This episode's guest is Jesse Ross, designer of Trophy Dark. Trophy Dark is a narrative game about doomed treasure hunters venturing into a forest that doesn't want them there.I'm a late discoverer of Trophy Dark; I read it just a few months ago, and it radically changed the way I see and play RPGs. The book delivers such a strong and consistent gameplay experience with a very simple mechanical architecture. You know I like horror RPGs, and Trophy Dark, in a way, is a medieval fantasy forest horror game. It's unique and beautifully designed, with a mesmerizing quality and a set of mechanics that allow for amazing gameplay to emerge. In this episode, we'll talk about a dragonfly invasion, things Jesse sees in the dark, coping with hubris, and how to build a truly meaningful collaborative gameplay experience.Jesse's websitewww.jesseross.comTrophy Darkwww.trophyrpg.comRooted in crisis website and Kickstarter pagewww.rootedincrisis.comwww.kickstarter.com/projects/jesseross/rooted-in-crisisStorewww.thelostbaystudio.comNewsletterwww..thelostbaystudio.substack.com/subscribe?Follow the The Lost Bay Podcastwww.bsky.app/profile/thelostbaystudio.comwww.instagram.com/thelostbaystudio/Produced by IkoEditing Laura ElleMusic Avery Isles
On November 20, 2006, 19-year-old Jesse Warren Ross called his mother and told her about the incredible time he was having in Chicago at the Model UN Conference. He and several classmates from the University of Missouri–Kansas City had made the trip just days earlier. But Jesse never made it home. At around 2:00 a.m. on November 21, a select group of students, including Jesse, were called in for a late-night crisis simulation at the Sheraton on East North Water Street, where the conference was being held. The simulation was expected to last for hours. But at around 2:30 a.m., Jesse stood up, said he needed a break, and walked out of the hotel. He was never seen again. It has now been more than eighteen years since Jesse disappeared, leaving his friends and family still searching, and still wondering—what happened to Jesse Ross that night? 19-year-old Jesse Warren Ross was attending a Model UN conference in November 2006 in Chicago. On the night of the 20th, he returned to his hotel, the Four Points Sheraton on North Rush Street, with his classmates. After drinking for a few hours, they decided to attend the conference dance at the Sheraton on East North Water Street. Surveillance footage captured Jesse walking from his hotel to the conference hotel at around 12:45 a.m. on what was now November 21st. He was wearing a white t-shirt, a green hoodie, blue jeans, and black sneakers. The last confirmed sighting of him was at 2:30 a.m., when cameras recorded him leaving the conference hotel. He has not been seen since. At the time of his disappearance, Jesse was 5'10” and weighed 140 pounds. He had short red hair, blue eyes, and freckles, and often went by the nickname "Opie." He also wore glasses. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chicago Police Department at 312-745-5206 or the Missouri State Highway Patrol Missing Persons Unit at 1-800-877-3452. Last Spring, one of our best friends, Jesse, started to pursue his passion in filmmaking. He wanted to try his hand at crafting a story in a documentary. He saw our coverage of the latest Survivor AU season and wanted to feature us as his first project. And so, Speaking Llama: A Survivor Podcast Journey was born! In this podcast episode, we sit down with Jesse to learn more about his inspiration for the documentary, his storytelling of a podcast in a video format, and of course, a few Survivor opinions. --- Check out the full documentary here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnefCxbCkKw&t=2s --- If you want to find out more about Jesse and his work, check out @itsjesseross on Instagram! Jesse Ross had so much going for him. A 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, he was headed to Chicago for the second time to take part in a model United Nations program. But when Jesse got up and walked out of the conference room at about 2:30 AM during a break for a mock emergency meeting, a real-life disaster was in the making. Alarms were raised the next day when it came time for fellow students to head back to Kansas City and Jesse was nowhere to be found. Police were eventually called, along with Jesse's parents, and an investigation was launched, but in the 18 years since Jesse walked out of that conference room, not a trace of him has been found. What happened to Jesse that chilly November night? Did he, under the influence of alcohol, end up in the river, his body washed away forever? Did he encounter a nefarious person or persons upon exiting the hotel? Or did something happen to Jesse within the premises, the evidence being covered up?Returning guest Joann Li is