When she is not in school or playing sports, Megan participates in 4-H, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, youth sports camp volunteer, volunteer referee, mentor for disabled youth, and peer tutoring. For Megan, agriculture means the true backbone of her identity. Who she has become can be greatly attributed to the agriculture industry. Chris Haynes, associate professor in International Affairs, National Security, and Political Science at the University of New Haven talks about the changing nature of political science, the increasing political divide, and the impact of experiential learning on student development. Dr. Haynes is an expert on immigration, political framing, presidential elections, race and ethnicity, and the impact the changing media landscape is having on politics and public opinion. He is also the co-author of the book Framing Immigrants: News Coverage, Public Opinion, and Policy; founder and director of the University's Model United Nations program; and the primary liaison between the University and the Washington Internship Institute.

In this episode of the WAB podcast, we have four special guests: Grade 7 student Mary, Grade 8 student Lachlan, Grade 10 student Ben, and Irina Karimova, the supervisor of WAB's Model United Nations (Model UN / MUN) Club. Together, they shared their inspiration for joining the Model UN club, how they prepare, their experiences, and personal growth along the way. Irina introduced how the Model UN is a platform for students interested in current affairs to learn and discuss global issues together. During Model UN conferences, students are assigned a country and role-play its delegation. Irina emphasized that the club aims to foster dialogue, broaden horizons, and highlight the importance of collaboration.    Ben, who joined the Model UN Club in seventh grade, described how it helped him learn about different countries. As a Grade 10 student, he now has been twice selected as the conference chair. Ben shared the extensive preparation required for this role, such as writing detailed reports to guide delegates' research and providing an overview of the topics. He encouraged other students to participate, assuring them that everyone starts with similar nerves and mistakes, emphasizing the importance of taking the first step.   Lachlan, a Grade 8 student, spoke about the significance of considering a country's stance when preparing position papers and opening speeches, particularly for important conferences like UNISMUN, the Model UN Conference held at the United Nations International School in Vietnam.   Grade 7 student Mary joined the Model UN Club due to her interest in Geography. And having participated for one year, she has won herself "Most Improved Delegate" at a recent Model UN conference in Beijing. The treaty addresses the need to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity in these vast oceanic regions, which have been historically challenging to manage due to the lack of clear regulations and governance mechanisms. By focusing on the high seas, the treaty seeks to establish marine protected areas and implement environmental impact assessments to mitigate potential harm to the marine environment. Representing a pivotal moment in international ocean governance, the High Seas Treaty provides a framework for countries to collaborate and make decisions regarding the conservation of these critical marine areas. Its provisions include establishing area-based management tools, such as marine protected areas, to contribute to the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030. The treaty also addresses issues related to marine genetic resources and access and benefit sharing, highlighting the importance of equitable governance and fair distribution of benefits derived from marine discoveries. Additionally, it emphasizes capacity building and technology transfer to ensure all countries can actively participate in its implementation. Moving forward, the focus will be on ratifying the treaty and working towards its entry into force. Countries are expected to engage in awareness-raising activities, consult with stakeholders, and establish the necessary institutional frameworks to support the treaty's implementation. Efforts will also be made to identify priority areas for conservation, such as the Selly Gomez and Nazca Ridges in the South Pacific, to begin the process of safeguarding these ecologically significant high seas regions. The process of ratifying the High Seas Treaty involves several key steps to ensure the treaty's successful implementation. One crucial aspect is awareness-raising, which aims to inform relevant stakeholders about the treaty's content, goals, and implications. This step is essential to garner support and understanding from governments, organizations, and individuals involved in ocean governance. Consultation with stakeholders is another vital component of the ratification process. The treaty emphasizes the importance of engaging with various groups, including governments, coastal states, civil society, indigenous communities, and scientific experts. By seeking input and feedback from these diverse stakeholders, the decision-making process becomes more inclusive and reflective of different perspectives and interests. Institution building plays a significant role in establishing the necessary bodies for decision-making and compliance with the High Seas Treaty. The treaty outlines the creation of specific committees and bodies, such as the Conference of Parties, scientific advisory bodies, and implementation compliance committees. These institutions are crucial for overseeing the implementation of the treaty, monitoring compliance, and addressing any issues that may arise during the conservation efforts in the high seas. The preparatory committee meetings serve as a platform for discussing key decisions and preparations for the treaty's entry into force. These meetings bring together representatives from member states, organizations, and experts to address critical issues, plan strategies, and ensure a smooth transition towards implementing the treaty's provisions. By engaging in these preparatory discussions, stakeholders can align their priorities, address potential challenges, and lay the groundwork for effective conservation efforts in the high seas. The identification of priority sites for marine protected areas is a proactive step towards conservation efforts in the high seas. Organizations like the High Seas Coalition are already working on securing protections for key areas, such as the Selly Gomez and Nazca Ridges in the South Pacific. While the formal establishment of marine protected areas may take time, preliminary actions like fisheries closures can be implemented to start safeguarding these ecologically significant regions. