When does refusing to repeat a lie become complicity in it?The hardest question in documentary filmmaking is not how to find the truth. It is how to handle a lie. When a false story is already loose in the world, you have two choices that look almost identical on the page: refuse to repeat it, or amplify it by debunking it. The discipline of knowing which is which can decide whether your film tells the truth or makes the lie stronger. In this Deep Dive on Documentary First Episode 279 with Brian Pocrass, host Christian Taylor digs into the question Brian asked on tape about how much oxygen you give a lie. The conversation took thirty minutes to arrive there, but the question turns out to be the spine of every documentary that touches a contested story. This episode traces that question through C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters, Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life under the Nazi regime, Alexander Solzhenitsyn's 1974 essay Live Not By Lies, and a two thousand year old paradox in the book of Proverbs. The spine of the episode is Brian's question on tape: "The question is, how much oxygen do you give it?" That question runs straight into a paradox the rabbis of the Talmud spent centuries arguing over. Proverbs 26:4 says do not answer a fool according to his folly. Proverbs 26:5, the very next verse, says answer a fool according to his folly. The Talmudic resolution maps directly onto the filmmaker's dilemma: the stakes determine the answer. Christian closes the episode with her own test, drawn from her film The Girl Who Wore Freedom: the story of Michel de Vallavieille, the French farmer shot in the back by an American paratrooper on D-Day, and the famous Band of Brothers rumor she refused to put on screen. In this episode, Christian explores:Why every production company wanted Brian Pocrass to tell a different version of Heather O'Rourke's story than the one he ended up makingThe C.S. Lewis principle from The Screwtape Letters that the devil cares more about attention than beliefHow debunking a conspiracy theory can give the conspiracy a brand new piece of footage to point atDietrich Bonhoeffer's argument that silence in the face of evil is itself evilAlexander Solzhenitsyn's 1974 essay Live Not By Lies and the moral discipline of refusalThe two thousand year old paradox in Proverbs 26:4-5 and how the Talmudic rabbis resolved itWhy the Talmud's answer is sacred versus mundane stakes, and what that means for documentary filmmakersThe Michel de Vallavieille story from Christian's film The Girl Who Wore FreedomThe Band of Brothers rumor about Bill Guarnere that Christian refused to put on screenThe two questions every documentary filmmaker has to weigh before they amplify a storyChapters0:00 C.S. Repeating a false claim in order to refute it gives the claim attention, repeats the language, and trains the algorithm to surface it more. Britannica describes this dynamic as adding oxygen to the fire of misinformation. For documentary filmmakers, this means a debunking film about a conspiracy theory can leave viewers more familiar with the conspiracy than with the truth. What did Dietrich Bonhoeffer say about silence?Bonhoeffer's most famous line on the subject is silence in the face of evil is itself evil; not to speak is to speak; not to act is to act. Bonhoeffer was a German pastor in the 1930s who watched the German church surrender to the Nazi regime. He spent his adult life arguing against the silence of fellow pastors. The Nazis executed him in April 1945. His writings on costly discipleship remain among the most cited works of twentieth century theology. What is Alexander Solzhenitsyn's Live Not By Lies about?Live Not By Lies is the essay Solzhenitsyn released on the day the KGB arrested and deported him in 1974. He argues that while a single person cannot stop a lie from being told, every person can refuse to repeat it. The refusal itself is the action. The essay is one of the foundational moral texts of the dissident movement against Soviet totalitarianism and remains widely cited in discussions of personal moral resistance. How do the rabbis of the Talmud resolve Proverbs 26:4 and 26:5?Proverbs 26:4 says do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself. Proverbs 26:5 says answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. The Talmudic resolution is that the two verses apply to different kinds of stakes. When the fool is talking about something sacred, you answer. When the fool is talking about something mundane, you do not. The wisdom is in knowing which kind of stakes you are facing. How do documentary filmmakers handle conspiracy theories about their subjects? There is no industry standard. Each filmmaker has to weigh the specific story. Some choose to confront the conspiracy directly and risk amplifying