Christmas Past
Backstory: Wren Day

Christmas Past

The small, unassuming wren may be nothing much to look at, but wait till it starts singing. Its loud, complex songs, and its tendency to sing them throughout winter, has earned it the title of “King of Birds.” But on December 26, the king is dead. Wren Day is a traditional hunting of the wren, followed by celebrations that include disguise, door-to-door visiting and parading, and song. It's certainly one of our most strange and mysterious Christmas customs, a mixture of Celtic mythology, old Christmas traditions, and revenge for giving away secrets. Tiernan Gaffney from the National Museum of Ireland joins Brian to tell the story. Special thanks to Lewis Barfoot for permission to include her beautiful rendition of The Wren Song!Music in this episode"Calm Lullaby for Irish Harp" — Mountain Dweller, via Pixabay"Greensleeves" — Julius H., via Pixabay"Hark! Kilve beach is edged by sheer cliffs and is made of rocks. Mostly small ones the size of oranges, up to medium sized ones the size of sofa cushions. To cross over them is unstable and you have to move like a penguin, which must be fun to watch if you aren't the one trying to stay upright. Jutting up between the smaller rocks are huge mattress sized boulders that are either massive flat topped rocks of unimaginable weight, or maybe if you could look below have no underside at all because they are the exposed surface of the Earth's crust. They make excellent resting points where you can temporarily stop from awkward walking and admire the amazing view. Having progressed some way along the beach we reached a smooth ridge of rock that ran for a long stretch perpendicular to the sea. It afforded us a path to walk on for a while. Either side of the ridge pools of stranded seawater had gathered beside piles of tangled seaweed. The atmosphere at this point had softened considerably, and there was in addition to being able to hear the sea a kind of silence too, immediately around us, so pure you could hear tiny bubbles popping in the rock pools.  It had something to do  with the rock cliffs of Kilve. They were doing something interesting. Cupping and reflecting sound, acting like the back wall of a theatre. Ahead the shoreline, though only about fifty yards away, was below the sound horizon owing to a very steep rake on the beach. This has the effect of mellowing the breaking waves, emphasising the weight of the waves rather than the brightness of the turbulent water. Occasionally a seventh wave breaks over a rocky outcrop directly centre of scene sending a plume of foaming suds high into the air and for a few moments above the sound horizon.  * Far left of scene you can sometimes hear children playing on the beach with their dad, maybe looking for fossils. Some hardy birds that make a peeping call swoop around too. As the episode opens a tiny microlight aeroplane crosses the sky from left to right, going almost directly overhead. For some reason we love this sound, it seems to reflect that free feeling you get on a wide open beach. You may notice the tide is very gradually coming in over the episode, yielding more splashes and watery details from the breaking waves as time progresses.

Are you bracing yourself for the teen years? Buckle up, because John Morales and Sarah Tafoya sat down with Danielle Bean on Morning Air to talk about the ups and downs of raising teens. Danielle, mom of eight kids (yes, eight!), dropped some serious wisdom on surviving these years without losing your mind—or your faith.   Here's the scoop:   Teens = Big Attitudes Danielle doesn't sugarcoat it; teens definitely develop an attitude (or two!). But instead of seeing it as terrifying, she reframes it: it's a sign of growth! Teens are figuring out who they are, which is awkward for everyone. As parents, it's our job to support them as they grow.   How to Break Through the Silence We all know the "How was school?" conversation that ends with a one-word answer: "Fine."  Danielle recommends getting creative with your questions.   Try:   "What was the best part of your day?" "Who's your closest friend and why?" When all else fails, do something active with them: playing sports, cooking, or even a project can get the conversation flowing when sitting face-to-face feels too intense. Pray, Pray, and Pray Some More Feeling like you're losing control? That's where prayer comes in. Danielle urges parents to be “prayer warriors” for their teens. You can't control everything they face, but you can entrust them to God and their guardian angels. Seriously, praying for your teen's angel is a game-changer, especially when you can't be there in person.   Balance Freedom and Rules Yes, teens need space. Yes, they need boundaries. It's a dance, like when John shared how he and his son hit the batting cages together, mixing fun with father-son bonding. Or when it comes to screens and phones, Danielle says delay it as long as possible. Teens might push back, but that's okay! "If your teen is happy with all your rules, you might be doing something wrong," she jokes (but also… she's kinda serious!).   Final words of wisdom: Don't freak out! God handpicked you to be the parent of your teen. Lean into His grace, keep praying, and remember: you're shaping them into the person God wants them to be. You've got this!

