You can't fix healthcare with ideology. We need practical solutions.   Dr. Henry Buchwald (@Dr. Buchwald), believes our healthcare system is upside down! After 60 years as a surgeon and educator, this 90-year-old doctor is doing everything he can to educate people in the USA on why the healthcare system needs them to change it. In this podcast, he discusses what he has seen in his decades of practice and his new book, Healthcare Upside Down. “Healthcare needs to be treated with respect.” - Henry Buchwald   Key Takeaways: Broken Medical Care: According to Dr. Henry Buchwald, the United States medical system is broken. The doctor-patient relationship could be more varied and consistent. Instead, it is almost non-existent. Insurance companies are profiting from people's illnesses. The USA is way behind in statistics overall for our medical care and advancements. It's a business model where doctors are interchangeable, and patient care needs to be improved. Healthcare and Life: Our life from birth involves health care. Growing up and achieving adulthood requires health care. Being able to live a mature life to work, to love, and to have children is dependent on health care. In the final chapter, aging can be made pleasurable by healthcare. Healthcare is, therefore, integral to life from beginning to end. Healthcare is not a commodity but a necessity.  Fraternal Organizations for Healthcare: A not-for-profit member-owned healthcare insurance is one of the best ways to ensure you will be cared for by the company you pay a monthly per diem to. There are many out there, and many more collective organizations starting to pop up due to the need and demand from our underserved population in the USA. Finding our Collective Voice:  Many individuals feel like they need a voice. If people can find a voice together, they will see the power in the collective. This can be done by looking at our immediate environments to see who owns the power structure. Utilizing leaders in our communities and working within organizations like our church or place of work can create a collective voice for the individual.    Sponsors and Promotions:   Momentous Sleep Pack: Momentous Sleep Pack features a 30-day supply of easy-to-use tear-away packs featuring three natural ingredients that prime you for a good night's rest. https://www.livemomentous.com, and use code Divine   Links for Henry Buchwald: Website LinkedIn Health Care Upside Down Book

On episode 435 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Henry Buchwald, a world-renowned surgeon, author, professor, and patient healthcare advocate who contends that it's entirely possible for us to turn our broken healthcare system right-side up to serve the best interests of both patients and clinicians, now and in the future. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Dr. Buchwald focus on the statistics, revelations, and suggestions for positive change outlined in his brilliant and highly readable new book, "Healthcare Upside Down: A Critical Examination of Policy and Practice". Dr. Henry Buchwald grew up in New York City, starting as a six-year-old helping to unload the daily catch of fish on the docks of Sheepshead Bay. After Columbia College, Medical School, and Internship, he served on flying status as the Base Flight Surgeon, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, now part of US Strategic Command, responsible with eleven other commands for strategic deterrence. Subsequently, he completed surgical residency at the University of Minnesota, including research for inaugurating the partial ileal bypass operation to lower cholesterol levels; he was the Principal Investigator for the $65 million dollar Program on the Surgical Control of the Hyperlipidemias Trial that was the first trial to demonstrate that cholesterol lowering decreases atherosclerotic heart disease, prevents heart attacks and peripheral vascular disease, actually regresses coronary artery lesions, and increases life expectancy. Dr. Buchwald stayed at the University of Minnesota for the rest of his career as Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, and the Owen H. and Sally Davidson Wangensteen Chair in Experimental Surgery. In his engineering endeavors, he was responsible for the invention for the first implantable drug infusion pump and the ubiquitous infusion port used by millions annually. He lives on the outskirts of Minneapolis with his wife, Emilie. He spends his private time horseback riding, writing, running, and swimming. The Buchwalds have four daughters, who, with their husbands, for the most part, live close by, enabling Henry and Emilie to enjoy their six grandchildren. Known for his candid reflections on the state of healthcare in the U.S., Dr. Buchwald does not hold back in this revealing discussion. In this episode, Dr. Buchwald shares his candid insights into how the healthcare industry in America has shifted from its earlier patient-centric approach to serving administration objectives. This, he argues, marks a downturn in the quality of care, painting a grim picture of the current healthcare landscape. He contrasts the past and the present, providing a riveting narrative on how healthcare, once an honorable profession committed to patient wellbeing, has now become mired in financial interests. Through his words, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the stark differences between then and now.The conversation also delves into the controversial topic of concierge medicine. Dr. Buchwald elucidates his perspective on the flaws of this model, providing unique insight from his extensive experience in the field. A poignant focus of our discussion revolves around the changing role of Primary Care Physicians (PCPs). As Dr. Buchwald explains, the shift towards PCPs primarily referring patients to other specialists threatens to dissolve the once sacred doctor-patient relationship. Finally, we confront the uncomfortable reality of how economic priorities have marred the healthcare industry in America. In Dr. Buchwald's view, this singular focus on profit-making has eroded the essence of healthcare.Don't miss this powerful conversation that sheds light on the critical issues plaguing the American healthcare system. Welcome to our latest podcast episode, where we engage in a thought-provoking conversation with distinguished guest, Dr. Henry Buchwald. “Healthcare has become an expensive, impersonal system that is not serving the best interest of either the nation or the people it purports to heal.” – Dr. Henry Buchwald. How does one measure good and bad healthcare? A quick look at world health statistics ranks the United States at the highest in total health spending per capita yet last in life expectancy in a group of 15 OECD member nations. Is that the best measure between good and bad?Technology innovations in the U.S. healthcare space are doing their part to improve healthcare outcomes, patient access to care, and health equity. Still, are these solutions enough to fix a system many Americans view as broken?Healthcare Upside Down: A Critical Examination of Policy and Practice is a new book that looks at the U.S. healthcare system and the changes over the past fifty years that led the nation to its current challenges. The author of Healthcare Upside Down is Dr. Henry Buchwald, professor of Surgery at the University of Minnesota. His career in medicine extends beyond those fifty years. He's experienced those changes firsthand. Buchwald spoke with Kevin Stevenson on the I Don't Care podcast and tackled measuring good and inadequate healthcare.“There are about fourteen international statistical measurements of healthcare,” Buchwald said. “I've got fourteen chapters in my book, and in the first, I go over these statistics, and the main statistic is life expectancy. Our life expectancy in the United States is well below every Western country, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. We have a life expectancy of about a third-world country. We have the lowest rating for diseases that could be curable, and all these other nations are all doing much better.”Stevenson and Buchwald's discussion includes the following:Why the U.S.'s life expectancy is lower than so many other Western nationsShifting dynamics in physician/patient careDeterioration of communication between doctors, staff, and patients“If you call a doctor's office today, first of all, you speak to a robot,” Buchwald said. “And the robot gives you another robot after it tells you to call 911 and go away. Eventually, you get a disinterested person who is an interrogator. Where were you born, what do you want, etc.? It takes a long time to speak to anybody.”About Dr. BuchwaldFor 62 years, Henry Buchwald, MD, Ph.D., professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery at The University of Minnesota, has been educating, mentoring, and pioneering breakthroughs within the Department of Surgery, and developing historical advances in metabolic care. Dr. Buchwald has written several notable research publications and is the author of Healthcare Upside Down: A Critical Examination of Policy and Practice.

