In fact, our builder told us that Scott, Mary Carol, Jackson and Mary Kathryn were moving in at about the same time as us and  predicted we would get along well and, in the end, he was correct!  Even though Huntsville is now a cosmopolitan area where a lot of folks are from other areas of the country, Scott is a true Huntsville native and his family goes back here for several decades.  Scott  is a close friend and confidant  to many and you'll understand why after you listen to him on this podcast!

How to Deal with Compassion Fatigue with Dr. Mary Kathryn Nader | Women in Ministry

If you've ever felt emotionally drained from caring for others, especially during tough times, this conversation is for you. Mary Kathryn Nader, Ph.D., LPC-S, PMH-C, is a licensed professional counselor in Texas who specializes in women's mental health, including postpartum depression, anxiety, grief, infertility, mom guilt, perfectionism, post-divorce, perinatal mental health, compassion fatigue, imposter syndrome, and more. She explains how compassion fatigue differs from burnout. It's that sense of overwhelm that comes from witnessing others' pain and struggles, and it can take a toll on both your mind and body. During the pandemic, she focused her dissertation research on women clergy, and the response was overwhelming. So many women in ministry opened up about feeling like they simply couldn't give anymore. This conversation isn't just about understanding the problem; it's also about finding hope and practical ways forward. Dr. Nader shares insights from her research and offers heartfelt recommendations for how we can continue to follow our calling to serve others in ministry, friendships, and family life—without losing ourselves in the process. The conversation shifts to imposter syndrome, a challenge more commonly experienced by women than men. Mary Kathryn notes that many women feel unqualified for their roles, a sentiment often rooted in a lack of female role models and societal support, particularly in environments that haven't traditionally embraced female leadership. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing these feelings without letting them take over, focusing on strengths, and seeking support from mentors and peers. Additionally, Dr. Nader highlights the role of faith, reminding women that God is working through them and that they are not alone on their journey. Ultimately, Mary Kathryn serves up a powerful reminder that even in the face of these challenges, support from others, self-compassion, and our faith can guide us toward healing and continued purpose. Seven years ago, Santa Fe Opera started a conversation that would reverberate throughout American Opera, shaping this celebrated art form into something more reflective of the world in which it's created. Today, Opera For All Voices (OFAV) commissions have surpassed even our wildest storytelling expectations.  Key Change co-hosts Andrea Fellows Fineberg and Anna Garcia tuck into the time machine for a season-ending trip around the OFAV universe, revisiting the initiative's greatest hits and offering fans a glimpse at what's to come––with Ruth Nott, consultant, Opera for All Voices; Brent Michael Davids, composer; and Mary Kathryn Nagle J.D., playwright, attorney, and member of Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. OFAV began with a simple premise. "We wanted to see what other voices were available and had interesting stories to tell," Ruth explains. So, how'd we do?  In the past 18 months alone, OFAV has produced two world premieres in Santa Fe, This Little Light Of Mine and Hometown To The World, a groundbreaking workshop in San Francisco for The Pigeon Keeper, and OFAV on Broadway featuring Hometown To The World. We've also strengthened our bond with the Pueblo Opera Cultural Council. While reminiscing is fun, the Key Change time machine is actually a forward-focused intergalactic vehicle. Brent and Mary Kathryn have plotted next season's creative journey from pueblo to cosmos. "It'll be one of the very first operas that centers a Native woman protagonist," hints Mary Kathryn. "We're asking questions that go far beyond Indian country or the history of the relationship between the United States and Native people. We're asking questions that pertain to all of humanity, and what is our relationship to the universe." Catch a ride for Season Five coming soon! Franciscan Spirituality Center920 Market StreetLa Crosse, WI 54601Welcome to the Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin’s, What is Spirituality podcast. Your host, Steve Spilde, is the associate director at the Center. His guests talk about their evolving understanding of God. My name is Steve Spilde, and today I’m meeting with Barb Kruse. Welcome, Barb. Thanks, Steve. Good to be here. We've known each other for about five years. We met before when we were part of the Spiritual Direction Preparation Program and that is a program of the Franciscan Spirituality Center and you were on the staff long before I joined the staff of the FSC. So, could you tell me when you joined the staff of the Center and, what brought you here. Sure. So, I knew about the Center and have been part of Spirituality Center long before I started working on staff and probably I think I began coming to the