So, are you thinking about retiring? You're definitely not alone! On today's Morning Air, John Morales had a really interesting chat with Harry Kraemer—former CEO of Baxter and all-around wise guy—about when it's the right time to retire. Spoiler alert: it's not as simple as hitting a certain age!   Harry pointed out that with people living longer these days, deciding when to retire has gotten a bit trickier. Back in the day, the average lifespan was around 65, so retiring made sense. But now, you might live into your 80s or 90s, which means you could be retired for more years than you actually worked!    The big takeaway? Plan ahead! Harry emphasized that it's super important to think about what you want to do in retirement. Don't just stop working one day and expect everything to fall into place. Whether it's volunteering, getting more involved in your church, or even writing that novel, you've got to have a plan.   And remember, retirement doesn't mean retiring from life! You can stay active, contribute to your community, and keep that sense of purpose going strong. So, before you decide to clock out for good, take some time to pray, reflect, and really think about what God might be calling you to do with the next chapter of your life.    As Harry likes to say, "life's not a sprint—it's a marathon."  So, pace yourself, plan wisely, and enjoy the ride!

John Morales had an incredible conversation with Theresa Civantos Barber, the assistant editor for Aleteia, on the latest Morning Air podcast. They looked into the amazing journey of American swimmer Katie Ledecky, and trust us, it's a story you don't want to miss.    So, the Paris Summer Olympics had its fair share of drama because of the Opening Ceremony, but one athlete who truly stole the spotlight was Katie Ledecky.  She snagged four medals in Paris, including two golds, bringing her total to 14 Olympic medals! That makes her the most decorated American woman in Olympic history. Can you believe that?    But here's the thing—Katie's not just a powerhouse in the pool. She's got this incredible humble spirit and an unwavering Catholic faith that sets her apart from everyone else. Barber shared how Ledecky's humility and gratitude are what really make her shine. She's not one to brag; her high school teachers didn't even know she was Olympic bound until they saw it in the news. How wild is that?    Katie finds her calm and focus through prayer, especially the Hail Mary, which she says before every race. Imagine that—right before diving in, she's connecting with her faith.    Faith in Action   Katie's faith isn't just something she keeps to herself; she lives it out loud. She's a rockstar volunteer, serving meals to the homeless, leading campus ministry, and helping out in her family's parish.    Her virtues—perseverance, dedication, generosity, and humility—are not just words. They're a way of life. Katie's a role model for all of us, showing that you can be both an incredible athlete and a genuinely kind person.    Inspiring the Next Generation   Barber shared a sweet story about how her own kids are inspired by Katie. They've started incorporating prayer into their sports routines, just like Katie does. Her son, for instance, prayed the Hail Mary before his game because he was nervous. It's amazing to see how Katie's faith and dedication resonate with young athletes.    John mentions that Katie Ledecky's story is a shining example of how sports can be a school of virtue, echoing Pope St. John Paul II's sentiment that we can all be athletes for Christ.    Final Thoughts   Katie Ledecky's journey reminds us that true greatness isn't just in medals but in character. Her story is a beautiful example of how faith can anchor us, guide us, and inspire us to be better.    So, if you're looking for a role model who perfectly balances excellence with humility and competition with faith, Katie Ledecky is your girl.

Are the Olympics Still Worth Watching? (Special Podcast Highlight)

Morning Air

In this podcast episode of Morning Air, John Morales tackles a big question: are sports, especially the Olympics, still worth our time? Joining the conversation is Dr. Bill Thierfelder, president of Belmont Abbey College and a former Olympian, live from Charlotte, North Carolina.   Sports and Virtue: A Perfect Match?    St. Pope St. John Paul II loved sports. He saw them as a "school of virtue" and a gift from God. So could the Olympics, with their virtuous roots, still be a great example of excellence and faith today, in spite of all the blasphemy we saw in the Opening Ceremony?   The Controversy: Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony    Dr. Thierfelder talks about the Vatican's reaction to the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, which mocked the Last Supper. This outrageous act left you feeling hurt and angry, and that's totally understandable. Dr. Thierfelder argues that it shouldn't take away from the athletes' hard work and dedication, though.    A Peek into Olympic History    Did you know the Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Swifter, Higher, Stronger) was inspired by a Catholic priest, Fr. Henri Didon? Dr. Thierfelder shares this neat tidbit, showing how the Olympic spirit is all about lifting humanity and reflecting our God-given potential.   Athletes as Faith Role Models    Despite the controversy, athletes like Katie Ledecky set positive examples. Ledecky, a devout Catholic, prays the Hail Mary before every swim. Isn't that amazing?   Listener Reactions    Listeners Tracy and Mike call in to share their thoughts. They've decided to boycott the Olympics in protest. Dr. Thierfelder respects their decision but also talks about the importance of recognizing the good in sports and suggests writing letters to Olympic organizers to voice concerns constructively.    Final Thoughts: Be Athletes for Christ    Dr. Thierfelder wraps up by encouraging Catholics to stay engaged in the world and embody virtues in everything they do, just like Olympic athletes. He calls for action beyond personal boycotts, advocating for public efforts to uphold respect and virtue everywhere.   So, while there are good reasons to question the current state of the Olympics, Dr. Thierfelder believes that focusing on the athletes' virtuous efforts and speaking out can help keep the spirit of the Olympic Games alive. Let's keep our eyes on higher things and remember, as St. Pope St. John Paul II taught, we can all be athletes for Christ.    How do you feel about this? Have you decided to boycott the Olympic Games?