it. Others refuse to give the conspiracy screen time and risk being accused of avoidance. The discipline is to ask what the documentary makes more solid in the world and who the actual audience is: the people who already believe the lie, or the people who deserve the truth.About the Source EpisodeDocumentary First Episode 279 with Brian Pocrass aired on June 9, 2026. Was the Poltergeist curse real, or did the world get Heather O'Rourke's story wrong for 38 Years? On February 1, 1988, Heather O'Rourke died at twelve years old. For nearly four decades the world has filled that silence with rumors. She Was Here, the new documentary produced by Brian Pocrass and directed by Nick Bailey, is the first authorized account of what actually happened, told by Heather's mother Kathleen, her sister Tammy, and the people who knew and worked with her.In Episode 279, Christian sits down with producer Brian Pocrass to talk about how She Was Here came together, what it cost to earn the trust of a grieving family that had been burned by Hollywood for nearly four decades, and why he believes Heather's death was completely preventable. Brian is a USC Film School graduate with fifteen years in the entertainment industry who later became an attorney. He calls this his first documentary. At the heart of She Was Here is a question Brian poses to himself as a producer: how much oxygen do you give a lie? Heather's death from a misdiagnosed intestinal condition, treated as Crohn's disease, became, in the tabloid press of the late 1980s, the foundation of what came to be called the Poltergeist curse. Brian's film is a working filmmaker's answer to that question, anchored in legal depositions, family archives, and the testimony of the people who loved her. It is also, as he tells Christian, a film about loss.IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:Why Heather O'Rourke's family broke nearly four decades of silence to participate in She Was HereHow a misdiagnosis took Heather's life at twelve, and what her mother wants every parent to know about medical decisionsHow the Poltergeist curse rumor started, and why Heather's family is finally telling the real storyWhat it actually takes to earn the trust of a grieving family that has been burned by Hollywood for thirty-eight yearsWhy Brian Pocrass, a USC Film School graduate, returned to filmmaking after a fifteen-year career and a transition to lawHow Brian used his legal background to read sealed depositions from the 1991 lawsuit and uncover the real storyWhy directors like Gary Sherman and stars like Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams broke their "Heather Shield" silence for this filmThe first-hand account of the Poltergeist III set explosion in Chicago, told by an eyewitness who was thereHow Brian defines the "illusion of documentary filmmaking" and the rhythm that holds a non-fiction story togetherThe Steven Spielberg interview Brian could not get, and why he is willing to talk about it publiclyThe documentary Brian could not stop thinking about, his DocuView Déjà Vu pickCHAPTERS00:00 Her Death Was Completely Preventable: The Heart of She Was Here00:29 Welcome to Documentary First with Christian Taylor00:52 Meet Brian Pocrass: USC Film School Grad and She Was Here Producer02:25 The Childhood Crush That Fueled a Documentary07:11 The Tipping Point: Why Brian Made the Film09:48 Earning the O'Rourke Family's Trust After an Initial No12:40 The Full Circle Moment: Setting Heather Free14:52 Did Heather's Mom and Sister Feel Heard15:27 Craig T. The cause was septic shock from an acute bowel obstruction, ultimately traced to a congenital intestinal abnormality that had been misdiagnosed as Crohn's disease. The misdiagnosis is the central tragedy of She Was Here — producer Brian Pocrass calls her death "completely preventable" with the correct diagnosis and a simple surgery. The film's authorized account ends decades of conspiracy speculation about her death. Is the Poltergeist curse real? The "Poltergeist curse" is a tabloid-era rumor that grew from the deaths of four Poltergeist trilogy cast members across the 1980s. Heather O'Rourke's family, who appear throughout She Was Here, reject the curse narrative as a painful misrepresentation of their daughter and sister. The documentary presents the authorized medical and legal record: Heather's death was a misdiagnosed congenital condition, not a curse.Where can I watch the Heather O'Rourke documentary? She Was Here is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. This week on End Credits, we've got true Hollywood stories! For the first half of the show, we will talk about our thoughts fresh from watching this year's Academy Awards and what we think of the winners and losers. For the review, we will tune in to AppleTV to check out a documentary about a young