Samara  was born in in Baltimore, MD and lived in Jacksonville, Fla. till she was  25. At that point, Samara moved to Northwest North Carolina. At a young age, Samara envisioned her life quite differently, especially in the kitchen. This is where the story begins...."Marilyn didn't talk about her childhood very much because she doesn't have much that's positive to share, continues Samara. "When she was being raised, she was the product of what would be considered an illegitimate relationship. She was treated very much like the black sheep and the role that they found for her in the family was basically as  something of a servant. She was always cooking and cleaning up after everybody. And over the years, she says she started making food for the family when she was seven. Over the years, she developed her kraft and honed her techniques and  developed an actual love of her process."My guest says that her mother was a rebellious teenager in the early 1940's. Marilyn's mother, Samara's grandmother, did not have a true  presence in her daughter's life."To say that she was emotionally unavailable is pretty accurate," reflects Samara about her mom.  "Why are you crying, it's not going to bring them back" is what Marilyn would say to her daughter if she was sad and crying about loosing someone."Samara was drawn to her mom's passion of cooking. At the drop of a hat there'd be anywhere from 10 or more guests for dinner. Unfortunately, Samara would serve as the dish washer and cleaner and not an assistant to the chef. Samara remembers distinctly her mom prepping food for the holidays. "Her Passover Seders, were the meals that stand out to this day. It was because they were never less than an elaborate affair. She'd start cooking days in advance to make the chopped liver and stick it in the fridge and make the Gefilte fish  from scratch, you know,  it was an ordeal, every year." Today, the relationship is strained between mother and daughter.  Marilyn was a stay at home mom and  critically ill throughout Marilyn's life.  Mom has been bedridden for five years. Both parents are medical professionals but as Marilyn says, "they both hold their cards very close."Samara loves her mom. She says "my mom would give you the shirt off her back, she's was always very generous and a bit of a philanthropist." Despite their differences, Samara truly cares about her mom.Samara's mother is very generous and giving and really a philanthropist with hopes and desires to help others succeed. Despite their differences and challenges in their relationship, Samara truly loves her mother.Samara's current business -"Brew Naturals."  It's all about Elderberries and introducing the local community and retail  and online sales to the variety of snacks, honey, beer, treats, etc that she's created. Plus she loves collaborating with local businesses including breweries to a chocolatier, local creamery, etc. Hearing Samara talk about her Elderberry Apple Butter just makes my mouth water. In Samara's words:"I am a maker of gourmet elderberry products based in WNC. While nearly everyone familiar with elderberry comes to it by way of health and wellness, I'm endeavoring to change the conversation by highlighting its culinary applications. In this pursuit I have developed recipes using my elderberry syrup and had a number of collaborations with regional businesses from cafes/restaurants, creameries/chocolatiers, and even bars/breweries." WEBSITE:  https://www.brewnaturals.com https://www.facebook.com/brewnaturalshttps://www.instagram.com/brewnaturals

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island was the first colony to declare independence from Great Britain but it was the last colony to ratify the U.S. Constitution? That was because Rhode Island's delegates insisted on the Bill of Rights guaranteeing certain freedoms before they'd sign. - Now for our feature story: Nicole Yakaitis wasn't always a big fan of elderberries, but now that she's the CEO of a company that manufactures an organic syrup using the ancient berry as its main ingredient, she's come to more than appreciate its potent healing properties. Yakitaitis, a 24-year-old Westerly resident who runs the North Stonington-based family business, Gobble Mountain Elderberry Co.  said she "used to roll my eyes when my mom gave it to me when I was young. Now I take some every day." "It's not only an anti-viral," she said, "it's delicious." According to a report from the American Botanical Council, sales of elderberry supplements more than doubled in the United States between 2017 and 2018 to a total of nearly $51 million. And that was before the COVID-19 pandemic, which has sparked an explosion of interest in remedies that lessen the symptoms of colds and flus.  Gobble Mountain Elderberry has seen sales of its organic elderberry syrup soar since the Yakaitis family started the company last year. They sell bottles of their syrup to customers around the country and around the globe. Tim, Nicole's Father told us that "About two months after we formed the company, COVID hit, and As a result, sales have been off the charts." Sales of Gobble Mountain's syrup — a mixture that includes elderberries, astragalus root, cinnamon, ginger root, Oregon grape root and North Stonington honey — are fast approaching $200,000, he said. "Everything we use is organic and mostly local," Nicole said."Our honey is from Scott Pion's Honey and Beyond in North Stonington, and our grape root is from an organic farm in Oregon." "Organic and local," she stressed. "All organic all the time is what we like to say." Nicole said her mom worked with a laboratory to develop the Gobble Mountain Elderberry syrup recipe for about a year before the company was founded.  