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to conservation even before the treaty's full implementation, setting the stage for future protection measures in the high seas. Future Steps for the High Seas Treaty In the upcoming years, several key initiatives are set to take place to further advance the goals of the High Seas Treaty: Achieving the 60th Ratification by 2025: The High Seas Alliance, a coalition of NGOs working towards ocean conservation, has set a goal to reach the 60th ratification of the treaty by the UN Ocean Conference of 2025. This milestone signifies the entry into force of the treaty, marking a significant step towards global ocean protection. Organizing Preparatory Committee Meetings: A preparatory committee meeting is scheduled to convene at the UN to discuss crucial decisions and preparations for the entry into force of the treaty. This meeting will focus on laying the groundwork for the implementation of the treaty, addressing key issues, and ensuring a smooth transition once the treaty is in effect. Identifying Priority Sites for Marine Protected Areas: Efforts are underway to identify priority sites for marine protected areas in the high seas. Organizations like the High Seas Coalition, which includes Pew, are actively working to secure protection for important areas such as the Selly Gomez and Nazca Ridges in the South Pacific. While the formal establishment of marine protected areas may require the treaty to be in force, preliminary work, such as advocating for fisheries closures, can begin to lay the foundation for future conservation efforts. At the meetings of the German Model United Nations in Melbourne, German students develop a political consensus. Ideally, they also pass a resolution. This not only improves their German language skills, but also their political education. Karin Täubner has been the Secretary General of the model plenary session for the past three years. In this interview, she talks about what makes these meetings so special. The month of November 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. To learn more, we welcome two UNCP faculty members for a conversation about the political climate of the time, and implications for the decades to follow. We discuss how these themes are taught in classrooms today, and what relevance and lessons the assassination and subsequent killing of Lee Harvey Oswald have for society. Drs. Marineau and Hudson, who met as students at the University of Texas at Austin, both came to UNC Pembroke and reconnected as faculty, sharing interest in twentieth century history and politics. Dr. Josiah Marineau is an Associate Professor of Political Science at UNCP and faculty advisor and coach for the Model United Nations program. He specializes in Comparative Politics and International Relations with a focus on the South Caucasus as well as central and eastern Africa. In addition to ongoing fieldwork in Georgia, he has conducted fieldwork in Uganda, Malawi, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Tanzania. He has published in Studies in Comparative International Development, Conflict Management and Peace Science, and the Journal of Political Science Education, among others. Dr. James Hudson has been teaching at UNCP in the Department of History since 2018, and is a specialist in modern Chinese history. His research interests focus on China's urban modernization and the impact of western colonialism and imperialism in China during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His publications have provided new and valuable insight into the history of American businesses, missionary organizations, and diplomats during this period. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (01/06/2023): 3:05pm- On Friday, the U.S. House of Representative reconvened to decide the next Speaker of the House. On the 12thand 13th ballots, fifteen Republicans who had opposed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) earlier this week changed their vote after McCarthy agreed to several concessions. According to Politico's reporting, the concessions seem to be minor. Were they enough to justify the holdout? Despite new-found momentum, McCarthy remains several votes short of the Speakership.  3:15pm- While appearing on Fox News, Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) explained why he now supports Kevin McCarthy after voting against him eleven times earlier this week.  3:30pm- Zeoli Speaks with Listeners: Assuming McCarthy is ultimately selected as Speaker, were the concessions negotiated by the Freedom Caucus holdouts substantial? Or does the holdout now seem more symbolic than tangible? 3:40pm- Reportedly, one of the concessions gained by Freedom Caucus holdouts is the establishment of a new “Church Committee” to investigate the Federal Government's weaponization of domestic surveillance.  4:05pm- While commemorating the two-year anniversary of the January 6th, Capitol riot, President Joe Biden implored Americans to never forget “July 6th”…wait, what? 4:15pm- During her Friday press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre blamed the Trump Administration for the “mess” at the U.S. Southern border. President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit the border this Sunday. According to reporting from The Daily Wire, “Biden is expanding a ‘parole' program for Venezuelans to include migrants from Nicaragua, Cuba, and Haiti.” His administration “will accept 30,000 people from those countries a month as long as they have family or another tie to the U.S. already.” 4:25pm- Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says that he has the votes to be confirmed as Speaker of the House. The House is expected to reconvene and hold a fourteenth vote at 10pm ET on Friday.  4:45pm- While commemorating the two-year anniversary of the January 6th, Capitol riot, President Joe Biden implored Americans to never forget “July 6th.” Henry investigates what historical events Biden may have been referring to…and they're all stupid. 4:50pm- Does Raul Castro send Prime Minister Justin Trudeau $20 every year on his birthday?  5:05pm- According to CNN's Manu Raju, Kevin McCarthy remains two votes short of being elected Speaker of the House—but McCarthy's team is trying to flip holdouts Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) and Matt Rosendale (R-MT). 5:20pm- A perverted Australian walrus disrupted a New Years Eve fireworks display… 5:25pm- MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace stated that the only people enjoying the Speakership debate are “newscasters attached to Kremlin state media”—specifically referencing Fox News host Tucker Carlson. 5:30pm- According to a report from economists at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, the U.S. government would need to raise taxes by 40% or reduce spending by 30% in order to achieve a fiscal balance.  5:50pm- Did you know Alec Baldwin once hosted a show on 1210 WPHT? North Country high school students reckon with the war in Ukraine. Also: Lake Placid is hosting bigtime international competitions in biathlon and ski jumping this weekend.