Center maybe in the ‘90s and looking for spiritual direction. I remember coming to an Enneagram program. I was connected with the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, the FSPA, through my husband, Joe's, work at the hospital so we were connected to the sisters in that way because the sisters were sponsors of the Franciscan or St. Francis at that time, so I know a lot of the sisters. I knew about the Center and just felt the draw to come here. So, I would guess that was probably through than ‘90s that I started coming to the Center again for programs and also spiritual direction. With that came an invitation to think about and consider the Spiritual Direction Preparation Program, and I listened to that invitation and it felt right for me and so I started the program I think it was like in, gosh, 1999 maybe, and then finished the program in 2001 or 2002, somewhere in there. Those are the dates that I was part of the part of the program. So, then that connected me to the Center in an even a greater way, but I did not come to work at the Spirituality Center probably until about maybe in 2007 or 2008, I came on just to work on a Venture Grant that the Center had received from the Franciscan Sisters, from the FSPA, to have a Franciscan fest so we created this festival and I was part of that planning and I did that and then what surfaced from that experience was a part-time position on staff in spiritual direction and then eventually leading into being director of the Spiritual Direction Preparation Program and being here for 10 years after that time, knowing you Steve for half that time. That's a long version of long story. No, it’s all good. You mentioned coming for spiritual direction and being involved in providing spiritual direction. For people who are new to that, how would you describe spiritual direction? There are so many definitions of spiritual direction, probably that the one that would come to mind first and foremost would be spiritual direction as an opportunity to sit in the sacred setting with another person who will listen deeply, compassionately, nonjudgmentally to your deeper story . We hear a lot about each other's stories throughout our days. There's a lot of our story that we keep hidden, and that deeper story is a story that when we do share it, and in a spiritual direction setting, it opens us up to tapping into our truer and authentic self, which I believe is our God self and our spirit self. And with that ability and opportunity to do that we find, at least I found, that I become more connected. This flow of love, of what I would call God, other religions would call it something different, that is always calling me more deeply and to love and have compassion for myself and for the world around me, so spiritual direction can offer that place to understand our belovedness and free us from the wounds of our deeper story and help us be more connected to all of creation, which we already are. We just don't really get it most the time. Do you remember the first time you went to spiritual direction? The first visits? Sure I do. Who was your spiritual director? Sister Mary Kathryn (Fogarty). It was great, and you know the best part about it, and I don’t know, it took maybe a couple visits, but really, to have somebody listen who really cared and didn't, I felt that they weren't waiting for their opportunity to speak about their story because I'm a listener, so I'm always waiting for the other person to share and then my story stops and then I receive what they had to say but she was there just fully listening to me so I felt really heard, and I also didn't take very long for her to help me see the connection between my story and God's story and how my story fits into that. Just that beautiful story of love that I am okay just as I am. Even with my baggage and even with my brokenness. I’m fully loved it, and that that was the most freeing thing for me to have somebody tell me what I intuitively knew which I think we all know that we just, it's locked away. Is that what you expected you would get from her? No, I didn't know what I was going to get, no I just felt that a point in a time in my life probably in my late 40s, mid-40s and raising kids, life was full crazy good that it was so good, but inside I felt that unsettledness in a restlessness and even a simmering anger that I just couldn't quite put my finger on, and I don't know, I think, again, I'm all about paying attention to the invitation, so somewhere along the line I heard a conversation between people or a comment or read something that just invited me to consider spiritual direction as a place to go in and maybe to look at the more deeply into my story. So, you did, you met with her one-on-one for spiritual direction, for how long? Well, you know, on and off several years, I'm sure. The peace that sometimes happens in spiritual direction, but not always, Mary Kathryn being the really astute and attentive spiritual director, she listened to my story for a couple of sessions and then said that it might be a good idea for me to see somebody professionally to unwrap the story a little bit more, So, of course, you know I was like you mean go to what, a therapist, which felt real scary, but I think I was brave enough to know that it was the right