actress, which comes, in part, from a Guelph filmmaker. This Wednesday, March 18, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Peter Salmon will discuss: One Oscar After Another. The awards season showdown between One Battle After Another and Sinners practically ended in a draw; OBAA got Best Picture, Best Director and four other trophies while Sinners scored Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay plus two more. There was a rare tie in the Best Short Film category, Frankenstein and KPop Demon Hunters got some love, and Baby Yoda put in a cameo mid-ceremony. We will recap those, and other highlights, from 98th Oscars! REVIEW: She Was Here (2026). Heather O'Rourke starred in three Poltergeist movies over the 1980s, but before finishing the third entry she suddenly passed away due to medical complications. It's hard when a young person dies, but Heather's death became ground zero for the "Poltergeist curse", the long-standing belief about how the series, and its stars, were seemingly besieged by tragedy. But in the new documentary She Was Here, director Nick Bailey focuses on the girl, and peels away the rumour to talk about a young and promising life that ended too soon. End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

So thinking about encouraging a bit of biodiversity into the garden, or it's thinking about growing some edibles and reducing your food miles. It's just encouraging everybody to have a go".Tremlett says: "We aim through our show gardens here and through our exhibits to relate very much to take home ideas, what's achievable, and the things that people really can grow, do and grow in their own gardens...the whole show and its background going back a long, long time is about the fundamentals of gardening and we very proudly stick to those principles."Sweet brings a long pedigree in garden shows having run events with the RHS Chelsea, Hampton Court, Tatton Park, Cardiff and Scotland's National Gardening Show. After enjoying the 2025 Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year, he said: "it certainly warms the cockles of your heart when you see the expertise of some of the growers and what they've been able to achieve". On the podcast he reminisces about the impact he had on Chelsea during his tenure."There's so many aspects of Chelsea that I feel there's a little Bob Sweet stamp on when I go around...there's lots of little hints of my career left behind there which I'm very proud of" from the names of the various routes through the show to fundamental changes to the way awards were judged. He also lifts the lid on some of the more light-hearted aspects of the show and the mischief-makers he has had to contend with over the years. Hosted on Acast. Plants in the wild rarely grow in isolation – from the fungal network beneath the soil to the layers of the jungle canopy, plants rely on their neighbours to form dynamic communities. And the same is true in your own garden – just think about growing leeks besides carrots to deter carrot fly. But how this companiable growing system really works and how you can use it to your own advantage can seem a bit of a mystery. Here to help demystify the concept is plantsman, author, designer and TV presenter Nick Bailey. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Making a garden that looks good for a few short weeks in summer, is relatively easy. But making a garden that looks good, and is an enjoyable place to spend time, all year round, is much more of a challenge. And that challenge is made even harder in a small garden, where finding space for all the summer-flowering plants we love is hard enough, let alone fitting in plants for winter interest. Plantsman, garden designer and Gardeners' World presenter Nick Bailey shares his tips for creating a garden that looks good all year round, no matter what size your space. Real estate agents had it made over the past two years. When mortgage rates were low, buyers lined up to make bids, sellers were ready to upgrade, and properties were flying off the shelves. For almost any agent in any market, business was booming, and it seemed like it wouldn't ever stop. Then mortgage rates began to rise, monthly payments became dangerously unaffordable, and the agents looking for easy commissions disappeared. But what if an industry expert told you there was still hope to help buy and sell homes? Nick Bailey, President and CEO at RE/MAX, has been in the real estate business since he was a teenager. After buying the building his local pizza shop operated in, Nick went on to house hack in college, building an impressive career at not only RE/MAX but Century 21 and Zillow. He understands the agent business better than anyone and wants YOU to know the secrets to success. In today's episode, Nick touches on the shocking statistic that most real