Yelyzaveta Frolkis is a double major, studying Business Economics at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (KNU) as well as studying Law at National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA). Born in the capital Kyiv, Liza participated in 22 scientific and practical conferences of Model United Nations, with 18 of them as participant and 4 of them as an organizer. In 2019, she was the President of the Model UN Junior in Lyceum "Naukova Zmina," and Chair of Economic and Social Council UN at MUN Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth (KPCY). And she represented Ukraine in the second delegation ever that attended YMUN as a part of the team in 45th annual MUN in Yale University (in USA), the mandate of Kingdom of Bahrain in the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP). In 2020, she was the Chair of Economic and Social Council UN at an online MUN Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth (KPCY), and the President of the "Next HUB MUN" in KPCY. Liza also took places in the All-Ukrainian student olympiad in Law 2018/2019, and in the Geography and landscape science section of the Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2019/2020. In May 2020, Liza defended a Business Plan as a part of microeconomics course called "International Creative University", created by the example of Minerva University. And as a practicing gymnast, Liza took the Grand Prix in a festival in Slovakia in 2013, won the first degree in two categories in a festival "VIVA L'ITALIA!" in Italy in 2014, and in 2015, she took first place in the contest "Baltic Brilliant" in Lithuania, diplomas signed by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Lithuania Valeriy Zhovtenko. When it comes to the English language, where Liza reached a C1 level, she has attended courses in England in 2015 and 2017, attended the London School of English in Kyiv from 2016 to 2020, and took second place in the stage 2 of the All-Ukrainian student olympiad in English in 2018/2019 and an Honourable mention for special achievements in learning English in 2021. John Patterson (D-Jefferson)Dr. John Patterson represented Ohio's 99th House district from January 1, 2013 until December 31, 2020, when he left office due to term limits. Patterson earned his bachelor's degree from Marietta College, his master's degree in political science from Ohio University and his Ph.D. in education from Kent State University. Patterson taught U.S. history at Jefferson Area High School for 29 years prior to his retirement in June, 2012. He has also instructed undergraduate courses at Kent State and  taught at the graduate level for Gannon University. While at Jefferson Area High School, Patterson served as the Model United Nations advisor, and coached girls basketball, boys baseball, golf and, for the last 12 seasons of his career, boys' cross-country. He was very active in the Jefferson Area Teachers' Association, serving as chief negotiator for his union. Patterson is now a member of OEA-Retired. In this episode:"The funding for new buildings and such, you can put a check mark there; we're making great progress. But the day-to-day expenditures has remained a problem, and I say this for two reasons: It all comes down to adequacy and equity." 2:00 - The Fair School Funding Plan as House Bill 1 and the four DeRolph cases that determined Ohio's current school funding formula is unconstitutional. 3:00 - Consulting with experts around Ohio to determine how much it actually costs to educate a student 4:25 - How experience in the classroom informs understanding of the issues and helps Patterson explain the challenges to fellow lawmakers. 5:45 - Calculating an accurate base cost 6:35 - Incorporating the "categoricals" -- the increased costs of providing transportation, educating English Language Learners, gifted students, special needs students, and more -- into the comprehensive Fair School Funding Plan formula. 7:10 - Determining a local district's fair share of the costs, taking into account that a community's property wealth on paper may not accurately reflect its citizens' ability to pay higher property taxes. The Fair School Funding Plan incorporates a 60-40 split between property wealth and income levels to determine local capacity. 10:00 - Providing direct funding for vouchers and charters under the Fair School Funding Plan, rather than deducting resources from local public school districts. 11:15 - The years of work to develop the Fair School Funding Plan in partnership with State Rep. Bob Cupp (R-Lima), who now serves as Ohio House Speaker 13:00 - "We realized that the formula was absolutely broken." 14:00 - The Fair School Funding Plan passed the Ohio House with overwhelming bipartisan support in late 2020, but the Senate failed to consider it before the end of the legislative session. Tobi Bankole, the Director of Outreach for Students for Black Lives, is an incoming freshman at Stanford University, where she plans to study Political Science and Creative Writing. She was born in Hull, England, and raised in Virginia to a Nigerian-English family. She is passionate about intersectional activism, literature, and politics. Myanno Miller, Director of Operations for Students for Black Lives, is a Los Angeles raised incoming freshman at Northwestern University planning to study International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies. She is half Black, half Burmese and was born in Tokyo, Japan. She has been in Model United Nations for six years and hopes to continue through college.