thing to step into and again. Yet it was the right thing. So I was seeing Mary Kathryn for spiritual direction and went to see Mary the therapist. I saw her for probably four or five times and I just had a deeper story I needed to tell and I told that story, and she listened and there was a healing that happened in just telling the story. So how is therapy different from spiritual direction? How is what you got with Mary different from Sister Mary Kathryn. I think when you go to therapy that there is always a little more outcome focused. When you go to therapy that, as a therapist, a therapist would feel that responsibility to move the person you know maybe from point A to point B. Oftentimes not considering the spirituality that underlies the whole story. So, I think Mary was able to take my particular story and experience in my life, and offer me some tools and some insights that helped me understand the story a little bit more and again a lot of it's just giving permission, like you're okay, this wasn't your fault, this is what happens, so that was really a freeing and healing thing for me but that wasn't the spiritual piece woven through that. Some therapists will do that. But typically that doesn't happen so spiritual direction is not about getting a person to a specific place because as a spiritual companion or a spiritual director, I will just continue to listen to the story, invite the directee more deeply into their story by asking them feeling question longings, but where is God in the midst of this for you? What do you feel you're being invited to? A little more deeply, the directee can explore their particular experience or story in the context of what God's invitation is for them in. You mentioned when you started seeing Mary Kathryn you were busy as a mom and you got four sons? I do. So that's your current family and then the family you were born into, how big it was your family, where did you fit in? Yeah, the family of origin. There were six of us kids and I was the fourth, and in the way the family happened, there were four of us older kids and then this period of no kids and then two more kids a little bit later on so I'm the youngest of the first of the first four and then there's nine years between myself and my sister and then three years between her and my brother Tom, So I have three older brothers and me and then my sister Marianne and my brother Tom. So even though I was fourth born, I was the first girl. And you were kind of like the youngest child when you grew up. Until I was nine. okay yeah. My dad called me fairy wings, but I really wasn't much of fairy wings. I was a real tomboy, I had these three older brothers. Yeah. So, the family you grew up in, religious, not religious? Yeah, I grew up in a Catholic household. I was born in 1956, so my elementary school years were the during the ‘60s, went to parochial school from second grade to sixth grade in a parochial school and then that was it in the town we lived and so then we went to public school. My mom was born and raised Catholic. My dad was not. He was, I think his family was Lutheran. I don’t know how much they would practice their faith, and then my dad converted to Catholicism, probably in order at that time, to marry my mom. This would be back in the early ‘50s yeah which is once I remember his family could not come, no his brother, nobody could be in the wedding party from his family because they weren’t Catholic and I think his mom didn't even come to the wedding. She was just pretty disappointed about the whole thing. I’ve picked that up over the years, that was a little bit of a sore spot, a sadness. But anyway so Dad was the best Catholic he could be. We went to church every Sunday

Your host, Steve Spilde, is the associate director at the Center. His guests talk about their evolving understanding of God , prayer, healing, and wholeness. Steve: Did people use the term “spirituality” when you were that age.Mary KathrynIf someone had asked you, did that word mean anything? What were some of the meanings that word might've held then?At that time if somebody had said “spirituality”, probably it would've been prayer. That might have been it. Prayer, devotions – that sort of thing. That would've probably been it. There wasn't much of a distinction between spirituality and religion was there? No. No. Religion was considered religion. Or nobody talked about it. And what we learned, even in the classes about becoming a woman religious, even that was a lot about rules and regulations, the doctines and dogmas. We didn’t learn lot about prayer. Our prayer was pretty much rote - out of the book. As you think about how your understanding of spirituality has changed throughout your life, what were some early moments – some important moments when that started to change and evolve?Probably in my mid-30s. It was retreats. I went on my first directed retreat. That was definitely a changing point for me. Now my experience of Christ and God was personal. It was a personal relationship. For someone who has not been on retreat, when you use the term “directed retreat”, what does that look like?I would not use that. We would have to talk about what is a retreat? What do they understand about it? What did your first directed retreat look like? What were the