Four hours northwest of the central city of Melbourne, located in the southeast region of the continent, lies the vast and protected 1.6 million-acre Alpine National Park. Known as the adventure lovers' dream, the park's mountains make up part of what is known as the Great Dividing Range and offer stunning views of towering ridges, lush wildflower valleys, and majestic waterfalls. Plenty of camping, skiing, and hiking can be enjoyed if one is so inclined. However excellent the travel brochure for the Australian Alps may sound, locals understand that the landscape can also be a nightmare for people who are not adequately prepared. Victoria is home to at least four venomous snakes and any number of bees, wasps, ticks, and spiders. So when a local farmer driving to town saw two half-naked, sunburnt people stumble on the road before him, he realized they must have been lost in the park and immediately stopped to help them. The couple, seventeen-year-old Carolynne Watson and twenty-two-year-old Julian Buchwald were taken to Buchan police station. By now you're probably aware there's a new Ant-Man movie on the way in the Marvel Cinematic Universe called Quantumania. In the MCU and other science fiction media, the word "quantum" gets thrown around quite a bit.  Why can you teleport? Quantum physics. Why can you shrink to the size of an atom? Quantum mechanics. Why can you walk through walls or travel the multiverse or bring someone back from the dead? Quantum entanglement. Quantum computing. Quantum. Quantum. Quantum.  At this point the word "quantum" paired with just about any other word is a stand-in for something like "science magic". It's the label slapped on a bit of plot to explain why the protagonist can do the thing. But this type of slapdash explanation isn't relegated to the silver screen.  Films like 'What the BLEEP do we know?' and books like 'The Secret' all maintain that our thoughts affect the world around us. The phrase "thoughts are things" gets bandied about. Oftentimes this is called the "Law of Attraction", or whatever you think about most often tends to show up in your life. These days other buzzwords float around and occupy similar space. Affirmations. Manifestation. And why does any of this work? Quantum physics. Quantum mechanics. Quantum entanglement. Quantum. Quantum. Quantum.  I'm no physicist, but I know enough about marketing to know that the same word cannot possibly mean all of these things at the same time. Or could it? I'm no physicist after all. Perhaps it can? I wanted to ask an expert.  Jed Buchwald studied physics and science history at Princeton University, and earned a PhD from Harvard in 1974. He taught at the University of Toronto for two decades, where he spent a year as the director of that university's Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology. Buchwald then became the director of the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology and the Bern Dibner Professor of the History of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining Caltech in 2001. He has authored or co-authored six books in the history of science and, more recently, on the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphics. He edits or co-edits three book series for Springer, one for MIT, and two journals. Buchwald is a member of the American Philosophical Society, a member of the International Academy of the History of Science, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also a MacArthur Fellow (1995) and a Killam Fellow (1990–1991). One was an aggressive, no-holds-barred television interviewer. One was a newspaper columnist, who employed gentle satire to swipe at the rich and the powerful.  Mike Wallace and Art Buchwald were leading media figures for fifty-plus years: Wallace as the co-host of "60 Minutes", Buchwald as the Washington Post humorist whose column was syndicated to over 500 newspapers. They went after the truth in very different ways, but they were the best of friends.  They jokingly called themselves "The Blues Brothers" because they helped each other get through serious bouts of depression. Mike Wallace and Art Buchwald talk here about their childhoods (both were first-generation Americans) and share stories of the tragedies in their lives. They also describe how they got into the news business. No doubt you'll be amused to hear Wallace in the early days of radio, reading an ad for Mars Candy Bars!

Julian and Carolynne had been dating for 2 years, and planned to have a picnic on the 1200 acre property that Julian's mom owned in Budgeree, Australia. They were having a great time by the casual, yet natural, 10 foot waterfall at the end of one of the trails. They were supposed to be home in a couple of hours, and wanting to be on time, they packed up and headed out. On the way back, Julian was looking for some roadkill that he saw on the way in so that he could get a closer look at what it was. He stopped at the end of the road, asking Carolynne if it was ok if he went to look. She agreed as long as he came back quickly. Julian was gone for 5 minutes, then 10, as Carolyn started to worry about what had happened. Right before she was about to get out of the car, she saw a man dressed in all black sprinting toward the car in her rearview mirror.