back--join us as we talk through the details and speculate about what could have happened to Jesse. When it comes to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, or DEI, I feel that there's often a more nuanced conversation to be had. So to create that conversation, I invited Jesse Ross on the show! Jesse is a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, executive coach, and international speaker who has delivered over 400 speaking engagements at colleges, conferences, corporate and nonprofit companies, with a large number of Fortune 500 companies. We dig right into Jesse's work and the specific strategies that he's used to help create real DEI momentum. You'll hear about his story, and how he's working in real time to change the way we think about DEI.In this episode, we break down…What actually builds Diversity, Equity and Inclusion! Less performative actions and theorizing, and more of the reality of what really works. How to understand yourself so that you can better get to know and understand others. The importance of communication in promoting and enabling DEI.A fuller, more inclusive definition of what DEI really means and what it covers beyond the most frequently discussed aspects of it.How to appropriately understand and handle conflict regarding DEI.Key Quotes & Conclusions…“Are you answering the question that nobody's asking? If I'm answering the question that nobody's asking, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing– but maybe I should focus on what people are asking first.”“The systemic outcome can't pre-determine success based on numbers. We can't say because I have five of these and six of these and seven of those, now we get equity. It just doesn't work out like that.”“It comes through spending time, having exposure to people that are different from us, building that vocabulary, doing the trainings and experiencing things together.”“People don't actually realize how much time it takes to build that trust. We hear companies say ‘This is a safe space' and I always tell people, ‘just because you say it's a safe space, it doesn't make it safe.'”“I do think it's best when it comes from the top, but I do think there's some spaces where it doesn't have to, or it doesn't have to start there.”Resources Mentioned:More From Jesse RossGet Involved in Jesse's Work:https://www.gofundme.com/f/wealthredistributionprojectFollow mehttps://www.instagram.com/mrjross/Learn morewww.2518NorthSecondStreet.comwww.wealthredistributionproject.comWORK WITH ASHLEY:Wanna Mastermind Together? Billy talks to Jesse Ross, a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, executive coach, and international speaker who has delivered over 400 speaking engagements at colleges, conferences, corporate and nonprofit companies, with a large number of those being Fortune 500 companies including LinkedIn, General Mills, and the NBA. Jesse offers trainings, workshops, evaluations, assessments, and strategy development for schools, businesses, and organizations. Jesse has been engaging his audience with his Morning Minute calls-to-action on his Instagram and LinkedIn page since before our world went into civil unrest. He is here today to talk about his diversity and inclusion work as well as the anti-racist conversations he has with white men and white women each week, which you can sign up for here. Billy asks Jesse: --You alternate hosting anti-racist conversations with white men and white women each week. What differences do you hear in those conversations (if any)?--How do you get in front of people who would benefit from engaging in anti-racist dialogue in a way that doesn't activate a fight/flight/fright response from them? Or is that just simply impossible?--You've mentioned that at times you feel like you're put in a position to answer on behalf of all of Black America during interviews/conversations around race, and my theory on why people do that is because we're oftentimes looking for just one solution to a complex issue without having to dissect the nuances of human behavior because then we can cling to an opinion that suits our narrative. How do you help people see these nuances during your sessions/conversations?--What are some examples you've seen lately of good-intentioned white people being tone-deaf when it comes to issues within the Black community?--You've talked about “navigating white spaces. What is that experience like for you and what is that experience like for the people of color you talk to that someone like me might take for granted.