boundaries? It was amazing. I had a Jesuit priest that was giving the retreat. Because we were making the retreat, but then he was also teaching us. Because of course that was also part of it. We would have a class each day on the Ignatian exercises so there were some things that I was really good at. Some things I couldn't figure out. You know just in the whole thing, even in my own prayer time. But there was so much grace and so much gift in the whole thing. Again, it just was my cup of tea. I didn't have to talk to people. So “Directed Retreat”, the standard understanding is that you go away for silence, and then once a day, you meet with a spiritual director. Correct? That's right. That's what I would say. And then you have prayer times, like guided prayer times by the director. So for you that was a fish to water. Oh my! I loved it. It was good. But it sounds like in those periods of silence you had a more direct experience of God. Yes, yes. For sure. I learned about prayer. Like I hadn’t learned a lot about prayer, but I really began to learn about various ways of prayer that was helpful to me. You went through a program to learn how to be a spiritual director for other people and then there was the invitation to create the Franciscan Spirituality Center so you could first train the sisters to do that, right? And eventually open the doors to people. To other people? Yes, yes. So it grew out of the Vatican II, the whole thing grew out of Vatican II and how do we respond to what are the needs now. The group that was there with me, maybe three of us actually continued on and started doing spiritual direction. I don't think the others did.You described that it was really natural for you to be a listener. What were some of the skills you had to refine though, to become better as a spiritual director.Probably learn ways of inviting people to share more in their feelings. And maybe for people that are very verbal, having to slow them down. Learn how to slow them down. Invite them to reflection. And always I had to keep coming back to this, “This is the work between God and that soul. This is not my job.” Always having to remind myself that it's not my job to change them or to save them. To let God directly work with them. From the early days of the spirituality center until now, would you say your understanding of spirituality has evolved? Definitely, but you know, like when I came here, by the time I came to the spirituality center in 1988 I had pretty well figured out religion and spirituality and the difference there. So when I came here a lot of the programs we had were just really geared to spirituality. The sister who was the director before really worked with parishes and so it was more like what today we would call an RCIA type of thing. So it was much more connected to religion. I had pretty much come to an understanding what I thought spirituality was. And it was not religion. It was much broader than that. What are the elements of spirituality in your mind? It is larger than a church and encompassed much more creation and body and Spirit. Community some, but it wasn’t instruction as much as getting in touch with the Spirit, I suppose you could say. And God is present in all of it. It is much more life-giving I think. For the people that came here also, it responded to their desires and needs. If you have any questions about any of the programs that they offer at the Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, we invite you to call us at 608-791-5295. Your host, Steve Spilde, is the associate director at the Center. His guests talk about their evolving understanding of God, prayer, healing, and wholeness. My name is Steve Spilde and today I am joined by Sister Mary Kathryn Fogarty. Welcome Mary Kathryn. Thank you. It is a pleasure to meet with you. I've known you for seven or eight years. I started getting involved here at the Franciscan Spirituality Center and you were on staff as one of the spiritual directors. Let's start by having you describe your understanding of what spiritual direction is. I would say listening. Maybe listening at the heart level, from the heart space. How long have you been doing spiritual direction?I actually started, probably, in the mid-70’s doing spiritual direction. Then I was in leadership for a while and during that time, like eight years, I didn't do spiritual direction.Do you remember the first time you received spiritual direction? Yes it probably was when I made a directed retreat in Prairie du Chien. That was the beginning, after that. What was your expectation of what it was going in - and then maybe - how is it different from what you expected?I don't know that I really had any expectations. I don't think I even knew exactly what I was doing. But I have had good spiritual directors who helped me to share about my life and soul work. Was that challenging for you? Being a spiritual director? Receiving it. Receiving, probably, because I'm not as articulate about things. I’m pretty introverted from that point of view. So they probably had to work harder. Just invite me to reflect on things. It wasn't hard reflecting, but articulating the reflection is often difficult for me.But then you became a spiritual director and really worked at listening to others in a deep way. Was