In a recent episode of Morning Air, John Morales explores the topic of transgender surgeries for minors, featuring invaluable insights from Mary Rice Hasson, an attorney and fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. They talk about the controversial practices at Boston Children's Hospital and the lies of gender-affirming care.   The Issue at Hand: Boston Children's Hospital has been under scrutiny for performing sex-change surgeries on minors, despite media claims to the contrary. Publicly available documents confirm that procedures such as gender-affirming hysterectomies are indeed being performed on children.    Mary Rice Hasson's Perspective: Mary Rice Hasson highlights the underlying problem: the belief that gender identity can and should be altered to match a person's feelings, rather than accepting the biological reality of being male or female. Simply because you feel a certain way doesn't mean you are that way. Our culture puts way too much emphasis on feelings, and not enough on realty.    The Bigger Picture: This issue has gained momentum over the past decade, with the Biden administration pushing gender identity policies in schools and healthcare. Don't lose hope thinking you're alone in promoting the truth, though. You should be encouraged to know that many people are taking a stand, especially Catholics.    Key Points from the Discussion:   Medical and Ethical Concerns:   Many hospitals, including Boston Children's, perform irreversible surgeries on minors, often leading to sterilization.   These practices are criticized as exploiting vulnerable young people for profit, without addressing underlying mental health issues. These hospitals are in it for themselves, not for your children.    Cultural Impact:   The propagation of gender identity ideology has led to increased confusion and pressure on children and parents.   Mary Rice Hasson says that true affirmation should be based on accepting one's biological sex as a gift from God, rather than altering the body.   Parental Challenges:   Parents often face emotional blackmail, being told their child's life depends on transitioning. They face so much pressure to go along with what their kids want because they're afraid their children will do something drastic to harm themselves.   There is a critical need for parents to have open, honest conversations with their children about their feelings and the reality of their bodies.   Final Thoughts:   Mary Rice Hasson encourages Catholics and all people to speak up against these practices and to educate themselves and others about the truth of human sexuality. Emphasizing the teachings of the Church, she calls for a return to recognizing the inherent dignity and unchangeable nature of being created male or female.    Let's keep this conversation going and ensure that the truth about our human identity is upheld and protected.

If you're praying for your children to come back to the faith, never stop! Who knows... they could one day become a priest!   On a recent Morning Air podcast, John Morales had a chat with Fr. Mac Hill, sharing his inspiring conversion story. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Fr. Mac grew up in a solid Catholic family but veered off course during his high school and college days.   High School & College:   Fr. Mac was your typical high school jock, more into his reputation and partying than his faith.   He went to the University of Florida, diving headfirst into the college party scene. But instead of fun, it left him feeling empty and lost.   The Wake-Up Call:   Things hit rock bottom the night before spring break when he was drunk and crashed his truck, which ended him in jail.   In his cell, he had a massive epiphany, realizing he was on a dangerous path and desperately reached out to God.   Reconnecting with Faith:   A twist of fate: just before his arrest, an old classmate invited him to a Bible study. After his release, he went and discovered a group of passionate, faith-filled college students.   This kickstarted his journey back to faith, with a heartfelt confession and a deep experience of God's mercy, "turning his shame into a hunger for the Eucharist."   The Big Decision:   Initially, Fr. Mac brushed off thoughts of becoming a priest, even dating his "dream girl" while figuring things out.   But through prayer and a consecration to Jesus through Mary, he found peace and clarity about his calling.   He entered St. John Vianney College Seminary in 2014 and was ordained on May 15, 2021.     Life as Fr. Mac:   Now, he's the parochial vicar at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, loving every day as a new adventure with the Lord, full of joy and peace.   Fr. Mac's journey from wild party nights to a devoted priest shows just how powerful God's grace can be. It's a reminder that no matter how far we stray, it's never too late to turn back and find true peace and purpose.