The business, said Nicole, is a true family affair. Her brother, Connor, often lends a hand, as does her boyfriend, Michael Johns, a North Providence firefighter who volunteers at the Westerly Fire Department. "We obviously want to make money," said Nicole, who studied criminal psychology at the University of Connecticut. "But our main goal is to help people. I've always wanted to help people. Now I can help with our syrup." Sixteen-ounce bottles of Gobble Mountain Elderberry syrup are $45 each and are available at Junk and Java; Indulge Coffee & Sandwich Company in Stonington; Make Your Mark Customs in Mystic, Fiddleheads Food Co-op in New London, and online at gobblemountainelderberry.com. -- There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Hi-Tech Profiles in Hopkinton. They're looking for a full-time customer service and inside sales representative. Would that be a good idea? Most rich people became prosperous by creating wealth. Jim Caruso took over a bankrupt brewery and turned it around by inventing creative craft beers. He now employs more than 100 people. The company he runs, Flying Dog Brewery, is worth millions. Caruso had a good answer when John Stossel asked him about the "unfairness" of some Americans having so much more money than others. The top fraction of earners does now own almost half America's assets. Caruso pointed out that Steve Jobs was worth $10 billion when he died, but since Apple sold more than 2 billion devices, Jobs collected just $5 per device. "I think Steve might have been underpaid here," he says. Most on the left don't see it that way. "The feeling tends to be that somebody like Steve Jobs took something away from everybody else," Caruso says. "But... what did Steve Jobs take? He had this idea, wouldn't it be great to have a thousand songs in your pocket... one of the most massively important tools for productivity and communication in life." Stossel says Jobs, and all entrepreneurs (if they don't partner with, or freeload off government) create more wealth than they take.  Free Speech for Allhttps://youtu.be/1BU3New0goc John StosselPeople complain that social media companies like Facebook and Twitter often ban good content. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 - --- What’s the solution? Create a platform that doesn’t ban anything! One such platform is called LBRY. I first covered LBRY two years ago after they rescued 20,000 college lectures that Berkeley had hidden from the public. Berkeley once made those videos freely available to everyone, but then the government declared that it's illegal to post videos without close-captions for the hearing impaired. Berkeley didn’t want to spend millions of dollars to pay people to add the captions, so it simply pulled them off their website. Now deaf people weren’t disadvantaged because NOBODY could watch them. Except, entrepreneur Jeremy Kauffman had fortunately already copied them all to his platform, LBRY. Now anyone can watch them—for free. I’m glad that LBRY exists. It gives everyone a chance to watch everything. A Taste of Homeschooling.https://youtu.be/kez87jw_2QMJohn StosselThe coronavirus pandemic is giving millions of parents a taste of homeschooling. ---- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- While kids are home now, what most are doing is not entirely “homeschooling.” Most parents just “assist” their kids’ former teachers, who now hold "Zoom” classes. But teachers struggle to keep students engaged remotely. Some teachers don't even use online videoconferencing. In Los Angeles, the teachers union even negotiated a contract that says teachers are not required to use it. So, as media outlets put it, there are now "parents and guardians forced into full-time homeschooling." Being out of school, they say, will “will set back a generation of children.” Bunk. Media outlets make it sound awful, but the reality is that homeschooled kids -- despite being from poorer families, on average, do better on tests. They also do better in college, and they are less likely to drink or do drugs. Here are the studies on it: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/... Homeschooling is also easier than ever, with new technology offering amazing new options for learning at home. Watch the video above to see how parents are switching to homeschooling in the pandemic. Egon von Greyerz on Gold.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear ACU Alumni- The following information is for your Covid-19 preparations.  Please secure all items on the list to have available for you or your loved ones.  COVID-19 MANAGEMENT PROTOCOLDeveloped and updated by Paul Marik, MDChief of Pulmonary and Critical Care MedicineEastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. Gosh, I can't even put words with it. It's just there are so great and it's so wonderful to have them and we just have gotten to this point now where they are pretty awesome. So let me introduce you to our little ones. Frank & Jackie: 00:51 Arianna skye is nine years old and she's in fourth grade. She turns 10, the big 10. She turned next month, next month, and I'm definitely going to cry. I'm having a hard time with that one. She is a true farm girl. She's got grit and personality. She is very headstrong. She's A. I wonder where she gets that. She's a born leader, so I've just keep reminding myself like this, this strong willed that she has right now. It's going to be incredible one day when she leads, like, she'll probably be the first president woman. That's my assumption. But we're just slightly. Yeah, really bias by the way. Live Right Now - Episode 019 – Building Immunity Make your body an inhospitable host for the Flu season The sugar season is here! It’s also the Flu Season! From Halloween to news year day…we binge. Dehydration, stress, less sleep, more alcohol, less sunlight, less exercise, eating more crappy, sugary food than usual. No wonder we get sick!! Your department of defense (DOD) needs you to provide weapons. Your immune system is your body’s version of the military: sworn to defend against all who threaten it, both foreign and domestic.  