For the rest of Ordinary Time we will consider how the gospel speaks to our many varied days. We are using a book of prayers by Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie called The Lives We Actually Have as our structure and a source of inspiration. In this sermon we end our series, as well as begin a new on all on the same Sunday. On this Sunday we will celebrate All Saints Day by starting a three-weeks series devoted to the lives of the saints and how we encounter the gospel in them.

We are using a book of prayers by Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie called The Lives We Actually Have as our structure and a source of inspiration. Today's sermon is about our overwhelming days. In this sermon consider two passage of Scripture as capturing the experience of being overwhelmed. In one sense we are like Peter, drowning in what's beyond our control. In another sense we are like Martha, distract by everything other than what matters most.

Two audio notes this week: There's a silent gap for several seconds at minute 20, but hang tight! It comes right back! Megan's audio during the prayer goes in and out. You can read the full text here: From The Lives We Actually Have, by Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie "For when this pain doesn't make sense" God, I'm fumbling around for answers, reasons, meaning.I can't find any purpose in this pain. Why me?Why them? Why now?I don't know when this is going to get better.Or if I will ever feel relief.God, make this pain matter... at least to you.See me in my fragility.Give me a reminder of your presence.Reach for me,for I am too weary to reach for you.Blessed are we who need to be remindedthat there are some things we can fix ... and some things we can't.Blessed are we who can say:My life isn't always getting better.Right in the midst of the pain and fear and uncertainty, may we hunt for beauty and meaning and truth... together. Not to erase the pain or solve the pain (though surely that would be nice),but to remind us that beauty and sorrow coexist. And that doesn't mean we're broken or have been forgotten.God is here, and we are never-were never and will never be-alone.In our hope. In our disappointment. In our joy. In our pain.God, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Spirit, have mercy. Amen. Jessica's back and we're talking all our favorites: summer memories, go-to meals, outfits and mantras. Plus, things what we're letting go of, what (and who) is inspiring us and how to make the mornings go smoother. We love the book The Lives We Actually Have: 100 Blessings for Imperfect Days by Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie. These are Jessica's favorite running shorts. Unfortunately, the linen pants she's been enjoying are all sold out! Here's a podcast episode with Steve Martin that Michelle loved. And here's a black version of the jumpsuit she's loving.
My friend Jennie just lost her friend Katie, which of course makes em think about my friend Liz, who died almost 8 years ago now. To make a bit of sense of things, I turned to a book of blessings by my friend Kate Bowler and her friend Jessica Richie. I offer a selection here as a salve for Jennie, for myself, for any of you who are looking for a place to rest in your grieving. Please share with the people you love.

The Blessing of Imperfect Days with Kate BowlerIt's easy to be caught in the trap of perfectionism, especially when those around us seem to have it all together. But we can find ourselves alone and discouraged when things don't go as we've planned, and the lives we actually have fail to resemble those we'd hoped to lead.In her recently released book The Lives We Actually Lead, New York Times best-selling author and Duke University professor Kate Bowler (along with co-author Jessica Richie) offer a collection of blessings that center gratitude and hope while acknowledging the reality of our often messy and frantic everyday lives. They show how embracing our limitations and vulnerabilities, as well as those of others, can open new possibilities for healing, hope, and community.Finitude, Gratitude, and Being of HelpIn this conversation, Kate shares about her work detailing the Prosperity Gospel movement from an academic standpoint, and how her own setbacks and health catastrophe in a cancer diagnosis both deepened her sense of being loved by God and softened her toward those desperate for a miracle.Kate and Cherie's conversation goes through deep waters, but does so with much humor and heart. We hope you'll listen and share it with your friends and loved ones. This podcast is an edited version of an Evening Conversation with Kate recorded in February of 2023. Welcome to SEASON TEN of the Everything Happens Podcast! I started this podcast as a way to create language and community around some of life's most painful moments. I was so overwhelmed by the question of how do we live in the after? After a diagnosis, after a death, after a divorce, after something that changes our lives or takes it apart. I had just been diagnosed with stage four colon cancer and I was only 35. I had a two year old at home with this giant lovey Disney eyes, and I had the job that I loved, and then suddenly, I had a picture of a future that was just never going to be. So I wanted to know, like, how do we do this? How do you find joy and hope and love even after life comes undone? And after years of treatment and years of uncertainty, I guess I realized somewhere along the way that this wasn't really a one and done kind of question. This is the sort of work that evolves over time as life continues to contract and expand and break our hearts and then put us back together all over again. And so thank you for being the people that I've had along the way. These are not, of course, the conversations anybody really wants to have, but we do, you and me and this gorgeous community here. We have so many great episodes coming to you for SEASON TEN. We're going to be talking to tender and wise and funny people about what they've discovered during their before and afters. People like Beth Moore on long faithfulness when life really doesn't work out the way you thought it did. Mary Louise Kelly on empty-nesting and rediscovering yourself after the kids leave. Rabbi Steve Leder on how tragedies teach us and how we can just see beauty somehow. Plus SO MANY MORE. New episodes coming your way every Tuesday this Spring. This episode also includes a conversation between Kate and her producer, Jessica Richie about their new book of blessings, The Lives We Actually Have. *** THE LIVES WE ACTUALLY HAVE: 100 Blessings for Imperfect Days (releases TODAY). I do not imagine that I will settle centuries of debate about just how good we are, except that I believe that it is somewhere between two poles: everything and nothing. Perfection is impossible, but transformation isn't. We can change a bit, if we really want to. This is the choice embedded in every day, the moment we wake up. We will have to find enough momentum to reach for a life that is never perfect, but good enough. Jessica Richie, my executive producer and co-writer and co-dreamer of this podcast, started just SAYING THAT. GOOD ENOUGH. Which made us laugh. So we said it again. Good Enough became a little permission slip for us. A little shrug that takes us off the hook for perfection and reminds us that we are human. Again today. Inside fragile bodies and contingent relationships and a whole web of love. Good Enough: 40ish Devotionals for a Life of Imperfection is available now wherever books are sold. And as a little treat for you, here is an excerpt from the audiobook, read by yours truly. It's a little something my grandpa taught me about what it means to be content… and how contentment might look different for all of us.***Find me on Instagram or Facebook or Twitter.Be sure to subscribe to my weekly email for bits of wisdom, prayers, free downloads, and more.No Cure for Being Human (And Other Truths I Need to Hear) is now available wherever books are sold.