--You've talked about asking a few people of a community to get a better understanding if you're unsure about how something might sound so you don't do damage or come off as tone deaf,” so here's my question to you: we started this podcast to normalize conversations around mental health. Through our research, the data from the AFSP shows that middle-aged white men have the highest rate of suicide, and white males account for 70% of all suicides. We want to be mental health advocates and focus on this demographic because we're members of this demographic. How would you suggest we package that messaging so that we don't come off as tone deaf?Like what you heard from Jesse Ross? Contact him using the links above! On this episode of the Post Podcast, Fort Hays State University Rodeo team members Brent Hornbuckle and Jessi Ross share information about the upcoming FHSU rodeo. Transcript: EDITORS NOTE: Transcripts are provided by an automated service and are not verified for accuracy. James Bell For a state university set for the rodeo this weekend, team members Jesse Ross and Brent Hornbuckle stopped by to tell us a little bit about the festivities on this episode of the post podcast. Brent Hornbuckle Seven o'clock each night, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Thursday, James Bell Friday and Saturday. Now, if I remember correctly from the last time, you folks were here, the rodeo grounds, it's a little different now. Right? Brent Hornbuckle Actually, we are doing it at the Phillipsburg. James Bell Okay, so you're back out at the fairgrounds or at our rodeo arena at the college. Okay, see, this is why you gotta you got a clue straight out here. I don't know what's going on ever. So did the college Thursday, Friday, Saturday, seven o'clock, what are people going to see during the events? Jessi Ross So we'll have a mixture of rough stock and timed events. So there's bucking horses, ball ride and barrel racing, and a bunch of team roping and calf roping. Just a little bit. Everything. James Bell Fantastic. Yeah, that's what I love. You know, and that's the great part about rodeo. Right? It's it's a diverse, and you get to see all kinds of different showmanship. Jessi Ross Yes, it's definitely a thrill. It's never boring. James Bell Absolutely. Now, are you guys ready to go coming up this Thursday? Brent Hornbuckle as of tonight, we will be one more day of practice. Yeah, one more day of practice and prep. So excellent. James Bell If folks are wanting to go out there and see the events, what's the easiest and best way for them to do that? Did you have to get tickets? Or is this offering? Brent Hornbuckle Well, the you can buy advance tickets, which will save you a little money, you can pick those up at Orleans Vanderbilts and the Memorial Union on campus. Those tickets around you $8 for adults $5 for kids. And then if you do want to just come out to the rodeo at the gate the tickets for adults are $12 and the tickets for kids are eight and kids five and under get in for free. Okay, and that's per night, per night. Okay? James Bell All right, very good. And then so you know if for folks for those out there listening people like myself that aren't super familiar with rodeo Jesse knows who I'm talking about last time she was here I told her all about this. I don't know anything about rodeo you know what, what kind of expectations should people have going into this? Or is it just show up and have a good time? Brent Hornbuckle I wouldn't have much expectations and then show up and have a good time because you never know what's gonna happen. You could see really good runs, you could see pretty crazy wrecks and or you could see everything run smooth. You know, it's a rodeo, you can't ever plan for about anything to happen. You just hope for the best. James Bell Very cool. What do you guys have to do to get the grounds ready or is it is there really anything involved in that? Jessi Ross Well, we have to set banners you know, prep everything. And for the barrel racers out there. You want to get that ground really good. So in the past, we've had some pretty sketchy weather, but this weekend is looking beautiful, so we're hoping the ground will stay good antastic set everything up. James Bell What kind of weather is ideal for this? Are you looking for like that mid 60s Low breeze or do you like a little rain or overclass? How overcast? What's the best Jessi Ross Personally I'd like it sunny and 75 everybody bye. But you know in Kansas Beggars can't be choosers so you kind of have to plan for a little bit of wind but definitely not rain and snow. James Bell Yeah, no snow snow never is good for sports. Any sports I don't think unless you're a skier All right. Well, guys, I know you've got to get over to the bowl. Any other last thoughts or anything else we want to hit on before we go? Brent Hornbuckle No, we just hope to see a bunch of you out there and come support the Tigers. Very good. James Bell Again Thursday, Friday and Saturday seven o'clock on the Fort Hays State University rodeo grounds. Brent Hornbuckle Yep. Doug Phillip arena. It's on the golf course.