that more natural for you? Yes, by all means, yes. And I would say again, we all come to find our identity, how we are as spiritual directors. I definitely, even in working with the people spiritual direction program, I don't say a lot. When I'm doing spiritual direction, I can wait a long time. Were you comfortable with that from the beginning or did you have to become more comfortable? No, I think from the very beginning I was that way. I would say you know again it was a learning for me. I was definitely more comfortable just listening. But I also had to learn that the work was not mine to do. It was really God's to do. Not getting too anxious about the movements. Have you always been like that? Have you always been a good listener even when you were young? Probably. Um-hmm.The family were born into, can you describe that for me?Okay, we were people of the land because we were a farm family. Very stable family, hard-working, and lots of extended family because my father's side of the family was a large family and they all pretty much lived around where I lived. Which was in Iowa. Yes. West Bend Iowa. We had good neighbors and just really good people. I was surrounded by goodness really and I think we were alike. I come by it naturally. But most of my family is quite quiet. I leave I like to read. My father liked to read. There just wasn't a lot of noise when I was growing up. Then on weekends and during the summer vacations and Christmas vacations I stayed with my grandmother, who at the time would've been probably in her 80s and she was very quiet. Like at the age where I am. She couldn't hear. So why would she want have a conversation? I just loved it because of course I like the quiet. I like to read. She liked to read. How many kids were in your family when you were growing up?There were six of us and I'm the oldest one.Okay.We were spread out because I'd already left home before my youngest sister was born. Six is not that many to be spread out over 18 years. The image I am getting is that your whole family was pretty reserved. The atmosphere was one of introverts.Yeah.Describe your family's relationship with faith. Growing up, oh yeah, very faithful. My parents would've been pillars of the church if you want to use that terminology. My grandmother was the same way. So yeah, very faithful. And of course, when you live on the land, you pray, because everything is so dependent on God for rain and good weather, good crops.Your earliest memories - what was your image of God? That's a good question. I don't know if I had an image of God. But I think it would been around the land. God was probably the weather person in our house. You know, just good weather. Yeah - image of God - I just I don't remember an image. And did you go to parochial school growing up? I did for grade school. In high school we didn't have a parochial school for high school. But my grade school years were at the Catholic school. Eucharist every day as part of our day. And my grandmother was also that way with Eucharist. So, summer vacations, weekends. We went to mass every day. Was that a positive memory? Yes. Positive. Very positive. There again it was quiet, and I suppose ritual. And at that time, it was Latin. I mean we had our prayerbook and we read it in English. What would you call that? I think it's so mysterious. I didn't even understand the language. But you were intrigued by the mystery? I think so. Yeah. I was comfortable with that. When did the thought of becoming a sister enter your consciousness?Probably my junior year of high school. I don't remember in grade school that I thought about it. But the reason I really started thinking about it was because I wanted to be a teacher and the only people I knew that were teachers, not for just a couple of years, but for life, were the sisters. I always say I didn't realize that I would have to love Jesus in this process. I just want to be a teacher. That was what really drew me to religious life. Your sisters when you were young wore the habit.Yes. Until, in the 60s. I think probably mid 60s or a little after that. You wore in the habit for a few years? About 10. And religious life fit me. I came from a family that was so quiet - I fell right into it. I was at home immediately. They were honored by you becoming a sister and you got encouragement with that? In my family? Yeah. I don't know that. Nobody ever really talked about that part of it. We didn't have sisters in our family so they probably didn't even quite know what I was doing. But that would've been typical of us.In that age - when you are like a junior or senior in high school – if someone had asked you why were you becoming a sister? What would have been your answer? I want to be a teacher.Okay. I don't think I even told anybody except my family, my mom and dad. I don't think I told any of my classmates or anything like that so I doubt they even knew I was going. In those days you came here to La Crosse? Yes.And just as other people graduate from high school and they go off to college, from high school you came here. That's right. And in the fall when everybody else is going to college.Did you start at Viterbo college at the same time?Yes. In the fall. And it was an all girls school at that time and most of us were sisters - part of the