Starheart is a Musician, Composer, Filmmaker, and VTuber who has been doing live performances in VR over the past couple of years. She started making music videos on Halloween of 2022, and realized that she needed a persistent avatar. VR had already been creating a safe space for her to anonymously experiment with and discover her identity as a transgender woman, and she debuted her VTubing persona of Starheart on April 18, 2023 with a music video called "Elsewhere." Then three days later she opened for Naku on Phia's The Virtual Reality Show, which opened up opportunities to play at over 40 different music venues over the past year. VR has opened up many new opportunities for Starheart to discover the core essence of her identity and new modes of creative expression as an artist, musician, and filmmaker. Starheart is her name and persona, but it's much more than a character. In fact, she told The Metaculture magazine's K. Guillory last year that "Becoming Starheart has been integral for finding my musical voice, and is the most authentic version of myself as a performer I've ever been." I picked up on this thread to hear more about Starheart's creative journey into VR through her music videos, musical performances, filmmaking explorations and creation of her authentic identity beyond her physical body. Starheart's "I Still Love You" ended up winning the Best Music Video this year at Raindance, and this episode will be kicking off a series of interviews that I'll be doing with Raindance Immersive artists to get a better sense of what's been happening at the frontiers of virtual culture within the social VR platform of VRChat. Raindance Immersive is back with 40 independent VR experiences across eight categories of Immersive World, Immersive Experience, Immersive Art Experience, Immersive Music Experience, Immersive Narrative, Immersive Game, and two new categories of Short Film of VR and Music Video of VR, which are 2D films that are shot within virtual reality. 75% of this year's selection has some connection to a social VR platform with 28 connected to VRChat with single experiences in EngageXR and Resonite (i.e. the spiritual successor to NeosVR. I had a chance to catch up with the co-curators of Raindance Immersive of Mária Rakušanová and Joe Hunting to get a rundown and sneak peak of all 40 experiences at this year's selection that runs online in VRChat from November 4th to December 3rd. Nearly all of the screenings are free (everything aside from the gaming selection) with free sign-ups for live performances, guided tours, and screenings listed on their website. Raindance is at the forefront of curating the trends that are at the bleeding edge of virtual culture and the best-in-class of worldbuilding, live performances, and musical experiences within these VRChat and social VR environments. It's always great to hear more about how they curate this festival by being deeply in tune with the VRChat community and actively participating in events throughout the year to build relationships and create a creative deadline for immersive artists, worldbuilders, and storytellers to share their latest works. I can highly recommend checking out this year's selection, particularly the immersive world selection and be sure to drop by one of the screenings of films that were shot within VR chat as that's a new and exciting trend. I get a bit more historical context in this development from Hunting as he shares some of the early film festivals in VR, and selections of 2D films shot in VR that he curated starting in 2020. Phia's The Virtual Reality Show Film Fest featured a selection of 14 films shot in VRChat on February 25th, 2023, which led to the founding of a VRChat filmmaker Discord and provided a catalyst for collaboration and knowledge sharing with other VRChat-based filmmakers. Hunting provides a bit more context as to how the community got to that point, and why it was the perfect time for the VRChat filmmaker community to self-organize and for Raindance to expand their selection this year to feature these 2D films. Auf die heutige Folge habe ich mich sehr gefreut, denn Malte Zierden und Phia Quantius sind eines der sympathischsten Paare, die man gerade auf Social Media so mitbekommt. Malte ist eigentlich Musiker aus Ostfriesland und ging vor gut vier Jahren mit seinen selbstironischen Videos über eine ziemlich heftige Operation viral. Damals musste sein Kiefer gebrochen werden und obwohl das alles sehr schmerzhaft gewesen sein muss, nahm er es mit Humor. Maltes Freundin Phia ist Model und inzwischen ebenfalls ziemlich groß auf Tiktok und Instagram. Zusammen haben die beiden weit über 1 Million Follower. Mit denen teilen sie ihren Alltag in ihrer Hamburger Wohnung. Da geht es dann um Phias Leidenschaft für Zimmerpflanzen oder Maltes Freundschaft zu Taube Oßkar. Darüber hinaus engagieren sie sich aber auch intensiv im Tierschutz und in der Aufklärung über Migräne. Davon ist Phia nämlich selbst stark betroffen und sagt, dass es in unserer Gesellschaft immer noch wenig Wissen, aber viele Klischees zu Migräne gibt. Und das habe ich auch direkt an mir selbst gemerkt in diesem Gespräch. Ich wusste nicht, wie verbreitet Migräne ist und wie stark es den Alltag der Erkrankten einschränkt. Wir haben uns übrigens per Video-Schalte getroffen, weil Phia und Malte gerade in der Ukraine waren. Dort bauen sie mit einer Tierschutzorganisation ein Tierheim, für das sie online Spenden gesammelt hatten. Am Anfang unserer guten Stunde ging es deshalb zum Beispiel darum, was Tieren eigentlich im Krieg passiert und wie man ihnen helfen kann. Natürlich war ich aber auch neugierig. Wie sind die zwei überhaupt zusammengekommen? Wie finden sie in einen gemeinsamen Modus, wenn der eine irgendwie hyperaktiv ist, während die andere wegen ihrer Migräne oft eher Ruhe und möglichst wenig Reize braucht? Emma Pan and Joelle Min sit down with Phia Salter, associate professor of psychology at Davidson College, to talk about viewing systematic racism through critical race and cultural-psychological perspectives. Phia S. Salter is associate professor of psychology at Davidson College. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Kansas in 2010. In her research, she uses cultural-psychological and critical race perspectives to inform her work on collective memory, racial identity, and systemic racism. She's an associate professor of Psychology at Davidson College, and in this episode she draws a contrast between thinking of racism as an individual bias versus thinking of it as systemic. #015.  Today's guest is Phia Zacour Phia and her husband Mike reached Financial Freedom and retired from their traditional jobs in their early 30's with their two young kids.  Phia and I talk about the reasons why they pursued financial freedom, but why the reality of financial freedom did not line up with their expectations when they first transitioned to early retirement.  We discuss her childhood experiences and intentional lessons that Phia's parents taught her and how she developed an early negative association with debt.  We dive into why parents should let their kids fail early in order to lead to a growth mindset.  We get into the financial and non-financial reasons why parents should not buy their kids a cell phone, including the missed learning opportunities you have in teaching them financial lessons if you buy it for them.  We talk about why kids should manage their own screentime and ideas on how to implement a non-monetary token system to help teach them self-discipline, budgeting and responsibility.  We review strategies to teach kids as young as 2 years old the ability to delay gratification and why family meetings are Phia's favourite way to teach kids to have an open dialogue about money.  And we cover how calculating metrics such as cost per use allows kids to reflect on their spending decisions.Show notes and more at:https://moneydadpodcast.com/session015
