliberative process before the Irish referendum, which made something that could have been incredibly divisive into a positive. But it might be too late for Brexit. Politicizing deliberative democracy could undermine it.Deliberative democracy needs to be a habit in order to work properly.Deliberative democracy is a form of democracy that is attractive and uplifting. It could be an antidote to the ugliness of contemporary politics.Deliberation is a gateway reform: if you make it a habit, you can use deliberative methodologies to explore other kinds of democratic reforms. The main barrier is ignorance, not hostility. With more Brexit chaos on us, we cut through some of the noise to talk about a new report on the future of referendums. How can we run them better in future? When is it appropriate to have a second referendum? What else can we do to reconnect democratic politics with the voters? With Gisela Stuart, former Labour MP and Chair of Vote Leave; Jenny Watson, former Chair of the Electoral Commission; and Alan Renwick of the Constitution Unit at UCL. Plus at the end some thoughts from David on where we are now.