estate agents fail, why average agents are struggling in today's market, how homebuyers can get around today's high fixed interest rates, and the one thing you NEED if you want to take home consistent commission checks. In This Episode We Cover: Fixed-rate vs. adjustable-rate mortgages and new loan products that put buyers in a better position Market trends and why fix and flippers are becoming (temporary) rental property owners Why most real estate agents fail (and the steps to success that top agents follow) How to find a great agent, whether you're a first-time home buyer or investor Niching down and why modern agents will FAIL if they can't find their focus Why agents MUST do more than sell real estate to build wealth And So Much More! As a freshman college radio DJ at Villanova University I came across an album by a new band called Over It. They fit right into my wheelhouse at the time and their music became a staple on my radio show on WXVU. The song '80's Movie Antihero' became one of our 'greatest hits' over my four year career. I continued to follow the guys in Over It, even booking them to play a show at Villanova. A show where they opened up for Tiffany. Yes, that Tiffany. As time went on, the band dissipated and some of the guys started a new project called Runner Runner. When that wrapped up, Nick Bailey discovered that he could make a career out of his love of songwriting. That leads us to today's conversation. I caught up with Nick for the first time in probably about 10 years, if not more. We talked a bit about Over It, Runner Runner and what the transition to songwriting has been like. I also ask if we'll ever be blessed with an Over It reunion.I hope you enjoy the conversation with Nick Bailey.

Would you default to "Yes," even when the path forward is not traveled by anyone your age? Our guest for today's episode of Real Estate Sessions quite did. Meet Nick Bailey, the CEO and President of REMAX LLC., who started his real estate career at 18. As a licensed realtor of 26 years (beginning at 21), Nick reveals his professional journey, how he's adapted to changing times, and the timeless lessons to undefeatable and consistent success in the industry.Nick attributes a large portion of his success to the people he gets to be around. He bought his first property right after high school, locking his first brokerage partnership with the best broker in his area (in just 90 days of getting licensed). Nick established his empire, and his journey has significantly grown from the connections he made. In this episode, he gets into the tiny secrets that have helped him in the journey: including predicting the state of the market at any point (even the pandemic), building a consistent profile despite the fluctuations, doing the statistics, to embracing changes coming about, like the massive adoption of tech for business success. Speaking of the boom of AI and ML and addressing concerns about whether tech would replace real estate agents, Nick shares why they can't be replaced as long as agents are industry-ready and tech-updated. About the "sudden" boom of IT even in real estate, Nick would add, "The technology wasn't new pre-pandemic; it's just the fact that 99% of agents have never used it. And so for those of us that had used it in working in remote jobs and tech companies, we were very comfortable.." Staying low in the learning curve is always what leads to failure. Nick also has a ton of advice for fresh agents foraying into real estate – do not forget to tune in!Success clues from today's episode:● Surround yourself with great people to succeed in real estate. That's where actual knowledge comes from.● Any successful agent must know the friction point of their business. And then work on reducing them.● Be informed to be ahead. If you think tech is a disrupter and decide not to adapt, it could prevent your business from growing. Instead, welcome the change and stay ahead of your competition. Meet The Guest! August 14, 1967. Off the coast of England, a group of pirate ships has been fighting to stay afloat. These are pirates of a particular kind—less sword fighting and treasure hunting, more spinning records and dancing late into the night. For the past few years, these boats have made it their mission to broadcast popular music from international waters. But at the stroke of midnight, a new law will make these pirate radio DJs criminals. Some of them, aboard Radio Caroline, are willing to risk it. How did a group of young rebels launch an offshore radio station that gave the BBC a run for its money? And how did they change the course of music history?Special thanks to our guests, former Caroline pirates Nick Bailey, Gordon Cruse, Roger Gale, Patrick Hammerton, Keith Hampshire, Dermot Hoy, Colin Nichol, Paul Noble, Ian Ross, Chris Sandford, and Steve Young.