Truth-Natural forces within are the true healers. Your immune system works hard to protect you every day, but there are things you can do to help it out: Your immune system protects against disease, infection.  Sugar Is A Real Immune System Destroyer Sugar sucks and is a Human toxin-1960’s Bribed physicians reported that fat not sugar cased disease. Liar, liar pant on fire! Foods high in sugar tend to be devoid of nutrients, further hampering immune function which depends on vitamins, minerals and enzymes to function Princeton University- sugar can be physically addictive. Hits your brain like crack.  Sends a message to the brain, activating the its reward system.  Sugar has a similar effect on your brain to hanging out with friends, sex, and even drugs. Sugar reduces your white blood cells’ ability to kill pathogens in the body. In fact, 100 grams of sugar – about the equivalent found in 1 medium-sized soda bottle – can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill microorganisms by 40%.   Other diseases: Sugar promotes obesity.  Sugar promotes heart disease. too much sugar tends to have higher blood triglycerides, and this increases the risk of cardiovascular disease Sugar promotes diabetes by increases pancreatic secretion of insulin,  The impact on immune function occurs within 30 minutes of ingestion, and lasts up to 10 hours (Sanchez, 1973). Sugar competes with vitamin C for absorption into white blood cells.  Sleep If you’re not getting more than 5 hours of sleep a night, your immune system can become depressed, just like you. This leaves you open to colds, flu, and infection.  Sunshine Take a walk. Or D-3. Exposure to sunlight is how your body naturally produces vitamin D. This helps ward off depression, heart disease, and certain cancers. A fair-skinned person only needs about 10 minutes on a sunny day to get all the vitamin D they need. However, too much sun can cause temporary damage to your immune. Remember some sun is good, but you need to protect your skin when you plan to spend time outside.  Stress, Fear, Anger Your immune system is ready for anything you can throw at it. But it can only handle so much. During stress, a series of events release cortisol, adrenaline, and other stress hormones from the adrenal gland. Together they help your body cope with stress.  Deep breathing exercises Focus on the breath. Excessive Alcohol Excessive alcohol can damage the immune system because the alcohol will prevent nutrients from feeding your immune system. Alcohol will reduce the white blood cell count in the body. The lower the number of white blood cells, the more difficult it is to fight off disease.     The “Plant-based” solutions. Elderberry syrup or tincture Probiotics, alkaline ACV, D-3, hydration, sleep. Hydrate with water, not diet coke or sports drinks Eating more fresh RAW fruits and vegetables is a great way to get immune boosting benefits from Vitamin C and other phytonutrients found in fresh raw foods.  Dark greens like kale and spinach contain beta carotene and Vitamin E that help your body fend off cold and flu infections. Fresh red and pink produce like tomatoes, strawberries and pink grapefruit are especially high in Vitamin C. Citrus Fruits: However, it is common knowledge vitamin C provided by citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, and clementine’s contain antioxidants that can help prevent a cold before it happens.  Get a good night’s sleep. Your body can’t function correctly if you aren’t sleeping well. Deep breathing techniques to relax and chill Practice good hygiene. Washing your hands regularly can prevent infections. Eat a balanced diet and get plenty of exercise. Eating nutritious food and staying active will help your earth suit fight off infections.   Kitchari - A vitamin pill on a plate 1 cup cooked lentils or garbanzo 2 cups cooked quinoa 1 cup chopped almonds or walnuts 3 tbsp. unrefined virgin coconut oil 2 tbs. coconut milk 1-inch fresh ginger root, grated ot fry 1 tsp. fennel s 1 tsp. cumin 1 tsp. cinnamon Pinch of cayenne ½ tsp. turmeric 1 cup assorted, peas, carrots, cauliflower, red peppers, zucchini (cut into small pieces) Cilantro, chopped leaves 2 bu. chopped green onions 1 tbs. ground flax or chia seed Juice of one lemon   Thoroughly drain lentils. 2 Friends On A Couch

In the very special "episode" brought to you by the letter A and the number Q we get up off the couch and the whole proceedings occur with us on our feet, Mike makes a silent appearance playing #MassEffect and Devon reveals to Nicki that he's already played and beaten it before. Nicki speaks about the immunity strengthening properties of Elderberry Syrup and all Devon can think about is how Elderberries make him think of #DongNuggets. Which is sort of appropriate because the reason she is standing up is to prepare all of us a delicious meal of Dinosaur shaped fun (chicken) nuggets that makes us go into a quote off of #JurassicPark and #JurassicWorld (Devon's father of course being the only person to still not have seen Jurassic World) We also do a lot of shout outs to Ponytail Jeff and like the titular Betelgeuse that ends up with him being invited to join us on the couch the next time he is available and we are recording. So please rise and join us for this all standing no dancing installment with your 2 Friends usually on a Couch!
