In this conversation, Dade Dieterich and Darren Hansen discuss the critical aspects of athletic training, focusing on the importance of hip flexors, sprinting mechanics, and the innovative use of bar speed metrics. They emphasize the need for fluid periodization in training, the role of parents in trusting coaches, and the shift towards efficiency over volume in training regimens. For generations, Pennsylvanians have been at the forefront of conservation movements that have shaped the United States. Pennsylvanians like Gifford Pinchot, Joseph Rothrock, J Horace McFarland and Rachel Carson have had immeasurable impacts on our natural world. They've helped protect our forests, create state parks, beautify our cities and warn against the devastating affects of pesticides. Others like Ralph Brock and Mira Lloyd Dock have often been left out of the history books, due to discrimination. But finally, they voices and work are being raised up.From the indigenous tribes that inhabited the lands we now call Pennsylvania, to the activists that helped pass the environmental rights amendment to our constitution, Pennsylvania has a long and storied history of conservation. I find that the more time I spend outside enjoying our incredible public lands, the more I want to learn more about our history of conservation. But where's a good place to start? Where can I learn a lot without getting bogged down in timelines and jargon. For me, there's been no better guidebook, than Allen Dieterich-Ward's "Cradle of Conservation: An Environmental History of Pennsylvania."Released in 2024, this book is a comprehensive study of Pennsylvania's environmental history in less than 150 pages. This concise book unpacks the people, policies and pivotal moments that turned Pennsylvania into a leader in conservation. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or just someone who enjoys a good story about the great outdoors, this book is for you.On this episode, I speak with Allen Dieterich-Ward to the podcast. Allen is a professor of history and director of The Graduate School at Shippensburg University and the author of Cradle of Conservation. Be sure to support our 2025 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSisters' SunflowersSupport the showVisit our website to learn more about the podcast, to purchase merch and to find out about our incredible sponsors. Life of the Record
The Making of THE RUNNERS FOUR by Deerhoof - feat. Greg Saunier, Satomi Matsuzaki, John Dieterich and Chris Cohen

Life of the Record

For the past three decades, Deerhoof have been one of the most consistently inventive rock bands around. Their seventh album, The Runners Four, remains a fascinating result of a band obsessively recording themselves in their practice space for many months. After Deerhoof first began as a solo harmonica project by Rob Fisk, drummer Greg Saunier joined only one week later. They signed to Kill Rock Stars and soon after Satomi Matsuzaki moved from Tokyo to San Francisco, she became the lead singer. They released their first two albums, and by 1999, Fisk ended up leaving the band, with guitarist John Dieterich joining later that year. Two additional albums followed and after this point, Chris Cohen came on as second guitarist. As a four-piece, they released Apple O' and Milk Man before turning their attention to their seventh album. This time around, they decided to embrace taking their time recording in their practice space, with each band member bringing in songs they had written. The result was the ambitious concept album, The Runners Four, which was eventually released in 2005. In this episode, Satomi Matsuzaki, Greg Saunier, John Dieterich and Chris Cohen, have an honest conversation about what it was like to be a band on the rise in the Bay Area and the pressure they felt to deliver a timeless record. Saunier describes the hours he spent tinkering with the free version of Pro Tools in a windowless practice space and the toll it took on his mental health. Matsuzaki talks about how swapping instruments with Cohen for this album, brought about a different rhythm and freed her up to sing some interesting vocal melodies. Dieterich describes using the then new technology of Line 6 POD amp simulators and how this approach allowed them to record in the practice space setting. Finally, Cohen describes the band members' interpersonal dynamics during this time and how he ended up leaving the band after this record. From self-mythologizing and writing songs about the band, to recording in the hallway, to embracing classic rock, to the intense relatability of Metallica's Some Kind of Monster, to a concept album about secret messages, time capsules and the flood, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Though they branch out with other projects, they have both been dedicated to the band for over 20 years and are celebrating the bands 19th album Miracle-Level (out March 31st on Joyful Noise Recordings). As standard with Deerhoof, the new record shimmers with newness and is full of sonic and lyrical surprises, but what stands out most is that this is the first "studio record" they've recorded in their long career. In this episode John and Ed share the recording experience and the motivation behind it. We also learn how John and Ed's artistic and personal relationship formed, how music brought them together and why this bond is so important them. John Joe and Ed discuss the path of their early influences and how they rear their head in the music and life. John tells us about Pond Hockey and we hear a couple tunes from the new record. https://deerhoof.website/ https://deerhoof.bandcamp.com/album/miracle-level https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/collections/deerhoof

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Sara Wickström, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Münster, to talk about her work on the effect of mechanotransduction on chromatin structure and transcription in stem cells. Sara Wickström and her team focus on the stem cell niche and how that niche affects stem cell function. In order to study the native niche and to even be able to manipulate it, the Wickström Lab was able to develop a ex vivo culture system, allowing systematic identification of factors driving stem cell dynamics and plasticity. Stem cells in the stem cell niche are exposed to external stimuli such as physical forces which control their growth, fate and self renewal. Recent work in the Wickström lab showed how mechanical signals influence transcriptional regulation, chromatin organization, and nuclear architecture and how this affects aging or lineage commitment. In this Episode we also discuss how chromatin can act as a sensor of mechanical signals taking advantage of the different physical properties of eu- and heterochromatin.   References Le, H.