"Morning Air" delved into the harrowing aftermath of the Kansas City shooting that erupted amidst Super Bowl victory festivities.  This unexpected turn from euphoria to despair, following a dispute that ended in gunfire, has left many searching for answers and solace. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves' assurance that this was not an act of terrorism does little to take away the grief of a community in mourning, especially when you consider the victims, whose ages span from 8 to 47, with many being under the age of 16. In these moments of collective heartache, Rhonda Stark joined John Morales to reflect on the senseless violence that has once again touched innocent lives. It's so easy to get numb when we hear about these stories, but we must always take time to pray and grieve. Rhonda's focus on the likely backgrounds of those who perpetrate such acts—a lack of love, stability, and a sense of belonging—speaks to the power of the Catholic faith, family, and community. Your job as a parent matters so much because you are giving your children a safe and stable upbringing that so many don't have.  Her advice to you, as you're grappling with how to address this tragedy with your children, was to remember the importance of age-appropriate discussions, and the necessity of providing a secure space for your children to express their fears and questions. Her emphasis on strategic planning for safety in public spaces, while not allowing fear to overshadow our lives, is something to really consider.  But perhaps what might strike you the most were her final thoughts on taking actionable steps towards healing. She encouraged you to connect with those affected through platforms like Childrens Mercy, reminding you that even the smallest gesture of sending a message of hope can ripple through a community in need of comfort. In prayer and solidarity, we stand with Kansas City, united in our hope and prayer for a future where celebrations are never again marred by such tragedies.

Roy Schoeman, a Catholic convert who was once Jewish, joins Morning Air to provide context behind the conflict.  You'll hear FOX NEWS audio of several Jewish students from UMass who voiced their concerns about their safety, expressing their deep worries about the situation in Israel and Palestine. They emphasized the misconception that many hold regarding the protests, highlighting that they feel the protests support not the Palestinians seeking peace but rather a deeply rooted hatred of Jews. Roy Schoeman provides insights into the theological and historical relationship between Judaism and the Catholic Church. He emphasizes the complex dynamics between Islam, Judaism, and the Catholic Church, explaining that what appears as a geographical or political issue is, in fact, deeply theological. Schoeman discusses how the hatred toward Jews is deeply embedded within Islamic scriptures and beliefs, with a particular focus on the animosity between Jews and the prophet Muhammad. Responding to the question of the growing anti-Semitism on college campuses, Schoeman points to the influence of Muslim student associations in shaping the narrative against Israel and the Jewish people. Diving deeper into the theological connections, he explains that Judaism is essentially the foundation for the Catholic Church, but before the coming of the Messiah. He shares his personal journey from atheism to Catholicism, revealing transformative experiences with God and the Blessed Virgin Mary that steered him toward the Catholic faith. He concludes by emphasizing the need for prayer for the peace of Jerusalem, suggesting that the issues in the Holy Land are of a supernatural nature, and a solution, if it exists, will be supernatural as well.  You must continue to pray the Rosary for peace! Don't give up hope, as we support the Jewish people in their time of need.

They highlight the significance of mealtime prayers, morning and bedtime prayers, and even prayers during daily routines like car rides to school. Kim particularly mentions the importance of modeling and scripting prayers for children. Exploring Prayer's Historical Context: Kim recommends using books, games, or flashcards that provide historical context and stories behind prayers. Understanding the origins and significance of prayers, such as the Fatima Prayer, can help children appreciate their depth and meaning. Creating a Prayerful Environment: They stress that creating the right environment for prayer is crucial. This environment doesn't always have to be formal or quiet. They share personal experiences, like praying the Rosary in the car with children during daily commutes, as an example of how the environment can be adapted to fit a family's lifestyle. Encouraging Conversational Prayer: The conversation also touches on the importance of teaching children to have a running conversation with God throughout the day, much like talking to a friend. This helps build a strong relationship with God and encourages children to pray from the heart. Bedtime Prayers: Bedtime routines are highlighted as a great opportunity for children to open up and pray for what's on their hearts. Children often show empathy and thoughtfulness by praying for others, such as their friends or classmates. Teaching by Example: They encourage parents and grandparents to model prayer and engage in prayerful activities with children. Making prayer a joyful and meaningful part of family life is seen as a beautiful way to nurture a child's faith.