In 2006, a 19-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri headed off to Chicago with a group of fellow college students to attend a mock United Nations convention. But after a long day of conferences and a night of fun with peers, he disappeared. When he didn't show up on surveillance cameras leaving the hotel, and a massive search turned up nothing, family, friends, and investigators seriously pondered what on earth happened to him. This is the story of Jesse Ross. On this episode of Just One Q, Dr. Melissa Horne chats with diversity equity and inclusion consultant, executive coach and international speaker, Mr. Jesse Ross. Together, they discuss a more holistic approach to DEI training and why it may be more impactful.
One day Jesse Ross decided to apply his ample skills at fundraising for nonprofit and other organizations to a few projects of his own choosing. He set no maximum goal, no limit. The result was $200,000 and counting going toward the community projects he chose to support. No surprise that among the causes he supports is relief for the unhoused/homeless. Jesse spent a year of his youth homeless and he shares his experience with us. Jesse has developed his core values of integrity, transparency and relationships and uses that foundation to make what others might doubt come to pass. Those values certainly played a role in his being admitted into an MBA program even though he had not actually completed his undergraduate studies. Jesse Ross is a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, executive coach, and international speaker who has delivered over 400 speaking engagements. Favorite song is I'll Be Loving You Always by Stevie Wonder. Favorite movie is Love Jones. Favorite words: “Everything you need can be found in the house." Seeking the the sunken treasures offered up to the sea, Orlin, Russel, and Nima head onto the seas to find either untouched riches or their doom Beyond the forest lies a jagged rocky coast where, for generations now, a small seaside village hasobserved the rites of Greentide. Each spring, as the first green shoots emerge, village elders weave sapling branches and seaweed into an effigy in the likeness of a young woman. The sculpture is filled with gifts before it is cast into the waves as an offering to the Queen of Tides, along with prayers for a bountifulcatch and protection from storms. This ancient tradition harkens back to an age when the ancestors would crown a young woman as theTide Queen and offer her to the sea in sacrifice. Chieftains and princes would travel far to attend theceremony, pledging gold, jewels, and the finest of crafts. To this day, local fisherman never leave shorewithout paying her their respects—for the tide, they say, must have its due.Strange as the customs of an isolated village may be, it has not escaped the notice of keen treasure hunters such as yourselves that centuries of offerings and shipwrecks have left a great hoard ofuntouched riches beneath the waves. You know of the island offshore where the offerings are tipped overboard. You have heard rumors of a cove there, just visible at low tide. Superstitious villagers avoid it, butyou know better than to believe their tales. Our cast was:Jacob as OrlinJustin as Russel “Rush” can be found on his weekly stream Junkdrawer on TwitchAustin as Nemaand David as our Game MasterTrophy Dark is a game designed by Jesse Ross and published by the Gauntlet and Hegemaze Press.Music for this episode included:-Gamela by E's Jammy Jams-Symmetry of Sleeplessness by Dan Bodan-Sad Songs Pt. 1 Bells by Fake Cats Project -Brushed Bells in the Wind by Daniel Birch

Lauren McManamon and I talk about her game Girl Underground as we discuss the move Stand Strong in Your Convictions. At the heart of this game is a sense of empowerment and discovery by The Girl who is striving to turn imposed manners into personal beliefs. Mechanically this move calls on those beliefs to help The Girl overcome challenges she may face and narratively color the action around how the challenge is dealt with. The GM is pretty hands-off with this move, only stepping in to mix things up on a miss. Jesse Ross and I delve into the mysterious and dangerous forest of Trophy to discuss the Risk Roll, one of only three in the game. It mechanically encapsulates navigating tricky situations and the risk involved, both physical and mental. This move drives the bulk of the story forward and offers players nearly complete narrative control. The GM can also entice the players to push their luck to achieve their goals at the risk of falling prey to the ominous forest.
