Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin will be the three names on the ballot paper for next month's Presidential election. The election will take place on Friday, the 24th of October. Maria Steen had hoped to be the fourth name in the race, but the conservative campaigner had received just 18 of the 20 required nominations from TDs and senators by the time the deadline passed, at midday on Wednesday. Independent Ireland's calling for a referendum to change the Presidential nomination system, following Maria Steen's failure to secure the support of 20 Oireachtas members to appear on the ballot paper. Figures provided to Bodyke Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney show that average waiting times for Category B car test invitations increased at all three driving test centres in Clare between June 2024 and June of this year. In Ennis, waiting times rose from 14 weeks to 21 weeks. In Shannon, the average increased from 12 weeks to 17 weeks. In Kilrush, it went from 13 weeks to 14 weeks. A total of 600 driving tests were carried out across the county during this period, which means an additional 469 tests could have been carried out on missed operating days. Fresh calls are being made for investment in housing as businesses expand. The latest survey from the France Ireland Chamber of Commerce reveals 73 per cent of Franco-Irish firms see growth potential, but are frustrated over housing shortages and delayed infrastructure. The Chamber's survey shows skills shortages and geopolitical uncertainty also pose a challenge. Meanwhile, analysis of the power network shows that half the country's electricity substations have little or no capacity to connect new housing or other developments. The concern over capacity follows the news that 80 families have been left waiting months to move into their new homes in Portlaoise, Co Laois, with many now facing eviction from rental properties and loss of mortgage approval. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by, Joe Cooney, Bodyke Fine Gael TD and Mark Nolan, Shannon Chamber President.

The Tobin Report, which is designed to overcome an impasse and determine a future management structure for the Cliffs of Moher, has recommended that Clare County Council buy the necessary land from over 30 landowners to go on and bring the trail up to standard. The Southern coastal walking trail and 500m section of the Northern route remain closed as significant safety works are required on the trail. The Tobin report also estimates it would cost the local authority over €460K to manage the trail and has recommended Compulsory Purchase Orders of land as a last resort. None of this is binding however, there will undoubtedly be several meetings with the council, Fáilte Ireland, Clare Local Development Company and Clare IFA ahead. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Parteen-based Clare IFA representative, Tom Lane and Joe Cooney, Bodyke Fine Gael TD. Photo (c) Visit Clare

The Dáil has been told that a 92-year-old Clare woman has been without mobile reception or landline connectivity for almost five weeks following Storm Éowyn. Fine Gael's Joe Cooney has used his maiden speech in Leinster House to call for "less talk and more action" when it comes to futureproofing against extreme weather events. The Bodyke TD has proposed reviewing setback distances between trees and power lines, fast-tracking felling licenses for landowners, better resourcing the forestry service and allowing telecom companies to cut down trees when landowners fail to do so. Addressing Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Micheal Healy-Rae, Deputy Cooney says people in rural Clare can't be left stranded.

The cold snap has just about passed, with a yellow weather alert for low temperature/ice in place for Clare and the rest of the country expiring at noon today. The cold weather has seen countless services impacted throughout Ireland, with school closures in counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny and Laois. Snowfall last weekend saw train and bus services in Clare cancelled or delayed, while water and electricity outages were experienced right across the county due to subzero temperatures. With this level of disruption to our lives caused by the bitterly cold conditions, the question must be asked, does Ireland need to be better prepared for extreme weather conditions?