Do you remember exactly where you were when you found out about the devastating terror attacks in New York City? We must never forget how people came together in unity to support one another.  Chief John LaBarbera reflects on the 22nd anniversary of the September 11th attacks with host John Morales of Morning Air. Chief LaBarbera, a retired battalion chief with the Fire Department of New York City and an executive board member of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, shares his memories of that fateful day. He recalls the moment he learned of the attacks while at the gym and rushed to Ground Zero. Despite orders to stay put, he and several others disobeyed to help injured civilians and first responders. Chief LaBarbera describes the overwhelming devastation at the World Trade Center site and the courageous efforts of firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel who went into the buildings to rescue people. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the magnitude of the tragedy and the heroism displayed by first responders. Chief LaBarbera also discusses how, in the days following 9/11, people across the country showed unprecedented unity, respect for first responders, and a return to faith. He acknowledges that, over time, some may have sadly forgotten about 9/11, especially younger generations, which is why organizations like the Tunnel to Towers Foundation are working to educate students about the events of that day through their 9/11 curriculum and mobile exhibit. Chief LaBarbera stresses the importance of ensuring that future generations never forget the events of September 11th, 2001, and he encourages support for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's educational initiatives.

Have you been feeling worn out by extreme heat in your area? Has the weather been concerning you? Perhaps the wildfires are making you wonder if climate change is the cause. Chuck Gaidica, a former meteorologist on Detroit television, joins John Morales of Morning Air to give his expert advice on all things weather.  Check out some of his main points. 1. Climate Change vs. Weather Patterns: Chuck cautions against confusing climate change with short-term weather patterns. He explains that the current heat wave could be attributed to a weather pattern, like El Niño, which originates in the Pacific Ocean. 2. Politicized Issue: Chuck notes that the topic of climate change has become highly politicized, making it difficult to discern unbiased information. He highlights that weather events and wildfires are often extrapolated to support specific narratives. 3. Historical Context: Chuck recalls attending a conference on global climate change in the past. He mentions the phrase "extreme extremes," suggesting that if the Earth's climate is changing, there could be more intensified and unusual weather events. 4. Natural Factors: The conversation turns to discussing natural factors that contribute to temperature variations. Chuck explains that high-pressure systems, like the dome of high pressure over the United States, can lead to heatwaves due to compression and heating of descending air. He also mentions the influence of El Niño and volcanic eruptions on global temperatures. 5. Volcanic Eruptions: Chuck references a recent underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga that NASA acknowledged could affect Earth's temperature for several years. He questions why such natural phenomena are often overlooked in favor of focusing solely on human activities. 6. Media Attention: Chuck addresses why certain events, like volcanic eruptions, might not receive mainstream media attention. He suggests that media coverage tends to focus on events with broader impacts or relevance to specific regions. 7. Natural Cycles: Both hosts emphasize the importance of recognizing that natural cycles play a role in climate and weather variations. They urge listeners to consider that today's extreme events may not necessarily indicate long-term global trends.

Life is winning, and you should be so excited that hearts and minds are being changed. If you want to know how the pro-life movement is advancing and what you can do, you need to hear this conversation from Morning Air.  Kristen Hawkins, the President of Students for Life of America, discusses the pro-life movement's evolution over the past several years and its future direction in a post-Roe America. She shares that she once thought it would be nearly impossible for Roe to go away any time soon, and she is so elated that Planned Parenthood has started to feel immense pressure. Hawkins reflects on the challenges and achievements of the pro-life movement, highlighting initiatives like Students for Life and 40 Days for Life, which have mobilized grassroots activism and prayer efforts outside abortion facilities, leading to the closure of some facilities and the saving of lives. Hawkins underscores the significance of focusing on both federal and state levels in the battle against abortion, particularly after the Dobbs decision, which empowers states to have a say in protecting vulnerable citizens. She mentions legislative victories in various states, such as Wyoming, South Carolina, and Florida, where pro-life measures were passed and signed into law. As the pro-life movement adapts in a post-Roe America, Hawkins emphasizes the need to show care and compassion to those considering abortion. She stresses the importance of demonstrating genuine concern for pregnant individuals and directing them to resources like standingwithyou.org that provide support for women and families.

So how much time should you spend? How should you pray in these moments? John Morales of Morning Air visits with Fr. Marcel Taillon to reflect on these questions.