community. Okay, so of a big portion of the student body were sister. Yes. Yes. I don't know when they opened it up to lay women but there weren't that many lay women in the beginning. But there again, a lot of young women of that age at that time, didn’t go to college either. So at that point in your life, early in college, how did you understand God? Or if I had asked, “What is your image of God?” - How would you describe that? My answer probably would've had something to do with Eucharist and comfort maybe. Maybe at-home. At-homeness. An image – I’m just not sure. I’m not sure I had an image. But a feeling? I would say probably comfort, home. That sense of God. Community. And like I said, not everybody had that experience, but for me, I just loved it. This was great. Did people use the term spirituality when you were that age? No.If someone had asked you - did that word mean anything? And what were some of the meanings that word held? At that time if somebody had said spirituality, it probably would've been prayer. Devotions. That sort of thing. That would have been it. There wasn’t much of a distinction between spirituality and religion was there? No. It was considered religion. Nobody talked about it. And what we learned, even in the classes to become a woman religious - even that was a lot about rules and the regulations. And the doctines and the dogmas. We can learn a lot, even much about prayer. Prayer was pretty much rote and out of the book. As you think about how your understanding of spirituality has changed throughout your life, what were some early moments – some important moments when that started to change and evolve?Probably in my mid-30s. It was retreats. I went on my first directed retreat. Prior to that it was always community retreats – preached retreats. We didn’t have directed retreats. My first directed retreat, that was definitely a changing point for me. Now my experience of Christ and God was personal. It was a personal relationship. That was for sure one of those moments. Then, in the 70’s, maybe six or seven of us, the community asked me to make a 30 day retreat. And the purpose being that we would become spiritual directors and give retreats or spiritual direction. For someone who has not been on retreat, when you use the term “directed retreat”, what does that look like?I would not use that. We would have to talk about what the retreat is going to be. What is a retreat? What do they understand about it? What did your first directed retreat look like? I’ve known Mary-Kathryn for awhile; she and my husband were colleagues at the New World Symphony, a training academy for aspiring orchestral musicians in Miami, Florida. Training to become a professional classical musician is a lifelong pursuit. Mixing motherhood and career has not always been the norm for professional classical musicians. In fact, it’s also only been in the last 50 or 60 years that women have even held jobs in professional orchestras. This is one of the reasons I started this project in the first place. In my classical music training, I saw very few female professionals who also had children. Now with our generation, it’s becoming much more common. Mary-Kathryn Stevens-Toffin is not only a successful violist in a major orchestra, she’s raising two kids with her husband Olivier, and running an Etsy shop on top of it all.

It's safe to say that Mary Kathryn is one of the world's leading experts on how to use chatbot technology for building a business and she has plenty of case studies to prove it.   Mary Kathryn Johnson is the CEO and Founder of Messenger Funnels which helps businesses message their way to sales and ridiculous ROIs. Based out of northern California, Mary Kathryn is leading the way for how we all will be marketing in the not so distant future.   If you are curious about these funny little things we call chatbots, and wonder how they could make a difference to your business or company, you won't want to miss today's show!   Connect with me on social media and use the hashtag #pyp ! Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! In this episode I speak with Mary-Kathryn about her new album Wonders in the Deep. About the Album:  On her fifth album, Wonders in the Deep, Mary-Kathryn blends elements of soft pop, New Age and folk with world music influences as diverse as the continents to create a spiritual amalgam that transcends musical boundaries. Delving deep into the world music realm, Mary-Kathryn paints word pictures on an aural canvas with exotic instrumentation, adroit production, and lyrics that stir the spirit and excite the imagination. But as one Billboard Magazine reviewer so aptly put it, “the most affecting instrument…is Mary-Kathryn's lovely voice.” Throughout her music there are themes that frequently appear including love, peace, faith, prayer, worship and angels. In addition to singing English lyrics, on previous recordings Mary-Kathryn has sung in Hebrew as well as the Sou-Sou language from Benin, West Africa. At times Mary-Kathryn sings “in the spirit” where her vocalizations are either sounds or unknown languages although they variously resemble Mid-Eastern, Gaelic, French or American Indian voices. “As with any language that is sung, you don't have to understand it to enjoy it,” she explains.
